The Cinema of Abbas Kiarostami
ASIN: 0674008448 |
Book Description
This bilingual edition of recent verse by the celebrated Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami (award-winning director of such films as Close-Up and Taste of Cherry) includes English translations of more than two hundred crystalline, haiku-like poems, together with their Persian originals. The translators, noted Persian literature scholars Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak and Michael Beard, contribute an illuminating introduction to Kiarostami's poetic enterprise, examining its relationship to his unique cinematic corpus and to the traditions of classic and contemporary Persian poetry. Of interest to enthusiasts of cinema and literature alike, Walking with the Wind--the second volume in Harvard Film Archive's series "Voices and Visions in Film"--sheds light on a contemporary master who transforms simple fragments of reality into evocative narrative landscapes.

Not haiku ... acute visual perception translated into verse.......2002-04-19
The translators of this work provide a very astute introduction to the poetry placing it in perspective with regards to Kiarostami's cinematography, the Persian poetic tradition and 20th century innovation. Through this they guide the reader to listen for the space between objects compared, to observe the "grand scheme" implied in the particular, to note how the "obvious" is unobserved and surprising.
An example from the introduction of this last point: "... a sycamore leaf / falls softly / and rests / on its own shadow"
The poems are like haiku in that they are minimalist and nature based. However, the sensibility of the cosmic purpose present in these poems differs from the sensibility of cosmic nowness of the (Zen) haiku tradition.
An example: "... the clock /reads seven minutes to seven" reads in these poems as "seven" intentionally invoking cultural connotations. In haiku, it would more likely read as factual observation ... enlightened observation, perhaps, but observation.
The book is beautifully printed, Persian and English side by side, one poem per page. The poems must be read slowly, allowing the visual image time to form in your mind... but what perfect visual images ... images to savour and explore. My one regret ... I cannot read the Persian in this bilingual edition.
Book Description
Abbas Kiarostami's films-Close-Up, Life and Nothing More, Through the Olive Trees, Taste of Cherry (winner of the 1997 Palme d'Or at Cannes), and Ten-have taken their place alongside the masterworks of world cinema. Yet Kiarostami, the most influential filmmaker of post-revolutionary Iran, has produced a body of work that is as rooted in contemporary Iran as it is universal in appeal. Respected cinema historian Alberto Elena has used Iranian sources wherever possible and sought to frame Kiarostami's oeuvre within the context of the rich artistic and intellectual Persian tradition that has nourished the director. He examines his blending of fiction and reality, and his recurring themes of death, meaning in life, isolation, solidarity and the lives of women. Kiarostami's career, from his early days as an illustrator and graphic designer to his current master-status, is also explored.
Book Description
This penetrating study of the Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami's life and work engages a cross-cultural dialogue between Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa, an Iranian filmmaker, and Jonathan Rosenbaum, a film critic, both of whom have an intense interest in Kiarostami's work. A pioneer in Iranian cinema and considered one of the most controversial and influential filmmakers alive, Kiarostami has written or directed more than twenty films. He gained notoriety in the West in the 1990s with the breakaway films Close-Up and Through the Olive Trees and became the first Iranian director to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Taste of Cherry. He is also largely credited for his contributions to the Iranian New Wave. Abbas Kiarostami is the first full-length, English-language study of his work. A unique and resplendent collaboration featuring two distinct but complementing perspectives, the book places Kiarostami and his films in a national context and provides American readers with valuable insights into Iranian culture, Kiarostami's portrayal of women and politics, and his influence on other filmmakers.
Customer Reviews:
Decent intro to this Iranian master.......2005-04-02
This book consists of a 41 page essay by Rosenbaum, a 30 page essay by Saeed-Vafa, a 22 page dialogue between the two authors and ends with 20 pages of various interviews with Kiarostami. Rosenbaum, always a strong proponent of world cinema, gives an good introduction to Iranian cinema in general and also to Kiarostami. Saeed-Vafa writes as a native Iranian and from a feminist perspective. Both essays are interesting and informative.
My major criticism comes in the dialogue between the authors: Rosenbaum uses the conversation to continue a spat he was having with fellow writer Howard Hampton, who thought Rosenbaum liked foreign directors too much and domestic directors too little. While Saeed-Vafa tries to bring the dialogue to more relevant topics, Rosebaum continually brings Hampton back up: "What about Hampton's charge that I..." and later "Maybe Hampton thinks I'm being snobbish..." He just comes off as being petty. The two authors also take shots at well-known movie critic Roger Ebert for not liking Kiarostami.
Overall, this is a good introduction to Kiarostami and I would still recommend it to those interested in him or Iranian cinema in general, but the dialogue section gets a little bogged down with the professional spat between Rosenbaum and Hampton.

A.Delgado.......2006-08-22
This book, written by someone that says he loves Mclaughlin's music, show's very little in the way of love for the music or the man. A total waste of paper and ink.
Do Not Buy This Book.......2004-05-06
I have just read this tome and I am totally disgsuted. Not only is it no more than a poor extended record review but this author has made some HUGE mistakes. 1) pg38 "..the presence of two of the Band of Gypsies, Buddy Miles and the bassist Billy Rich.. His name is Billy Cox!!! 2) pg51 "..when he regarded the astronomical sucess his (white, with the exception of Herbie Hancock) proteges would win... When did Herbie turn white? The mundane droll that ensues could possibly be tolerated if the book was not riddled with such blantant mistakes. I would suggest anyone interested in this book purchase John McLaughlin cds instaed.
Excellent account of McLaughlin.......2002-08-07
This is a tireless history of John McLaughlin and the amazing places and experiences that he has had. Paul Stump has some great insight, as well.
John McLaughlin deserves better.......2000-10-25
There is almost nothing interesting in this book.
Go Ahead John: the Music of John McLaughlin.......2000-05-22
The book starts off very well with interesting antecdotes of McLaughlin's early years. As it progresses, however, there is very little information about McLaughlin the man. There is also very little discription about his years with Miles Davis and the time he spent in India with Shakti. Most of the book seems to focus primarily on reviewing each album one after the other, but many of the reviews are not positive.
Granted, the book is subtitled the "music" of John Mclaughlin, and there is definitely some worthwhile information in the book for McLaughlin fans. A book about his life is long overdue. Its unfortunate that it could not have been written by a closer source or perhaps from the man himself.
Book Description
In this book Swedish grandmaster Tiger Hillarp Persson presents his own favourite defence against 1.e4, the Modern Defence with a6. With his trademark laidback approach, he explains the different White replies to his system. His repertoire is based on deep understanding, common themes, and interesting games, rather than simply theory to be memorized. Pieces are sacrificed in a great number of games and famous grandmasters meet their doom on the pages of this refreshingly lively opening book. In today's chess teaching, opening theory often reaches deep into the middlegame, and players struggle to create something new and inspiring at the chessboard. Here Tiger Hillarp Persson shows that it is possible to be original at an early stage.

Now my main weapon against e4.......2007-01-13
I am a 1600 to 1700 ranked correspondence (web based) chess player who opens with c4 and D4 with white. Developing a reply to black's e4 has been a bit of a challenge for me. I have tried the sicilian, but there is so much theory to learn, both on your chosen variety, and the anti-sicilians.
The modern is a terrific alternative. Statistically it achieves results almost as good as the sicilian, but more importantly for me, most e4 players at my level don't spend time learning it (unlike the sicilian, which is played as much as 50% of the time against e4). Another thought I had when considering the modern was that unlike D4 players, most e4 players haven't spent as much time learning to defeat a fianchettoed kings bishop (D4 players have to due to the popularity of the kings indian).
I purchased Tiger's book as a backup to my sicilian - another option to try. Well, I have now been converted, and use Tigers modern as my main weapon. This is a beautiful book, which really highlights in the introduction to each chapter the key plans for black and white. I have been amazed how often white players fall for simple traps (like advancing the b pawn to challenge knight on c3, allowing capture of e4 pawn), mainly because white is just not familiar with the idea.
I love the chapter on the Hippopotamus, which can be used as an alternative with some of Tiger's lines. Tiger is a fun author to read, his use of a quote by Talking Heads in this chapter (nothing happens in heaven) is for me almost worth the price of the book!
The chapter on c4 is probably not the strongest, but in fairness, it is not that common for an e4 player to play c4 in the first few moves, as this is a D4 opening (c4 can also often be prevented by Nf6 if not played quickly). I don't currently have the confidence to try the modern against a D4 or C4 opening due to this, but this isn't an issue for me. Tiger is very honest about this chapter, and for me, it is enough for the odd situation when C4 does arise soon after e4. The ideas are still very well presented, and accordingly, quick to learn.
This book and the modern may not suit everyone (this isn't orthodox chess), but it has been a godsend for me, resulting in a lot of fun trying to "blow up" white's centre.
Treasure trove of ideas.......2006-03-06
What an interesting opening book. Tiger Hillarp Persson has really put together a treasure trove of games and analysis of the modern. Many of the games are his own and he is not afraid to include his losses and his flawed gems.
First of all, beware. This is not a book which provides complete coverage of the modern. In that respect, it is more like a repertoire book.
From a strict point of view, it is quite likely that some of the analysis in this book is also flawed. The games are full of queen sacrifices and piece sacrifices and they are not to everyone's taste. But then if you want a safe opening, don't play the modern...play the caro-kann instead.
The modern really defies analysis and opening books struggle to deal with its great flexibility. That is why you will find very little theory on the modern. There are so many possibilities for transpositions. The opening is not for everyone. If you are an attacking player who likes open positions, then this opening is not for you. The modern is a slippery opening that avoids contact between the forces in the first few moves. Any opening up of the position has to be carefully weighed, particularly by the player of the black pieces who usually suffers from less space. That said, the modern is like a coiled spring and in the hands of a practititioner who knows what he is doing, weaker players who play the white pieces may suffer rapid self destruction at the hands of this opening.
The book is nicely presented and I have found no typographical errors (yet), which is always a good sign. The glossy front cover is attractive and the diagrams clear. The games are really worth close analysis. Don't read this book with the aim of memorizing some opening variations. The modern is not like that.
But working through the various ideas and transpositions should be beneficial.
The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the coverage of the Averbakh variation of the modern. I really felt that this section was there to provide complete coverage. I am not sure that the author's heart and soul are written into this section to the same extent as they are in the e4 variation sections. Playing 4...e5 against the Averbakh may not be be everyone's taste and those who like the middle game conflicts of the 1. e4 modern may not like the endgame that results from the variation 4 ... e5 5. dxe dxe 6. Qxd8+ Kxd8 7. f4.
All in all, this is undoubtedly the most interesting of all the books I own on the modern.
Tiger is a Killer Book!!!.......2006-02-24
The Book is 2Good, Maybe 3good!! I almost did not write a review out of pure Selfishness.. "Mine mine, all mine mine," to Quote a Famous Duck. Get IT, NuffSaid.
Book Description
The Tiger is a vicious beast. He doesn’t care about the aesthetic side of chess. He doesn’t even care about making the “best” moves. All he cares about is winning. This book will turn players into Tigers who can make the most of their playing strength, take advantage of their opponent’s weaknesses, steer the game into positions that favor their style of play, improve their odds of winning against stronger players, and avoid making silly mistakes. A cult classic in the chess world—now in its third updated and revised edition—this is a must-have for all chess players, especially beginners.
Customer Reviews:
Makes you want to enter a chess tournament right now.......2007-09-23
This is more an inspirational book, rather than focusing on tactics and technique. That isn't to say it lacks chess notations and diagrams, not so at all. However, it focuses on all the aspects of tournament chess. What kind of person are you? What about your opponent? How about that clock problem of yours? It gives you practical tips and advice on how to squeezing the most points out of each and every tournament game you play. And it really works! After reading this, you'd want to enter a chess tournament right then and there to put your latest knowledge into action. No wonder it's become a classic.
Fun and Serious at the same time!!!.......2006-05-14
This was a really fun book to read. Though it is so full of fun ideas to use I ask myself, would they really work? Well, golly, gee whiz, wiliker whezz and flying flezz! I do think that the pscological tactics will certainly work to large degree - but I wouldn't go overboard and really do exactly what this book says in every case. I do have the Winning Chess Tournaments for Juniors book too, that also covers pschological tactics on a purley tournament use idea. Gosh, I would simply recommend getting Chess for Tigers for the fun of it, but also for the ideas it has.
Use Psychology Agressively to be a winner.......2006-05-02
This is really a book on Chess Psychology but not necessarily taking a scientific approach. One thing for sure, this book is fun to read. However, I would take some of the advice with a "grain of salt". For example, "Play the person not the board" is the exact opposite suggestion giving in my other book (more on training, but has a great chapter on practical chess psychology for the tournament player), "Winning Chess Tournaments for Juniors" that suggests you mostly focus on finding the best moves, but the a secondary degree you must keep in mind who your opponent is and give yourself some practical chances. But as mentioned "Chess for Tigers" is enjoyable and fun - but be careful not to take everyting suggested as "gospel".
Read It Twice or More - It Really Gets Better.......2006-04-16
This book is much more about your approach to chess than it is about concrete chess tips, although it does contain a number of interesting and well-chosen illustrative positions. Here's a sample of the sort of thing you'll find in the book:
* Play the person, not the board.
* Are you trying to make the best move or trying to win?
You see the point. The book is about winning approaches, and pretty much anything ethical is in scope (fortunately the book doesn't get into seamier strategies).
That said, we read short and entertaining chapters about things that come up all the time: playing weaker players; playing stronger players; winning a won game; playing drawish situations; avoiding blunders; avoiding time trouble; "swindles" in desperate positions; and much more. You may or may not agree with all of the author's advice, but it is largely cogent and practical. You will find yourself relating to the situations described and you may just pick up some new, winning approaches.
The first time through I didn't care for the book so much, perhaps because it is so different in its content. The second time through was the time when the practicality of Webb's advice started to become clear. So give the book a chance, and you will not be disappointed.
Four stars instead of five simply because it's a very brief book and a bit expensive for what it is.

Book Description
What happens when fire strikes the manufacturing plant of the sole supplier for the brake pressure valve used in every Toyota? When a hurricane shuts down production at a Unilever plant? When Dell and Apple chip manufacturers in Taiwan take weeks to recover from an earthquake? When the U.S. Pacific ports are shut down during the Christmas rush? When terrorists strike? In The Resilient Enterprise, Yossi Sheffi shows that companies' fortunes in the face of such business shocks depend more on choices made before the disruption than they do on actions taken in the midst of it--and that resilience benefits firms every day, disaster or no disaster. He shows how companies can build in flexibility throughout their supply chains, based on proven design principles and the right culture--balancing security, redundancy, and short-term profits. And he shows how investments in resilience and flexibility not only reduce risk but create a competitive advantage in the increasingly volatile marketplace.
Sheffi describes the way companies can increase security--reducing the likelihood of a disruption--with layered defenses, the tracking and analysis of “near-misses,” fast detection, and close collaboration with government agencies, trading partners, and even competitors. But the focus of the book is on resilience--the ability to bounce back from disruptions and disasters--by building in redundancy and flexibility. For example, standardization, modular design, and collaborative relationships with suppliers (and other stakeholders) can help create a robust supply chain. And a corporate culture of flexibility--with distributed decision making and communications at all levels--can create a resilient enterprise.
Sheffi provides tools for companies to reduce the vulnerability of the supply chain they live in. And along the way he tells the stories of dozens of enterprises, large and small, including Toyota, Nokia, General Motors, Zara, Land Rover, Chiquita, Aisin Seiki, Southwest Airlines, UPS, Johnson and Johnson, Intel, Amazon.com, the U.S. Navy, and others, from across the globe. Their successes, failures, preparations, and methods provide a rich set of lessons in preparing for and managing disruptions.

The best one.......2007-02-12
I'm a brazilian doctorean student in Supply Chain Management, and this book is being very important for my studies. It is about the risk end vulnerability that one enterprise can occours, and show examples and tools to use when a disruption occours. Very good.
A very nice effort.......2007-01-12
I lead a relatively large business continuity practice and have recommended this book to my team and clients. It's not that there is so much new information for me, but it is packaged very well and the war stories alone are worth the price of admission.
If you are looking for a book covering the IT aspects of resilience this is not for you, but if you want some exposure to improving the resilience of the operational side of your organization I believe you will find this book extremely helpful.
Stating the obvious.......2006-10-31
The book can be used as a repository of useful anecdotes. However, it doesn't bring much new. If you're a beginner in the SCM field then it will definitely open your eyes to some operational challenges companies face all the time. But for the experienced professional, this book is of no great value (some of the anecdotes are interesting though)...
We, as supply chain professionals, need to upgrade our thinking and admit that our role is not to eliminate uncertainty but rather mitigate it... and that's the best we can do... as such, one cannot possibly come up with a bullet proof model but rather an approach to handle risk... the key attribute to all of this thinking is how much risk we can live with? that's it... truly, that's all that's needed to be told!
My reaction to the example of Apple reducing its inventory and then getting a major supply disruption because of some disaster in Asia is So?
What can you do? The only thing you can is to define your tolerance for risk and conduct some tradeoff analysis: what matters more? keeping low level of inventory and therefore reducing likelihood and scope of obsolescence (tangible)? or is it minimizing potential for lost sales (intangible)? That's the basic question.
Good insight wrapped in useful anecdotes.......2006-02-28
You can easily see that this book began its life as an academic exercise. Part of me wishes that the author paired up with some one like Malcolm Gladwell to produce that "Do not blink while tipping over to Resiliency" bestseller. My professional part is glad that did not happen. The book clearly illustrates how corporate culture plays an unrecognized but extremely important role in keeping organizations fresh and resilient. It also showcases, how many companies are fairly successful also-rans, a phenomenon unexplored in this book. For all the supply-chain wizardry of Dell and failure of Apple, both are still in business [as of this review] with comparable market caps. Clearly having super-efficient supply chain is not everything, and the book stays true to its focus and ignores these other tangibles and intangibles.
As a professional in resiliency space, I was very impressed by the book, and spent a lot of time mulling over the content. It is a great book for line of business managers to read, and think through their own processes and responses to crisis. In fact, my company even gives away this book to prospective customers and raffles it off at conferences.
On the other hand, the book could have been shorter, and [understandably] relies primarily on data from companies the author has had the most access to. Therefore, it becomes unclear how companies like Apple or FedEx are still in business, not to mention a myriad other competitors to Dell and UPS respectively. Clearly having fresh product ideas, or even completely different approaches have their own resiliency-related benefits as well, and I think the book could have spent some time talking about that.
No book is perfect, and overall, I highly recommend that every manager, or aspiring business person read this book and reflect on it for a week or two.
The best in a decade.......2006-02-08
The Resilient Enterprise is the best business book I have read in the last ten years. It should be on the required reading list for Business Continuity Professionals and it should be mandatory reading for CEO's.
I have shipped copies to many of my associates.
