Book Description
What is it about Jaws, Alien, Little Shop of Horrors and Poltergeist that plays on men's fear of women? And what is it that they fear most?
The Monstrous-Feminine examines the role of women in horror films. The author argues that when a woman is constructed as monstrous, it is almost always in conjuction with reproduction and mothering functions. In this exploration, using detailed analysis of Carrie, The Exorcist, Psycho and Alien among others, Creed identifies the seven faces of female monstrosity--archaic mother; monstrous womb; vampire; witch; possessed monster; deadly femme castratrice and castrating mother.
The argument then moves on to challenge the Freudian concept that a woman terrifies because she is castrated--Creed holds forth that the woman acting as castrator is what creates horror for men.
The
Monstrous-Feminine goes on to discuss and analyze what these images mean for feminist film theory, as well as revealing important clues about masculinity.

And this is important because..........2004-03-24
Many of the interpretations in this book are indeed interesting, but that's largely it. Using psychoanalysis on horror films can produce fascinating theories on certain types of films and on specific films (Jaws, Carrie, Psycho), sure, but in the end it doesn't prove a thing, and it's a largely isolated fascination. Psychoanalytic film theory has been pretty much called out by post-theorists like David Bordwell who want to see some kind of evidence. Creed's book is over a decade old now, and theorists like Bordwell state the ball is in the court of the psychoanalysts of film to provide a more substantial theory with empirical evidence to back up these theories.
There is probably something to be learned from studying film in conjunction with psychology. As for psychoanalysis, in books like this, one is reminded how much of the work simply wallows in itself. While the insulated core of film 'theorists' sit in universities and philosophize, the subject has stagnated and has functionally moved nowhere. It's a classic academic construct that succeeds mainly in distinguishing the professors. Given that film is such a broad and popular medium (and to study horror films, no less) it's a shame that some of this work can't be qualified or introduced to 'the masses' who watch these films regularly.
Within film studies, there are many who don't delve into theory, and for good reason. It is largely useless. Even when there are valid points to be made, the work settles into ornate language, as if the only way to express obvious assertions and be taken seriously is to dress it up for the academy. Rarely is any useful evidence offered on how your mind reacts to what you're seeing on the screen and how you put together the references conscioulsy or unconsciously. Too much of the work reeks of elite intellectuallism, a competition to ensure the most impressive terms are invented for unproveable assertions about the beloved medium. To sit around and talk about vaginal representations in Alien and Jaws--not to say there isn't something there if you look at these films closely--with no worry about having to actually prove anything takes a lot of training.
What's most troubling in work like this is the application of constructs like Lacanian psychoanalysis (stemming from seminal Laura Mulvey works) and other debunked theories. The social sciences has a habit of distinguishing works that are based on left-behind theories, something hard sciences simply cannot do seriously. Recommended if you really want to delve into this niche market in the field.
An intriguing look at horror film.......2000-04-04
Those who dislike psychoanalytic interpretations beware! This book is full of them (even one about Little Red Riding Hood!) I don't necessarily agree with them, but I do find them exceptionally fascinating. The readings of Psycho and Carrie are particularly enlightening, as well as that of Jaws (very heavy on the Freudian castration anxiety angle... but now when I watch the film I can't abide by any other interpretation).

Book Description
As a measure of individual and collective identity, music offers both striking metaphors and tangible data for understanding societies in transition—and nowhere is this clearer than in the recent case of the Eastern Bloc. Retuning Culture presents an extraordinary picture of this phenomenon. This pioneering set of studies traces the tumultuous and momentous shifts in the music cultures of Central and Eastern Europe from the first harbingers of change in the 1970s through the revolutionary period of 1989–90 to more recent developments.
During the period of state socialism, both the reinterpretation of the folk music heritage and the domestication of Western forms of music offered ways to resist and redefine imposed identities. With the removal of state control and support, music was free to channel and to shape emerging forms of cultural identity. Stressing both continuity and disjuncture in a period of enormous social and cultural change, this volume focuses on the importance and evolution of traditional and popular musics in peasant communities and urban environments in Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, the former Yugoslavia, Macedonia, and Bulgaria. Written by longtime specialists in the region and considering both religious and secular trends, these essays examine music as a means of expressing diverse aesthetics and ideologies, participating in the formation of national identities, and strengthening ethnic affiliation.
Retuning Culture provides a rich understanding of music’s role at a particular cultural and historical moment. Its broad range of perspectives will attract readers with interests in cultural studies, music, and Central and Eastern Europe.

Customer Reviews:
A useful book.......2004-12-10
In addition to the other reviews, it is also important to note that the positions come from actual games (though you probably guessed that since they are all from the Sicilian) and that they are from recent praxis. This may seem a small point, but taking only from recent ECO lines increases the possibility of seeing similar tactics in your own games. There is less chance of the tactic coming from a busted or unfashionable line.
It also seems unfair to trash Aagaard's work simply because it is "another puzzle book." One doesn't throw away a Stephen King novel because it is just another horror story. Rather you should judge the work on its merit within the genre. It is a well researched and useful tactics book and will increase your tactical ability. Feel free to grab other works like Reinfield and Polgar's puzzle books, but don't overlook this collection, especially if you like to play the Sicilian.
Sicilian Combinations.......2004-07-26
While it is true this book is essentially a book of 500 combinations there are a couple interesting aspects to it that previous reviewers have overlooked.
1) All combinations come from "Sicilian" openings and list ECO in the answers...while for the beginning player this might not matter, it is worthwhile to study patterns and ideas from openings that you play.
2) The problems have been checked to insure there are no ambiguous alternate answers....which is a common problem in chess tactic books...nothing worse than banging your head against a problem where your idea is equally legitimate or better. Lishvits's Test your chess comes to mind....
Aagaard has an enjoyable writing style, and aims to an audience somewhere between Silman and his excellent primers on strategy, and Dvoretsky and his world class books.
Another puzzle book.......2004-07-26
The previous reviewer is correct; the book is merely a collection of combinations problems taken from master play. A plethora of such books already exist, and there is nothing in Aagaard's book to distinguish it from the competition.

A must have book for ANY network marketer.......2007-08-03
Kiyosaki did it a big favor to Network Marketing industry with this book. It is not a "How to" book...but it is a "WHY" book. And, like any people involve in any business (or whatever endevour in life)the most important thing, is the why. The "why" is the motor that impulse you to do anything. And if you want to reach the top of anything, the "why" must be very deep.
The others best sellers books of Kiyosaki, name it Rich Dad Poor Dad and Cash Flow Cuadrant, talk about "Why" you must start a business if you want to be financial independent free, if you want to be in control of your life. Well, in this book he say that the BEST business for reach that state is NETWORK MARKETING.In some place of the book he say that if he would have to start all over again, he start with a NETWORK MARKETING business. What a strong words from a person that reach wealth!!.In the book he explain why is the best option and oportunity to obtain wealth for anyone without money, scholar education, so anybody can be financial independent free with Network Marketing. That is what all network marketer say to his/her prospect, no?, well, say it now, no more and less, that for Robert Kiyosaky. If that is not a powerful prospecting tool, I don't know what would it be.
When you read the book, inmediately, you will feel a burning sensation to speak about your network marketing business to anybody. You will know that you are in the correct way to reach your financial goals and how you can help anybody to reach his/her goals too. At same time, anybody that read it, will known because a MLM business, is a SERIOUS one (prospecting tool.
And If you are a network marketer and feel a need to quit the business, read the book, and you, like "Hulk", will changed your mind completely..that is the power of the "why"
A Great Read to Understand Today's Network Marketing / MLM.......2006-07-14
Robert Kiyosaki does a fantastic job of laying out his rationale behind his high opinion towards today's network marketing / MLM industry and the opportunities it offers to the average people - the possibility of earning money in ways that were once reserved only for gifted artists, inventors, or the wealthy.
I found the book to be very informative and easy to read. I highly recommend it not only to those who are considering a future in the industry, but also for all network marketers who are already pursuing their careers in the industry. Kiyosaki's objective viewpoints and the "hidden values" of a network marketing business he writes about should be instrumental when sharing the opportunity information with prospects.

Business School for the People.......2006-03-16
Like Robert Kiyosaki, I was once very negative of the network marketing industry. But I took a look at the industry after many of my mentors wrote and spoke positively about network marketing. The Business School is a great book for people to get a better understanding of where the economy is heading in the near future. Products and services will be marketed through networks and systems owned by innovative network marketing companies. Everyone will eventually be involved in network marketing either as a business distributor or as a customer. Many of the fortune 500 companies have a network marketing or direct sales division of their company. Read this book with an open mind and create some additional streams of income.

A Great Educational Tool For All MLMers.......2006-01-30
Finally a book by Personal Financial Guru Kiyosaki that puts MLM in it's correct perspective!
MLM is NOT a "Get Rich Quick" business model but rather a "Business School" where the goal is 'Personal Development'. Kiyosaki also goes on to elaborate the eleven "hidden values" of a network marketing business. You can also find more network marketing tips and resources on Kiyosaki's "MLM Forum" in www.richdad.com
I highly recommend this book to all networkers.

When The Rich Talk, Listen & Listen Carefully If You Want A Change.......2007-08-08
This was a surprise reading for me from Robert T. Kiyosaki, I never would have expected it, after knowing how he created his wealth, but I must say that it was very informative and I truely enjoyed reading this book. I Highly recommend this book to anyone that wants change and really wants to Fire The Boss but does not know where to begin.
Making the case for network marketing businesses.......2006-07-03
If you asked the average person on the street what he or she thought of network marketing businesses, you'd hear, "They're scams!" or, "They're pyramid schemes." In "The Business School for People Who Like Helping People," Robert Kiyosaki, a self-made millionaire, defends (reputable, effective) networking marketing businesses. Mind you, Kiyosaki has researched and participated in these business but never made significant money in any of them. This is not a book written by a network marketing giant like Billy Florence or Orrin Woodward. Rather, it's written from a more objective source. Kiyosaki describes the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional training the best network marketing businesses provide to their participants/business owners. He argues, quite convincingly, that good network marketing businesses teach people how to think correctly about wealth and how to become wealthy. Obviously not everyone in such a business becomes wealthy, but Kiyosaki defends the system or the concept, not the success rate of any set of individuals in such a system.
If you are a business owner in a networking marketing business, this book is a must-read. It will give you lots of information and arguments to help you handle objections you'll get in showing your plan or in follow-through meetings. More importantly, it will reinforce your belief in your business which has probably already been attacked or challenged (mostly by folks that know little or nothing about creating wealth.)
If you're a skeptic, the average person that thinks network marketing is a "scam," the book will show you a contrary position from an objective point of view. Is it ever a bad thing to see both sides of an issue?

Good MBA Book - written Jameson Thottam (formerly with Morgan Stanley, IndyMac and Homstore).......2005-09-10
Nice book,
My name is Jameson Thottam and I found this book helpful as an MBA Exec student (currently attending Wharton's Exec MBA and with a focus on finance having worked for firms such as The Loan Page, IndyMac Bank, Homestore), I would give a strong recommendation on this book to those pursuing higher levels of business education. If you are an academic like myself, there are programs that specialize in mathematical programing and simulation software (i.e., Linear programming, Monte Carlo Simulations, CRYSTAL BALL / SEC II / @RISK software packages). An MBA with Wharton in particular, has been incredibly useful to me from everything in managing my personal assets, my work environment and in managing my stock portfolio (if you like market/ stock / techincal / tracking insider trading (i.e., technical analysis)....
Hope you enjoy as much as I have,

This book changed my life!!!!.......2005-08-12
I must say that when I first heard Mr. Kiyosaki saying that network marketing was a perfect business model to use to build wealth in today's time of downsizing and 2nd jobs I thought he was insane! To that point all the schemes I had been pitched were based on manipulating family & friends into buying products noone would really want but the "distributors" trying to recruit others to buy it so they can make a few bucks per person!! After reading this book and seeing the principles he details in picking the RIGHT network marketing business I understood his stance completely. I then researched and began working in the business he said had the best compensation plan he's seen and made over $429 in the first 2 1/2 weeks part time!! That made this skeptic a believer real fast! Can you imagine what you could do with an extra $1000 or so bucks in the first month you started your business?! I'm in profit mode already! You may or may not be interested, but if you want to find out more about the 35 year old network marketing business Mr. Kiyosaki endorsed (...) It may be the 15 minutes that changes your life! It changed mine and so did this book! If you aren't currently financially free, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy!
INFORMATION AGE MUST READ!.......2005-08-04
This is a great read for the information age! The rules have changed, and Kiyosaki helps anyone who reads this understand network marketing. What it is and isn't and gives a balanced look at the positves and negatives. Not being involved in the MLM industry gives him a unique perspective.
GREAT perspective of what Network Marketing is and is not !.......2005-03-22
Robert Kyosaki shares his heart felt opinion on the great distribution system of network marketing. The nice part about his book is that it's an unbias review for people because Kiyosaki himself is not in N.M.
If you're interested in network marketing or starting any business for that matter this is a must read. Learn from one of the masters in teaching business and let him show you why building a network is hat makes you rich.
This book will open you up to a new understanding of business. If you are in N.M. and have not read this what are you waiting for? This book will build up your belief of the industry in a way you may have never thought possible.
This is great reading, just like almost all kiyosaki books. For more info on Network marketing you can visit one of my sites www.obtainfreedom.com
Take care
