Book Description
In the Spring of 1975 the film director Richard Pearce approached Cormac McCarthy with the idea of writing a screenplay. Though already a widely acclaimed novelist, the author of such modern classics as The Orchard Keeper and Child of God, McCarthy had never before written a screenplay. Using nothing more than a few photographs in the footnotes to a 1928 biography of a famous pre-Civil War industrialist as inspiration, the author and Pearce together roamed the mill towns of the South researching their subject. One year later McCarthy finished The Gardener's Son,a taut, riveting drama of impotence, rage, and ultimately violence spanning two generations of mill owners and workers, fathers and sons, during the rise and fall of one of America's most bizarre utopian industrial experiments. Produced as a two-hour film and broadcast on PBS in 1976, The Gardener's Son recieved two Emmy Award nominations and was shown at the Berlin and Edinburgh Film Festivals. This is the first appearance of the film script in book form.
Set in Graniteville, South Carolina, The Gardener's Son is the tale of two families: the Greggs, a wealthy family that owns and operates the local cotton mill, and the McEvoys, a family of mill workers beset by misfortune. The action opens as Robert McEvoy, a young mill worker, is having his leg amputated -- the limb mangled in an accident rumored to have been caused by James Gregg, son of the mill's founder. McEvoy, crippled and isolated, grows into a man with a "troubled heart"; consumed by bitterness and anger, he deserts both his job and his family.
Returning two years later at the news of his mother's terminal illness, Robert McEvoy arrives only to confront the grave diggers preparing her final resting place. His father, the mill's gardener, is now working on the factory line, the gardens forgotten. These proceedings stoke the slow burning rage McEvoy carries within him, a fury that ultimately consumes both the McEvoys and the Greggs.

Not much to say.......2005-08-03
I give it 2.5 but I really didn't think there was much of a story here. If you're an admirer and want to read his works, this is an earlier example. Easy, undemanding read.
An Appetizer.......2000-04-25
I agree with the other reviewer who says that you should read McCarthy's books first; that's a must. I found this screenplay interesting, but a bit disappointing in places. Where I detected McCarthy's voice most was in the stage directions and monologues, and a few bits of the dialogue. The power the sysnopses mention was a bit lost on me; I actually found this work quite cryptic, and was puzzled by the flap copy's assertion that the accident was "rumored to have been caused by James Gregg"--I couldn't find even a hint of that. Maybe I missed it?
In any case, a good little snippet. Now I have to go back to the novels...
Brilliant as expected, but read his other books first.......1998-09-24
Having read everything else by Cormac McCarthy, I turned to _The Gardener's Son_ and was not disappointed. It has often been said but bears repeating that McCarthy is America's greatest living author, and I recommend his novels to anyone who enjoys beautiful writing. But I wouldn't suggest this screenplay unless, like me, you're already addicted to McCarthy and are looking for another "fix". It's a short work, fairly expensive for its brief length, and the plot is so sparse that you really have to be a fan of his style to feel as though you've benefitted from reading it. I hesitate to give less than five stars to anything by Cormac McCarthy, but this screenplay is essentially too little of a great thing to merit the unqualified recommendation that I give to all his other books.
Book Description
Working closely with Muir’s family and with his papers, Wolfe was able to create a full portrait of her subject, not only as America’s firebrand conservationist and founder of the national park system, but also as husband, father, and friend. All readers who have admired Muir’s ruggedly individualistic lifestyle, and those who wish a greater appreciation for the history of environmental preservation in America, will be enthralled and enlightened by this splendid biography.
The story follows Muir from his ancestral home in Scotland, through his early years in the harsh Wisconsin wilderness, to his history-making pilgrimage to California.
This book, originally published in 1945 and based in large part on Wolfe’s personal interviews with people who knew and worked with Muir, is one that could never be written again. It is, and will remain, the standard Muir biography.

Gardening Life
ASIN: 156352192X |
Book Description
A common love of gardening helps May reunite with his estranged father after thirty-nine years.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointment.......2005-12-30
The author certainy had a good idea for the book, ie reconnecting with his estranged father through their common love of gardening, but his execution of the idea really missed the point. He instead chose to mostly write an autobiography in which he made that fatal error common to many autobiographists in assumming that his life minutiae was of the same interest to to others that it was to him. The result is a suprisingly bad book. Given the author's carreer as a journalist, it is really surprising that his book is so unfocused and of such little interest.
A great writer.......2000-08-14
Lee May is an excellent southern author. This is the story of reuniting with his estranged father and their mutual interest in gardening, but also is an account of the social changes during one man's life.
Book Description
Bhutan is a tiny Himalayan Kingdom squeezed between its two giant neighbours - India and China. Its King measures his country's wealth in terms of Gross Domestic Happiness rather than the economic measure of Gross Domestic Product. Where better for a father and son to undertake an expedition? The purpose of the trip was to trek its high mountain passes and to visit remote villages but most importantly to re-discover eachother as individuals.Bhutan would also prove to be a fantastic location in which to see for themselves how other cultures manage to balance the demands of work, family and the environment. Like so many fathers, keeping that balance between family and career can be difficult. This was going to be an opportunity to devote the time together that a hectic business schedule and time out at university ( and beyond) had denied them. In Search of Gross Domestic Happiness is the story of a strong relationship getting stronger as Nigel and Toby go through challenges together that journeys to remote locations inevitably produce.........

My children enjoyed this book for the story and the wonderful drawings. It is also available in French for children studying languages.
A tender-hearted adventure.......2001-06-02
This is a lovely story about a gardener's son who helps bring peace between the sun and the moon, who have been quarreling so much there is no light in the world. It reminds that we should appreciate colors and cooperation. Fa-boo-lous!

White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s
ASIN: 1900924323 |
Book Description
As founder of Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span, Ashley Hutchins is the pivotal figure in the history of folk rock. This book draws on hundreds of hours of interviews with Hutchins and other folk-rock artists and paints a vivid picture of the scene that also produced Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, Nick Drake, John Martyn and Al Stewart.
Customer Reviews:
An important man and time in traditional music.......2004-01-27
I don't understand the one star reviews here - I admit it's been a year or two since I read the book, but I don't remember noticing any editing problems. If they were there, they didn't distract me from the subject.
For anyone interested in the traditional music of the British Isles, I'd recommend this, but especially to anyone interested in any of the fine bands Ashley was an important part of - Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, and the Albion Band. This book gives a good survey of the early evolution of these bands and how Mr. Hutchings and his associates blended traditional music with rock. It offers insight into the meaning of "traditional music", which is always in question in its modern performance.
It also is a good introduction to Ashley's prolific output during that period, for those who only know some of his work. The book discusses the various albums he worked on (their genesis and the music itself) as well as what the bands were performing live.
Hello, is there a copy editor in the house?!.......2003-10-15
I found this book on the shelf of a local bookstore and quickly snatched it up, being a fan of Fairport, Steeleye, Morris On, and all things Brit-Folk. Though the subject is fairly intriguing, it's hard to get to the heart of the matter as the writing is so incredibly muddled and confusing (perhaps they couldn't afford an editor?) that the whole book seems a little nonsensical. In fact, three-quarters of the way through, I would say that this is the most poorly written book I've ever read, which is actually invigorating, as I can point it out on the shelf when guests come over and say, "Oh, and that, that's the most poorly written book of all time."
Lots of fun gossip === needs a better editor.......2002-11-17
As a long-time fan of the Fairport-Steeleye thing, I had looked forward to this book through its many delays. The result was sort of what I expected -- a lot of inside information on the incredible burst of energy that erupted in the English Folk Rock phenomenon of the late 60s and early 70s.
So while I read through this book in an evening I was greatly entertained by all of the authors' insider details of all of this. That was fine.
The real problem here is the terrible job of editing. There were many, many obvious mistakes, typographical errors and annoying repeats of information that had been given just a few paragraphs before. Another few months of editing would have made this a much better book. All in all, however, a fun read.
Customer Reviews:
It was OK.......2003-11-28
This book was OK, and I would give it 3 1/2 stars. It leves out some of the details, and sometimes skips ahead to a different area without telling you how to get ther. I could eventually figure out what they were saying, it just took a little while. I didn't really like the order they put certain things in, and most of the minigame things that you do (like collecting heart pieces) are in the back, unlike some books, where they tell you if there is a heart piece or something. Overall it was OK, but I would wait for one from Versus Books

Best Guide Ever.......2005-03-20
This guide rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You cant play the game without it. I couldnt beat the game but I beat it, with this guides help, in 1 day. If you dont like this guide I dont like you.
Okay..........2004-12-30
You could use this guide and get through the game, but I wouldn't pay more than $10.00 to get it. This book is FULL of typos. The enemy description page is loaded with them. The maps are also confusing. If you can figure out your way from the maps, and you can read them and stuff, I suppose it's worth the money. I would highly suggest looking at it before spending any money on it however.
THE WORST GUIDE EVER!.......2003-05-25
I hated this guide. It is misleading, the maps stink even though the 3-D looks cool. I had to buy another guide. The only good part about this guide was the appendixes. But this guide frustrated and confused me so much I thought this game was impossible to beat! DO NOT BUY THIS GUIDE!
EXELLENT GUIDE!!!.......2003-02-27
This is a pretty good guide. It shows accurate but confusing maps, how to find all of the heart pieces and items. It has a lot of typos though, and is an ok guide for beating the game. I myself haven't beaten the game yet, but I bought it in May 2002! Before I bought this guide I had the game for a couple of months and I didn't even know how to get to the first temple.
But this all changed on March 13, 2003 when I beat this game, All thanks to this strategy guide. I changed my rating from 4 stars to 5, and the title for my review from "pretty good guide" to exellent guide!!!" If you love this great N64 game and want to beat it You really have to get this guide. After I think about it, the maps aren't confusing at all, and there are hardly any typos.
What I think of the strategy guide.......2002-04-01
I think this is a very good help in the game . Befor I got it I didnt know what to do at the deku palice . I was stuke for more than 2 YEARS!! :( . After five weeks of haveing it I was almost at the end!IT REALY HELPED!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Everything's not in order!.......2006-04-22
This is the only Prima book that I have that is unhelpful. The game is already hard. Why couldn't they give more detail and put things in order.
The masks, pieces of heart, ans everything else are not in order the way you're suppose to get them in the game.
Conclusion: The Brady Games guide is much more helpful than this [...].
The Ultimate Majora's Mask Book.......2002-05-22
This is a great strategy guide to buy if you are new to the Zelda world, and decided to buy Majora's Mask. That's me. This book is really great!!!! It tells you how to get the Couples Mask, which is the hardest to get, and a whole MESS of other things.
One thing though: don't use it as a walkthrough, because then you just killed the replay value of Majora's Mask a little. I should know: I did use it as a walkthrough.
Confusing and not well written.......2002-04-04
First off, DO NOT BUY THIS!! This book may help you get the masks, but not only are there mistakes in the book (as to where the fairys are) but the directions are confusing. Buy the official guide from Nintendo. Prima's player guide gives confusing directions and is a pain to decipher, I had to collect all the fairys from one of the temples because the book missed the location of one of the fairys. Using the guide to help me complete the water temple was a pain! It gave confusing directions by telling you to go North or South, East or West, and that is very difficult especially when you are located in a temple. I suggest that you buy the Nintendo guide instead of this. Nintendo gives specific directions (such as leave through the red door, etc) and is detailed with accurate maps and such. Don't buy this guide, it doesn't help you very much, and you may as well try to complete the game without the help of this book at all its so confusing and badly written.
THE BEST GUIDE FOR ZELDA EVER!!!!.......2001-11-29
When i bought this guide i had already finshed the game and found most of the secrets i bought it because i wanted to find out where the last couple of masks were. When i opened the book i was amazed at how detailed it was i got all the masks including the adult mask and i found out where are lot more secrets are... A MUST HAVE FOR ANY ZELDA FAN
Nothing at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-11-25
When I first got this book, I was very disappointed. It made alot of picture errors, where they paste the picture in the wrong place. They made things more complicated than before. I was stuck in Stone Tower for 3 months because I couldn't figure out how to flip it upside down. I have only one word; IT STINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best game ever!.......2006-06-24
We had both the Nintendo and the Prima guide for this game. According to my son, this is the better book if you just want the hints and don't want the guide to spoil the game for you. Also, he said that this guide has better pictures.
A MUST HAVE.......2006-03-07
This book was very very helpful during my journey to save Princess Zelda. It contains a fold-out poster, too. I cannot fully describe all of the information that helped me out during the game! Buy this if you need Zelda help for the N64 or Gamecube version!!

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-06-21
I have bought and read the book. And I can say that this book provides great insights to the reader. I recommend it to everybody who wants to gen involved in international business.
A Good Starting Point.......2007-04-20
I ordered this book knowing absolutely nothing about import/export. This book is great for novices. It does a fine job explaining the many facets of import and export. However, before attempting to start your own import/export business, you will need to do a lot more research. This book attempts to cover a great deal of info in just a few pages. Nelson's book is a great place to start your quest for import/export knowledge.
eeehhh!.......2006-12-22
It has alot of info and facts. But doesn't help you make any decisions. Read: "The Maui CEO" by John Tennant instead.
Good starter book.......2006-11-10
This is a very good starter book for anyone who is thinking about international trade.
Save your money and time.......2006-10-01
This book is a bit dated. There is no use for this book if you want to get into this business on a serious basis. Poor style, poor grammar and very poor content. The author devoted 75 pages on trade agreements such as NAFTA and the EU. You don't need to know the technical details of these agreements. You need to sell, sell and sell. This book is very bad. If you want a primer on the ins and outs buy get Exporting, Importing and Beyond. After that, buy Building an Import/Export Business by Weiss (this book gives you techniques that are absolutely useless but it is important to know this...so you don't do what he advises). You can round it off by buying How Small Business Trades Worldwide by John Wiley Spiers who gives a no-nonesense approach. Back to this book. Carl Nelson really needs to update this book to include E-bay and recommend Frontpage or Dreamweaver to create a Website instead of saying it is "easy" to use HTML. In this business, a website isn't necessary but it may be a good idea to have one if you want to market directly to consumers. Also, consider getting into this business by starting off as a Manufacturers representative (consider William H. Krause book on How to Get Started as a Manufacturer Representative) This book was plain AWFUL.
