The best jazz fake book I've seen.......2003-05-21

I grew up with the original "3 song to a page" fake book, graduated to the original Real Book, the Unreal book, and the "New Real Book" 3 volume set. This one tops them all - complete songs (not just the choruses) with lyrics, and both the original chords and suggested reharmonizations (which I find are often not as good as the composers' original chords).

Just as importantly, this is an incredible colection of songs, including many that I haven't found anywhere else. I've stopped dog-earing the pages of songs I like, as it got to the point where the corner of almost every page was turned down!

I've just ordered the "C" version, after being sold on this book by the "Bb" version, which I stumbled across in a mainstream bookstore, since the "Bb" version puts many songs into key signatures with 4 or 5 sharps or flats - playable, but harder than they have to be.

Not true jazz arrangments and certainly not for pros.......2002-07-19

Although I cannot recommend this book, it is not totally without its merits. It is one of the few "true" fake books that includes the actual introductions to the standards; most fake books on the market contain only the 32-bar body of the song. The handwritten script is also very clean and neat and makes for easy reading. Unfortunately, although the songs included are Jazz Standards, the arrangments are not really jazz arrangments. The arranger has substituted chords in place of the traditionally published chords in an apparent effort to give a jazz flavor. Not only are the chords not really jazz chords (they are harmonically weak and seldom will you encounter a chord with more than a 7th extension) but in many cases are harmonically inferior to the "original" chord. The song selection is also rather pedestrian and most of the songs can be found in other books by the same publisher

Covers some bad openings.......2007-09-20

I really enjoyed reading this book. It covers most queenside openings and gives great insight as to what to do for that particular opening. If you want to play queenside openings get this book.
There are few problems though. It covers a few openings that are not very strong or unsound. For instance, Benko Gambit, Benoni, which isn't blacks best response to d4, Dutch and Torre Attack. All that I mentioned are playable, but they are not the best openings and you are not going to see them that often. I've played thousands of games online and over the board and I have seen the Dutch twice, Torre Attack about 3 times Benoni only when I played it and I've never had someone play the Benko Gambit against me.
Other thing is opening theory is wishy washy. What was playable in 1991 maybe not be played now. So this book is out dated. I am sure the information in this book is usable no matter what but after time GM's turn to different variations. Which makes the opening even more complicated if you want to keep up with the time. The best thing to do is to find openings and variations to that opening that you are comfortable with and play them no matter what the current feeling is about that opening or the variation of that opening.

A Wonderful collection of annotated games by Mednis.......2007-06-25

I just finished working through this book last night. I haven't read through many game collections yet (I have many to go on my list), but this book was pure joy to read. Mednis' annotations and in particular his explanation of each sides plans make this book worth a lot more than Dover charges for it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a game collection that does a good job explaining the moves and plans involved in the games.

This is an excellent book. It shows you the battle plans in the main closed systems and gave you a lot of advice about how to play the middlegame and the endgame.
Maybe the most important subject is the move order in the opening so you'll never be playing what your oponent want to play.

Absolute gem on strategic way of taught.......2004-12-29

Mednis wrote a real joy for every chess player who wants to reasure himself about plans in closed positions. If one dont play d4 as white, he would find a lot of material from the black side of board. In some critical moments author devotes virtually the whole page just to explain a future plans. Fantastic for everyone unsure in kind of way to play transition from opening to middlegame. This is for sure one of the most important books ever written about early middlegame plans after 1.d4 (thanks god, its algebraic notation)

Understanding Chess Move by Move for d4 players........2004-04-20

This book is highly instructional. It covers all the major openings that White faces when starting out with d4 with a minimum of one game per opening line and a maximum of three. It covers the strategies and themes of the openings, along with deeply annotated games move by move showing strategies for both the white and black pieces. It does not overwhelm the reader with tons and tons of variatons but explains each concept in sentences with adequate analysis to back it up. This book was written 10-15 years ago, but the strategies and concepts are still applicable today for these openings. It is good as an instructional book to play through high class master games.

When I started teaching financial planning to US Air Force officers planning on reentering the general economy it was a little known subject and you had to scout up your material from pamphlets, magazines and newspapers with help from stockbrokers.
"Ernst & Young's Personal Financial Planning Guide" published by John Wiley & Sons, which is the same publishing house that publishes the JK Lasser's tax manual puts the information all in one volume.
Of intense interest to us is the chapter on starting your own business, which as authors we are doing in our senior years. The material is geared to the younger generation who are just starting out, but the advice is sound and easy to understand without an extensive background in accounting and economics.
Financial planning is rough at this period in our history, because of the skyrocketing prices of necessary goods and services not used in the consumer price index, hence they are excluded from inflation percentage calculations. Gasoline, medicines and health care are three I can name, off hand, that affect the general population, but fall outside the index. This phenomena is not addressed in the planning guide, but then Congress has not touched it since the Johnson adminstration either. It is not something that winning the lottery will answer for an individual, but it is like trying to hold a large balloon half-full of water in one-hand and keep it round.
"Personal Financial Planning Guide' is the best we have found for a realistic look at all aspects of financial planning. The table of contents and index are outstanding for locating information.

Absolutely one of the best financial planning reference tools around! If your personally planning to restructure your financial life or hire a professional to do it for you, then this book is a must have. It provides a wealth of information as well as an extensive array of guidelines and tips for every area of your life . I especially like that it brings to light concerns of areas you may not be immediately affected by (aging parents) but should be planning for now. Great introduction to personal financial management.......2006-12-27

I use this as a text at a university when we cover personal budgeting and finance issues during one week of class. I have used it since March 2006 in undergrad classes. Required reading includes Chapters 1, 18, and 26 along with pgs. 47-54 (Savings), pgs. 97-99 (Annuity), and pgs. 114-118 (Real Estate). Students read more of the book on their own and say this is a keeper they found to be invaluable!

5th Edition and still strong.......2006-06-10

Now in its 5th Edition this is still a great reference book for anyone wanting to either start on a financial plan or complete their annual review.

Updated with current information it is always a useful reference tool. Many Financial Services Professionals keep a copy handy for a quick check.

Parents would be well advised to share their copy with their children. It will give them good advice on how to start looking after their financial future.

This is a great tool for most of us to have.

I bought this for both sets of parents!.......2001-12-20

There are a lot of retirement books out there, so I went with the one with a recognizable name and I'm glad I did. My parents haven't thought enough about retirement and I wanted to spur them to action. They were pleased to find out that there were many things they could do now, even at this late date, to help them, and they even starting giving me tips on ways I could start planning. So then I gave this book to my husband's parents who are already retired, and they ended up buying it for friends too. There are tons of tips, easy things you can do, worksheets, charts, action lists, tips--even a section on how to overcome adverse events like losing your job and divorce. It is worth the read. You'll learn a lot and be happy you did.
