5 out of 5 stars Your Oddball Movie Collection Starts Here..........2001-10-24

I can't possibly think of a better resource to get you jump-started on your way to the weird and wacky world of genre movies. The Phantom of the Movies' Videoscope is the definitive guide to anything and everything obscure.

The book is divided into eight major sections, each covering a specific genre of movies. The first is "Inside the Frightfest", a section totally devoted to horror movies ('Night of the Living Dead'). Following this are sections for action ('The Killer'), science fiction ('Invasion of the Body Snatchers'), thrillers ('Blue Velvet'), comedies ('Brazil'), camp classics ('The Brain That Wouldn't Die'), exploitation films ('Beyond the Valley of the Dolls'), and "celluloid delinquents" ('Beat Girl'). Just scan through those titles again... if those films aren't your idea of a good time, you should probably skip this purchase. On the other hand, if you're the kind of person who would watch 'The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eight Dimension' more than once (willingly), then you've found your book!

The films are organized alphabetically according to their specific genre. For instance, all the horror films are listed alphabetically first, then the action films and so on. Therefore, unless you know what kind of genre the film is classified under, you'll have to consult the Index. You'll probably end up having to search through the Index anyway, since many multi-genre films can be classified either way (i.e. 'Basket Case' is classified as a comedy).

The reviews of the films are ranked on a scale of one to four stars. It's important to note that some films that are normally regarded as "trash" are seen here as masterpieces. As with any book on this subject, the first review you should turn to is 'Plan 9 From Outer Space'. Ed Wood's most famous outing is almost universally acknowledged as the worst film ever made. Here, it gets the four star treatment, being hailed as "the most enriching, entertaining bad movie ever made"!

"The Plan 9 Test" is usually a good indicator to how well the book covers this kind of subject area. Many film critics look at movies with an emotional detachment, trying to review them in a way that the majority of the population would see them. Videoscope is a film guide that takes a more fan-oriented approach to the practice, reviewing films in the way that the target audience would see them. And although you may not always agree on the reviews (David Lynch's 'Lost Highway' is a film that I would have personally rated four stars), it's refreshing to be reading movie reviews from somebody who's on the same wavelength as you.

5 out of 5 stars A Definitive and Highly Entertaining Resource!.......2000-11-01

This latest edition of the Ultimate Guide continues from the highly successful first edition (no longer in print) in providing the reader with sharp, concise, reviews of every important (and a few not-so important) genre films. The Phantom's unique style and no nonsense approach are refreshing in this era of overblown hyperbole in movie reviews. His rating system is eminently simple and easy to use and while I don't always share his opinions on certain films, I do respect his point of view. The book is well organized with interesting contributions from major people in the genre. Apart from being a terrific resource, the book is entertaining as well. If you like his style, as I do you, should also check out his quarterly magazine- Videoscope - available on newstands everywhere - I think.

5 out of 5 stars HOORAY FOR THE PHANTOM!.......2000-10-27

hey, if you want to read a film critic who reviews the masterpieces(john woo's HARD-BOILED), the good, the bad, the ugly(RE-ANIMATOR), the very ugly (like the disgusting I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE; he gave it 2 stars? roger ebert=ZERO!), the sleazy(abel ferrara's putrid MS. 45), the grade-z movies (MANOS! THE HANDS OF FATE + any Ed Wood movie), etc. etc., then The Phantom a.k.a. Joe Kane's VIDEOSCOPE is for you! it is must-read!

4 out of 5 stars VideoScope Rules!.......2000-10-19

New York Daily News columnist Joe Kane has accumulated over fifteen years worth of reviews in his latest book. He examines over 3,000 videos, most of them of the sci-fi, horror, fantasy, action/adventure, martial arts, or lowbrow comedy schools. An admitted B-movie aficionado, Kane does have a good sense of what the seasoned moviegoer will enjoy. Like drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs, Kane forgives bad acting and clichéd dialog if the movie is well paced and offers sufficient stimulation, such as ambitious special effects, copious amounts of grue, or a bevy of undressed beauties. A micro-budgeted indie flick that shows a glimmer of talent or originality will bring raves over a bloat-budgeted, studio regurgitation that wastes the talents of everyone involved. Besides gutsy reviews of everything from Abbott & Costello Go to Mars to Zulu, Kane peppers the book with interviews with such genre favorites as Jackie Chan, Pam Grier, Wes Craven, John Waters, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Clive Barker, Stuart Gordon, José Mojica Marins, Abel Ferrara, Gary Oldman, and even the late Herk Harvey (Carnival of Souls). Kane kindly offers a chapter listing mail-order, specialty, and full-service video suppliers, for those rare and out-of-print tapes, laserdisc, and DVDs (including a list of defunct labels), as well as a section of on-line video sources and entertainment sites. Now that everybody and their second cousin has a video guide book out, most of them covering many of the same titles as Kane`s VideoScope, I guess the best recommendation for buying it over the other guides is that Kane has watched thousands of clunkers that make Glen or Glenda? look like a masterpiece, yet he can still enthusiastically endorse Peter Jackson`s Bad Taste. That`s the sign of someone who hasn`t become jaded or desensitized by forty-plus years of B-movie viewing.

4 out of 5 stars Genre Video Guide Distinguished by Pedigree of Author.......2000-09-29

The Phantom of the Movies has been working the B-movie circuit in the NY Daily News since 1984. An urban Joe Bob Briggs, he was raised on a diet of sci-fi, horror, fantasy, and exploitation flicks from the late '50s, stale popcorn, too-sweet fountain sodas, and single-screen neighborhood bijous and second-run houses. A veteran of the notorious grind-houses of Forty-second Street from its '70s & '80s heyday, the Phantom (a.k.a. Joe Kane) was also once editor-in-chief of the '70s tabloid monster mag THE MONSTER TIMES. With these qualifications, the Phantom brings an experienced eye and a seasoned opinion to reviewing the 3,000 films in this book. There are also some great sidebars and interviews with genre personalities such as Jean-Claude Van Damme and Jose Mojica Marins (a.k.a. Brazil's "Coffin Joe"). For fans of Michael J. Weldon's PSYCHOTRONIC ENCYCLOPEDIA OF FILM and PSYCHOTRONIC VIDEO GUIDE, this book covers a lot of the same ground; but, whereas Weldon always tries to find SOMETHING positive to say about even the WORST clunkers, the Phantom isn't afraid to call a stinker a stinker! Required reading just before going out to rent the latest direct-to-video obscurity.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-05-22

I have voice training from my drama background, so I already had the basics of breathing. This book though, was a step by step guide of exactly how to manage your tongue, throat and body for proper production of the singing voice. I was amazed by a noticeable and instant improvement to my singing voice. Highly recommended for the beginning singer!

2 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, maybe.......2005-11-15

This book is not at all helpful if you already know how to read music and carry a basic tune. It might be helpful to someone who's never tried to read music or sing before, but not me (I have 11 yrs. instrumental music experience). I guess I'm going to have to fork out $$$ for professional lessons!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best book for learning to sing!!.......2002-06-11

This is a wonderful book for all levels of singers, from beginners to advanced! The vocal instruction included in this book is practical and easy to follow. The approach is gentle and holistic. The exercises are simple, fun, and well-explained. I liked that the emphasis is on discovering your own unique voice, not trying to emulate anyone else's. I learned a lot more here than in the voice course I took in college!

There is information on reading music and some physiological information about vocal production that was very interesting and enlightening. The songs are from all sorts of genres, many of them classic folk and pop songs. The performance advice was great, too.

I especially liked the CD with accompaniments to the songs included, and enjoyed singing to it. The enhanced CD /computer part of the disk was great- I could use it on my CD player, or pop it into my computer. I love that on the computer there are options where I can adjust the tempo and pitch to my comfort zone. I am thrilled because I have seen wonderful results and improvements in my singing! I whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about singing!

      2 out of 5 stars Incomplete Package.......2002-02-27

The book has some good pointers...here's the problem, I guess this is supposed to be sold with some audio recordings, which are not included in this version. The book is simply incomplete without them. So don't bother buying this version make sure you get the one that comes with the tapes that are oftem referenced in the text.

      2 out of 5 stars too cursory.......2001-07-26

I felt this book was a too cursory introduction. A few good exercises, but i think this is a topic that just doesn't lend itself to a teach yourself approach. I am giving it 2 stars for a couple of great pieces of advice, but i would advice you to try something else first.

              Book Description

Rook endgames represent approximately half of all endings reached in master games, so, it's vital that chess players thoroughly familiarize themselves with this critical part of endgame study. Improve understanding and play of these most important endings, with these clear, comprehensive explanations.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars concise, informative.......2007-06-13

This is a translation of an older book originally published in Bulgaria, I believe. It has three sections: tactics, strategy, and rook endgames in practice. The last part makes up about half the book and is the justification for buying it.

Flip through the pages, and it looks like Minev is showing the same position over and over. In fact, he shows many similar endgames, emphasizing how subtle differences affect the way they should be played. Most chess players know the Lucena position, but would you know what to do if every piece were moved over one file?

You can't expect a club player to memorize all the positions, but as you go through them, you begin to develop an instinct for how to play. When should I check from behind, and when from the side? What goes on the "long" side of the pawn, my rook or my king? How do things change once the pawn gets to the sixth rank? How about the seventh?

Rook endgames are fairly common, so you should study them fairly early in your chess career. I think this is ideally sutied to those rated, let's say, 1400-1700.

Since its release in 1990, Peter M. Senge's bestselling The Fifth Discipline has converted readers to its innovative business principles of the "learning organization," personal mastery, and systems thinking. Published nearly a decade later, Dance of Change provides a formidable response to businesspeople wondering how to make his programs stick. He outlines potential obstacles (such as initiating transformation, personal fear and anxiety, and measuring the unmeasurable) and proposes ways to turn these obstacles into sources of improvement. Senge--with considerable help from the team who worked on the follow-up development manual, The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook--presents an insider's account of long-term maintenance efforts at General Electric, Harley-Davidson, the U.S. Army, and others who are learning organization, along with experience-based suggestions and exercises for individuals and teams. "We are seeking to understand how people nurture the reinforcing growth processes that naturally enable an organization to evolve and change," Senge explains, "and how they tend to the limiting processes that can impede or stop that growth." --Howard Rothman

              Book Description

Since Peter Senge published his groundbreaking book The Fifth Discipline, he and his associates have frequently been asked by the business community: "How do we go beyond the first steps of corporate change? How do we sustain momentum?" They know that companies and organizations cannot thrive today without learning to adapt their attitudes and practices. But companies that establish change initiatives discover, after initial success, that even the most promising efforts to transform or revitalize organizations—despite interest, resources, and compelling business results—can fail to sustain themselves over time. That's because organizations have complex, well-developed immune systems, aimed at preserving the status quo.

Now, drawing upon new theories about leadership and the long-term success of change initiatives, and based upon twenty-five years
of experience building learning organizations, the authors of The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook show how to accelerate success and avoid the obstacles that can stall momentum. The Dance of Change, written for managers and executives at every level of an organization, reveals how business leaders can work together to anticipate the challenges that profound change will ultimately force the organization to face. Then, in a down-to-earth and compellingly clear format, readers will learn how to build the personal and organizational capabilities needed to meet those challenges.

These challenges are not imposed from the outside; they are the product of assumptions and practices that people take for granted—an inherent, natural part of the processes of change. And they can stop innovation cold, unless managers at all levels learn to anticipate them and recognize the hidden rewards in each challenge, and the potential to spur further growth. Within the frequently encountered challenge of "Not Enough Time," for example—the lack of control over time available for innovation and learning initiatives—lies a valuable opportunity to reframe the way people organize their workplaces.

This book identifies universal challenges that organizations ultimately find themselves confronting, including the challenge of "Fear and Anxiety"; the need to diffuse learning across organizational boundaries; the ways in which assumptions built in to corporate measurement systems can handcuff learning initiatives; and the almost unavoidable misunderstandings between "true believers" and nonbelievers in a company.

Filled with individual and team exercises, in-depth accounts of sustaining learning initiatives by managers and leaders in the field, and well-tested practical advice, The Dance of Change provides an insider's perspective on implementing learning and change initiatives at such corporations as British Petroleum, Chrysler, Dupont, Ford, General Electric, Harley-Davidson, Hewlett-Packard, Mitsubishi Electric, Royal DutchShell, Shell Oil Company, Toyota, the United States Army, and Xerox. It offers crucial advice for line-level managers, executive leaders, internal networkers, educators, and others who are struggling to put change initiatives into practice.

              2 out of 5 stars A Little Exhausted.......2006-04-15

              .

When 'The Dance of Change' was published in '99, Senge's work was already reaching the end of it's relevancy. A brilliant thinker, he's had difficulty sustaining creative thinking since 'The Fifth Discipline'. Not surprising. With such a brilliant, breakthrough book like his 1990 masterpiece, one tends to get trapped by one's own fame. Thus is born The Fifth Discipline Industry.

The Dance of Change contained nothing new in 1999. By 2006 the ideas contained in 'Dance' are so passe for most industry. Many others have built upon Senge's work in far more effective ways and your time is better spent with them. While you can skip 'Dance', 'The Fifth Discipline' still is a must read, especially if you're working on organizational change in education or human services, two industries that remain stubbornly stuck in the 80's.

4 out of 5 stars A good resource- should be used in conjunction with The Fifth Discipline.......2006-03-04

This book is written as a resource book usable in conjunction with co-author Peter Senge's book, the Fifth Discipline. This book explores the challenges to sustaining momentum in a learning organization.

The authors of this book describe the processes that help to reinforce change and those processes that conflict with change, thereby limiting an organization's ability to make change. They begin this by reexamining and reviewing the "five disciplines" of learning from The Fifth Discipline: personal mastery, mental models, shared visions, team learning, and systems thinking.

In order to maintain the momentum for change, they expound on what they identify as the three fundamental reinforcing processes required sustaining real change: enhancing personal results, developing networks of committed people; and improving business results.

The main focus of this book is the ten challenges the authors see as the most likely challenges a company will experience when attempting to sustain change. These challenges are the challenges of:

              1. control over time.
              2. inadequate internal resources
              3. relevance
              4. management clarity and consistency
              5. fear and anxiety
              6. negative assessment of progress
              7. isolation and arrogance
              8. autonomy and power
              9. the inability to transfer knowledge across the organization.
              10. organizational strategy and purpose.

              4 out of 5 stars Ponderous.......2003-07-02

While I enjoyed this work and read it from cover to cover, it did begin to seem like too much of good thing. Some of the organization information seemed dated and some of the people who are offering advice are probably no longer held with such high regard in their former organizations. In any case, I would recommed it to anyone who is doing graduate or post-graduate work in organization and management or just wants some insight into how organizations really work.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to look at change from different lenses.......2003-01-27

This book is touted as a "resource" to the Fifth Discipline, but my view is that it could itself stand on its own steam as a handbook for change management. With articles contributed by a variety of authors, the book looks at the challenges of triggering, initiating, aligning and sustaining change and the various diverse ways to confront and solve those challenges.
The challenges that the book identifies are the challenges of:

Orientation, Generating Profound Change, Not Enough Time, No Help, Not Relevant, Walking the Talk, Fear & Anxiety, Assessment & Measurement, True Believers and Non-believers, Governance, Diffusion, Strategy & Purpose.

The book is choc-a-block with tools, explanation of jargon and
references to other resources. An orientation to Systems Thinking and looking at organizations as complex systems would help in clarifying the book more. Hence it is desirable to read "the fifth discipline" before you read it.
However, the delightful nature of this book ensures that you can flip open any page, read a little bit and keep it back, and feel refreshed and not thirst for more.
For people who look at organizations as communities, as networks and as human systems in addition to just being an economic entity this book will delight and scare.
For others, this book will act as a provoking way to look at change and organizations in search of equilibrium.

              3 out of 5 stars Retread.......2001-10-17

Senge et al have done some wonderful work through time. But like many guru's they begin to sing the chorus of the song again and again with each new title. There are useful things to be found here but if you are looking to stretch your thinking beyond his early works you need to look elsewhere. However, if you are building a library of sound work in the area of change, organizational development and other assorted things then this will prove to be a useful resource. I discounted it simply because I was hoping to find a fresh breeze within.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Long-Term Perspective on Change Management.......2004-09-14

Of the FIFTH DISCIPLINE SERIES books, THE DANCE OF CHANGE is by far the most important for you to understand. THE FIFTH DISCIPLINE and THE FIFTH DISCIPLINE FIELDBOOK are wonderful, valuable books, but they largely avoid the tough question of how to sustain a Learning Organization initiative. Based on lots of experiences in different companies, THE DANCE OF CHANGE is the most realistic, thorough, thoughtful work on achieving large-scale organizational change that has ever been my pleasure to read. I immediately found it helpful in overcoming some of my bad habits (including falling in love with my own jargon rather than using common English). Since I first read the book about 9 months ago, I have found it affecting my consulting practice by causing me to focus more on lasting change, than immediate change. That's an important lesson for everyone. Like THE FIFTH DISCIPLINE FIELDBOOK, THE DANCE OF CHANGE allows you to focus on the areas where you need help the most. The beginning is a wonderful systems-dynamic analysis of how successful change occurs, and how it can be derailed. Like THE FIFTH DISCIPLINE FIELDBOOK, you do not need to read THE DANCE OF CHANGE from front to back. I found myself skipping around, and enjoyed the experience. Even if you do not want to have a Learning Organization, you will find THE DANCE OF CHANGE very valuable for giving you direction on how to achieve permanent, valuable changes. On the subject of achieving the strategy you wish to implement, I strongly urge you to also read THE BALANCED SCORECARD. These books are good complements to each other. For picking up on your most important issues, you will find Peter Drucker's MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY to be invaluable.
