4 out of 5 stars The best insight on the world of Highlander.......2001-11-15

I have had a chance to read this book. I have enjoyed it tremendously. It is a good insight on the world of Highlander. The pictures are great. The chronology of the episodes let you follow the story as you watch the shows. The characters are well explain. The interviews with the actors of the show are well done and presented, they let you know the person behind the character. All in all I have enjoyed a lot the book and would recommend it to somebody else.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A good guide for fans.......2001-02-28

A book very worth owning for any true Highlander fan. By reading the several good interviews with cast and crew, you can enter into the Highlander world, discovering all the details about its production -- and in the process, also learn how a TV series is put together. It also brings to you dozens of stills and a complete episode guide, which is very useful for those fans who, for instance, keep forgetting what flashback belong to what episode or what is the name of the actor who played that wonderful Immie.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Highlander Reference Guide.......2000-08-29

Maureen's Watcher Guide is a must have for any Highlander-The Series fan. The entire 119 episodes synopsis is perfect for remebering just what happened in which episode. The behind-the-scenes interviews provide fascinating insight.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent in delving into the mystery of behind-the-scenes.......1998-09-11

Though the behind-the-scenes reporting is in-depth and *extremely* informative in respect to special effects, costuming, sword- and fight-choreography, the discussions with the actors and the powers that be (particularly the latter) seem to focus on the last season, and the defense of an episode arc which a number of fans considered to be a violation of the spirit of the show.

Also, key actors from the earlier seasons *were* missing, most notably Alexandra Vandernoot (Tessa Noel) and Philip Akin (Charlie DeSalvo), both of whom played important roles. I would hope to see in the future a *more* complete guide than this one.

1 out of 5 stars A Wast Of Shelf Space.......2007-04-13

I bought this book in hopes it would give insight to what to look for in openings without having to memorize lines and variations. It doesn't do that. The plus is that it has just about every opening you could think of but little insight to them. The minus is just about every game given as examples is wrought with errors. It takes a PhD to decipher the main line to the game and the variations given to that game. I guess I will have to go buy MCO and use this book(Standard Chess Openings) as a footstool. I would give it no stars but that isn't an option.

3 out of 5 stars Huge One Volume Reference Book - Lots of Typos.......2006-10-14

If you own "Modern Chess Openings" and/or "Nunn's Chess Openings" you have a nice one volumne reference book, relatively free of of typos or mistakes in analysis. I would not hesitate to recommend this as an additional book to cross reference for additional analysis. Schiller's book actually has more analysis, but I would not totally trust it, with typos alone being common it puts a question to things. If you are a beginner skip owning a reference book as a first book and consider getting a book more on ideas such as "Understanding the Openings" along with "Winning Chess Traps; Tactics in the Opening" to learn the opening tactics (also recommended for intermediate players too). As said, I would recommend "Standard Chess Openings", only after owning "MCO" and/or "NCO". Opening reference books are usefull for intermediate players on up.

    3 out of 5 stars An "A" for Effort..........2006-06-08

I applaud and respect Mr. Schiller for his devotion and the hard work that he evidently put toward this enormous book and its companion, "Unorthodox Chess Openings." In general, they are both quite well-researched and informative, but there are two major problems with each of them.

First, although there are plenty of interesting variations, I would've liked to have seen a little more personal insight and analysis given.

Second, and more importantly, there are entirely too many mistakes. Each volume has typographical errors, grammatical errors, sequence errors, duplications, omissions, incorrect diagrams, etc. Also, the layout of the sub-variations is a little sloppy (There are a few lines that are actually impossible to follow in this particular format). This is not acceptable in a book of this magnitude.

Overall, an ambitious work, but I think it really needs to be proofread and reedited.

5 out of 5 stars Great commentary on openings.......2002-08-23

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. It has lots of good analysis and illustrative games, but I especially enjoy his commentary on openings. He constantly says whether an opening is used by conservative players, aggeressive players, world champions, etc. He adds helpful editoril comments that are greatly helpful in determining whether I wish to further explore a certain opening. FInally, the book is well-made on excellent papaer and a great binding.

1 out of 5 stars A large thorough book of opening analysis-good for fire wood.......2002-03-01

A large book thoroughly full of errors. Lots of pages, I have to give him that. There are tons of great opening lines, with very little focus on any of them. Beginners might find some use for this book not so much to study, but to see the different opening structures, however I don't see any other purpose for this book other than to roll it up in a log and make fire. It seemed the author didn't write this book with much care, which defeat the purpose of writing a book. For beginners I recommend Winning Chess Openings by Yasser Seirawan. For stronger players, I suggest Nunn's Chess Opening and Modern Chess Opening-14 which cost about the same but are very thorough and written with care. It is much more accurate, though without moves explain in detail, it does give an accurate analysis of the position after each opening line.

Bestselling author Jane Bryant Quinn has revised and updated her classic 1991 primer on finance, Making the Most of Your Money, to prepare readers for the challenging fiscal atmosphere that she sees in the coming century. Written in her familiar, easily understood style, it starts out by helping you determine exactly where you stand on money matters and explaining basic money management techniques. Next, Quinn offers comprehensive discussions about insurance needs, home ownership, college funding, investment planning, and retirement. A useful series of appendices provides additional information on insurance, college, bonds, pensions, and more.

    Book Description

This classic book of solid and practical financial advice has been completely refocused to address new tax laws, new ways of paying for higher education, new forms of health insurance, and the completely new investment climate.

As a financial planning tool, the original Making the Most of Your Money predicted a change in America's priorities—away from an obsession with spending and toward a desire to save and invest. The book also foresaw an environment dominated by falling inflation and interest rates. That call was right on the money.

The new edition sees yet another shift in financial energies -- a fresh round of serious borrowing, as the boomers start sending kids to college; a desire to save for retirement fast; and an obsession with keeping safe the profits that have already been made. Investing is getting more complex, as more financial products and services come to market and as traditional guideposts change. More than ever, investors need a clear path through the undergrowth.

The new Making the Most of Your Money is that path. It presents a new blueprint for twenty-first-century success.

On investing: The markets will surprise you. Serious investors need a better understanding of asset allocation and how to diversify for global gains while minimizing risk. The new edition presents a variety of investment mixes for different purposes. You'll also find a sophisticated guide to picking superior mutual funds.

On paying for college: The entire federal financial-aid program has been overhauled. Much more money is available to middle-class families, making paying for college the art of the possible. This book takes you through all the money sources.

On buying a home: The percentage of Americans owning their own homes is on an upswing. That's because mortgage lenders are rapidly opening their doors to people who couldn't get loans before. They also have the welcome mat out for young first-time buyers. You'll find out here how all these new programs work.

On life and health insurance: Life insurance and tax-deferred annuities are being widely sold as retirement investments. The new edition helps you decide when that's a good idea and when it isn't (hint: it usually isn't). In a greatly expanded section on HMOs, Quinn explains how to evaluate the choices you have and lays out your rights if your insurer lets you down.

On retirement planning: Employees have built up significant assets in 401(k)s and other tax-deferred plans. The self-employed have several deductible options to choose from -- each one just right for a particular situation. An expanded retirement section helps you get the most from any retirement savings plan and forecasts how much you're likely to need in your old age.

On post retirement planning: Given longer life spans, people who think they've retired haven't. A section for those past retirement lays out better investment strategies for making money last.

On the checklists for changes in your life: The checklist chapter—one of the sections of the original edition that was consulted most often—has been expanded to include checklists for starting a home based business, teaching kids about money, unmarried couples, new widows and widowers, and defensive planning for a potential layoff. Quinn has also added to the existing checklists on pre- and post-marital planning, caring for an elderly parent, having a baby, finding day care, and enduring divorce.

On finding a financial adviser: Almost every financial salesperson today claims to be a financial planner—so you'll learn more about how to separate the mutts from the purebreds. But with what you learn here you can be your own financial adviser. No one will ever care as much about your money as you do.

The completely revised and updated Making the Most of Your Money will carry Americans through the millennium-pointing younger workers toward saving the rising incomes they're going to earn, boomers toward the retirement that can be more successful than they think, and retirees toward an investment plan they can be comfortable with. With this edition, you'll be making the most of your money ever.

5 out of 5 stars This book allowed me to achieve financial freedom.......2007-09-14

I bought this book in June 1995 at age 32. I recently purchased another copy (due to someone denying that I lent it to them...?? How could you forget borrowing a 2.5inch thick, 5 pound book?) I want to share with you all what this book did for me. It taught me the importance of setting concrete financial goals and measuring my net worth on a regular basis. I am proud to say that I have in the last 12 years set and then met most of my financial goals. I have excel spreadsheets that track my net worth annually from 1995 (when all of my net worth was the equity of my house) to today (I own my house outright, have 401K's, pre-paid college plans, stocks, and CD's). My net worth has grown by 1,800% in those 12 years. As I have gone thru new chapters of my life (making a will and saving for college once I had children, becoming my mom's guardian, choosing to retire early), I have been able to easily pick and choose the chapters of the book that I once glossed over and re-read them when they apply to a new stage of my life. I was always a motivated person who wanted to live under my means to achieve financial freedom, but this book gave me the roadmap I used. I highly recommend this book for people who want to learn how to manage their money and achieve their goals in life. The peace that financial freedom gives me is priceless. Read this book and live UNDER your financial means and you can have this freedom too.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Advice with Results.......2007-01-29

I purchased the original book years ago and have referred to it many times to build a foundation of financial knowledge. Ms. Quinn's book and her Newsweek column offer solid advice which I have used to build a comfortable retirement account, a college savings fund for my children, a low interest mortgage and an understanding of how it all works.

This book is also a great gift idea for college graduates and newlyweds.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING BOOK !! (and an obvious smear campaign).......2006-11-05

This was one of my first Personal Finance books (the 1991 version) and I bought the 1997 edition as soon as it came out. I wish there was a 2006 edition, I'd buy it immediately!

The book is a comprehensive and well written primer on personal finance and can be used as a reference for years to come. True, this book is 10 years old, but guess what, sensible advice about saving and investing doesn't go out of date. There are a few updates needed to bring things like college savings plans, and Roth 401k's (new this year) up to date, but overall this is rock solid advice on which to build your financial foundation.

There is an obvious pattern to the negative, overly angry, one star reviews which begin in the fall of 2001 and mostly run through early 2003, all of whom mark the negative reviews as helpful and the positive (real) reviews as unhelpful. It seems as if there were 80-100 of these placed over this time period, by whom I have no idea. There is speculation on that point in other posts.

In short, no one with any sense who had read the book and was writing a serious review would give it one star. It is simply excellent. Do yourself a favor and read it.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and clearly written.......2005-12-04

This is not a faddish, Super Secrets of Getting Rich Quick book. It is a practical guide to not staying poor due to lack of information, and not becoming poor through bad financial judgement.

I have found this book very helpful in doing exactly what the title says - making the most of my money. While I can't say the this book was an easy read, it was worth the effort. I have been successful in avoiding consumer debt, keeping my credit rating healthy, setting up an investment plan, and generally sleeping better at night because I now know where my money is and what it is up to. I have read other financial planning and investment books since this one, and many of them have sound and useful information, as far as they go. None, however, seems as comprehensive and reliable as this one.

Here is my advice for you if you think you need to know more about money, but feel that a book this huge is too intimidating or time-consuming. Do what I did. Start with the chapters that are most relevant to your current situation. Got a problem? Look it up and read the parts that make sense. Then go back again and again, and read some more until you really understand that chapter or section (in my case, it was sentences at first). Eventually, it will become easier, and you can eventually master everything you need from this book by taking it in stages.

    I love this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Consumer Reports rates this the best Money book around.......2005-10-15

Consumer Reports reviewed alot of books methodically with each chapter being read and graded by industry experts. And of all the books they reviewed, this one was the best overall money book, and best insurance advice book. I have used comsumer reports to help me purchase cars, appliances and many other services, etc. And I have not been surprised or dissapointed yet. If you want sound financial advice, this a great book for you.

    1 out of 5 stars review.......2007-09-17

I was very disappointed by this book. In the gift suggestion section many of the gifts suggested giving things that you needed the recipes from one of her other books. It was disappointing not to have access to all of the information referenced in the book. I also think much of the information was fairly common knowledge. I would not recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars No good tips here.......2005-05-27

I purchased "Frugal Families" because I am already a stay-at-home mom and already have a large family, thus I skipped "Miserly Mom." Based on McCoy's references to "Miserly Mom" in this book, I bought the wrong book. I expected some tips on saving money everyday and instead got tips for decorating for the holidays, buying a car, purchasing insurance and electrical appliances. Not what I thouht I was getting and practically useless to me.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2005-01-05

This book has almost no tips on living frugally. If you are serious about saving money, don't bother with this book and go straight for the Complete Tightwad Gazette. That is a much better use of your money!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta read this!.......2003-09-10

I read all of the reviews posted on this page...even the old ones from 1999. I was hesitant to buy the book based on the few bad reviews, but I loved it! The old reviews must be based on an earlier version. This version I bought is very new. It was packed with helpful information, loads of websites, holiday help ideas, pets, kids, etc. It is WELL worth the price.

    5 out of 5 stars Stress-Free Family with Frugality.......2003-05-18

In true miserly fashion, Jonni McCoy makes saving money a trill and an adventure in Frugal Families.

Whereas Mrs. McCoyýs previous books (Miserly Moms and Miserly Meals) have focused on how a mom or a person can save money, Frugal Families is a compilation of how an entire family can get into a lifestyle of frugality. I especially enjoy this, as itýs easy for one person (the mom) to do what she can to pinch pennies; but itýs refreshing to see that life-long learning and behavior is possible with our children. Additionally, Frugal Families offers an extensive resource collection at the end of each chapter, in case you want to look for more information on various topics.

Jonniýs book is a great inspiration to those of us who do not use coupons. It details ways to save money in practically every manner of family living. Need window treatments? No problem! There is an entire chapter devoted to beautifying your house on a budget. Thinking about taking a family vacation? Make sure you read Chapter Six, complete with toll-free phone numbers and hotel alternatives. There is even a chapter on how you should budget your money, and how to work at paying down your financial obligations so that you can live a debt-free (and stress-free) life! But, donýt stop there! Once you learn how to live more frugally, then you need to read the next section on how to save more of your money and how to invest it wisely.

There are many uncertains in life today, especially with job insecurities, economic recessions and the threats facing the international fronts. But, when you are in control of your money ý and you make living frugally a part of your life, you are able to feel in control of your financial well-being. By doing this, your turn the tables on uncertainty and take your money back into your hands. To do this, make sure you take the time to read Frugal Families, itýll give you many options to taking the stress out of your family finances.
