Book Description
"Let me tell you a story," each film seems to offer silently as its opening frames hit the screen. But sometimes the film finds a voice--an off-screen narrator--for all or part of the story. From Wuthering Heights and Double Indemnity to Annie Hall and Platoon, voice-over narration has been an integral part of American movies.
Through examples from films such as How Green Was My Valley, All About Eve, The Naked City, and Barry Lyndon, Sarah Kozloff examines and analyzes voice-over narration. She refutes the assumptions that words should only play a minimal role in film, that "showing" is superior to "telling," or that the technique is inescapably authoritarian (the "voice of god"). She questions the common conception that voice-over is a literary technique by tracing its origins in the silent era and by highlighting the influence of radio, documentaries, and television. She explores how first-person or third-person narration really affects a film, in terms of genre conventions, viewer identification, time and nostalgia, subjectivity, and reliability. In conclusion she argues that voice-over increases film's potential for intimacy and sophisticated irony.

Book Description
The one and only COMPLETE wedding music guide and planner is designed to help brides and grooms plan every special musical moment of their wedding. This step-by-step guide advises couples what to do and what NOT to do for all weddings - small and large, formal and informal...for all music budgets - $100 or $10,000...before a band or DJ is hired...and AFTER! World-renowned Emmy Award-winning music expert GLORIA SKLEROV and co-writer BARBARA ROTHSTEIN reveal the secrets of planning magical music for the wedding of your dreams.
They share their unique 3-step method, offering inside information every engaged couple should know about hiring bands and DJs - the key questions to ask AND the right answers to get...detailed information about equipment and combining different instruments for different moods and styles...a contract checklist and an actual music services contract - explained in everyday language that gives brides and grooms the knowledge and guidance they need for negotiating with bandleaders and DJs like a pro...extensive listings of the best, most popular and traditional wedding songs - broken down into categories for each and every part of the wedding - from the prelude to the last dance, from ethnic music to different musical styles for all ages - as well as advice about selecting music, 'choreographing' events and writing scripts to announce special moments...PLUS sample music programs, helpful time-saving recommendations for some of the best music and wedding web sites, planning tips, additional workbook pages including pages for personal "Notes & Reminders" and budget planning, and much, much more. Among some of the tips offered in the book are:
The most important part of wedding music planning takes place AFTER the band or DJ is hired. If a couple's participation is limited to choosing a few favorite songs and artists, they are leaving the most emotional part of their wedding to chance - to people they hardly know. Music expresses the feelings they can't put into words, so great care must be taken in selecting the right music for the right moment.
Do some sleuthing. Find out which special songs were played at the weddings of family and friends for their First Dance, and then play those songs at various times during your reception. This never fails to bring your loved ones to the dance floor as they relive the emotions of their own weddings.
A wedding is even more beautiful when thoughtfulness and care are extended to others through your musical selections. Not everyone is a part of a couple. Single, widowed and divorced guests appreciate group dances that allow them to participate. It's also important to consider the elderly for whom even slightly loud music can be uncomfortable. Make sure they are seated away from the speakers.
For the first time, Barbara and Gloria have put this valuable information together in one purse-sized indispensable resource. "How To Set Your Wedding To Music" is the first and only complete wedding music planner and workbook available anywhere. A gold mine of valuable information (valuable even to wedding coordinators and music professionals), it guides couples through a simplified and well-tested music planning process. The book is comprehensive yet concise. It de-mystifies and un-complicates the once overwhelming task of music planning. Every page is easy-to-read, easy-to-understand and easy-to-use with practical and valuable planning tips that highlight important details.
Not only is "How To Set Your Wedding To Music" the one and only comprehensive wedding music guide and planner, it is also available with an exciting new wedding music CD. In addition to the tremendous help and guidance the book provides, the CD is a real advantage when dealing with musicians, DJs, emcees, wedding planners, coordinators, and each other. Even at large formal weddings, CDs have become in-creasingly popular and every band comes equipped and prepared to play couples' favorite artists and recordings. "Set Your Wedding to Music", the CD, may be used for all the special moments at any kind of wedding, including the most lavish. It contains 18 updated productions of familiar wedding standards and new 'traditionals'. Available for the first time anywhere are songs featured in wedding scenes from "The Guiding Light" and "Another World" (including the 1997 Emmy Award-winning song of the year) - the lush instrumental version of Andrea Bocelli's international hit, "Con Te Partiro" (the hot new wedding processional) and many more, all from Grammy and Emmy award-winning professionals.

Made My Wedding Great!.......2002-06-12
If your wedding music is great, then your wedding is great. This book helped us do that. We were able to create this wonderful emotional feeling at our ceremony and a great party at our reception by following their suggestions. Not only was the book full of all kinds of tips and info we didn't know about planning music, but the CD was fabulous as well. We used almost all of it. Some of our guests wanted to know what Cd it was because they all loved the music. There are new versions of some old wedding songs that are really beautiful, like The Wedding Song and Sunrise Sunset. I never heard them done like that before and probably wouldn't have used those songs because they usually sound so old-fashioned. But these were like they had just been done for my wedding. This was the first time I'd seen a music guide for weddings, expecially with a CD and I'm thrilled I found it.
I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I DIDN'T KNOW.......2001-10-17
I thought planning my wedding music on my own would really be easy. I didn't
realize how clueless I was until a friend showed me this book. I read it and
it was awesome! I would have made so many mistakes without it. She had
written on all the worksheets in hers so I got my own and even my DJ was
impressed. The CD was the icing on the cake. We used so many of the songs.
It's the best wedding CD I ever heard. I recommend this set to everyone
planning a wedding.
Don't Plan Your Wedding Without It!.......2001-09-03
I was just about to add my "rave" review when I read the review by "Chicagoland." I can't believe what she said about this CD. Yes, there were a few songs from soap opera wedding scenes. But these are great songs written especially for weddings. One was even an Emmy winner. If you're looking for a song that not everone else will play, you will find it here - beautiful alternatives and yes, my fiance loved them also. The traditional favorites don't sound like all the others - they sound much better- not overblown and sloppy like so many wedding CDs. These were creatively and tastefully done. I'm using many of them. As far as the book, Chicagoland couldn't possibly have read it. There was so much helpful and unexpected advice I've never seen anywhere else. In fact my DJ loved it. He said he's going to give it as a gift to all his new clients so they can be prepared. As far as the author making reccomendations, I appreciated how interested she seemed to be in making my wedding wonderful.I guess there are some people you can never please and Chicagoland must be one of them. I agree with the raves. Both the CD and the book are great!!!
Not at ALL what I expected!.......2001-08-28
I ordered this book based on the rave reviews I read about it here on Amazon. I thought I should write my own opinion so that people looking to buy this have a fair idea of what it is. I purchased this book and CD hoping to get a collection of all the wedding songs I'd like played at my wedding - what no one mentions is that the songs on the CD do NOT sound anything like the originals. Not only that, but the author has penned some of her own songs that are really quite corny and not even musically pleasing, in my opinion. I think a wedding song should be special to the bride and groom - not to some unknown author. I guess if you're a soap opera fan, the inclusion of some love/wedding songs from a few soaps will be a bonus for you - for me, it was wasted space. Even if you're a big soap fan and love one of these songs, I'll bet your fiance isn't - and won't appreciate these not-hot songs being played at his wedding. All in all, I was sorely disappointed in this purchase and regretted it almost immediately after hearing and reading it. The tips in the book are no better than, "Look for a good DJ!" "Pick your own music - it's YOUR day!" Many DJ's not only accept your music, but ASK for your opinion, especially on things like first dance, etc. This is no big secret. Most of the author's recommendations are for "original" songs she's written! How tacky! Brides on a budget: save your money and get your nails done for what this costs. And I say this even though I have a copy that I'm dying to unload (Perfect condition - listened to once, unfortunately!)
For the musically challenged.......2001-06-27
I bought this book (with CD) a year before my daughters wedding.Imagine my surprise when the author herself, Barbara Rothstein, called me and we discussed the planning of weddings and how to use music effectively at the ceremony and reception. The book and CD help you choose music for every aspect of the ceremony and reception ,how to write a music "script" for the D.J or band. This is a great tool for anyone planning a wedding for the first time, and is at a loss how to even begin. The CD that comes with the guide is wonderful to hear and beautifully produced and has traditional and new music to choose from.I highly recommend this package to any Bride or Mom who wants to make a memorable day beautiful. A dream come true - for parents.......1999-01-07
This book is a dream for parents of wedding couples-to-be. With three children marrying within a year, I picked up the book dozens of times to check on the myriad of details that seem to overwhelm even the smartest planners. Super clear and easy to read.
The one book for planning your wedding.......1998-07-31
This book covers more about wedding planning than any other book I've read. Since I am independent of my parents, I needed to know what I was going to have to do to have the perfect wedding. This book not only covered the traditional wedding ideals, but also the non-traditional. It also mentioned ways to cut costs without making tremendous sacrifices. The book also includes worksheets throughout to help you in every stage of planning. If you only choose one book for planning your wedding, this should be the one.

Easy How-to.......2007-01-04
This book made planning our wedding ceremony a piece of cake. The suggested readings were easy to copy for friends to read from for our ceremony and the checklist style was great. We wanted a traditional ceremony, but wanted to add some personalization to it and this book spelled out the traditional ceremony very well, so we could find the places we wanted to adjust and present to our priest for his approval.
Customer Reviews:
Great book but not for the timid programmer.......2002-04-17
You need to be an avid programmer to appreciate the way the code is organized into C++ objects. This is an older book and all the examples are in DOS until the last example which is in Windows (fun little game). The 3D engine renders to a block of memory so it makes no real difference where the example renders. Unlike books about DirectX or OpenGL, this teaches you the "Under the hood" mechanics of 3D. Keep in mind, DirectX and OpenGL are interfaces and what you are learning is how to talk to DirectX or OpenGL. That doesn't mean you will understand the "Under the hood" mechanics of 3D because there are a lot of math algorithms being used. If you want to understand, or at least try to understand 3D on it's lowest level, you will need to read this book many times over. 3D is just that hard unless your a math wizard. The biggest plus to this book is that you have a full 3D, texture mapping, light shading, 4 point polygon rendering engine to play with. There are no libraries here, it's all in C++ for you to see. I have taken the engine and expanded on it and made a tool for applying textures to polygons and animating the polygon objects for my own projects. That's not to say I completely understand everything in the book because 3D math is that hard. You will gain the most knowledge by trying to use and expand the code for your own use. This is not something you will accomplish over a few week ends. Understand this book, then go to DirectX and/or OpenGL and you will have a far better understanding of 3D and what's really happening. ...
an excelent.......2000-09-09
an excelent book but i need it now .. becuese i dont have it now .. some of my freind's got it and do not return it to me ..
Takes a while, but it's good.......2000-01-31
I bought this book in a fit of ambition. The first reading was slow going, and the theoretical explanations were a bit lacking. However, I bought it nearly a year ago, and I'm still finding it useful. Don't expect miracles from this book - it's an excellent companion when making your own 3d engine, but you're going to have to sweat for it. Excellent for DOS, but the Windows chapter is dire.
Good, but you have to work with it........1999-08-04
Good, but you'd better know C++ and the basis of trigonometry (it's 3D).You can learn 3D programming, but I think you'd better read another book first, like Lamothe's Black Art, if you are a beginner and don't know anything about 3D, before this one. Currently outdated, basically DOS , but interesting. Teach you how to make a 3D-Engine, not a game. I have port the source code to work in DJGPP, v.2.8. for the flat and gouraud demos (Up to chapter 9).
CODE to the chin.......1999-07-21
3D game programming is about concepts and applications rather than code and code. The modules that form part of the engine that half the book is dedicated to seem to come from nowhere, at least if you're reading about 3D game programming for the first time. No-one likes reading code that comes from some mysterious library. Therefore it is not an opening text on 3D game programming. But if you are an experienced programmer, reading lines and lines of code that WAS meant for beginners would seem redundant to me. Maybe computer science lecturers and game debuggers will find it helpful.

A tactical in-the-trenches approach for B2B selling.......2005-04-04
Having worked for IMPAX for over six years, I've had a chance to learn and work around numerous sales training methodologies before and since.
Mark Shonka and Dan Kosch present a detailed step-by-step how to approach for understanding the customer's point of view, getting credit for what you know about them, and leveraging that knowledge to communicate your value in the customer's terms. Many other so-called "sales processes" from sales training companies fall short for several reasons, and this book fills many of those gaps:
1) Many so-called "sales processes" simply present ways of analyzing customer situations (such as Miller Heiman's 'Blue Sheet'). They do not show HOW to accomplish your objectives in an account situation as Kosch and Shonka do.
2) Other "sales processes" (such as Solution Selling or SPIN Selling) get tangled up in complex questioning processes that can be difficult to master in the field. I'm not saying there is no value in them (some of these offer techniques for prospecting or demonstrating that IMPAX does not address). What I'm saying is their complexity makes them somewhat unwieldy to implement by many salespeople so they can be less than totally effective.
3) Finally, many other sales processes from training companies make a dubious assumption: that everything the salesperson does should be calculated to close the deal. I hate it when salespeople do that to me, and you probably do too.
Some environments are more opportunity focused than relationship focused, but certainly building relationships is a critical component of any selling environment. IMPAX provides step-by-step approaches for doing that, so that when qualified opportunities arise you can leverage the relationships you have built. It provides the context in which you can be recognized for the value you truly offer, and close deals based on a wider context and on future value potential, rather than (inadvertently) forcing salespeople into "peddler mode," constantly conniving to close (perhaps when prospects are not yet ready).
4) One of the most valuable things about the IMPAX Process is that while speaking the language of practical tactics salespeople love, Shonka and Kosch are really teaching salespeople a powerful strategy that can be scaled from telesales to Global Account Management to talking to your five year old.
IMPAX may not be the only thing you'll need to make your sales organization more successful, because selling skills are just one of many factors at play. However, as far as selling skills go, especially for complex B2B environments, IMPAX has a lot to offer.

The critical question author Shonka choose not to answer.......2004-03-07
I would give Beyond Selling Value five stars if there were not a *tiny* problem:
In an e-mail to author Mark Shonka I wondered what can one say if the client tells in the research meeting to one of the questions "That's none of your business!"
The research questions are more those a hired management consultant is allowed to ask and not somebody who is just needed to sell some products. How is one supposed to deal with this kind of objection/resistance? What should one say in response?
The response by Shonka was -- silence. Otherwise, of course, it's a great book.
Excellent for Sales and other Professionals.......2003-10-08
This is an excellent and clearly written book intended for the Sales Professional. The authors purposely reiterated certain key concepts that for me was a detractor, but for some one new to the subject they are talking about may not be.
Taking the authors process in components, there is nothing truly new here. What is new is the process they propose? The tieing together of the different elements to develop critical information to determine a business fit between the customer and your organization and presenting that to the key decision maker. Again, nothing technically new, but well presented in a well designed process of gathering data to prepare for research interviews with people in the customer's organization to gain the necessary coaches and insight to prepare a presentation to the decision maker.
Though this process is designed for the sales professional, it is useful for others. How many managers, engineers, accountants, etc, need to propose business solutions, initiatives, or other major projects to senior managers? Many I would suppose. This is an excellent process (with minor adjustments for internal use) for you too. Basically how to present a project top gain the attention and support of a decision maker.
I can not make a personal testamonial to any success using this process at this time, but am planning to.
Beyond Selling Value.......2003-05-23
I have read a lot of sales books and have attended more than my share of sales training seminars. Seldom have I seen content that is clearly written by sales people, for sales people. The anecdotal information brings to life behaviors that are "how to" steps rather than "one should always" general recommendations... real examples rather that philosophies about what should work. This tactical approach sets Beyond Selling Value apart and answers a lot of tough questions where others have failed to go.
