Book Description

This is the first full-length biography of the visionary Hollywood filmmaker Tim Burton, director of Batman, Batman Returns, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Peewee's Big Adventure, Tim Burton's The Nightmare before Christmas, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks!, and Sleepy Hollow. More than an examination of his body of work, this book takes an in-depth look at Tim Burton's personal life, which until now the reclusive director has managed to keep under wraps.Author Ken Hanke examines the frail, wild-haired fellow whose unique, introverted feature films are passionately admired by many and dismissed by others. How does he command the respect of so many big names in a creative industry not much known for good judgment? How has he managed to carve out an impossibly personal and quirky body of work within the confines of the most mainstream venues of establishment Hollywood? You'll learn about:* Tim Burton's unhappy childhood; to this day he has no relationship with his family* the real reason why Tim Burton left Disney after Ed Wood* his collaborations with talent such as Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Vincent Price (his idol), and Danny Elfman* the autobiographical elements in Edward Scissorhands* Tim Burton's often disastrous involvement with other people's projects* the ramifications of excessive power-- the Batman Returns debacle* the collapse of the Superman Reborn project

2 out of 5 stars No good.......2003-01-14

It's very boring and all. I've read and re-read my copy of Burton on Burton, and this book provides me with no new information. Hanke even goes so far as to quote from the interviews Salisbury assembled into Burton on Burton. It's annoying, reading through this book, since Hanke seems to insist that he knows exactly what's going on in Burton's mind. He over-analyses absolutely everything, bringing Burton's films down to a level where nothing is truly worth anything. According to Hanke, Pee Wee's Big Adventure is all about sexual stuff. Honestly, for three pages, every other word is sex. Methinks perhaps Hanke is not so much telling us what Burton thinks, but what he would think if he was Burton.

Also, the writing feels to me like something I might write on a late night to turn in the next morning to my 10th grade english teacher. The style seems to be that of an essay, not a book.

My final complaint is the huge editing mistake I found. At the beginning of the chapters, Hanke gives a quote. At the beginning of one, I was shocked to see the words "I know I am but what are you?" Anyone who's seen the movie can tell you the quote it "I know you are but what am I?", and it amazes me that such a large error slipped through and made it into print.

3 out of 5 stars Much Insight, but Poorly Written and Filled With Summary.......2000-12-16

Ken Hanke's autobiography provides much insight into Burton's childhood, adolescence, early career, etc. However, Hanke spends too much time in summarizing the plots of Burton's films and not enough time in relating those plots to their production or to his life in general. Hanke's writing is also loose and cumbersome at times, making for an unneccessarily awkward read. Why must he constantly use exclamation points where none are needed? Such punctuation is distracting and useless--if a sentence is going to surprise or shock us, it won't be because of the punctuation. I'd recommend keeping an eye out for future, more scholarly biographies of a director who deserves the Spoto treatment.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly Needless Info.......2000-08-07

This biography does contains some cool information, but not enough to carry this 245 page book. Any Burton fan should know this much about him. Hanke gives too many decriptions of the films, and goes one step at a time rounding the movies together. The true book to own is Burton on Burton.

4 out of 5 stars Behold the fruit of pensive nights and laborious days..........2000-07-07

Richard D. Altick wrote, in The Scholar Adventurers: ''If it is permissable sometimes to reconstruct biography on the basis of the known proclivities of one's hero...'' This comment was used as a forward to Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street,a book in which William S. Baring-Gould writes a biography of Sherlock Holmes based on all the facts revealed about him in the Canon, and because Baring-Gould is an excellent writer, the book is a fun and amusing read.

The same holds true for this biography of the almost-as enigmatic director, Tim Burton. He rarely gives interviews (in which he says anything of substance, anyway) and guards his private life. To write a biography of such a subject requires a love of that subject (a love of that subject's works, at least), ingenuity, and dedication, and such has been provided here by Ken Hanke. His writing flows smoothly, and more importantly than anything else, his book causes one to think - to compare their reactions to a particular film to Hanke's own.

If you are a fan of Burton, this book is highly recommened.

1 out of 5 stars A very stupid, but moderately entertaining, book.......2000-06-22

While Tim Burton is a fascinating subject, Ken Hanke has produced a truly stupid book about him. Most of his information is gathered from previously published interviews (few of which were conducted by the author) and when he has nothing of substance to say (which is most of the time) Hanke simply provides a synopsis of the particular film in question. Also, his attempt to analyze Burton's films in light of what sketchy biographical information Hanke has constructed is at best simplistic and at worst, inept. It is pop-psychoanalysis at its worst, on the level of a freshman class paper, instead of what one would expect from a professional journalist. This book should be considered to be on par with the other hastily-compiled unauthorized biographies of celebrities, fun for gossip, but not much else. Read "Burton on Burton" if you want to learn anything of substance .

    Book Description

This is the compelling story of the life of internationally acclaimed cello virtuoso, Yo-Yo Ma, from the cradle to his entering Harvard University at the age of seventeen. It is told by his mother and written by Dr. John A. Rallo.

Written in fluent, warm and conversational style, the book highlights the events in the development of this young music talent and is enriched by numerous photographs from the family album.

By telling the story of her son, Marina Ma hopes other young people will realize that hard work is a part of growing up, even for talents, and pain is sometimes inevitable. Life is full of hopes though it is a continuous struggle, and love is the main sustaining force keeping the family together especially during difficult times.

5 out of 5 stars this was great!.......2001-11-05

this was a great biography! it was written so that it flows; it's packed with information, but really interesting and intriguing to read. i recommend it for anyone, especially music lovers :) it's an influentially beautiful piece.

    2 out of 5 stars Sorry but I cannot tell a lie..........2001-05-31

This is a bad book! As much as I am a fan of Yo-Yo's music, and with the wish to learn more about this great person, I really felt disappointed after reading this book. The writer, John Rallo, don't seem to know enough about Yo Yo Ma; his writing style was very deattached, it was written like from the 'fourth-person' or maybe the 'nth-person' perspective. Marina Ma, Yo Yo's mother, had her name as the co-author of this book; but she didn't done any of the actual penning. And whatever little information she had related to Mr. Rallo, was common facts that could be found from old newspaper and magazine articles.

    5 out of 5 stars It's just wonderful........2001-03-12

It is an absolutely fantastic book. The 'making' of Yo-Yo Ma a great cellist is unveiledto the audience. Mr Ma's unrivalled achievements since his youth are beyond doubt. I find it most touching and enjoyable in the mother's memories of events surrounding the parental families in difficult times; and the conversations amongst the Mas, old and young throughout the period. It is a book of love, care and understanding that has been manifested and shared by these fine people in a tri-cultural background.

5 out of 5 stars a fantastically written book that cellist should try reading.......1999-03-17

the idea for ma's mother to right the book was great and it is the only book about him that i have found! i was doing my research paper on him and there just werent any books. i liked the way it explained were his family originated from, lots of people have wondered that!!! best book i've read in years

3 out of 5 stars beat the percentages by playing the percentages!.......2007-07-07

bravo Mr.C for your tremendous chapters 3 and 17! ironically just before I bought this book my wife and I had a mild debate about these 21st century dealers that now SEEM to be tougher than ever! I complained "I can handle losing for a while but some times I see dealers having ten cards up 7 out of ten times backed by another face card for 5 or six hands more! And this goes on for hours! Cindy replyed "the cards have to be magnitized in some way!" AT First I thought cindy had lost "some of her cards!" however when I read your chapter on the advent of plastic cards into the game which create a strong degree of static electricity {which is magnetisim} I had to offer her an apology! Now Im more careful than ever about watching dealers up cards than ever and players stiffs! A player or dealer is supposed to get a 20 1 out of 7 hands!! Hmmmmm! nough said and thanks for opening up the eyes of a 20 yr.blackjack veteran! 2+2 now equals 4. although I still dont move if I lose 4 in a row (sorry mr. Thomason author of 21st century blackjack and a good friend of mine} I watch the dealers up cards and the distribution to the players VERY CAREFULLY! If I see that garbage goin on for one or 2 shoes I move pronto! NOW- to the serious stuff! I think youve done a tremendous job of calculating all these percentages and your book will forever remain with me for REFERENCE PURPOSES ONLY! Ive played at home (thank God) using your basic revised for "percentage expectaions" Ive played over 30 shoes (6 decks real cards and chips) and ive not one a shoe yet!! Hmmmm! O.K. readers here a just a few moves printed in black and white which you will replace "the outdated standard basic strategy" 1st of all you said to reply on your gut feelings on certain plays! then you said dont assume the dealers 10 in the hole because it will bey there just 31% of the time! OK I buy that 31% percent but I still fear and respect an up card 0f 10! then youre telling us (and apologising at the same) saying that you dont treat the ace with as much fear as most people do! and then in black and white you tell us to stand on all 12-16 breaking hands against the ace! come on now! even without the blackjack the dealer is hitting to TWO hands simutaneously! {one and eleven) and will break only about 15% of the time! Yeah! lets talk percentages! then you tell us if our intuition or guts feel it too split tens and keep splitting them (hands that win 93-95% of the time! and then you told us that even if you pull an ace for 21 to double down on a hand that wins or pushes 100% of the time. ENOUGH SAID! Readers im asking all of you a favor! try this strategy as I have with cards and chips (and for heavens sake at home) keep track of the # of hands you win and lose! ill let you take it from there! then try it with the "outdated old-fashioned stratgey" OK? then please review the book! remember also this strategy robs you of tons of doubles and splits! (the way we make our money) well ENOUGH SAID! If youre making a living at 21 playing this way.I wish you continued success! I remain Dr.Robert P. Balaban D.C.-international chess player-international concert pianist and amateur Blackjack player" No hard feelings I hope but ive got to be honest!

This is one of many dreadful books on BJ - I read it in a shop, without buying it, thank goodness. He presents an "altered" form of basic strategy, which flies in the face of the years of work done by the earlier BJ experts (Thorpe, Braun), seemingly based on the principle of avoiding busting bustable hands, and he claims that players tend to receive bad hands (14, 15, 16) because small and large cards tend to "stick together" after the shuffle! This book's advice will cause you to 1) bust fewer hands and 2) lose even more money. Avoid!

      Book Description

While many books offer sample forms and advice about drafting clauses for retail, office, and industrial leases, few examine the essential business issues underlying each clause of the lease from both sides of the negotiating table — tenant and landlord alike.

Whether you are a business owner about to sign a lease, a real estate professional determined to draft the ideal transaction for your client, or a landlord looking to protect profits and property simultaneously, Negotiating Commercial Real Estate Leases can help you understand

*The obvious and not-so-obvious differences between “standard” landlord and tenant leases.
*Specific negotiating strategies for retail/shopping center, office and industrial leases.
*The critical economic and legal issues at stake in each clause of the lease.
*Which points are most easily negotiated under what situations and which points aren't worth the time spent arguing.
*What alternative clauses and solutions can be offered to create a deal that works for both parties.

As the basics of term, rent, premises, assignment, maintenance, insurance, default, taxes, alterations, and more are covered, author Martin Zankel uses wit and wisdom to break down confusing legalisms and offer basic negotiating strategies for each situation.

The book also includes two appendixes that provide examples of a tenant-oriented lease and a landlord-oriented lease.

I am an attorney who regularly handles leases for a large company. I had hoped that this book would be a practical guide to negotiating commercial real estate leases, but it seemed more like a theoretical tract than a useful tool in my practice.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely worth it.......2007-03-15

I am new for leasing commercial properties - but it definitely gave a foundation on the required check list and clauses I should look for. I am going to use this to crosscheck my attorney's final draft and to make sure the attorney did not miss anything important.

Would definitely recommend as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars Review by Steven Vornea.......2006-12-11

Negotiating Commercial Real Estate Leases is an informative guide for the business owner and full of important information regarding the ins and outs of leases. I would highly recommend this book, although it might not be as helpful to those who work outside the specific niche that the title suggests.

This book is very informative and well written. Mr. Zankel offers a number of excellent examples and some very well written and usefull clauses. I enjoyed his writing style and sense of humor. The only negative is that I was hoping for a more step-by-step plan that was offered. It is a fine book and should be in every leasing agents library.

      Adam P. Von Romer, CCIM

2 out of 5 stars reads like a legal document.......2006-10-30

The book reads more like a dry legal document than a helpful consumer friendly book written with checklists and perhaps a simulated negotiation indicating what to start out looking at first, must have's vs nice to have's in a lease (based on realistic market conditions), etc. The book is more appropriate for real estate agents than a small business owner about to sign a lease. Maybe its a 5 for a commercial real estate agent but a 2 for a prospective tenant

                    Product Description

This manual will provide tools for you and your clients concerning current issues involved in negotiating commercial real property purchases, sales, and leases. The authors will highlight legal issues that real estate professionals confront when negotiating real estate purchases and sales. Explanations of how to approach negotiating these concepts will be provided from both a sellers and purchasers perspective. The authors will approach the subject of negotiating leases in a similar way, offering negotiating perspectives and strategies for both tenants and landlords. Although the general format of the course will be instructional, it is designed to permit and encourage those attending to ask questions and pose hypothetical situations for in-depth discussions. The authors will also analyze portions of an annotated lease agreement with alternate tenant-oriented and landlord-oriented clauses.
