Jim Carrey is getting smarter and smarter. The crude, rich clown took far less than the $20 million he could have gotten in order to star in Peter Weir's film The Truman Show, which made the covers of Time and Entertainment Weekly as "The Year's Best Movie." Carrey plays Truman Burbank, a man whose entire life has been a hit TV docudrama without his knowledge. This screenplay (by Gattaca author Andrew Niccol) is required reading, and the 35 good-quality color stills from the film in the photo album at the center of the book are nicely laid out with helpful, intelligent captions.

But The Truman Show: The Shooting Script also offers something not found in theaters: the back-story to the script, written by director Weir, who has never been weirder. It was so important to the creation of the movie that Weir actually hired Harry Shearer to help create a "mockumentary"--a documentary on the making of the movie. The mockumentary was scrapped, though a few scenes wound up in the finished film; what Weir gives you here is the whole prequel, "A Short History of The Truman Show." It tells how Christof (played by Ed Harris in the film), a promising, idealistic, Oscar-winning documentarian concerned with homeless people, conspired with shady ex-NASA operatives and the terrifying Omnicam Corp. to create a fake town full of actors and imprison the unsuspecting child Truman Burbank in it by messing with his head. For instance, they made Truman afraid of water so that he wouldn't swim away from his "home." It's a trip--and it just might provide a peek into certain dark crannies of the mind of Oscar-winning director Peter Weir. Just because you've seen The Truman Show, you don't know everything in this book. --Tim Appelo

4 out of 5 stars Fake Reality Show.......2006-06-01

The Truman Show is about Truman Burbank, the main character, and his fake life. He lives in Seahaven an artificial world that has only built for him. When he finds out that he is part of a reality show he wants to escape. Everybody betrayed him even his wife Meryl and his best friend Marlon who are actors like everybody in his world Seahaven.
The author wants to warn people of the danger of the modern media
culture and high technology.
We must be mor critical of the invented world of the television and think about its effect on us.
I like the book because it includes everything: lovestory, friendship, tension... It is dramatic but from time to time also funny.

4 out of 5 stars TS.......2006-06-01

The Truman Show is a drama with a lot of funny aspects. It deals with a young man whose whole life is documented in a reality show. The reviewers can watch him all day in the whole world.
The duration of the show was for 29 years without bigger problems but one day, Truman, the main character, seems to find out the truth about his life. He notices that everything is artificial and that his whole world is made fake only for him. Christof, the director of the show loses the control over Truman when the latter tries to escape. Christof does everything to stop him and keep him in the town where the Truman Show takes place- Seehaven. The message of the Truman Show is that our society is losing control more and more and that we let ourselves be influenced by the media and TV. We think the book is good, because it shows the problems of our society and what the manipulation of the media could result in. It is represented in a very funny way.

The book "The Truman Show" by Andrew Niccol was written in the 20th century. The story is about a 29 year old man who has been televised every moment of every day. The book is mostly dramatic but sometimes funny. Truman Burbank lives in a small artificall town named "Seaheaven". This world was created by Chrsitof, the director of the reality-show. In this show everyone of his frinds is an actor. The only genuine person is Lauren. He has fallen in love with her.

Imagine you find out that nothing in your life is genuine, you are controlled by others and everythin is filmed by cammeras so that millions can watch you. This is the message of the book. And it should make you think about how the media control our lives.

I like the story because we can identify with Truman and his situation. I recommend the film and the book because sometimes it is quite funny.

3 out of 5 stars Review of "The Truman Show".......2006-06-01

The Truman Show written by Andrew Niccol in 1998 shows the last few days of a reality show. Truman Burbank is the main character. He is the only person in this show who is no actor. Everything around him is fake. Even his hometown Seahaven is only a film studio but Truman doesn't know this. Christof is the director who controls everything. He gives the directions to his parents, his wife and his friend. In these last few days a lot of strange things happen so that Truman may soon find out everything.
Andrew Niccol wants to show the impertinence of the media which do not respect the rights of human beings.
In my opinion the subject of the book is very interesting and it is worth dealing with it. But in this case it is easier to watch the movie because the book is difficult to read because of all the stage directions.

    Book Description

"What we see, and what we seem, are but a dream, a dream within a dream." Michael Bliss views Miranda's voice-over at the beginning of Picnic at Hanging Rock as so pivotal in explaining the films of Peter Weir that he borrows her words to create the title of his own study of the Australian filmmaker's work.

Bliss views Weir as an artist whose values are rooted in the realm of the dream, of the unconscious. Surrealistic in technique, Weir avoids the pedestrian assurances of a material realm in favor of an irresolution that, while potentially frustrating, is nonetheless for him a more truthful representation of what he considers reality. For Weir, as for Plato, Bliss demonstrates, "empirical reality is nothing more than a shadow of what is real."

Bliss also considers Weir's heritage. Australian cinema, Bliss explains, is characterized by melodramatic narratives born of a desire to see good and evil portrayed in striking opposition. Weir, for example, dramatizes the contradictory forces of light versus darkness, reason versus mystery, and rationality versus magic in such films as Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Last Wave. This melodramatic emphasis is evident as well in the polarized characterizations in such films as Witness, Dead Poets Society, and The Truman Show.

Bliss also discusses Weir's use of another staple of Australian cinema— "mateship," the celebration of the bond between male companions. But by making self-knowledge dependent on action involving one's friends, Weir gives mateship a new meaning. Moreover, like other Australian filmmakers, Weir emphasizes the starkness of the Australian landscape, which functions either as a hazard or a deadly challenge, at least until American mythology caused him to see nature in a more positive light. Also prominent in Weir's films is an Australian spirit of rebellion coupled with the Aussie ambivalence toward all aspects of British culture.

To help explain Weir's films, Bliss looks to Freud and Jung, whom Weir has studied, and also to two other prominent purveyors of myth and archetype, Northrop Frye and Joseph Campbell. Virtually all Weir characters struggle toward a new mode of awareness, a psychological awareness based on archetypal truths. Many of his films involve archetypal journeys heading through conflict to spiritual unity. Weir's quest is to find out what we really know and how we know what we know.

      Book Description

Peter Weir is, without doubt, one of the most important Australian film directors of all time. His films have had a major impact, both in terms of the Australian film industry (Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Cars That Ate Paris, and Gallipoli) and as the work of an innovative auteur working within the confines of the Hollywood system (Witness, Dead Poets Society, Fearless, and The Truman Show).

This fully revised and updated edition of Jonathan Rayner's acclaimed study takes an in-depth look at the career of a filmmaker who has, over the course of 30 years, put together a substantial and much-loved body of work. Rayner illustrates how Peter Weir brings a consistent vision to his films, no matter how disparate their subject matter - and how he uses his 'outsider' status in the American film industry to his advantage.

3 out of 5 stars An ok analysis of the Australian auteur.......2006-06-28

"The Films of Peter Weir" analyzes the body of work of the Australian director from his earlier art house movies up through the Hollywood movie The Truman Show in 1998.

The chapters each analyze two of Weir's movies. Sometimes this is interesting (the chapter on Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously), but in other chapters, it's kinda weird (Dead Poets Society and Green Card?). I thought the best information came in the chapter on Picnic at Hanging Rock and the chapter about The Year of Living Dangerously, in which the author compares the structure of the film to a wayang, or a Javanese shadow play.

The book was a slow read for me, though, and I think it's because the writing felt like an academic trying to write on a popular subject rather than a popular writer writing about it, (if that makes any sense). If you're a die-hard Weir fan, you will definitely want to get this book. But I see there are a few other books on Weir out there, so those might be more suitable if you're just a casual fan.

3 out of 5 stars Not as Good as Other Beatles Books.......2007-04-18

I did not hate this book but I can only give it 3 stars because: 1)Many of these interviews are not "lost" especially the press conferences. These can be found on line on an excellent web site that I'm not allowed to mention by name. On the site they are in chronological order from October 1962 to around 1970,and even beyond. Being familiar with this site,I realized that Guiliano reprints some of these interviews with many mistakes. Maybe he got them from newspaper archives and the mistakes were already there and he unwittingly reprinted them, but the wrong quotes are attributed to the wrong Beatles. For instance, a lot of things that Paul said are wrongly attributed to John or Ringo, etc. The web site published these interviews from the original audio tapes, and actual video so these are the correct, uncut interviews. In this book Giuliano reprints chopped up versions with as mentioned, many mistakes. Next reason this book wasn't the best: I believe that Mr. Guiliano is a propagandist who has a personal dislike for Paul McCartney, and he doesn't exactly love Ringo Starr or John Lennon either. Why doesn't he like McCartney? Well he never worked for Paul or the Beatles, and although he has met Paul, he never had a personal relationship with him. He has however, enjoyed a lovely relationship with those two sad sacks, Denny Lane and his wife JoJo. He even reprints an interview that HE conducted, complete with sexy photo, with Ms.Lane. In this scintillating interview he asks many leading questions and JoJo is only too happy to blame all of her life's woes on the McCatneys. She blames the failure of her marriage on....you guessed it...the McCartneys. She doesn't make the connection between her admitted, "affairs" and the demise of her marriage, no she chalks it up to not being allowed on all the Wings tours. Why was she banned? It seems that Linda was very insecure about being married to Mr. Gorgeous, and not being very attractive herself. She was jealous of JoJo's beauty, and felt that JoJo was a coniving groupie who was after her husband. This probably has something to do with the filthy love letter that JoJo sent to Paul when he was still in the Beatles. A letter that was obviously so sexy that he kept it. In fairness,Linda did have a lot to be insecure about, also she probably sensed that Paul was attracted to JoJo. How could he not be? I'm sure Paul would not have acted on his attraction but why not be extra careful, and keep temtation as far away as possible? This interview is very revealing, but c'mon people like JoJo Lane are hardly a reliable source. As for Mr. G's oppinion of Ringo? He doesn't seem to have one. You see he's too upset about the fact that Pete Best was sacked. He seems to think that Best was the real talent in the group, and if it weren't for that creep McCartney,(yeah, he gets blamed for this too) the world would not have missed out on all of that mean, moody, magnifisense. I guess he hasn't heard Anthology 1. Best's drumming sounds like he put shoes on his hands and started banging on his pushy mother's pots and pans. Also, this so called Beatles 'expert' has obviously not heard George Harrison's admission that HE was the one behind replacing Pete with Ringo. But George seems to be the only Beatle that Guiliano approves of. Probably because he shares George's love of Indian religion. If you are a Beatles scholar, you may want this book just to have a complete collection of Beatles books, and there are some interesting offerings, especially the "Inner Circle" section. However, you were forewarned. Proceed with caution.

5 out of 5 stars Rachel O. Miller Place, NY.......2004-11-10

'' The Lost Beatles Interviews" informs fans, like myself, about history of the beatles through an oral biography. Geoffrey Giuliano captures the beatles personalities, from when they were no-bodies to famous musicians.

This book shows their witty, clever personalities that just makes you love them even more. "Question: Do you enjoy press conferences? John: Yes, depending on the intelligence of the question." It will make laugh and at the same time inform you of their great triumphs.

'The Lost Beatles Interviews," was entertaining and kept you interested throughout the whole book. It let you know what was on their minds and their opinions of their success. One issue that the book suggested was not to take drugs. The problem was addressed after their manager, Brian Epstein, died at the age of 32. Another conflict, was their point of view they had on God. They tried to keep religious beliefs to them self's after John made a Jesus remark and had to apologies for it. These issues relate to me because there are students that still take drugs and maybe if they never had role models this wouldn't be an issue now. I also don't take John's remark personally because I believe we're all entitled our opinions.

You can read other issues that the Beatles had to confront throughout history, once you get this book. I would defiantly recommend this book to future Beatles fans. It will help you understand and appreciate their work. It can even bring you and your parents closer together.

5 out of 5 stars HISTORY COMES TO LIFE IN THIS GREAT BOOK.......2004-02-01

I loved this well put together collection of interviews with the Beatles and their inner circle. Thank heavens for this book. These interviews are indeed historical and might well have been lost to time if it wasn't for the efforts of author Giuliano. A must read for all Beatles fans.

1 out of 5 stars "Lost"? Says who?.......2002-11-29

First of all - these interviews were never lost, just ignored for the marginal value they have.

Second - Beatles? Hardly, except for press conference quotes and peripheral documentation.

What's that leave us with in this "Lost Interviews" book? More collating and occasional primary work with questionable expert witnesses (Jo Jo Laine? AGAIN?) - and collation is the work of a clerk, not a scholar.

I'd ask how this so-called, self-appointed "expert" Giuliano sleeps at night after ripping off unsuspecting Beatles fans, but given the volume of his "work", I'd say he probably sleeps VERY well off all that Beatle-money.

              5 out of 5 stars BEATLES FOREVER.......2002-10-12

Really liked it and took the time to say it here. What a GREAT writer / researcher Giuliano is! The group's not bad either...

3 out of 5 stars Great subject matter; mediocre product.......2007-08-07

The Beatles were so charismatic, interesting, quotable and funny, it's hard to imagine that a compilation of Beatles interviews could miss the mark. But The Lost Beatles Interviews is off target.

For me, the book started off on a sour note, in the introduction, with Giuliano's somewhat sophomoric summation of McCartney's career and potential. Not absent, of course, was the high praise for both Lennon and Harrison, very easy, predictable stances (after Lennon's death and Harrison's post-Wilbury's resurrection.) Lennon and Harrison were certainly brilliant artists and fascinating people, but Giuliano's reputation as an alleged Beatles expert would suggest he would know better than to dismiss all but two years of McCartney's music career as rather "inconsequential."

Since the bulk of the interviews are of the Beatles themselves, the book keeps your attention. Where it loses its power is in the poorly done interviews with the likes of Pete Best -- who should be a fascinating interview subject and -- Gerry Marsden of Pacemakers fame. The author himself, who interviewed Mr. Best, practically gushed to his subject about how he was known around Liverpool to be a superior drummer to Ringo. That may or may not be the case, but the kissing-up-to-the-subject was almost too much to take. Any amateur can do that. Marsden, despite Giuliano's best efforts, was a lousy interview. He offered virtually no insight into the Beatles other than to say Mr. Lennon was a great guy and that the Beatles and the other Liverpool bands were rock and rollers.

A highlight of the book is Harrison's press conference with Madonna to promote the film Shanghai Surprise. He gave the press what it had coming to it for years of lazy, sensational, mean-spirited work. Conversations with friends and family members of the Beatles were also quite nice.

There is a lot of good in this book but it would have been better had someone else done the (non-historic) interviews.

This is a very good instructional book with a lot of information all levels of players.

5 out of 5 stars This book is great.......2006-05-16

I've tried other pool instruction books, but they never really helped me to improve my game. Then I got this one. Schneider makes everything so simple and clear that after just a few short months I am now playing at a whole new level. My friends can't believe some of the shots I make. Banking, kicking, even combinations . Plus, they can't figure out how after making one shot, I always seem to be perfectly set up for the next one. (That's thanks to the chapter on Position Play.)

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to become a better pool player.

5 out of 5 stars Business By THE Book.......2005-08-10

This book is not for someone wanting to get rich quick! If you are a Christian business owner wanting to run your business according to God's word, this book explains God's word and gives helpful tips to follow through with His word.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Thought Provoking Resource.......2005-07-20

In a world where the current business ideology seems to be about maximizing short term profits, climbing over others, and getting the maximum return possible with the minimal effort or investment Larry Burkett draws a sharp contrast.

Using referenced Biblical principles throughout the book Mr. Burkett outlines what it means to run a business by God's standards. This does not mean becoming a non-profit or lossing money - but it does mean completely changing the way we view the business, our employees and customers, and our role as business leaders. The principles laid out are challenging and often contrary to the advice you are used to hearing.

I found it to be an extremely useful and informative resource that helped me to see how I could not only run a business successfully, but also not sacrifice my concience or ideals. One of the primary tenents of this book is that we are stewards of the resources God gave us, meaning that the money we have and the business we may own ultimately belong to God, not us, and he has entrusted us with them to use in a manner he would approve of. If you are comfortable with this premise I believe you will enjoy the book and find it challenging. If you are not comfortable with this premise you will probably have difficulty accepting the concepts he has outlined.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting with reservations. .......2004-12-13

The book covers many subjects one needs to think about as a Christian in business. It gives advice based on many many actual experiences that he's encountered while counseling including hiring, firing, and many tough convoluted business situations. For many people needing an orientation to general business and the moral dilemmas one faces these are quite fascinating. Just reading them may help you stay out of some real bad business situations and get a feel for what can go wrong. Much of his advice is buried in paragraphs rather than bold lettered or otherwise separated to make it absolutely clear. I do the best I can extracting a small bit of it below that I found somewhat extreme. Overall an interesting read that people fully knowledgeable of the bible and life will find themselves arguing with occasionally. I respectfully question from the 1998 edition:

                * Says to tithe from Gross Income (aka income before taxes page 237). Apparently suggests the business should tithe as well as the individual and from Gross "before tax" income. Suggests this in spite of the fact that the individual is already tithing from personal income which includes on stock dividend income which of course means that the business is tithing via the stock owner tithing on the dividends. If no dividends are paid then the tax and tithe are due upon sale since no income is realized until sale. He plainly does not understand or sidesteps the concept of double taxation and income realization of owners though judging from his writing tone I bet he would argue bitterly saying that he does understand this. See for yourself on page 238 and all the rest of Chapter 19. In the bible the Jewish government allowed paying tithe as first fruits but our non-Christian government does not so how can we realistically obey this?

                * Suggests the twentieth century tithe is the same as old testament tithe under a biblical government. Problem is the tithe was paid to Mekezdek (spelling?) a priest-&-king and to the old testament church only when the church was acting as the church-&-government yet he says the tithe should not be adjusted in amount today when the church is no longer the government (page 234). Ludicrous.

                * Says "If you aren't willing to perform what you vow (promise to do), even at the cost (of loosing) all your material assets, then you have...a spiritual problem (p. 81). So what if you make an honest mistake? Is it to everyone's benefit and does it make God happy that you loose everything trying to pay back what you can't?

                * Asserts that Paul's suggestion of women as assistants to men (as Genesis also says) only applies within the church or in some family situations and maybe not in all. He worms around this issue enough to satisfy everyone and as we know you can't satisfy everyone and the bible on this issue. From a practical standpoint he really sets the bible's overall direction to the side on this issue even though underneath it all he may be more conservative than he lets on. Read the book to see for yourself (pages 119, 156).

                * The bible translation used isn't named anywhere that I can find and this matters in these days of so many translations and when the translating teams contain many non-Christians who have declared an agenda to change the bible from its original intentions and evolve it to something different to their liking.

                * May have confused the suing Christians issue since tells a story of a person not counter suing a person that has proved he is not really a Christian by his constant lying. Certainly you could sue a slanderous stealing non-Christian couldn't you? See page 208. He apparently sees the use of the courts as only a defense to clear their name if the other person waves the "I'm a Christian flag". Again ludicrous, as it is suggested as admirable that a certain business man allows the loss of about $200,000 to avoid suing a previous business associate that was obviously faking Christianity. What happened to treating someone who refuses the counsel of multiple Christians as though that person was a non-Christian (Mathew 18:15 to 18:17)?

Conclusion: Worth reading for those entering business for its story telling style of business situations and problems that one can fall into. The book gives much good advice and should be applauded for tackling tough issues. Deserves a 3 to 5 rating depending on whether you expect the author to be right about everything; this reader did not consider him to be.
