Book Description
How Hollywood helped prop up the nation's fundamental institutions during the Great Depression. First rate. It should stand for a long time as a pioneer work in a field where all too little has been written. --Alfred B. Rollins, Jr.

Hollywood's American dream and Depression-era realities.......2005-03-05
At a desperate time when Americans had no money for necessities, how did the movie industry turn its own luxury status into a vital part of the country's social and economic recovery? Bergman's look at the themes and ideas expressed in over 100 Depression-era films (gangster movies, comedies, Broadway revues, musicals, serious dramas) is more of a broad overview than an in-depth examination, but he does a good job explaining the industry's role in overcoming the country's deepening crisis. At the same time the industry itself was facing opposition from "moral guardians" to emphasize all-American values, Hollywood's expansive gloss on the American dream reassured uncertain and nervous audiences. The basic values expressed in many 1930s films (hard work overcomes all obsticles for the itinerant and the socialite alike, issues of class aside) reflected a basic trust in the American political and social system, which was being threatened from abroad as well as from within. Although Bergman's slim book is not essential reading, it is entertaining, and good historical background for many lesser-viewed (and lesser-known) films.
OUT DATED FILM CRITICISM.......2003-03-03
In the days before video, if you could get access to twenty or thirty films and come up with a few insights, you could get a book published. This book, written originally for a thesis or dissertation in American studies, is one of those. Occasionally, he comes up with an accurate observation, but much of what he says is based on a very limited familiarity with films of the era. Indeed, most films fans of today, with access to video and classic film stations, will have seen more than Bergman had when he wrote the book.
He follows the traditional line: Mae West was the most incendiary thing on the thirties screen (hardly); the Marx Brothers' DUCK SOUP was daringly political and that's why it was unpopular (not true.) If he'd seen other films about sex besides Mae West's -- or had seen enough films to realize just how political movies could be in the early thirties (when Duck Soup was made), he'd not have jumped to those conclusions. But you can't be an expert by leaping to lofty generalizations based on limited knowledge.
His analysis of the film FAITHLESS, for example, proceeds from a complete misunderstanding of its context. He talks about a daring, feminist film as though it were a throwback because he has no idea of what he's seeing.
Thirty years later, Bergman probably knows better, but the idea of anybody reading this book and thinking they're getting some kind of real knowledge about the subject is saddening. I'd be willing to bet that ninety percent of the people who read this know more about the subject than Bergman did when he wrote about it.
If you like movies you will like this book!.......1999-04-02
This book explores the movies of the 30's in great detail. It covers some of the best movies ever made. If you are a fan of the movies you will be a fan of this too.

Book Description
Who Would You Do? is both a humor book and a provocative parlor game. The premise is deliciously simple: Author Susan Segrest puts forward a celebrity sexual scenario, and the reader (or group of readers) has to choose who to ravish. The result is a wildly addictive fantasy, perfect for bachelorette parties, evenings out with friends, or a day at the beach.
The range of choices is mind—and gender—bending, spanning all walks of life. Who would you do? The Pope or the Dalai Lama? Would you rather have a day at a nude beach with Ben Affleck or a night in the dark with Matt Damon? Who would you rather see perform at your local strip club—Rue McClanahan, Betty White, or Bea Arthur?
Who Would You Do? is omnisexual, perfect for men and women, straight or gay. There are male/male choices (Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones) and female/female choices (Heather Locklear or Heather Graham), as well as a few mix-and-match options (Madonna or Jon Bon Jovi) thrown in just for fun.
Saucy and irresistible,
Who Would You Do? combines three of America’s favorite leisure activities: celebrity watching, reading, and sex.

Coming Together.......2004-03-09
Nothing can bring friends or lovers together like sex and laughter. Who Would You Do is an awesome combination of the two. I take it with me everywhere I go.
OK but wouldn't buy it again.......2003-10-04
I brought it to a bachelorette party. It was OK but not a big deal. I'm sure there are more fun books.
Hilarious!.......2003-08-13
Don't pretend you haven't thought of something like this at least once in your life...This is perfect for girl parties, bachelor parties (strippers are SO over), and any event that you want to spice up. It was a hit at my sister's bridal shower. You'll get a lot of laughs for your buck out of this book!
Great for a Theme Party!.......2003-07-31
I picked up Who Would You Do after Regis and Kelly talked about it and once I read it (and LOVED it!) I KNEW a Who Would You Do theme party would be THE party of the summer. We had a great time and everyone left with a party favor they all loved--a copy of Who Would You Do!
Best Beach Read.......2003-07-04
You need this for your next beach trip with the gang. While Judi Dench, Danny Davito and cheese whiz may not normally show up in your fantasies you can really learn alot about your friends as you argue the merits of each.

Cryptograms: Sink Back And Solve Away! (Armchair Puzzlers)
ASIN: 0806961716 |
Book Description
What do such celebrities as actor Dustin Hoffman, radio host Garrison Keillor, former Vice President Dan Quayle, and writer Ayn Rand have in common? They're all quoted in cryptograms! Each celebrity's words appear on his or her birthday, and there's a quotation for every day of the year. There are two other sections to help "clue" you into the puzzles. Once you've unraveled the mystery, you'll know director Cecile B. De Mille's thoughts on filmmaking; Michael Jordan's feelings about hard work; attorney Clarence Darrow's view of the presidency; food writer James Beard's sly comments on cannibalism; Harry Truman's distinction between recession and depression; David Byrne's and Bono's opinions on music; and Marilyn Monroe's downbeat description of Hollywood. Every cryptogram has a different code, of course, so you'll have to tackle each one separately!
Customer Reviews:
Caution.......2005-03-08
Caution! These cryptograms were pulled from another puzzle book called "Puzzles for a Super-Mind Workout." I'm in the midst of doing these very same puzzles from the other book. These are the exact same puzzles with another title.
Oh yes, the cryptograms are great--funny, interesting, quotable. You'll enjoy. Just don't buy this book if you've done the ones from the other book.
365 Celebrity Crypto-Quotes.......1999-12-14
I loved this book. The cryptos are great for beginners. Not only are the cryptos fun to do, the quotes are fun to read. I highly recommend this book and I hope that the author writes another book because the year is almost over.

There has been a wager that has existed underground for some time now - the Dead Pool. No longer a secret, the Dead Pool has reared its skeletal head out of the soil, and people everywhere are betting their cash on what celebrity they think will be the next to lie down and take the dirt nap.
Let's face it - we live in a culture that glorifies betting. Americans love to risk their money in all sorts of gambling endeavors: casinos, lottery tickets, bingo, and strangely enough, a bunch of dogs chasing rabbit fur attached to a fast moving stick. Gelfand and Wilkinson will provide you with the definite competitive edge needed to make all the intelligent bets on the deaths of others. You can even learn how to organize your own Dead Pool if there isn't one in your office already.
The Dead Pool includes lists compiled by the experts on whom the Grim Reaper currently has in his crosshairs, as well as profiling techniques which illustrate the telltale signs of impending death for a film star, athlete, rock musician or political leader. So read this book, stroke your chin, and place your bets.
Customer Reviews:

Get With It!.......2003-12-15
Here's a book you talk about way after you'd finished reading it! The contents are quick and easy to read at your leisure, and come back to again and again. I've read it on the beach and at the airport and the title always starts a conversation. I've commented on it a few times while chatting with others -- just to see if they are clever too! I'm ordering 3 for Christmas gifts.

The bestselling author of A Millionaire's Notebook shows how to get what you want-faster than you ever thought possible
Based on the bestselling audiobook from Nightingale-Conant,
Mentored by a Millionaire lets readers follow in the footsteps of people who have already achieved the kind of success they long for. Author Steve Scott's own experiences prove that being mentored is more valuable than any formal education-he was fired from nine different jobs after college before he was mentored by an entrepreneurial genius who taught him the strategies, skills, and techniques that eventually made him a millionaire in his own right. Here, Scott shares the wisdom he accrued, coaching you in the fifteen powerful strategies espoused by some of the most successful individuals in the world-and giving you the skills you need to implement them. You'll learn how to use fundamental tools such as vision mapping, effective partnering, using criticism to your advantage, creativity, and persistence. As every great mentor knows, nothing is beyond possibility and no dream is too big to be achieved. Anyone can find unlimited success in both their personal and professional lives by studying and employing the techniques of the models before them.
Mentored by a Millionaire offers the proven advice that can only come from those who are where you want to be.
Steven K. Scott (Salt Lake City, UT) has started more than a dozen multimillion-dollar companies from the ground up, including American Telecast Corporation. He is also the author of
A Millionaire's Notebook and Simple Steps to Impossible Dreams.
Customer Reviews:
Vision Mapping Process Alone Is Worth It........2007-04-02
After reading this book, I decided to purchase the DVD and workbooks. The DVD's put the same information out as the book, but Steve Scott's workbooks in the DVD's are well worth the investment. I have done "vision mapping" a couple of times in my life and to accurately state it from my point of view, the process works. Suggest you read the book before investing in the DVD's. And if you invest in the DVD's you can get re-conditioned sets directly from Steve Scott's company on Ebay for less than half of full retail, which is what I did. The only serious criticism I have of this is Steve Scott's on-going running commentary using a Porche Carrera as an analogy for what doing the program can do for you gets old and is a bit corny. Then again, Steve Scott teaches you to thrive on criticism! Good stuff if you use it!
Fifteen sharp strategies for success.......2007-03-16
Steven K. Scott takes a while to get to his message as he reiterates what he will present and how he struck it rich after failing in his first eight jobs. While his advice is good, if sometimes familiar, you have to be a bit patient to find it since his 15 sharp success strategies aren't always his chapter headings. He offers techniques for turning your personal vision into a reality, and includes numerous anecdotes about how famous historic figures achieved their goals. He also provides useful worksheets, comparison charts, summaries, definitions, steps, actions and goals. Scott tends to repeat examples and spotlight his own achievements, so this is a bit extended, but we find that his detailed case histories and solid counsel carry the day.
The book vs dvd/cd product on tv.......2007-03-02
Just in case anyone was considering trying/purchasing the dvd program on tv, the book has the same info - beware. So, you can pay the $20-30 for the book and read the info yourself or you can pay $600 for the dvds/cds, journal and 2 workbooks and basically have him read it to you. Besides that, the 30 day trial offer actually expires in just under 30 days (calculated from when you are billed not from when you receive the product as the reps tell you). So you will be billed for the first installment within 30 days. Please be aware of that.
The info is decent but very little of it is something original. If you are brand new to the "how to be successful" quest then there is helpful info such as vision mapping and how-to's of communication. Otherwise, if you already know how to write detailed goals and communicate your ideas the material might be a good refresher for you - therefore put into practice what you already know.
Scott can make you rich.......2007-02-17
Another great book by Scott. In this book Scott uses lessons from great like Thomas Edison and Ford to illustrate how persistent, singleness in purpose, and goal driven effort--applied to acquiring wealth--rules the day. I also recommend his book "Millionaire's notebook."
You may want to read similar books on creating wealth, such as "Think and Grow Rich," by Napoleon Hill and "The 17 Principles of Creating Wealth," by Phillip Collinsworth.
Timeless strategies that could be better written.......2007-01-19
Is it just me or did he just rewrite another older book and give it a new name? While there are many classic lessons that he tries to teach that would be invaluable to anyone, his egocentric nature tends to discourage the reader. The book is as much of a biography of himself and his achievements and just how wonderfully rich and successful he is that it takes away from what actually are some worthwhile lessons and strategies that really have been used by many "super achievers" throughout at least modern times, if not history as he proclaims.
