Book Description

Three years ago, award-winning actress Angelina Jolie took on a radically different role as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Here are her memoirs from her journeys to Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Pakistan, Cambodia, and Ecuador, where she lived and worked and gave her heart to those who suffer the world's most shattering violence and victimization. Here are her revelations of joy and warmth amid utter destitution...compelling snapshots of courageous and inspiring people for whom survival is their daily workŠand candid notes from a unique pilgrimage that completely changed the actress's worldview -- and the world within herself.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous and inspiring.......2007-09-19

Fabulous, amazing book. Journal like style makes everything so real. Any easy read but still one can learn so much from what she shares.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-opening, honest read.......2007-08-16

This book will teach you a lot about refugees and their struggles as seen through the eyes of someone who isn't a refugee herself. I cried several times reading this. This does read like Angelina's personal journal, so you're not going to find stellar prose, but you'll find her honest account of her travels. It is sad, yet inspirational. 5 STARS!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Glad I read it..........2007-07-08

In the beginning Angelina states that she's not a writer... and she's not, but everything she writes is very sincere and heartfelt. It was also neat to see her evolve as a person and come into motherhood. Also her personal writing style gradually becomes more confident, especially in her final mission in the book. I hope to read more notes from her soon.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELENT READ.......2007-06-04

ANGELINA JOLIE GIVES A DETAIL INVITE TO THE NEW WORLD SHE IS DICOVERING AND POEPLE SHE IS MEETING.

5 out of 5 stars astonishing.......2007-05-10

Although I have always liked Angelina as an actress and knew that she was involved with UN, I never knew how deep her dedication ran until now. I recieved this book from a friend, who like myself is also dedicated to humanitarian work. I was looking for more information on the UN and UNHCR and that is exactly what I have found in this book. I must say that I am very surprised and extatic to find that this is not just a detailed personal account of her experience in Africa, Cambodia, Pakistan and Ecuador, but she also gives significant information on the organizations. Organizations that I would like to research more and work with in the future.
Also, she mentions the book "First They Killed My Father" by Luong Ung -another great soulfull, insiteful book for anyone (I wish everyone) who is interested in learning about amazing people who have survived (and not survived) these horrific circumstances.

I am 24, and I don't have any children yet, but I cannot wait to pass these books onto them and teach them about the world. -the ENTIRE world.

highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars A decent bio but borrows too much from tabloids.......2007-03-14

I give this biography three stars b/c it allows the reader to read a bit more about Angelina's childhood that is not prev. known. The author goes out of his way to make it clear to the reader that the image and the woman are two different things. To get people to go beyond the shocking headlines and judgement.

However, a great deal of this book is simply a rehash of tabloid articles. The author tries to be fair to Jolie, and is for the most part, but there is no real stucture to it, it has way too many borrowed quotes from tabloids that make up a great deal. There are some phrases and discriptions of both Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt towards the end that are rather crude and unfair. Perhaps I'm being too hard on this book but frankly I was expecting better. I purchased this book because I'm a fan of Angelina Jolie so I already know alot about her. I was hoping to get a less tabloid point of view about her life and career. Like I said it takes so much from British rags that it's hard to know what is real and what is actually from Ms. Jolie.

Book Description

Tracing the actress' meteoric rise to fame, this biography looks at Angelina Jolie's early years, including her childhood growing up as Jon Voight's daughter, her crush on Dr. Spock, and how she once dreamed of becoming a funeral director. The book also addresses Jolie's eccentric behavior and bold reputation.

3 out of 5 stars Good photos.......2004-06-13

If you are a fan of Angelina, this book will not tell you anything you do not already know. Very poorly written, the author obviously threw this book together in a quick attempt to cash in on the AJ craze. However, I did enjoy the photos, they make a nice addition to your collection. If you'd like to get to know AJ a little better, try the book Angelina Jolie's Journals: Notes From My Travels, written by Angelina herself. She takes you behind the scenes for a personal look at her work as an ambassador.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2003-03-29

I liked this book, it contained great pictures and a lot of information.I don't give it 5 stars because I don't think the author really checked if the facts was true, because some things wasn't. And it was too much facts about other people in it.
If you really are a fan you should buy it, you will love the pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Good.......2002-11-04

okay the book was very well written and the facts and every thing was awesome but I wish it would of told more about Angelina's feelings and thoughts. There is a lot of pictures in the book and they are very nice. I love Angelina Jolie and the book gives you a lot of trival things about her. I loved the pictures of her in high school that was cool. The only two things that werent good was it didn't show her feelings and thougths and of course it is not up to date. It says nothing about Her and Billy Bob spliting and abopting Maddox but it is a little older for that. Good book

2 out of 5 stars 100 magazine articles.......2002-04-09

Why oh why did i buy this book? Oh yes... in a fit of madness i fell in love with angelina jolie and spent too much money on her dvd's and this book. I wish I had read marcia's review... this book has a gorgeous cover but inside is just a compilation of magazine articles and speculation. i would have given the book one star- but threw in the extra one for the highschool pics of angelina and this color pic that makes her look like a housewife. However if I were you- i wouldn't waste your money on this book for the pictures because there's not many. then again- we all have to learn from our own mistakes right?

5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining and informative biography on Ms. Jolie =-).......2007-01-06

This biography on Angelina Jolie was very well written and informative. The book included tons of fun facts about her, and had alot of great pictures. I enjoyed the book very much and would absolutely recommend it. If you're a Jolie fan, this book is for you. I also recommend Notes from My Travels by Angelina. That book was very touching and inspirational. I highly recommend both books.

2 out of 5 stars nothing new here.......2006-07-07

Ordered the book to find out something new about Angie. Well, it was dissapointment- there was nothing new I could learn about Angelina. And the book wasn't that interesting to read generally.

2 out of 5 stars Skip this book.......2006-03-13

I'm an Angelina Jolie fan and had hoped to learn a lot about her by reading this biography. I was seriously disappointed. I didn't learn much, as well as the book was not well written. I felt like half the book was dedicated to reviewing her movies or telling more about the movie plots, which I don't care about. I wanted to learn more about Angelina Jolie as a person, and frankly, this book didn't teach me much. It was a waste of my time to read.

4 out of 5 stars ENTERTAINING.......2006-03-11

I FOUND THIS BOOK ABOUT ANGELINA TO BE A GOOD READ. IT IS SHORT AND SWEET, EASY TO READ. IT COVERS HER LIFE AND CAREER IN GENERAL WITHOUT A GREAT DEAL OF DETAIL. IF YOU LIKE TO READ ABOUT THE MOVIES SHE HAS MADE AND A BIT ABOUT HER PRIVATE LIFE, THEN THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. IT HAS MANY PICS AND IS A NICE KEEPSAKE IF YOU ENJOY THIS GORGEOUS AND TALENTED ACTRESS. A NICE BUY.

4 out of 5 stars Nice read.......2005-05-20

The book is a short read, 144 pages. It has a nice assortment of black and white photos, no color photos except the front and back covers. If you have been following Angelina for some time now, you'll already have seen most of these photos. Most of the photos are either screen shots and promotions, or from various award ceremonies. As a long time fan of Angelina, I was surprised to see that this book had a good bit of information on her that I didn't already know. There's a lot of quotes from magazines. The author breaks down most of Angelina's movies, and I do think he spends a tad too much time describing the other actors in these movies. Either way, it is a cheap book and a nice addition to a fan's collection, also a great read for the brand new fan. I recommend!

I purchased this thinking it was a calender, but actually found out it's 12 little cards (a little smaller than a cd case) with dates on the card and hardly good looking pictures of Angelina to top. If I had known that it was like that... I would have made it myself and the sad thing is I proably could of made it 1000x better but instead wasted my money, but atleast aftering reading this you proably wont waste yours, my deed for the day is done...

        Book Description

Academy Award–winning actress, former fashion model and Hollywood party girl, and current Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency, Angelina Jolie is constantly in the media spotlight. Unlike many Hollywood stars who do their best to avoid the press, her openness about her complicated and often outlandish life has endeared her to fans worldwide. Her most famous screen roles are covered in this biography, from Gia to Lara Croft, which established her as one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood. Also explored is her reputation for living on the edge, and Angelina's refreshing honesty around tempestuous romantic relationships, bisexuality, wild partying, and breakdowns and thoughts of suicide. Finally, her recent roles as philanthropist, mother, and half of a Hollywood golden couple with Brad Pitt, are also discussed in this inspiring must-read book for fans of this continually fascinating global superstar.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good setting but system not for me.......2007-08-13

There are things I like about this book and things that I don't. The pros of the book include a detailed and interesting setting with loads of heroes and villians, maps, and world history. Rather than just tell you the history, the book provides you with mock-ups of files, news articles, a short story called "Training Day" and an essay on the history and evolution of comics. This part of the book earns and A from me. Character creation is a whole other creature. Personally I don't have a huge problem with character classes. If you want something generic to work from, there's the Adventurer class that can be used for any hero. There are a lot of skills to choose from (which can be a boon or a drag depending on how you view things). Powers can be modified for varying effects to create just the feel you want for your character. Personally though, I found some of the rules confusing (as I do with a lot of D20 books) and trying to figure out how many points you'll spend on a given power when you modify it takes a fair amount of math. It's not nearly as bad as some other systems out there, but you will be spending a fair amount of time working on character creation. Honestly I can't say much for how the game plays because I was frustrated with how character creation was going I switched games (Mutants & Masterminds) where character creation is still bogged down in math, but not to the same degree as SAS and I found the language was simpler to understand. I'll give this part of the book a C. I keep the book for the setting, history and other materials I use for reference, not for the game itself. It's not a bad purchase, and I may even get back to it to try it for a full campaign sometime. But it's not high on my list.

              2 out of 5 stars BESM rehash.......2006-12-11

I must first tell all who read this that I am disappointed in this book. Classes for superheroes sounds like a good idea but having purchased Guardians of Order's BESM D20 earlier and in skimming through this book I felt as though I had bought that book twice inadvertantly. The history and explanation of comics and more specifically the silver age were nice but all in all it was not enough to justify the price of admission.

If you want a really good D20 style superhero game, then there really is only one choice. I bought SAS to compare it to M&M. Mutants and Masterminds is the better system hands down. The archtypes in Mutants and Masterminds gives you ready to play characters. And if the archtype is not exactly what you wanna play, well, the system itself allows you tweak the archetype and customize the characer to your own vision. In order to do that with Silver Age Sentinels you need to multiclass. Many of the characters in the main book are multiclassed. From now on, if I get any SAS book it will be to convert its contents to M&M.

4 out of 5 stars Sentinels beats Mutants.......2005-11-04

I have had the opportunity to play MaM and SAS and I have taken great pains to try and construct a SaS universe. This alone should tell you, gentle reader, which system I prefer.

SAS has an excellent background on comic book trends as well as a mission statement for superhero characters. The name is meant to recall a certain era in comics, but the system is designed to be as current as you'd want to be.

The character creation I find to be very friendly to D20 players and Champions players, unlike MaM, which I found to be Counter-Intuitive. A negative is the character class system which is skewed, unless you make everyone "Adventurer" or simply assign 10 CP/level gained. Again, Champions players shoud feel very comfortable with the free-form system and D20 players can easily adapt rules systems or the lack thereof with what is given.

Powers are done in a very straightforward way. If you want to be tough, you buy armor that reduces damage or you purchase a power to give you more hit points, rather than depending on bonuses to an abstract "Damage Save." If you want to be super-strong, you buy points for Strength, rather than "Super-Strong" power (as in MaM). Skills can be a little confusing, but defects are pretty well defined and (for some this is a hearbreaker) they disallow psychological disadvantages for the most part, reasoning this to be an RP decision rather than a mechanical one (which I support).

It has nice flavor pieces, but is a little lacking in the equipment department, I admit. YMMV, but I feel that the gadgeteering, equipment, et cetera sections of the book needed work. More equipment and toys would've gotten this book a better rating IMO, but they have plenty of sample characters built with their system, some iconic (like American Sentinel and Caliburn) and some unique (Like Pan&Belle and Green Ronin).

SAS is very friendly for experienced RPers, I find, and as long as the GM takes care in letting his players create characters, you will have no problems and many happy games. I give it 4 out of 5 stars, marking off for lack of raw equipment data, a generally mediocre approach to tech / gadget heroes, and poorly-balanced character classes.

5 out of 5 stars SaS Does the super hero job and does it well.......2004-12-21

I've never played MnM however I promise that complaintsa against the game are unfounded. The only ishue I have with this book is the title. Silver Age Sentinels is confusing (another reviwer was confussed) Although it can be used for the silver age (or golden age or any time setting) the setting that comes with the book is modern day. Guardians of Order used the name silver age to inspire silver age values.

Now onto the book. I find that after eading the game mechanics chapter an expeirenced D20 player will take ro the modifications to the system easily. The main change to armour was made for an obvious reasons. If having a high strength would increase your chance to hit than charecters like Superman and the Hulk would hit every time and deal tons of damage. Instead the system uses reduction.

The attribute system has covered every power my group has thought up. The book contains a "unique attribute" but we've never needed to use it. The attributes cover all advantages from heat vision to being rich.

A commen complaint is that the system has no feats and/or uses an original skill set. For starters the combanation of "combat skills" and attributes cover any D&D feat. If you really want feats GoO has provided an attribute called "feat" on the website. Also the book uses an orignal skill set. If this really bothers you so much it is possible to simply use D&D skills.

Over all this book is a great buy if you're into D20 Supers. I cannot compare it against MnM because I've never played however I can promise that most complaints about this book unfounded.

              2 out of 5 stars M&M does it better.......2004-08-14

I was a playtester for the Tri-Stat version of this game and never saw the d20 version until it hit the stores. Really, the best thing I can say about this version is, the cover is MUCH better than the Tri-Stat cover. Beyond that for a d20 supers game....well, Mutants & Masterminds does it a whole lot better. Much easier to understand rules and, really, you will find it usefull to have the Tri-Stat version if you try to run this game.
In the end, if you want to play SAS, go get the Tri-Stat version (very good game). Want to play d20 supers? M&M is the answer.

Dennis Bakke was co-founder and eventually CEO of AES, a large energy company which grew to over $8 billion in annual revenue and over 40,000 employees. Bakke's Joy at Work is in part, a CEO memoir, as it chronicles AES's growth, complete with anecdotes about boardroom confrontations, employee relations, and new openings of production facilities. Joy at Work goes beyond the standard business tale, though: Bakke believes in moral values as ends in themselves, as opposed to means towards the end of greater financial return, and he's not afraid to say it.

A number of authors in recent years have made the case that companies which embody humanistic values, and which nurture uplifting cultures, come to house happier, more productive employees. "Values" should be embraced, the argument goes, because they lead to better business results. Bakke shuns such thinking. He wants "values" for values' sake--because he believes they are an integral part of the human experience, and one that daily work should incorporate. He argues that financial return is only one good alongside others. As Bakke writes at one point in Joy at Work: "Why should enriching shareholders be more important than producing quality products and selling them to customers at fair prices?"

Readers who start off sympathetic to Bakke's worldview will likely enjoy Bakke's book. "Joy at Work" is situated perfectly within values-led business literature, alongside books like Howard Schultz's Pour Your Heart Into It, the Body Shop's Anita Roddick (Take It Personally) and Ben & Jerry's Double Dip, by the ice-cream guys. Joy at Work provokes questions and warrants a read, if, for no reason other than its impressive string of blurbs from friends of the author: Everyone from President Bill Clinton to Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren vouches for Bakke and his gospel. --Peter Han

                Book Description

Imagine a company where people love coming to work and are highly productive on a daily basis. Imagine a company whose top executives, in a quest to create the most "fun" workplace ever, obliterate labor-management divisions and push decision-making responsibility down to the plant floor. Could such a company compete in today's bottom-line corporate world? Could it even turn a profit?

Well, imagine no more. In Joy at Work, Dennis W. Bakke tells the true story of this extraordinary company—and how, as its co-founder and longtime CEO, he challenged the business establishment with revolutionary ideas that could remake America's organizations. It is the story of AES, whose business model and operating ethos -"let's have fun"-were conceived during a 90-minute car ride from Annapolis, Maryland, to Washington, D.C. In the next two decades, it became a worldwide energy giant with 40,000 employees in 31 countries and revenues of $8.6 billion.

It's a remarkable tale told by a remarkable man: Bakke, a farm boy who was shaped by his religious faith, his years at Harvard Business School, and his experience working for the Federal Energy Administration. He rejects workplace drudgery as a noxious remnant of the Industrial Revolution. He believes work should be fun, and at AES he set out to prove it could be. Bakke sought not the empty "fun" of the Friday beer blast but the joy of a workplace where every person, from custodian to CEO, has the power to use his or her God-given talents free of needless corporate bureaucracy. In Joy at Work, Bakke tells how he helped create a company where every decision made at the top was lamented as a lost chance to delegate responsibility—and where all employees were encouraged to take the "game-winning shot," even when it wasn't a slam-dunk.

Perhaps Bakke's most radical stand was his struggle to break the stranglehold of "creating shareholder value" on the corporate mind-set and replace it with more timeless values: integrity, fairness, social responsibility, and, above all, fun. And Bakke doesn't shrink from describing the assault on his leadership when AES was sucked into the Enron downdraft and faced a plunging stock price. At this moment of crisis, influential colleagues and directors distanced themselves from the values that had made AES one of the most celebrated companies in the world.

Joy at Work offers a model for the 21st-century company that treats its people with respect, gives them unprecedented responsibility, and holds them strictly accountable—because it's the right thing to do, not just because it makes good business sense. More than any book you've ever read, Dennis Bakke's Joy at Work will force you to question everything you thought you knew about corporate success.

5 out of 5 stars Join the revolution.......2007-03-12

It is easy to by cynical about this book. You can sit back and say why Mr. Bakke's approach won't work with the people you have, in the industry that you are in, or with any number of the restrictions that you deal with. And you may be right. But there is reason not to keep an eye on the utopian goal of making work enjoyable, and at least to veer in that direction. How can one argue with a right-minded approach to making the world a better place?

Mr. Bakke was the founder and guiding partner for an international company in the business of supplying energy. As the head of the company, he was uniquely positioned to shape the company according to his ideals. His book is best at conveying how management might infuse joy into the workplace, and still profit.

This book is a wonder if only for the author's steadfast insistence on living by your principles...for doing the right thing. Managing by allowing subordinates to make decisions is a concept to which every manager should be exposed.

"Joy at Work" is not without flaws. It could be written more concisely. The book would benefit from a broader study of workplaces. I bought the book thinking it was more in the self-help/motivational genre. It is not. Techniques to stay happy and motivated on the job are only peripheral to the subject discussed. What is most lacking in the "Joy at Work" is how an ordinary employee might put the books insights into practice, short of job hopping jobs until finding compliant management. But one book can't say it all. I am stretching to give this book a five star rating, because it is a landmark book. More can be built on what Dennis has begun.

Buy it, read it, tell your friends about it. And buy a copy for your boss.

3 out of 5 stars Great concept, tends to be repitive and rambling, not tatical.......2006-09-19

I greatly admire the concepts and approaches defined in Joy At Work. No question there are many inciteful ideas that need to be applied to the American workplace. It is refreshing to read a business book that takes a very different approach than the overused "CEO" approach to leading a company to success. Books like "Good To Great" and "In Search of Excellence" are really missing the point that Joy AT Work captures.

However, Joy At Work suffers in the writing and lack of tangible application. Concepts and ideals are repeated so often that the reading becomes boring and difficult. I also struggled with how a company would go about implementing the concepts presented. While the approach is a paridigm shift - to the point that it isn't really something that gets 'implemented' but a way to think, to feel, to act.

Explaining how Joy At Work was put into place at AES doesn't really help us understand how to go in that direction.

3 out of 5 stars Provocative yet something isn't right.......2006-09-18

It is a provocative book with some good ideas. I believe there are many examples of great companies have strong elements of Joy for those that work there so I would not call it "a revolutionary approach" as the title does.
Secondly, I found several of his arguments to be illogical and even contradictory. I'm actually surprised that this book has sold so many copies as it has given AES's financial record while the author was CEO. But then again he would argue (as he does in the book) that financial records are of secondary importance.

I am always looking for the latest and greatest fun ideas for my workplace. this is a good one. Worth the read...

4 out of 5 stars Joy at Work.......2006-08-22

Mr. Bakke shares strategies for persons in the workplace to feel valued. His strategies are not always popular with those whose main goal is to make a profit; however, he has satisfied employees who would do anything for him. Good book!
