Book Description
The French New Wave cinema is arguably the most fascinating of all film movements, famous for its exuberance, daring, and avant-garde techniques. A History of the French New Wave Cinema offers a fresh look at the social, economic, and aesthetic mechanisms that shaped French film in the 1950s, as well as detailed studies of the most important New Wave movies of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Richard Neupert first tracks the precursors to New Wave cinema, showing how they provided blueprints for those who would follow. He then demonstrates that it was a core group of critics-turned-directors from the magazine Cahiers du Cinéma—especially François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, and Jean-Luc Godard—who really revealed that filmmaking was changing forever. Later, their cohorts Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, and Pierre Kast continued in their own unique ways to expand the range and depth of the New Wave.
In an exciting new chapter, Neupert explores the subgroup of French film practice known as the Left Bank Group, which included directors such as Alain Resnais and Agnès Varda. With the addition of this new material and an updated conclusion, Neupert presents a comprehensive review of the stunning variety of movies to come out of this important era in filmmaking.
Customer Reviews:
You won't want to put this book down!.......2003-04-28
Extremely well written, I really enjoy reading this book very much. The subject matter is no doubt fascinating, and the author, Mr. Neupert has done a wonderful job in presenting the history of the French New Wave Cinema. Not only does the author include a comprehensive political, cultural and commercial development that lead to the phenomenon, he also manages to present each influential New Wave directors, actors/actresses along with their important works in great detail. The book includes movie story lines in such detail that even if you have not seen the movie, you will appreciate and understand what the author is trying to convey. The author discusses issues on techniques, budgets and distributorship in French cinemas. Most interestingly, pictures from films discussed are liberally peppered throughout the book.
Mr. Neupert's writing style is greatly commendable. The words are straightforward and full of good information it's such a pleasure to read his book. I especially enjoy the title description Mr. Neupert gives for each of the directors. I feel that he's very accurate in describing Chabrol as "the one launching the wave", Varda's success for her "elegance realism" and my favorite Truffaut as "the wave's ringleader".
For a long time, I have always been in love with movies by Rohmer, Godard, Truffaut among others without exactly knowing the reason why. After reading this book, I understand why. The French New Wave Cinema is a complex phenomenon that is impossible to be understood without understanding the political, cultural, commercial as well as psychological (personality) landscapes of Europe/people during that era. If you love watching films by great directors like Truffaut, Rohmer, Chabrol and others, you should read this book. It's highly recommended.

A coffee-table book on the Nouvelle Vague (or New Wave) filmmakers might be considered a contradiction in terms. Yet as big and well-designed as it is, with all those creamy photographs, it still manages to look like the smart, perverse product of that band of outsiders who in 1950s Paris decided to overturn the last generation. In Jean Doucet's story, François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, Claude Chabrol, and Eric Rohmer all shucked their day jobs in film criticism to begin making films with borrowed cameras and their raw nerve, hunting their cinematic forefathers--Jean Renoir, Marcel Carne, and Marcel Pagnol. Doucet's lively book is true to their vision too. With its jazz album fonts and tinted photographs of young men smoking, it gives no corner to dumbness, and much space to the coolness of being alive during that time. Through 350-plus pages, Doucet, a philosopher who knew the filmmakers, covers the early days of the Cinematheque Français, where all the filmmakers met and watched Chaplin, Griffith, and Murnau; the emergence of Cahiers du Cinéma, where they published witty, polemical essays, as the center of their revolution; and the films themselves, beginning with Truffaut's 400 Blows in 1959 and Godard's Breathless in 1960. Doucet reproduces film reviews of the period and includes copies of old cine-club programs, newspaper stories, and a final chapter on "new waves" in Iran, Czechoslovakia, Brazil, and even the U.S. (see Jim Jarmusch). A probing, affectionate look at the birth of a handful of movie-mad film students who changed the face of cinema. --Lyall Bush
Book Description
"Here is a lavish history of the film movement that spawned the careers of Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, and a number of other important contemporary filmmakers. Douchet... considers his subject from almost every possible angle."--Library Journal. "A landmark in film scholarship."--Cineaste

Book Description
This book tells the story of France's remarkable transformation in the 1940s and 1950s through exhaustive study of the role of youth and youth culture in France's rejuvenation and cultural reconstruction in the aftermath of war, occupation, and collaboration. Examining everything from Brigitte Bardot and New Wave film to Tarzan and comic books, from juvenile delinquents and managerial technocrats to soldiers and 1968 protesters, from popular culture to politics, the author makes a fascinating case for reconsidering the significance and meaning of youth in postwar France. Riding the New Wave advances a new methodological approach by considering age as a category of historical analysis comparable to, and in tandem with, race, class, and gender. This history reveals youth to be a central feature in France's recovery from the Second World War while also clarifying the international significance of youth in the tumultuous 1960s.
Customer Reviews:
Cultural History at its Best. .......2007-08-24
This is a truly wonderful book which goes far to recover the cultural mindset of the often over-looked Fourth Republic. Jobs has a remarkable ability to choose the perfect anecdote and case study to make his point and consequently brings the immediate post-war period in France to life. What is most enjoyable about the book is the way in which shows that youth culture in France did not spring fully formed into existence in 1968. By examining the cultural meanings attached to the concept of youth (and to youths themselves), Jobs gives the reader a much needed nuanced understanding of the culture that exploded onto the scene in the events of May.
Great Cultural History of Postwar France.......2007-03-04
This is a great, smart, and important book on an understudied aspect of French society - the significant and moving intersections of youth culture and national rebuilding. A must read for anyone interested in European history.

Godard on Godard: Critical Writings by Jean-Luc Godard (Da Capo Paperback)
ASIN: 0801874319 |
Book Description
Cinema has always been "literary" in its desire to tell stories and in its need to borrow plots and narrative techniques from novels. But the French New Wave directors of the 1950s self-consciously rejected the idea that film was a mere extension of literature. With subversive techniques that exploded traditional methods of film narrative, they embraced fragmentation and alienation. Their cinema would be literature's rival, not its apprentice. In Screening the Text, T. Jefferson Kline argues that the New Wave's rebellious stance is far more complex and problematic than critics have acknowledged. Challenging conventional views of film and literature in postwar France, Kline explores the New Wave's unconscious obsession with the tradition it claimed to reject. He uncovers the wide range of the literary and cultural texts -- American films, classical mythology, French literature, and a variety of Russian, Norwegian, German, and English writers and philosophers -- as "screened" in seven films: Truffaut's Jules et Jim; Malle's Les Amants; Resnais's L'Année dernière à Marienbad; Chabrol's Le Beau Serge; Rohmer's Ma Nuit chez Maud; Bresson's Pickpocket; and Godard's Pierrot le fou.

Book Description
Until now, writings on the celebrated movements in literature and film that emerged in France in the mid-1950s—the New Novel and New Wave—have concentrated on their formal innovations, not on their engagement with history or politics. New Novel, New Wave, New Politics overturns this traditional approach. Lynn A. Higgins argues that the New Novelists (e.g., Alain Robbe-Grillet, Claude Simon, Marguerite Duras) and New Wave filmmakers (e.g., Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Alain Resnais) “engage in a kind of historiography. . . . They enact the conflicts, the double binds of postwar history and representation.” Higgins claims that what art historian Serge Guilbaut has said of American Abstract Expressionism is equally true of the New Novel and New Wave—that its aesthetic innovations “provided a way for avant-garde artists to preserve their sense of social ‘commitment’ . . . while eschewing the art of propaganda and illustration. It was in a sense a political apoliticism.” This lively account dramatically revises our view of a generation of important, influential artists.

Book Description
The French New Wave was perhaps the biggest& mdash;and briefest& mdash;explosion in the history of world cinema, with over one hundred French directors shooting debut features between 1958 and 1964. Its aftershocks are still being felt today. Through the work of such directors as Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut, filmmakers came to be seen as outstanding artists rather than mere studio technicians, paving the way for contemporary cinematic auteurs such as Martin Scorsese, Pedro Almodovar, and Luc Besson. This volume begins by tracing the social and cultural changes of post-war France that gave birth to the New Wave, then examines in detail the careers of artists like Alain Renais and Jean-Luc Godard. The French New Wave: A New Look is a concise and accessible account of a crucial movement in film history.

Book Description
These letters of Franz Liszt are a part of the Dumbarton Oaks Collection bequeathed to Harvard University by Mrs. Robert Woods Bliss in 1969. Written during the last sixteen years of Liszt's life, they are addressed to the Baroness Olga von Meyendorff, who shared his interests, though not always his views, in abroad field of disciplines--music, philosophy, theology, politics, literature--as well as his concern for persons both prominent and familial.
The translation by William R. Tyler, who from 1969 to 1977 was Director of Dumbarton Oaks, is provided with notes and an Introduction by Edward N. Waters, widely recognized authority on Liszt and formerly Chief of the Music Division of the Library of Congress.
Composed with warmth and humor, and not infrequently with some asperity, the letters reveal Liszt to have been an ardent, generous, and modest man, loyal and devoted to family and friends, pupils and colleagues alike.
Though it was first intended to publish the letters in their original French as well as in translation, the cost of such a publication proved to be prohibitive. However, copies of the letters, or, when necessary, the letters themselves may be consulted by qualified readers at Dumbarton Oaks.

By looking at the way the letters are formed and where they are placed in relation to the other letters, you can piece together a solution. These artfully constructed brainteasers are a favorite among teachers, travelers, and puzzle-lovers alike. Terry Stickels has authored eleven similar collections in the past, and has had bestsellers with Scholastic (over 70,000 sold), Pomegranate, and St. Martin's Press.
Customer Reviews:
Frame Games: Wonderful Fun!.......2006-11-12
Terry Stickels is a great entertainer for the mind--and his puzzles are both challenging and wonderful fun for the entire family!
Great Time Waster .......2006-06-04
Bought the book to while away the hours on a flight to the "Big Apple" it did a great job, I even ended up lending it to one of my fellow passengers :-)
Frame Games is an entertaining challenge.......2006-06-02
I discovered the Frame Game phenomena about a year ago and have been busily buying up back issues. I find the puzzles deceptively challenging, and the Pocket Book addition lives up to that billing. I have been using this particular edition to introduce Frame Games to my friends. Everyone has found these brainteasers to be a real exercise in mental flexibility. Each time you solve a puzzle on a page, you feel a sense of accomplishment, but can't wait to get to the next one. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fun challenge. A good time will be had by all who read.
Lots of Fun and Good Challenges.......2006-05-16
Excellent and fun set of frame game puzzles. Its fun for a wide range of ages and even fun to do in groups. My whole family enjoys these puzzles. My brother and I (11 and 23) worked on them together (or in competition as brothers do) -- it was amazing, he really took to them and got many of them before me! Of course, at our house, I'm still king of our other puzzle book, "Are you as Smart as you Think?" ;-)
200 Fresh Puzzles = A Great Bargain.......2006-05-16
Terry's Frame Games have made him world famous, and just when you think all of the possible phrases and ways to utilize them in Frame Games puzzles have been used up, he makes more! All 200 (count 'em) of these puzzles are completely new. The answer to each puzzle is found 2 pages later, upside down, in small print, right at the bottom of the page. This keeps you from having to hunt around at the end of the book for the answers, but also from seeing the answer too soon by accident. At $9.95 for 200 puzzles, that's less than a nickel per Frame Game. You can't beat that.

Practical Casting; A studio reference.......2007-03-11
Very good information put in easy to understand language and tips to cast on a budget.
Another of McCeight's winners.......2006-03-29
Don't let the sub title Studio Reference throw a scare in you. With its lay flat binding and clear and concise steps, you will be using it in the studio as a ready reference book. As somebody who owns and have read over 25 books on casting and foundry work. This book was a light read compared to some it doesn't get bogged down in to much tech for tech sake. If you just want to find out about what it takes to do a little casting or jump in and go all the way this is the one bok for you. I own it.
Excellent summary of studio casting techniques.......2006-02-21
This book, like McCreight's other books on working metals, divides the subject into easily digestible portions and treats each topic separately (often on a separate page) with a short discussion. Line drawings help clarify important points. The focus is on the tools, materials, and techniques of lost wax casting, but also covers sand casting, the use of flexible molds, using the services of a foundry, and other topics of concern to the studio metalsmith. It's a great reference tool if you need to look up the proper sequence to use in a particular technique, or a formula for making your own crucibles. Learning to cast almost requires hands-on instruction, and this book alone cannot provide that. But if you're already familiar with casting, it's a wonderful reference.
Another McCreight Gem.......2003-03-08
Tim McCreight's books are always excellent, and PRACTICAL CASTING
is yet another gem. I especially appreciate it's easy to follow format and the author's generous "make-it-yourself" directions for tools and gadgets that can be easily put together by the jewelry crafter. These tips really come in handy and save having to buy yet another expensive doodad to complete a process.
Casting Simplified!.......2000-05-02
McCreight has written another one of his easy-to-read books for readers and would-be practitioners of the metal smith's or jeweler's art.
The book is well written. Once again the spiral bound format makes it easy to use in the shop.
This book is reasonably priced for the amount of information it provides. McCreight can never be blamed for trying to "gouge" the public with his prices.
Interested in casting? This book is a great place to start!

Masterpiece from days of past.......2002-02-06
One of the earliest pieces I hav found that throroughly examines the correlations between astrology and tarot. But this book does so much more than that. His book details in depth interpretations by each sign and planet within each house and gets beyond the basic rhetoric one finds in many modern books. I constantly find that I am drawn to this book (published 1901) and many other "old" books regarding astrology and tarot, as they aren't simplified or dummied down for anyone. The words may be antiquated, but the education offered is indepth and priceless.

The book was informative but the materials neede for the project were not as stable. The product had to be redone several times.
interesting.......2005-02-11
This book uses basic principles to creat a key. The book is easy to understand, and the process is possible with some practice. However the book tells you at the end to use the copy of the key you made to duplicate it on a machine(or by hand) because the metal you use is to frail. This book would be better if it told you how to either harden the metal you use after you key is made, or if the instructions used a different metal, and possibly a different heating process for that metal.

An internationally renowned and acknowledged master of the art and science of fly fishing........2007-07-09
Lefty Kreh is an internationally renowned and acknowledged master of the art and science of fly fishing. Now in a newly revised and expanded edition, "Lefty Kreh's Longer Fly Casting: The Compact, Practical Handbook That Will Add Ten Feet -- Or More -- To Your Casts" is certain to improve the fly casting performance of any angler. This 98-page, profusely illustrated instruction manual analyses the basic forward cast, explains its different parts and dynamics, and then builds on that to fully illustrate the essential fly casting technique for targeting fish at the arm's maximum range known as the 'double haul'. Of special note is the cogent explanation of properly using a shooting head and overcoming many common obstacles to successful fly casting including wind factors, trees, casting from boats, and more. "Lefty Kreh's Longer Fly Casting" should be considered mandatory reading for anyone seeking to improve their fly cast fishing performance. Also very highly recommend are Lefty Kreh's other fly fishing instruction manuals and guides: "Presenting The Fly"; "Fly Fishing in Salt Water"; "Saltwater Fly Patterns"; "Practical Fishing Knots"; "Solving Casting Problems", and "101 Fly-Fishing Tips".

The Ultimate Guide to Trim Carpentry: Plan, Design, Install (Ultimate Guide)
ASIN: 1592533264 |
Book Description
Sound advice for the finishing touch
Decorative trim, such as baseboards, moldings, wainscoting, and casings, adds warmth and depth to otherwise sterile rooms. Home Design Details: Architectural Trim provides practical advice and inspiration for wall, ceiling, door, window, stairway, and built-in trim for every room of the home. The relatively low cost to install new trim coupled with the fact that installation requires only a few tools, makes installing trim a popular home improvement job. While many books cover the basics of installing trim, Home Design Details: Architectural Trim goes a step further and explains why popular designs work so effectively, and how to recreate them in your own home. It is the only book on the subject that breaks apart the details of each room in the home and provides specific information on why design decisions were made each step of the way. Each detail is featured in a three-dimensional illustration so the reader can see how each piece of trim or molding was created. Simple step-by-step DIY projects are provided as well as comprehensive information for making the right design decision for any space.

Unique combination of astrology, numerology and tarot.......2006-01-11
I gave this book only three stars, because the author claims to have reconstructed ancient egyptian astrology but gives no evidence to support the claim. What he does provide is an unusual combination of western astrology, numerology, and tarot based on Rosicucian qabalistic ideas (including the assumption that the tarot originated in ancient Egypt) with some real Egyptian astrology thrown in based on what little is known of the subject. His method does not require the use of ephemerides and does not take into account the location of the person making the enquiry (which simplifies things considerably). However, it has the drawback, I think, of appearing very unscientific to people who believe in astrology but do not put the same faith in the claims of numerology and/or tarot. However, the book contains many interesting illustrations along with a short history of astronomy up to the time the book was written, and makes for some enjoyable light reading. I only wish the author had gone into more detail explaining and justifying his unusual methods, which I think he easily could have done based on the works of Levi and Papus (of whom I am assuming he was aware).

Book Description
Spell Castings is an eclectic grimoire of magickal ways.
Have you ever lit a pink candle on a Friday night and thought about the love you would like to have in your life? Maybe even closed your eyes and pictured that perfect person?
Have you ever walked into a room and knew you were not alone and said a prayer for protection?
Have you ever looked at a telephone, wished it would ring, and it did?
If you have had these or similar experiences, you have put the cosmic forces of the universe to work without even realizing it. Imagine what would happen if you decided to consciously focus your energy, willing these things to happen. Would they?
Spell Castings is a book of more than one hundred easy-to-use, practical spells to help you achieve and accomplish your dreams. Every subject is covered, from cleansing the soul to the limitless boundaries of love and death. Spell Castings can be performed by the experienced Witch or Warlock, but are easy enough for the novice. Specific procedures - including the use of various supplies needed to cast the spells - are completely explained. Also included are charts to guide you through the correct moon phases, magickal days and hours.
Spell Castings is divided into color-coded chapters to help you determine which spell you desire to cast. For example, if you were looking for a spell to become more psychic or to help you perform more intuitive readings, you would look under the purple chapter. If you were seeking a money spell or better employment spell, you would look under the green chapter. The color-coded index will lead you to the areas you are most interested in casting.
When you stir the magick - as only a Witch can - the options are limitless and the effects can be life changing. All the spells within this book are written with the intent to harm none, so brew as often as you and your cauldron desire.

Now this is mixed up.......2007-07-20
I give her a 2 for the time it takes to write a book and having what it takes to get on with a publisher. However, there are some things that jump out as completely wrong in this book, not even a matter of opinion, they are simply incorrect terms in the world of Wicca or Witchcraft, which she's uses interchangeably. These bothered me the most: "warlock" is not a male witch, a "gray witch" is not a novice Witch learning Wicca, a "white witch" is not "a witch or warlock who practices Wicca," "Wicca is not the study and practice of Witchcraft, honoring the God and Goddess, a High Priestess is not "the status that identifies a female witch as a teacher," etc. And what is her obsession with calling the New Moon the "Hare Moon?" And says "Wanning," referring to the moon phase when the moon has been full until the time of the Hare Moon Sabbat (a Wiccan Sabbath with eight holy days in all). What in the world is this girl talking about? The Hare Moon is one of the names commonly used for the March Moon. And the Hare Moon would be an esbat, not a sabbat. And what's the deal with the eight holy days of the Sabbath? Isn't that rather Jewish? I can understand that but shouldn't these Hare Moons be considered Rosh Codesh is she's Jewish? She calls the Trinity of God: the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit and the Trinity of the Goddess: Maiden, Mother, and Crone. That's not Christian, Pagan, or even ChristopPagan. I haven't even got to her formularies - I think I'll stop with that. She's obviously self-taught and for her terminology references - - - I have no idea. The basic creed of magick is not: Harm None, and do as ye will. That's the Wiccan Rede and not all witches, pagans. or practitioners of magick in it's many forms follow this creed. I think her spells will be easy for most people to follow, but I have looked at the components yet to see if they are harmonically correct. Throwing things together because they are the same color will not work every time.
