Book Description
Abandoned by her father, struggling through a troubled youth as a biracial child in Cleveland, Ohio, and surviving an abusive relationship, Halle Berry faced extraordinary odds. But no one could have dreamed how far her determination would take her. From a breakout role in Spike Lee's Jungle Fever to her Emmy Award-winning performance in HBO's Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, Halle exhibited a tenacity that would eventually lead to Monster's Ball. The role not only proved to be a personal triumph for the actress originally deemed "too pretty" to play it, but would land the victorious Halle Berry an Oscar® -- making her the first African-American actress in history to receive the honor.
Introducing Halle Berry is the inspiring story of a woman who transformed a personal victory into a historic achievement that would speak to millions -- a Hollywood ending that serves as a sweet beginning to a remarkable new life and career. With new interviews with Halle's friends, directors and high-school class-mates, Introducing Halle Berry is the story of a movie star whose own life would make a thrilling movie.

SAME OLD SAME OLD.......2005-02-21
THIS IS ANOTHER EMPTY ATTEMPT AT A BIOGRAPHY. THE BOOK IS LOADED WITH MANY GENERAL FACTS BUT NOT MUCH DETAIL ABOUT HALLE. IT DOES CONTAIN SOME GOOD STORIES AND FACTS BUT OVERALL JUST READ A MAGAZINE OR A GOSSIP TABLIOD AND YOU WILL FIND THE SAME INFO. IT HAS SOME NICE PHOTOS OF HALLE THRU THE YEARS AND IS NOT A BAD READ BUT NOT A GOOD ONE EITHER.
A story well told, a book worth reading.......2003-03-11
Before reading Introducing Halle Berry all I really knew about her was that she won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2002 and that she is one of the most beautiful actress in Hollywood right now. The book tells her story, from struggling with diabetes to begging Spike Lee for a part as a crackhead in one of his films. Christopher Farley touches upon very interesting topics, not only about Halle, but he also looks at the bigger picture. He touches on black actors in Hollywood, or lack thereof. I am a huge Spike Lee fan and there were very interesting tidbits about Spike which I never knew and I was mezmorized reading about. The book also gives a true account of Hollywood and how Halle Berry really paved her own way. Just because she is so stunning it seems as though she had it easy, but that is simply not true. She is a wonderful person and I really enjoyed reading about her life. The book is a fast read and I feel more knowledgable about Hollywood, Halle, and the history of Hollywood after reading this book. I recommend this book to everyone.

3 1/2 Stars, What a Woman!.......2006-10-20
Halle Maria Berry is one intriguing woman. Her story truly adds credence to the fact that looks aren't everything because her life has been quite a bumpy road, and she is often called the most beautiful woman in the world. Frank Sanello does a good job in telling us Berry's story; he includes very descriptive events and accounts of her life. One flaw of this book was the amount of times he mentioned Berry's beauty. Almost the entire world knows how good-looking Berry is, but he just brings it up one too many times. Put it this way; it's mentioned at least 20 times. Another flaw about the book is that a big Halle Berry fan would probably know most of the information in the book. For example, me. Although I was aware of many of the stories told, I also learned new things about her. Sanello got the vast majority of his infrormation from interviews and magazine articles.
Halle Berry was born in Cleveland, OH to Jerome and Judith Berry. Berry had also been close to her mother, but never truly had a strong union with her father because he began abusing her older sister Heidi and their mother early on. He never abused Halle, but because of his abuse to the other members of her family, she stayed away from him. In this publication, we learn that Halle Berry will do anything to get what she wants for her career. Most of the movies she has been in, she had to beg, and do some very unlikely things to get her roles. For example, for her first movie, "Jungle Fever", director Spike Lee dismissed the idea of Berry being the crackhead. At first Berry begged and begged but Lee remained adament about not giving her the role. But, Berry didn't bathe for 10 days, removed all make-up and visited crack houses to truly get the essence of the life of a crackhead! We also learned about the flack Berry faced for not only starring in "Monster's Ball", but winning the Oscar for it!
Berry's love life has been as difficult as her movie career. Her plethora of failed relatinships are talked about in great detail. One would think that a man would feel fortunate and privledged to have Miss Halle on their arm, and for a period of time they feel that way, but after awhile, the relationship spirals down. Perhaps the most mind-boggling aspect of this is her relationship with singer Eric Benet. There didn't seem to be a major problem in their relationship aside from the fact that he was "Mr. Halle Berry". But, after he married her, he became one of the biggest philanderers you'd ever want to see!
This is an overall interesting read and made me respect Halle Berry even more. This book would be great for someone who would like to know how she got to where she is, and the struggles she faced upon getting there. She has, in a sense, lived a "stormy life".

Book Description
"Red Hot Halle: The Story of an American Best Actress" is revealing! You'll meet Halle's "first love," the boy who caught her eye when she was just 11 and kept her interested for many years to come. It is intriguing! Find out how Halle lived the glamorous life as a teenager, dating a famous older man and traveling to London to compete for the Miss World title. This book is captivating! It shows a Halle Berry who, though wealthy, glamorous and famous, is very much like many other women who have been smacked around by adversity. Halle dealt with unkind lovers, and suffered rejection on a number of occasions. Importantly, Halle's story is inspiring because it tells of her will to learn from her mistakes and keep moving forward.
"Red Hot Halle" is chockfull of information about the history-making actress. It is the "complete" unauthorized biography about the movie star. Through exclusive interviews with Halle's first love, high school friends, boyfriends and colleagues to excerpted interviews throughout Halle's career, her full and controversial life is richly depicted. "Red Hot Halle" includes "the films of Halle Berry" and some two dozen photographs from her high school years to today.

Halle is my favorite actress.......2003-02-09
This book is about my favorite actress, the incredibly talented Halle Berry. She is totally amazing because she doesn't let anything stop her from being number one. This book shows that Ms. Berry is a determined person. She always knew she was going to be successful and look what happened. She became one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. I think the moral of this book is to believe in yourself.

"Red Hot Halle: The Story of an American Best Actress" is fascinating. When the actress delivered her very emotional acceptance speech at the Academy Awards, I was curious about her. I wanted to know where she was from, how she got started and what other movies she had played in. I wanted to know all about her background and what makes her tick. "Red Hot Halle" tells it all. It is a very factual account of Halle Berry's life and it has information about every movie she's ever been in. But it is more than just facts. The book tells Halle Berry's life story in an intriguing way introducing other very colorful characters, some big Hollywood players and some everyday people. The book is fast paced, funny at times, inspiring but yet disturbing as it chronicles the actress's struggles in relationships. "Red Hot Halle" is an excellent read.
First of many readings by Author Kelly Kenyatta.......2003-01-28
After reading the intros of "Red Hot Halle" and "Aaliyah" on Kelly Kenyatta's site, my appetite grew to learn more of the two stars. I was excited when my book order arrived. I tore into the package and started reading Halle until my eyes couldn't stay open any longer because I couldn't stop reading. I'm almost through reading it and I'm enjoying every bit of it. I felt like I was there.............. When I picked the book up the next day to finish reading it, I found out there were only two pages left, but I was yearning for more, more............. I like Kelly Kenyatta's style. Her explanations of the other people in her stories are informative. It brings people like me, who don't know them, up to date and put me/us in a familiar time and a place. I couldn't wait to start reading Aaliyah. I have become a fan of Author Kelly Kenyatta.

Book Description
The 1962 Candidates' Tournament in Curaçao was one of the fiercest chess battles of all time. At the height of the Cold War, eight players contested the right to challenge World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik. The format of the tournament was a gruelling quadruple round-robin. Twenty-eight games were to be played on the tropical island, in a contest that lasted two months. The air trembled with drama and intrigue. One of the favourites, the brilliant Mikhail Tal,was taken to hospital after 21 rounds and had to withdraw. Three other players from the Soviet Union, Keres, Petrosian, and Geller, were making suspiciously short draws when playing each other. The two American players came to blows over the services of the second they were supposed to share. Bella Kortchnoi, whose husband took an early lead in the tournament, was a puppet in the hands of the scheming Rona Petrosian, the wife of the later winner. And one of the favourites was a lanky 19-year-old boy from Brooklyn, Bobby Fischer, who openly accused the Soviets of collusion and was later proven right. In the end, Tigran Petrosian was the winner and went on to become the new World Champion the following year. But such was the impact of Fischer's accusations that this was the last time such a battle was organised. Henceforth the challenger to the highest crown was determined in a series of matches. Curaçao 1962 was the last Candidates' Tournament. In Curaçao 1962, Jan Timman returns to this clash of giants and takes a fresh look at the games. Timman describes the course of the tournament and annotates the most important games (including 16 of Fischer's!) in his usual lucid and instructive style. Curaçao 1962 revives a tradition of great tournament books, such as Alekhine's New York 1927 and Bronstein's Zurich 1953.
Customer Reviews:
Scenes from Mt. Olympus .......2006-06-25
I first read of Curacao in Fischer's My 60 Memorable Games, one of my first chess books, and quickly learned the names of these titans of Chess that Fischer clashed with at other times in his seminal book (one of the best chess books of all time--the old one, not the mistake-ridden revised one). But Timman at last supplies some real light on what was the great Paul Keres' last run for Challenger to the World Champion (2nd place--4 times!), and also about the politics and intrigue that went on that Fischer complained about and later was proven to be for the most part true. Some photographs of the event--a rarity indeed (a young Petrosian, and a young Kortchnoi who's intense glare hasn't changed in a half-century of play) with a human touch about the players, albeit a so short biography of them outside of chess (some complained about the conditions, mostly of the Caribbean heat, not the playing hall). I don't think Timman included all the games (there were many arranged draws) and only a few games are analyzed in great detail (he is spare in using analysis of other players' analyses such as Fischer & Tal & Kortchnoi who did publish selected games from Curacao), but he managed to find critical quotes and notes from the Patriarch and others observing the games and players, brief and insightful as they are. This is not a deep book, but it was entertaining and more revealing about some the greats. These were real people, though to me they are not mere heroes, but the real gods of Caissa's folklore as they fought amongst themselves for the privilege of playing for Zeus's (Botvinnik's) crown. But it left me wanting more: more on the intrigue, more about the players' thoughts, likes & dislikes about each others and their situations (Benko had been stateless as a refugee--a little known fact), and something more of a 'where are they now.' or since (Keres died in 1975, Petrosian in 1984, Geller I thought was one of great innovators in opening theory particularly the Sicilian and was a second for Karpov. Fischer descended into tragedy after becoming World Champion, Tal's health problems plagued him throughout his life--he died in 1994, and Kortchnoi had the career of Odysseus--and presently gives the new generation of Grandmasters 'lessons' on what candidate level play should be.) This is a good historical tract and game collection.
Now if Timman could take on Portoroz, 1958 ... some sequels (pre-quels?) can succeed the first attempt (Spider-Man & Spider-Man II, some argue Godfather II is better than Godfather). Go to it, Jan!
Not Zurich 53, but worth the money paid.......2006-04-22
First and formost I congratulate Jan Timman for his efforts to make a book about tournament which was played 44 years ago (wau!). It must have been a great tournament in that respect!?
Well, possibly or possibly not. We now know about a plot to draw games between themselves involving Petrosian, Geller and Keres. And we know about Tal health issues which forced him to finaly pull out from the tournament, and he was out of form anyway, with just a few very good games. So we can almost exclude half of the games played from serious analysis.
Benko and Filip were slightly below the strenght of the others at the tourney, with occasional brilliances, which are very worth of study. So I must say that, basically, we are left with Fisher and Korchnoi here.
I would personally have a very hard time writing a book in that circumstances.
Since Curacao was played so long time ago, I doubt if not for Timman now and here, that anyone could or would write this kind of book in the future.
I like Timmans commentary on analyzed games, he is at least on paar in this book with his usual analitical skills. I like many fotos in the book too, most of them I didnt saw untill now.
It is a pitty that Timman didnt anotate a single drawn game. I doubt there were no some good fights in there.
To conclude: To be honest, Timman pulled a great job covering the tournament which was not so great by itself. Nevertheless its a worth of looking into some stories and many good games which today constitute a skeleton of modern chess opening theory. Lot of Sicilians, Spanish, English and Reti for fans.
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Inviting Disaster, by technology and history writer James R. Chiles, is an unusual book: it appeals to the macabre desires that keep us riveted to highway accidents, while knowledgeably discoursing on the often preventable mistakes that caused them. At its heart are colorful stories behind more than 50 of the most infamous catastrophes that periodically chilled the advance of the industrial age. There are both those well remembered (the 1986 Challenger explosion, for example) and those now largely forgotten (a 1937 gas explosion at a Texas school that killed 298). But along with lively depictions of these deadly devastations and white-knuckle calamities--the U.S. battleship Maine, Apollo 13, and Three Mile Island among them--Chiles offers an informed analysis of the unfortunate chain of events that brought them about. And by grouping like incidents to show how fatal "system fractures" eventually developed through a combination of human error and mechanical malfunction, he also suggests how we might sidestep such tragedies in the future. In so, doing he fashions these spectacular accounts of failed planes, trains, ships, bridges, dams, factories, and other conveyances and facilities into a cautionary tale about technological progress. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Combining captivating storytelling with eye-opening findings, Inviting Disaster delves inside some of history's worst catastrophes in order to show how increasingly "smart" systems leave us wide open to human tragedy.
Weaving a dramatic narrative that explains how breakdowns in these systems result in such disasters as the chain reaction crash of the Air France Concorde to the meltdown at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station, Chiles vividly demonstrates how the battle between man and machine may be escalating beyond manageable limits -- and why we all have a stake in its outcome.
Included in this edition is a special introduction providing a behind-the-scenes look at the World Trade Center catastrophe. Combining firsthand accounts of employees' escapes with an in-depth look at the structural reasons behind the towers' collapse, Chiles addresses the question, Were the towers "two tall heroes" or structures with a fatal flaw?
Customer Reviews:
If you prefer depth over breadth, you won't like this book. .......2007-04-24
Chiles gives a vivid journalistic account of various accidents and disasters. The writing style is easy and popular -he clearly intends to reach a broad audience. He generally does this job well.
The main weakness of the book is the absence of an overarching framework, or theory if you like, that could help the reader assimilate all this information, structure it, identify some concepts or themes that recur. Or at least explain to the reader why Chiles found this particular selection of accidents so interesting that they deserve mention in his book. Chiles is quite candid about this lack of purpose: "When I began this project some friends asked what anybody could boil out of the huge variety of technological disaster we've seen. I didn't know." (p277).
Therefore, the title's promise of "Lessons [learned?] from the edge of technology" never really materialises. The stories are told well, but the lessons remain fragmented and fuzzy. The book is not particularly useful in actual accident prevention work.
While generally well written, at times, particularly in the second half of the book, Chiles goes an association or two too far. More than once, I was left in a mild state of confusion. Other reviewers have also mentioned this problem.
The book gives a fragmented account of various disasters. If you prefer depth over breadth, you won't like this book. If you are interested in a popular account of various disasters, you may enjoy it.
But why not spend your time better reading truly fantastic books on the subject of learning from [bad] experience. Read Henry Petroski's To engineer is human, Aaron Wildavsky's Searching for safety, Daniel Maurino's Beyond aviation human factors, or some of the books by James Reason, Trevor Kletz or perhaps Scott Sagan. There is plenty to choose from.
Essential reading for modern life.......2006-08-05
This book and Charles Perrow's "Normal Accidents" are required reading. We live in and around complex and dangerous technologies which fail for known reasons. Understanding the lessons Chiles presents will help you understand your world and survive it better, whether you're an engineer or just a potential victim.
Mandatory Reading For Safety Professionals.......2006-07-11
Having read through this book twice in five years and beginning again is a refresher in keeping focused on safety. Anyone that has anything to do with safety should read this book. From a car tire vibrating to red smoke at a nitro plant, you will start thinking differently, logically. Being able to catch a pending disaster and stop it is key to survival. This book teaches us to slow down, don't rush designs, to calm down and think when we are faced when problems that do not make sense. I suggest reading the book, presenting the stories in meetings for discussion. It will increase the safety awareness in you life.
Case after case which will change your mind about errors.......2006-04-29
As I read this book, I was very impressed by the level of detail behind stories that I thought I knew from media. I live in Texas and had heard about the Texas City Explosion since I was a child.
I have used a number of the cases to illustrate problems in my own organization and they have even listened to some. The references are very useful as a further study of problems and how they happen.
In the end, it is people who cause so many of the problems, and remarkably how often simple closed minds lead to disaster.
Important if non-technical.......2006-01-23
"Many of the mishaps we prefer to regard as impossible aren't impossible at all--they just take longer." (pg. 286)
That line of the book sums up the theme for the entire work. Every chapter deals in issues of accidents and near misses with the increasingly complex technology with which we surround ourselves. Eventually, that technology, some of which we trust our lives to, comes crashing down and it is often difficult if not impossible to discover why, how, and if anyone could have prevented the failure.
As a hobby I read technical publications about structural and mechanical failure, and that is what originally attracted me to this book. After reading through it, I can say it is certainly interesting, but it is definitely aimed at the layperson that doesn't know, and probably doesn't want to know, what punching shear and other technical terms mean. Instead of focusing on the mode of failure, Mr. Chiles, investigates the human side of these various disasters and near-misses. This is important because often technical publications will omit or oversimplify human interaction with the failure, which leaves us with nothing more than an "operator error" statement and no other valuable information.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the complex and often obscured issue of human involvement in technological failure. This book is especially for those who have ever wondered just how often does the technology we rely on have "very bad days."
