Book Description
"Brode emerges [as] a worthy proponent of Disney's democratic vision, wielding a powerful argument for Disney as a forerunner of multicultural values in America. The significance of his work cannot be overstated."
Deborah C. Mitchell, Westminster College, author of
Diane Keaton: Artist and Icon and coauthor of
The Makeover in Movies
In his latest iconoclastic work, Douglas Brodethe only academic author/scholar who dares to defend Disney entertainmentargues that "Uncle Walt's" output of films, television shows, theme parks, and spin-off items promoted diversity decades before such a concept gained popular currency in the 1990s. Fully understood,
It's a Small Worldone of the most popular attractions at the Disney theme parksencapsulates Disney's prophetic vision of an appealingly varied world, each race respecting the uniqueness of all the others while simultaneously celebrating a common human core. In this pioneering volume, Brode makes a compelling case that Disney's consistently positive presentation of "difference"whether it be race, gender, sexual orientation, ideology, or spiritualityprovided the key paradigm for an eventual emergence of multiculturalism in our society.
Using examples from dozens of films and TV programs, Brode demonstrates that Disney entertainment has consistently portrayed Native Americans, African Americans, women, gays, individual acceptance of one's sexual orientation, and alternatives to Judeo-Christian religious values in a highly positive light. Assuming a contrarian stance, Brode refutes the overwhelming body of "serious" criticism that dismisses Disney entertainment as racist and sexist. Instead, he reveals through close textual analysis how Disney introduced audiences to such politically correct principles as mainstream feminism. In so doing, Brode challenges the popular perception of Disney fare as a bland diet of programming that people around the world either uncritically deem acceptable for their children or angrily revile as reactionary pabulum for the masses.
Providing a long overdue and thoroughly detailed alternative, Brode makes a highly convincing argument that with an unwavering commitment to racial diversity and sexual difference, coupled with a vast global popularity, Disney entertainment enabled those successive generations of impressionable youth who experienced it to create today's aura of multiculturalism and our politically correct value system.

Multiculturalism and the Mouse is terrible........2007-06-12
This book is terrible and doesn't provide any relevant information on any of the topic it promises to discuss. Filled with many grammatical errors, the book is a series of tangents on ideas that have nothing to do with the book. I regret making the purchase, it was not helpful at all.
A Disappointing Book, A Lovely Idea.......2007-01-05
1 star for the idea. 1 star for a few excellent points. The rest is a mess. And I am so very disappointed as that someone would have done this was such a wonderful thing.
The following review concerns both "The Multicultural Mouse" and Mr. Brode's "From Walt to Woodstock". When I first started "Multicultural", I thought there was great improvement from "Counterculture", but as I read on, it only got worse.
The trouble is, Brode's book (and his follow-up, "The Multicultural Mouse", which I'm just reading) is purely awful, his good intentions and his exhaustive attempt at writing about each and every Disney cartoon and live action film notwithstanding.
His tone is also a problem. It seems like a cocktail hour rant where people keep coming over and he becomes more and more demonstrative - and gone from reality. He tosses off his broad themes that SHOULD be explored, but they demand a more careful and culturally knowledgeable exposition than he can provide. A book like this requires so much more research and care, and he's not up to the task. His work is disappointing, flawed, and sloppy.
His proof that Disney "caused" the counterculture is simply that he has seen various connections to the hippie movements, flower power, antiwar, sexual freedom, women's rights, and drugs within the Disney works. Same for his ideas about the Disney multiculturalism. He's right...but he can't really prove that Disney "caused" anything. He can demonstrate that there were certain themes in the movies that have been ignored. But that's all.
Brode repeatedly says that "impressionable young people" saw these films and then went on from the fifties to grow up to be leftist radicals or multiculturally sensitive. That's as much of a connection as he can make to prove a "cause", and that's hardly proof of anything. We are not what we watch. When he speaks for himself (as he does in "Multicultural Mouse"), he becomes eloquent and the tone changes to a much stronger and more convincing one. But he does this, he claims, reluctantly (in a thoughtful passage about the Big Bad Wolf being a caricature of the Jewish peddler). What the book needs is more of that from himself and from other boomer voices. But there is no quote at all from a radical from the sixties left who says that Disney affected his political thinking and radicalized him.
In fact, one person in "Multicultural" does say this - that Disney changed his life - and it's Hugh Hefner. Who for some reason, Mr. Brode thinks was a countercultural voice. that had something to do with feminism and a positive sexual freedom. Uh huh. Which is another problem - Mr. Brode has a bizarre sense of the counterculture, particularly of feminism. His chapter on that in "Multicultural" had me on the floor laughing and wanting to tear my hair out. (Brode when on about women's long hair being a radical symbol, somehow forgetting that it was men's long hair that caused a gap in the generations back in the day.) Brode's take on the counterculture is so bizarre, and in corresponding themes in Disney films, that I wonder if he's really trying to sabotage his own theme.
He likes to show off, dragging in any quote from Romantic literature, beat poets, or sixties music to prove a point. Well, not prove a point, except in his mind. His description of deconstructive criticism at the beginning of "Counterculture" is instructive, but he uses it to wander all over the cultural universe and thus doesn't make any solid connections. It's a rant. His method is by association not logic.
He is not only silly, he's often downright wrong. I know many Disney films - as well as many TV series from the fifties - and when reading Brode's descriptions, I find errors of fact and of emphasis. Because of that, I feel I can't trust his descriptions of the films I don't know, and this is incredibly frustrating.
For example, in the first pages of "Counterculture" alone, he makes several goofs. He refers to a song of Annette Funicelli's as a rock song. "Lonely Guitar" was not a rock song, it was a ballad Annette sung on an episode of "Zorro", that was written by Jimmy Dodd. In his description of "Parent Trap", he says that Sharon dresses up as Beethoven. In fact, Sharon wore a dress and pearls and started to play Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. In discussing a subplot in "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh", involving an officer, he not only gets facts wrong, he distorts the whole story. And when discussing "Pollyanna", he goes way way out, both in "Counterculture" and "Multicultural." He writes about the minister telling his congregation to leave the church and go out into nature (Brode thinks this is proof of pantheism) and then says that soon they are all dancing under the trees. In "Multicultural", he spends a good deal of type on a very small subplot involving the maid Nancy and her boyfriend, waxing eloquently about sexual freedom and Romeo and Juliet. I have no idea what he's talking about. His description of what happened in "Pollyanna" bears no resemblance to the actual film. And he misses the very things that could enhance his theme.
Such errors go on and on in both books. But what is truly frustrating is that Mr. Brode misses, by a mile or a trillion miles, in his microscopic counterculture by association a go go, the really important and so obvious how could he miss progressive themes in Disney films. If he'd only bothered to watch the movies he describes.
So I encourage everyone to try. Watch Disney films - cartoons, animated fairy tales, nature tales, live action, TV shows, the Mouseketeers - and see what you find. Mr. Disney was a man of his times, and he changed - as did the themes of the culture. Also, that he could entertain children (although he said his works were not for children) , there are themes he would approach differently. Doing this is a work that requires years and a great deal of knowledge about many fields.
Mr. Brode's books have many many silly pages. But there are a few times he makes some very good points and observations. I am glad he wanted to write his books. But, alas. I cannot recommend them to anyone. His defense of Disney may be unique at the moment, but it's far from helpful.

The only game in town.......2007-09-20
Overall, this is a great guide for the price. They cover everything in the game with their walkthrough, as well as the bonus game. I would have been willing to pay for more content though. This guide won't help you get an S rank, you'll have to figure out what stuff to skip in order to do that.
It really helps........2007-07-24
This strategy guide really helps you through the game, especially when you start solving the puzzles. I really like the pictures of the monsters that you defeat in the game also.
RE Code Veronica X Strategy Guide.......2007-05-25
Great book tells you what you need to know without spoiling the game in any major way.
Very good!.......2005-06-24
This is really handy for beginners it covers everything from items to the finishing the game it's great.

Book Description
A desperate search for her missing brother once again pits Claire Redfield against the terrifying bioweapons of the Umbrella Corporation. Her quest leads her to a remote island where a mad genius has unleashed every grotesque creature at his disposal to stop her from interfering with his horrific agenda.
Catapulted to the bottom of the world, Claire is at last reunited with the man she came to find. Chris Redfield has been fighting a one-man war of his own against Umbrella's most terrifying creations...and is now on a collision course with the man who betrayed the S.T.A.R.S. in Raccoon City. A man who should, by all rights, be dead: Captain Albert Wesker.

Super Reader.......2007-08-31
Apparently these are based on the game, which I have never played. A young woman is held captive by a pair of twins who are related to the whole Umbrella thing. They have a very twisted relationship.
She manages to get out, and meets a boy around the area, and they try and escape, dodging monsters.
Elsewhere, the girl's brother, a S.T.A.R.S. member, decides to come looking for her.
The female twin is the carrier of the T-Veronica virus, meaning she can become a superhuman shapeshifter. This is bad news for some.
Enjoyable.......2007-08-13
This book was enjoyable. I was glad that Steve died; he was too annoying in the game and the book reminded me why.
"Code" Is Cryptic.......2005-12-18
Exotic locales are the springboard in this latest entry of S. D. Perry's 'RE' offering. From a South Atlantic island off the coast of South America to bases at the South Pole on the Antartic continent, exotic realms abound. Add to this a secluded mansion inhabited by reclusive twins and haunted by Bandersnatches, this strange brew conjures an unusual concoction of imagary spanning everthing from 'The Thing' to 'Alice's Adventures In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass'. traditional elements of gothic novels are prevelant as well. Yet, through all of this, 'Code: Veronica' often remains cryptic as the many parts to this puzzle lose cohesion and the conclusion having the impression of being forced or rushed. At times, the residents of this 'Resident Evil' almost seem unclear how to stay in character. Though there is a bit of a fumble here, S. D. Perry does a respectable job at providing a readable sixth tale for the 'RE' franchise volumes of books.
one of my favorites.......2005-10-04
This is one of my favorites about the Resident Evil series. Buy this book. It's as good as the game series.
Good story adapt.......2005-09-29
It tells the story well, and adds a human emotion to it that the game did not go into. Though, it seemed to rush at the end

Really good guide for a hard game.......2003-05-21
This guide is real good it walks you through the game, but still doesnt spoil it
No one does it better than Prima.......2002-11-08
This is not the only Prima guide I have. Prima has the best format. I have Prima guides for all the Resident Evils and various other games. I've tried others that are good, but Prima makes the best.
If you have a choice between Prima or another brand, choose Prima.
(Sorry for sounding like a commercial.)
Hmmm good for Jill but does Chris even exist?.......2002-07-26
Whatever this guide is missing I can guarantee BradyGAMES has got it, and whatever this guide has good of Bradygames don't got.
To start the guide is a fairly good lentgh. But it would've been nice to have a seperate walkthrough of Chris as you have to find it out as you read. The items list and such is great! The strategies for defeating enemies are great and they actually tell you how to CONSERVE your ammo unlike the BradyGAMES guide.
The walkthrough however can be very confusing at times, but how much is packed onto one page is incredible. Some of the screens are in the wrong place (but they are EXTREMELY good at explaining what to do you don't need any screens really). But as I mentioned earlier the guide completely leaves out chris. But the maps are beautiful. The guide is so detailed and precise. The sealed secrets sectio is also impressive. But the fact that it spoils the ending made this guide lose a star, but I didn't have to heat to hold it against them since it was in the SEALED SECRETS section.
Puzzle solutions are also brilliant, and they have great suggestions on what to do with certain items. The guide is better than I thought it would be as I was disappointed with some of the others, but the guide is by far the better pick out of the two.
OVERALL:
Positive
+AMAZING MAPS
+VERY GOOD PUZZLE SOLUTIONS
+Actually tells you the difference between game modes
+Very in depth on secrets
+Good weapon strategies
+Is mor focused on conserving ammo
+Tells you how to get all six different endings!
Negative
-Where the hell is Chris? Small call outs to his game but not good enough
-A little bit disorganized but still readable
-Spoils the endings
Careless about Chris.......2002-06-23
Okay, so you just bought the remake of Resident Evil and are looking foward to kicking some zombies' rotting butts. Only one problem: where the heck do you go to get farther into the game? Well, this strategy guide should tell ya...If you're playing as Jill. The people who wrote this startegy guide should be ashamed. They forgot that it's a multiple character game. They show you what to do as if you were playing as Jill. Instead of writing two seperate strategies they just tride to slide some of Chris' here and there. If you want to get through the game as Chris, definately DO NOT buy this strategy guide, go with the other one by Brady Games.
Great Players Guide.......2002-05-14
This players guide is very easy to use, and contains a lot of information on the game. The sealed section is really useful (only I wished they included a picture of the Tyrant somewhere in the book) The poster that is included with it is decent in size (almost regular poster size) and the book is just phenomenal! it's a MUST get if you want a players guide for this game (which too is phenominal, but we won't get into that!) :-P

Not the greatest..........2003-06-14
I actually never needed this guide much. The explanations were a little confusing, and it made me wanna sell my game (which I did). Want my honest opinion? Look for some online guides. It's free and will do better.
one of the best guides prima has to offer.......2003-05-21
This guide is the only guide that I've read that has everything a guide should have. It has an enemy, weapon, item and character index and it doesn't give away the ending of the game. It tells you what herbs to mix and the result of mixing them. It tells you where to find the weapons and their ammo. The maps are also very well done. They tell you where to find herbs, weapons/ammo, and save points. This guide also tells you what attacks the enemies have and it gives you strategies for defeating each monster. The only thing that they didn't have was a map for Evil Claire in the minigame you get to play after you beat the game(can't remember name of minigame).
useful guide.......2002-07-28
I would get this guide if you are stuck on some parts. It has lots of cool information like weapons and items. It also has a sealed secret section. It is a complete stradagy guide
Helpful as far as Walkthroughs go, Terrible Errors though.......2002-07-20
Good Guide with terrible misconceptions about certain things in the game.
The best guide ever.......2002-04-19
In this guide I found my dream book. it has everything I could possibly want, Weapons, enemy list and absolutely NO major plot spoiles!! I would recommend this book to anyone who has the game!!

Somewhat Entertaining...........2003-06-24
Being a fan of comic book art, video games, and zombies, I figured this graphic novel would be a unique treat... but I have mixed feelings. The art in this book is very nice and interesting, especially in the action sequences. It remains faithful to the game, in that the characters randomly find weapons, ammunition, puzzle keys, and herbs... although this adds to the choppy storytelling. Overall, the story is bland and uninteresting, much of it being told through Claire's non-stop self exposition. If you're a huge fan of the game and comic book art, you will probably enjoy this graphic novel. But, if you are looking to be engaged in a great zombie story you should look elsewhere.

Great Book.......2003-07-17
This book gives details to the inside thoughts of the character while being true to the game found on dreamcast and playstation 2...You can understand what the characters are thinking, and what their plans are.

Customer Reviews:
my favorite reference.......2006-07-07
I really like this book. it not only helps answer thing but makes suggestion and gives real world scenerios at end of a chapter. I use it mostly for a reference tool as chapters 1-11 pertain to CR XI report creation part, which is what I need refresh on the most. I do wish there was a good tool book that gave more on crystal syntax if anyone knows please email me, but this book helps get me thinking on the right track.
A Solid Reference - But Poorly Organized.......2006-06-15
This is a solid book and a worthwhile reference. Unfortunately, the content organization is somewhat confusing--and the sheer size of the book makes it fairly difficult to find what you're looking for.
The contents have so many hints and tips that every programmer will learn something. I've been using Crystal Reports for many years, and reading through the book I would frequently learn little tips or timesaving processes.
I might note, however, that several of the examples are specific to certain database platforms or certain report implementation methods. For example, I didn't have easy access to SQL Server while reading the book, so testing out some of the examples was nearly impossible.
Nevertheless, one of the best Crystal Reports XI references available on the market.
Did not answer my question........2005-10-11
I purchased this book with the hope of figuring out how to produce a table of contents. Since database publishing tools are no longer produced I was trying reproduce the effect in Crystal Reports. I have 18 years experience using the Oracle Reporting tools and know how to produce what I need, however Oracle will no longer be supporting it's report toolset. There is an article on the Business Objects knowledge base on how to do this but it is written for SQL Sever and not Oracle. I was hoping that this book would go into this real world situation, it does not. I have also gone to the book's web site and asked for help, but no reply after 2 weeks.
Finally the author implies that including a stored procedure is a matter of selecting the procedure and then providing the parameters, WRONG. For an Oracle stored procedure there much, much more to it than that. The author should research solutions before he puts them in the book. If his solution was for SQL Server then he should be reminded that Oracle holds market share.
Good series book has become better with XI version.......2005-09-24
I have acquired and am using the current version (XI) of the "Using Crystal Reports" series book and I am impressed. I am a seasoned business-savvy IT professional and this book has helped me create useful reports with some of the advanced product features like sub-reports, variables, formula manipulation, parameter passing, advanced formatting, etc.
The author team has evolved the chapters to stay abreast of new features and Business Objects APIs. They have also clearly spent a good deal of time editing this version as the chapters flow together better than the previous versions and the real-world samples are particularly improved (and useful).
The book is not perfect and is lacking detailed coverage of all of the Business Objects Enterprise, Crystal Reports Server or Crystal Reports RDC APIs but the existing coverage is very insightful and I'm not sure I could carry the book if it had many more pages.
