Fantastic reading.......2007-03-16
If you're a fan of Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 like me, you'll enjoy all the references and insight the book gives to the films. D. K. Holm reports on many of the influences that K.B. uses throughout the series and I ended up seeing many of the movies which are listed. Don't expect an overly-sophisticated critique or essay, but rather an easy-reading, fun book that covers one of my favorite films nearly scene-by-scene.
Waste of Money.......2006-01-08
If you're reading this review, you have access to the internet and don't need this book. About 99% of the information in this book can be found on the internet. And the remaining 1% isn't worth the book's price. You're better off surfing Tarantino websites and forums. And if you're a contributor to Tarantino forums, chances are Holm ripped off some of your observations and is trying to sell them back to you.
I was really looking forward to this book and bought it the first day it was released. I was greatly disappointed when I read it. The previous reviewer was right. It's lazy and superficial. And definitely overpriced. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.
LOUSY.......2006-01-08
This is a lousy, lazy book.
It starts out very promising, but doesn't follow through. For a Tarantino beginner, it will shine light on some things, but suffers from a tendency to highlight certain things to death and leaves other things mentioned but not explored.
For a moderate to fanatical follower of Tarantino, the book is a frustrating collection of moments improperly explored.
To embark on something as monumental as a timecode-based analysis of a film, even an "Unofficial" one, an author should be prepared to treat the work consistently, and this text is anything but consistent. It's uneven, and tossed off.
Perfect examples of the book's shortcomings:
1) The musical contribution and collaboration of The Rza is not even given a paragraph of attention.
2) The superficial way he deals with DePalma's influence which is cinematically visible throughout the pics, but only mentioned in passing by the author.
3) The exhaustive-bordering-on-excessive focus on Asian cinema that most readers, State-side and European, likely aren't able to get their hands on for viewing anyway.
4) Although he mentions the Charlie's Angels television series multiple times, he fails to give proper attention to the contemporary films by McG, which Tarantino is a huge fan of. McG even worked for Tarantino and his company. How can this connection be ignored.
The most painful thing about the text is that so many rich and textured scenes are brushed passed and even ignored. Often a scene as complex as the animated history of O-Ren is simply dealt with in terms of what's seen on screen, superficially addressing the reasons why Tarantion animated it, what it adds to the film, why detractors dislike it, the tradition of Japanes anime films, etc.
One could go on and on, but like the author, I'll opt for the quick and easy commentary.
If you love the movie, you need this book........2005-09-08
I finished reading this book in 2 days; I was fascinated by it. For the person such as myself, who is completely obsessed and loves the movie and its characters to the point of insanity, this book is absolutely necessary. For the more lukewarm fan or the person wondering whether or not they actually do like the movie, it's also an enthralling read.
To say the least, this book is overflowing with knowledge. About Kill Bill, Tarantino, the actors, the other people behind the film, the music, the countless earlier film influences. It is a series of spoilers, meant to be a healthy supplement for someone who has already seen the movie (probably numerous times). The author warns us of this in the first few pages. Clearly, this book was an immense undertaking and the product is born of a deep love not only of Kill Bill, but of cinema in general. This wonderful book bespeaks loads of time and infinite patience spent sitting diligently through movies and conducting research. In these ways, the author proves to be not unlike Tarantino himself.
The book is, in fact, what someone like me would want to make had I the boundless patience and time. It is worlds better than the book of pictures and collection of opinions coming seemingly from a fan with too much time on their hands I had sort of anticipated.
Nearly every second, every line of dialogue, every brilliant visual gag and musical cue of this masterpiece movie in two volumes is described and analyzed in these pages. Have the DVD? Find the moments of interest at the specific times given. A thorough knowledge and understanding of the story is offered, from timeline information to details (lists of every `foot fetish' incident, every House of Blue Leaves action), explanations, insights, plausible suggestions and theories, presented in case you haven't thought of them already. Moreover, it gives you inspiration to develop your own further ideas.
My overall impression here is that if every fan of this movie read this book, there would be a dramatic reduction in the number of stupid questions asked online about the film.
Every reference, obscure or not, drawn from another existing movie is outlined and often expounded upon. There's more background information here than you could ever ask for, and you come away with a new and more whole comprehension of Tarantino and his movie. You see where all the pieces come from. What else is here? Images you've never seen, color photos, posters, information on actors (with the exception, I noticed, of Viveca Fox), full credits, an interview with David Carradine, DVD differences, and a bibliography, for some things. I love the book's thorough, take-notice-of-every-single-second and find-out-everything-you-possibly-can approach to analysis. There are connections to things you may never have imagined.
I did notice a number of grammatical errors and missing or misprinted words, but these have no real effect. The book is well-written, with a friendly and personal approach as if he were simply saying to us everything he's uncovered, dug up, and organized for our convenience. After reading, `it all suddenly seems so clear.' Everything from the author's point of view is valid; no more dumb questions, comments, or remarks are necessary. The analysis is right here from a fan who is more or less just like myself.
He includes the best reviews of KB out there--the thoughtful and thought-provoking ones. All the facts & secrets are here, plain and simple, from reliable sources--2 annotated movies, early draft differences, and the possibilities for a future film in the series (animated prequel or sequel, not about killing Bill, obviously, but continuing the story of these characters.)
The only thing I starkly disagree with in the book is one review, included for the sake of allowing a different perspective. It does raise a few good ideas, but seems basically to be a bashing of QT, his filmmaking style, Pulp Fiction, & the last chapter of KB. I may feel that he's utterly wrong, but that shouldn't suggest that I don't respect his expressed opinion and see the merit in having another POV in this book.
So, this book is a treasure trove and must-read for the diehard lover of the movie. The one who loves it above all films and wants to know all they can about it. I can't say it better than reviewer Kim Morgan: `...Dear Lord, Tarantino even uses the music of Zamfir and his pan flute. And it's haltingly emotional. What kind of crazy voodoo is this? ...it's a beautiful, brilliant, bloody valentine." The author seemed to be speaking for me when he said it's the kind of movie you want to see over and over, never stop returning to, and can't help rewatching when you're only trying to look at one small part. Again in the words of Morgan: "..an entity all its own, recognizable, yet wholly refreshing, and by its final scene, touching...these pieces of celluloid can take on a life of their own...that kind of movie love is raised to such an extraordinary degree here that we leave the experience swooning." Indeed.
WORTH WAITING FOR.......2005-03-10
After having first ordered this book last September it finally arrived today and boy it is tops. D.K.Holm has caught the essense of Tarantino and the two Kill Bill films in a very well researched, exciting publication with great illustrations and decisive commentary that only thrills the reader more. His "time frame" analysis of the films is wonderful, insightful, complete and hopefully will settle arguments on where bits of action in the films really originated. This is the last word in what needs to be said about Quentin Tarantino and his films. Don't wait a second longer order it now and enjoy it. It is that good!!!!!

The Book That Began It for Me.......2001-10-15
***Electronic Musical Instruments*** came out in 1984 when I was four-years-old, but I didn't come across it until nine years later. Knowing that it may have been outdated within a year of its publication, I was still fascinated by it. As a lover of rock & pop music and the part that electronics played in it (especially in the mid-80's), I felt this book to be the most informative as to "where the noise came from." In the forward, Herbert Deutsch said that Larry Kettelkamp put all the different elements of electronic music into perspective nicely for those interested in delving into the feild. And, he did. Since I first saw the book in the Washingtonville Middle School, I've explored numerous resources for learning about synthesizers and related devices. I now have the book in my posession, and I still refer to it, dispite my access to Internet and other more detailed books (in addition to meeting Mr. Deutsch). If you're interested in electronic sound and where it came from, and you can find a copy of this book, GET IT!

Customer Reviews:
Very effective presentation.......2006-12-15
Most chess books for beginners are simply awful. It's quite refreshing to see a book like this. High resolution photographs of the board really make a difference. The writing is remarkably clear and free of jargon. Lots of great players unfortunately are ineffective teachers. Not so here. The author has his chess accomplishments, but more important he has taught the game for 30 years. It makes a difference and it shows.
What impressed me most is how far the book will take you. There are the usual basics. Some very effective sections on openings, middlegame, and endgame play, including a section on the five steps to victory that you won't find in any other beginner's book on chess. If you casually compare this volume to the other chess books for novices, you'll quickly agree that this is the way to go.

This is the book to buy.......2007-02-01
When starting an elementary chess club, there were things I needed to learn and be able to teach. I have read alot of chess material, but this book by far had the best step by step outline of chess which was clear and extremely easy to follow. It also has a wonderful index in back which is terrific for easy reference for my club members. I recommend this book for beginners and intermediate players.
An easy book to follow.......2005-12-28
This is an exellent book. It's one of the best beginner's books in chess. I also recommend World Champion's Guide to Chess. Both are excellent, easy to follow and thorough.
...Polgar avoids wordy text and lines of movement.......2005-01-03
"Alpha Teach Yourself Chess in 24 Hours" Zsuzsa Polgar ...et al, [...] ISBN 0 02 864408-5
Rates much above the typical beginner book, because Polgar ILLUSTRATES the point she is making, instead of giving you dull and boring, wordy paragraphs to read. When you see the illustration, you QUICKLY get the point of the lesson.
The author is SUSAN POLGAR, and "Zsuzsa" is the Hungarian form of our "Susan". Susan Polgar gives days and weeks of her personal time through the year, to promote chess. She is one of the most self-sacrificing chess celebrities in the entire world, totally committed to enlarge human experience through chess. She has a heart of gold where chess is concerned.
For example, the weend of 13-14 May 2006, Susan Polgar attended the annual Bert Lerner National Championships for children grades Kindergarten through 6th Grade. Many of the children taking home trophies, had the honor of having Susan Polgar appear on stage with them for photographs. Besides that, Ms. Polgar gave a simultaneous exhibition on Friday the 12th of May.
This book has a nice set of questions at the end of each chapter, with answers in the back. I also like the way Polgar has sample games that have a new diagram for EACH and EVERY MOVE in the sample games, and there are explanations for each and every move.
Chapter Nine must be mentioned, because it covers ENDGAMES. It is so important that all chess players get skills for the Endgames, and Susan gives them here.
This book is THOROUGH, and COMPLETE. I can recommend it to any chess BEGINNER as a "first book" on chess. --Bruce R. Bain, President, Denver Chess Club
Clearly written.......2004-04-28
Very good book for beginners. I especially like all the diagrams, make it easier to understand.
*** An absolutely fantastic book for beginners ***.......2004-01-25
I wanted a nice and easy book to help me teach my students. I tried the dummies / idiots series. No good! This one is simply a class above everything else out there! This book is good for both adults and children! I love it!

use for reference or read cover to cover.......2003-11-20
This book describes practically all the aspects of chess in a concise easy-to-read format. Players at all levels can gain insight in many of the two-page discussions about the ideas and concepts that go into the analysis of a chess game. The format of the two page discussions contain a few paragraphs describing a concept in chess on the first page and a sample of that concept demonstrated on a chess board usually from an actual game played. This book is an easy to comprehend book that improves the way chess book have previously been written (e.g. Reinfeld) with their dry prose and endless brain numbing lists of chess moves. This book is an ideal reference tool to keep on hand to either learn new concepts or refresh your memory.
A BEGINNER'S CLASSIC TUTOR.......2002-10-10
Bill Hartson's "Teach Yourself Chess" has every piece of information any beginner need to know in order to build a solid foundation in the game of chess.
From the opening-game to the middle-game, and then to the end-game, both the offensive and the defensive tactics were explained in concise easy-to-understand manner. You will also learn how to plot strategies while exploiting either your own or your opponent's positional strengths and weaknesses.
This book is a classic tutor. The added glossary and reader's exercises are valuable.
If you like Purdy, you'll love this!.......2002-04-08
Bill Hartston is not only a strong chess player, he's also a smart and erudite writer. This book is a gem, and is perfect for the kinds of players who admire the writings of C.J.S.Purdy for their practical wisdom. This book has that wisdom, and its format makes it easy, and a delight, to use. Hartston positively encourages the reader to dip into it in any order, although it's also designed to be worked through as a course; it's a goldmine of ideas and advice that's also fun browsing.
A True Gem: 75 Mini-Lessons For Just About Any NonMaster.......2000-01-22
A beautiful and highly useful tutorial book that explains in 75 mini-lessons various concepts ranging from tactics to strategy, openings to endgames, calculation to intuitive judgements. Novices and intermediate players are probably best-suited for the book's contents but even stronger (1800+ USCF) players can find interesting concepts and examples to review. I'm 2009 USCF and I admired the book's style and directness: what a fun way to learn chess.
Prefabricated chess intuition - with instructions.......1999-02-05
"Experts know the 'rules' - masters know when to break them" & this book might help you find some of the loopholes! Full of easily absorbed ideas that will help 1400-2200 players avoid superficial play by providing another perspective.
You know about good and bad bishops, but what about bad 'good' bishops & good 'bad' bishops? Rooks belong on open files... but sometimes they belong on closed files, supporting pawn breaks to force the file open . You play PN3 in order to play BN2 ...except sometimes you want to play PN3 and have to play BN2 to cover the resulting weak squares...........
There are around 70 (!) such maxims including the exceptional circumstances where they cannot be applied. Each lesson is about two pages long - easily digested over a tea-break and equally easy to remember. The flip side of this brevity is somewhat patchy coverage, but it's still the best value chess publication since Simple Chess.
Book Description

Book Description
This title is perfect for chess players looking to improve their game. Through Elementary, Advanced, and Master sections, the reader is guided toward an understanding of correct strategy and tactics. Designed to bridge the gap between beginner and master, this book will be enjoyed by anyone who has read Teach Yourself Chess and by anyone else who wants to learn to play better chess.

A BEGINNER'S SELF-HELP.......2003-05-11
For the very beginner, the arrangement of the contents of this book may seem haphazard, but its narratives are smooth-flowing.
Every introductory detail concerning the chess board and the chess pieces were included. The self-help outlook of this book ensured that its pages provided enough directives on how a chess beginner can develop space, coordinate his/her pieces, and plot strategies.
Overall, reading this book is a fine beginning step. Its lectures on how to utilize board space and pieces are commendable. I like the way it introduced popular gambits like 'Giocco Piano' and 'Sicilian Defence', although that it did not offer much on how to deploy and coordinate pawns as a territory conquering force.
Excellent teaching book for the total chess beginner!.......2002-09-30
TEACH YOURSELF CHESS (c.1996) by Bill Hartston, is a great book for the absolute beginner in chess for its ability to answer questions, and in its facility to instill a curiosity to further pursue the game!
The author immediately brought the novice up through the ranks, step-by-step, with simple direct language, which avoided confusion and dispair. From a good description of all the moves of each individual chess piece; to a prudent explanation of the need to know chess notation if you ever plan on improving your game through other books or just to follow a tournament in a newspaper; to an good introduction of the rules; followed with important basic endgames, and elementary tactics; leading up to endgame strategy, strategic planning, then basic opening strategy. Bill Hartston never applied pressure to the beginner to learn more than they should discouraging interest.
The author then did a valuable thing - he included a chapter on illustrative games from Grandmasters in chess and from World Championships. This can only increase an appreciation of the game and to promote a sense of identity and purpose onto the beginner for the pursuit of more chess knowledge.
Still TEACH YOURSELF CHESS was initially a little over my head, and I would recommend SAMURAI CHESS as a primer for its ability to make a comparison with a familiar theme - the martial arts. Only then was I able to draw analogies and absorb basic chess theory with application from Bill Hartstson's work. For example, the chess 'Expert' rating was explained in SAMURAI CHESS to be the equivalent of a Shodan, or, a first degree black belt, which immediately imparted to me a sense of proportion to all the chess ratings and abilities mentioned by Bill Hartstson. (For instance; unless you're a prodigy, it takes 8-10 years of hard work for a black belt in Judo and everything that goes with it, so I assume its the same for chess).
TEACH YOURSELF CHESS is a valuable tool for the autodidatic chess enthusiast which will allow them to apply its knowledge directly to a game of chess; and with its chapter on chess notation and illustrative games, this book allows one to increase their ability in the game. TEACH YOURSELF CHESS by Bill Hartstson is definately a well thought out learning implement for self starters. This is a book to give your son, daughter, young relative, or pal as soon as they show an interest in chess!!
My views on Bill Hartstons very well done chess book.......2001-11-25
I totally agree with the way that Bill Hartston starts off with endgame technique, since this phase is extreamely important. Its like soccer youve brought the ball right into the oppositions penialty area you know youre in a solid pace to shoot, however youre not sure weather to attempt to pass it; or to go straight for the smash. You hesitate, next second the ball gets sweepted away form you.
This is very similar to chess endgames one mistake can turn the game against you. This is why its important to fine tune technique. The same goes with Maths, once you enjoy anything you can make remarkable progress.
I have throughly enjoyed this book, it seemed to have just the right balance of everything. Just in case youre wondering My name is Alexander Singer, Im 14 years old and goto Burnside High School.
Excellent primer for beginners and near-beginners.......2001-03-22
I recommend this text for both total beginners (those who do not even know the rules) as well as those just play against friends and family and want to learn how to beat them with impunity or move up to play club players or computers.
The book has sections on tactics, strategy, endgames, and openings. None of these sections presents more than the beginner needs to know -- for example, the endgame section covers the rook and king vs. king endgame which every good chess player must learn to convert but leaves to later books rarer and more difficult endgames which would hardly do a novice any good.
An excellent feature is the section on illustrative games -- these cover many of the "classic" games in chess history. The authors taste in these seems to run toward the daring and romantic, but that's fine -- a novice can get more out of dashing games than complex positional struggles, and romantic games are fun to play out as well.
One of the best chess books available for amateurs.......2000-12-27
I believe this small but detailed book serves as an excellent introduction to the game of chess. I only knew the basics of the game and had been playing every now and then before starting to read this book. The most important element -in my own subjective opinion- of this book is that it tells you exactly what you need to know at each stage of your preparation and nothing more. It is brief but extremely concise, and illustrative examples and exercises are presented at the end of each chapter.
Chapters are arranged as follows: Rules of the game, Elementary endgames, Elementary tactics, Principles of opening play, Endgame strategy, Strategic planning, Basic opening theory, Illustrative games, and finally, Chess problems, studies & fantasy in chess compositions.
My feeling is that if you go through this book carefully and pay attention to quality, at the end of it you will have definitely gained many important skills. At least this is what I am trying to do at the moment, since I have not finished reading this book. The language used by the author is excellent for beginners and amateurs in general.
My sincere thanks to the author for this excellent piece of work. Fully recommended for all amateurs and beginners.

Governance as Leadership.......2005-09-07
I found this book to be a breath of fresh air. It offers a new way of looking at nonprofit boards, in a relatively short, easy to read manner. There is a wealth of information designed to help nonprofit boards of directors become more effective. Unfortunately, existing approaches have been less than successful with most boards. This book identifies the problem as one of purpose rather than performance.
The book identifies three modes that boards of directors can operate in: the traditional fiduciary mode, the strategic mode and the generative mode. The authors emphasize the importance of encouraging board members to engage in generative thinking. Engaging board members in this way makes their work more meaningful and satisfying, while at the same time benefiting the organization through more creative, committed leadership. It suggests signs to look for to identify opportunities for generative thinking.
Another interesting new concept discussed in the book is considering directors as a form of "working capital". This is further broken down into intellectual capital, reputational capital, political capital and social capital. Again, this new framework for looking at what board members have to offer increases the opportunities for them to make meaningful contributions to the organization.
