    5 out of 5 stars A Treasure.......2004-04-07

    I'm pretty surprised about the few people here who have actually bashed this book. As a big Beatle fan and one who's read tons of books about them, I don't recall any inconsistancy's in this book whatsoever. Though short, this is probably one of the most prized Beatle books in my collection. My only complaint is I wish George Martin would do the same thing he's done here with Sgt. Pepper and write books about the sessions for the White Album, Revolver and Abby Rd. : ) A treasure to own. A book to read and re-read over and over.

    5 out of 5 stars A must read for all music producers.......2001-01-22

    It is a well accepted fact that two of the best produced pop/rock albums to date are Sgt. Peppers and Pet Shop. The reason for owning this album is to gain an inside look into the master mind of one of these most important albums. It may be true that our recording equipment has improved our flexability but nothing can replace a truly great producer and great musicianship. George Martin is one of the truly great hero's of our ART and this book gives us a wonderful look into one of his master pieces. I am a big Beatles fan but this book is really directed to producers rather than The Beatles fan base...and I love it. This book has become very hard to get a hold of but it is a MUST HAVE for the library of every producer.

    4 out of 5 stars You place your bets, you takes your chances.......2000-03-17

    This book isn't perfect. As a previous reviewer has remarked, it's inconsistent with Martin's previous books, not to mention other books that have been written about the Beatles. Still, it provides a contrasting point of view, and as such is worth looking over. Nobody's perfect, and Martin admits in so many words that his memory isn't ironclad. Just don't bet the ranch on what Martin has to say.

    2 out of 5 stars Read "All You Need Is [ouch!] Ears" instead........1999-10-14

    There is very little here that isn't also in George Martin's earlier and much superior (and ungrammatically entitled, alas) "All You Need is Ears". The stories retold are altered, seemingly to jibe with Paul McCartney's relentless post-Lennon rewriting of Beatle history. Veracity aside, this tends to make them banal and humorless.

    Recommended: PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.

    1 out of 5 stars crudely written, redundant, and of questionable authenticity.......1999-10-11

    It's amazing to think the author needed the services of a ghostwriter to write this badly. You'd think a reasonably intelligent twelve-year-old could have accomplished it by himself. Those who "[assume] the TRUTH [sic] will be 'good enough' [sic] entertainment for any sensible reader" may appreciate the Andy Warhol documentary in which the exterior of a building is filmed for twenty-four hours (the film lasts twenty-four hours). The art of the memoir is knowing what to leave out. McCartney's habitual trick is to damn John Lennon with faint praise. He loves to tell (and retell and retell again) how John Lennon contributed to his "It's Getting Better" the line "It can't get no worse", while completely ignoring the sophisticated and innovative harmony of "Julia" and "Because", etc. Rather a coincidence then that George Martin treats us to here to yet another rehearsal of this insipid story. (John Lennon was murdered December 1980. Interviews with John Lennon appeared in the December issues of "Playboy" and "Rolling Stone". In neither of these interviews does John Lennon attribute any bit of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" to Paul McCartney. In 1965, on the other hand, the Beatles were still pretending that the attribution "Lennon-McCartney" necessarily implied a collaboration.) I can't help suspecting that in this case "research"--in contradistinction to believing your own eyes and ears--meant letting your book be edited by Paul McCartney's propensity for dissimulation and enormous ego.

    Book Description

    Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) represents the highpoint of the recording career of the Beatles. This is a detailed study of this album, and it demonstrates how serious discussion of popular music can be undertaken without failing either the approach or the music. Dr. Moore considers each song individually, tying his analysis to the recorded performance on disk, rather than the printed music. He focuses on the musical quality of the songs and the interpretations offered by a range of commentators. He also describes the context in which the album was written--both within the career of the group itself and within the development of popular music globally, both before and since.

    5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC BEATLES.......2005-11-22

    If a series of books concerned with serious music embraces the Beatles its the final word.
    Yet its not that surprising when you realise the Beatles were being discussed by classical music critics as far back as 1963.
    A couple of years later we began to find things like The Baroque Beatles and it went on through the years to the interpretations by different Symphony Orchestras.
    Today Paul McCartney is,himself,in the classical catalogues courtesy of things like Liverpool Oratorio and Standing Stone
    In the early 60s classical and pop were a great divide and the Beatles were to narrow it immensley when their music was picked up by orchestras.
    Sgt Pepper is their most famous album and has been treated many times to symphonic interpretations.
    Its now gone full circle as the Beatles are a musical genre

    3 out of 5 stars Good, if a little too technical........1998-12-01

    At the heart of the matter is the question: Is Sgt Pepper a piece of modern classic music? If one were to look at the other books in the Cambridge Music Handbook series (they're all on works of classical composers, [and here I do not refer to the "Classical" period, but to the generic category of classical]), the question seems already answered, and all that remains is to see just how Mr. Moore will prove this. This he does achieve, albeit through much technical information (both musical and socio-cultural), rather than through truly moving and eloquent persusasion. Moore's analysis of each song's music is fascinating (how the Beatles aurally represent concepts) and his thematic analysis is equally good, even if you don't always agree with him (I mean, is "Within You, Without You" really the pivotal song of the album?) But that aside, his commentary on "A Day in the Life" is excellent. Here even the distanced scholar is moved, he writes (paraphrase here) "...the final chords [of the Sgt Pepper reprise] have not yet died away when the strumming of a lone acoustic guitar begin and the innocent listener is lead into one of the most harrowing songs ever written...". All in all, a good effort and worth the reading of every Beatles fan, student of music or pop culture.

                    Some of the best information in this book is the Live Selection tips. They tell you exactly what will happen and which would be a waste of time or not the best choice. I think this is a time saver. Also, it gives nice tips on what you should dump or take with you in certain situations so you're not running back and forth to save rooms wasting time.

                    Also good information on how to fight nemisis and where enemies are lurking so you're prepared when you go in rooms and around corners.

                    The problems I had was the maps which could read the room titles or anything other than jsut D22, D16 or U46. That's pretty confusing when you're on a timer or running from an enemy-- you could get lost and have too backtrack right into them.

                    It doesn't tell you exactly how to solve the puzzles, claiming they change every time the game is loaded. Okay, I buy that, but there were other things also that were unhelpful. For example, with the boss fight nemisis after the trolley accident, it says to keep throwing mine throwers at him to get him to drop the grenade launcher.

                    I played this scene AT LEAST 20 times in a row before I discovered that hitting him in the chest with mine throwers until empty, then hitting him with freeze rounds brought him to his knees. Basically, the book reminds you throughout to master the dodge--which I STILL can't do, and you will be okay. The fight with the grave digger is the same way. It's not about dodging, it's about
                    *speed*. As soon as you turn on the power to the ladder, get over to it and press X and it will ask you "do you want to climb up the ladder?" It's like at this point the games stops to ask the question--stopping the grave digger too.

                    You answer yes, and you go on up, you don't have to deal with the GD anymore because the game never stops in that capacity. I have learned that beating on the controller for the Dodge hasn't really helped me yet. However, this book isn't completly useless. It helped me enough that I could play comfortably without getting stuck or frustrated, and I was able to finish fine. If you can get it used, do it.

                    1 out of 5 stars I honestly can't recomend this guide........2002-01-28

                    This guide was not very helpful to me at all. Almost no detail in the maps, didn't help out with puzzles (thats not too big but it could've explained how to get the solution), some screenshots in the wrong place and some misleading information.

                    First of all, the walkthrough is very dull. It'll tell you how to get to certain areas, but I found several screenshots in the wrong place, and the walkthrought moved very quickly. There wasn't enough detail to tell me what I'm running into. They don't tell you how enemy placements work, or what items could be replaced as.

                    The Quick-Decisions card was nice, but I could've gotten along without it. Also, the guide doesn't tell you what items nemesis drops. While it would tell me sometimes, something was always missing.

                    The puzzle solutions that they claim to be there, aren't really there. They hardly tell you how to get to a solution. For example at one point in the guide when your searching for a password it reads and I quote "Just look around for a while and bingo! (That's not the password)." The problem with this? What am I looking for? I don't know! It just tells me to look around. Every other guide I saw told me EXACTLY what I was looking for at that point in the game.

                    The maps are from the ingame so of course they have no level of detail in them, making the maps useless. The only thing this guide really did state to me were the secrets. However, it didn't cover too much about the rankings or the mini-game.

                    My Advice, VERSUS BOOKS and BradyGAMES made a guide to RE3 and they're much better than this. (The BradyGAMES guide even tells you what's in Jill's diary!) So you might want to looke away from Prima for this guide.

                    1 out of 5 stars This is supposed to HELP!!?????!!.......2001-03-01

                    Hate to have to say this, but I've gotten better help in a game from the opposing pitcher. Not only did it not help, but it was hard to muddle through. Prima should hire good writers even if thy don't intend to put out good guides.

                    I have played through Resident Evil 3 about 40 times now. Itis one of my all time favorite games (along with R.E.2), but it wasn'tuntil I had beaten the game a few times when I got this. I boughtthis guide because I kept on dying against Nemesis and wanted help.Well, then I started finding secret items throughout the game, andpretty soon I became the unstoppable player to the point where Istarted to yell down at Nemesis even before we started to fight.

                    I,before this, never knew how to use red herbs, how to make gunpowder C,or the best weapon arrangements. He also went into detail of maps andscenarios that I may never get myself into. He clearly had allplayers in mind when writing this. I learned the secrets of theseries even after I had gone through this game before and itspredecessor about 25 times. This is the perfect aid for people new tothe series, new to this title, and for the hardcore veterans whothought that they had reached playing perfection (like me).

                    The McKinsey Way, by former McKinsey & Company associate Ethan M. Rasiel, provides a through-the-keyhole perspective on the way this worldwide consulting institution approaches--and solves--the myriad professional problems encountered by its high-powered clientele. His goal, Rasiel writes, is simple: to communicate "new and useful skills to everyone who wants to be more useful in their business." He then does so by explaining the highly structured, fact-based proprietary methodology that McKinseyites are taught to employ with their Fortune 100 clients, complete with details on the entire process from first considering the basic situation at hand through finally selling a solution to the appropriate powers that be.

                    All of the critical steps (assembling a team, managing a hierarchy, doing research, conducting interviews, brainstorming) are broken down into specific actions and fleshed out with applicable examples that Rasiel has gathered through interviews with dozens of other former McKinsey employees. The concluding sections on surviving the mythically grueling pace at the organization, known simply to insiders as "the Firm," are designed to help readers successfully tackle the similar challenges and obstacles they regularly face in their own work environments. --Howard Rothman

                    Book Description

                    "If more business books were as useful, concise, and just plain fun to read as THE MCKINSEY WAY, the business world would be a better place." --Julie Bick, best-selling author of ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW IN BUSINESS I LEARNED AT MICROSOFT.

                    "Enlivened by witty anecdotes, THE MCKINSEY WAY contains valuable lessons on widely diverse topics such as marketing, interviewing, team-building, and brainstorming." --Paul H. Zipkin, Vice-Dean, The Fuqua School of Business

                    It's been called "a breeding ground for gurus." McKinsey & Company is the gold-standard consulting firm whose alumni include titans such as "In Search of Excellence" author Tom Peters, Harvey Golub of American Express, and Japan's Kenichi Ohmae.

                    When Fortune 100 corporations are stymied, it's the "McKinsey-ites" whom they call for help. In THE MCKINSEY WAY, former McKinsey associate Ethan Rasiel lifts the veil to show you how the secretive McKinsey works its magic, and helps you emulate the firm's well-honed practices in problem solving, communication, and management.

                    He shows you how McKinsey-ites think about business problems and how they work at solving them, explaining the way McKinsey approaches every aspect of a task:
                    How McKinsey recruits and molds its elite consultants;
                    How to "sell without selling";
                    How to use facts, not fear them;
                    Techniques to jump-start research and make brainstorming more productive;
                    How to build and keep a team at the top its game;
                    Powerful presentation methods, including the famous waterfall chart, rarely seen outside McKinsey;
                    How to get ultimate "buy-in" to your findings;
                    Survival tips for working in high-pressure organizations.

                    Both a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most admired and secretive companies in the business world and a toolkit of problem-solving techniques without peer, THE MCKINSEY WAY is fascinating reading that empowers every business decision maker to become a better strategic player in any organization.

                    I was expecting much more insight about what it's like to work at McKinsey. For the most part, I thought this book was a waste of time.

                    3 out of 5 stars Basic info.......2007-06-23

                    This is an okay book. It tells you a few tips about how Mckinsey works and the tools they use to get answers. It is simple stuff but you can see why it works. If you were thinking about working at McKinsey this book would be of great help. They work new staff to the bones (80 hr work weeks are the rule) and staff are away from home all the time. The plus of this is you learn an enormous amount about business. It would be like being in the Marines. You can do it when you are young and then it is great when you get out.

                    4 out of 5 stars Good overview........2007-05-14

                    The book gives a good overview on the strategies that are often used at the Firm. But it dont go much futher then the basic concept.

                    5 out of 5 stars Simple but good advice combined with great short stories.......2007-03-25

                    I'm making the transition from contractor (IT field) to consultant and I was looking for books to help me make this change. This book caught my attention and once I started reading I couldn't stop. I started Saturday afternoon and finished Sunday afternoon.

                    The book gives simple yet very good advice. It's probably not advice you couldn't get elsewhere, but the writing style of the author makes it very enjoyable to read and I think even simple messages deserve repeating. I particularly enjoyed the stories from actual experiences at the firm. I found them fascinating.

                    Quite a few people have nitpicked the book with negative reviews. My opinion is that they either don't have a sense of humor (and missed the jokes) or they are probably already above average consultants and therefore weren't the target audience.

                    If you're not an experienced consultant, or if you're an average one, then this book could teach you a few things that make it well worth the price of the book.

                    In summary, if I learned one thing from the book it is this: any problem can be solved with a good approach based on hypothesis, facts, and asking the right questions.

                    As an undergraduate economics major, I've been looking into various business careers for the past few years and have thought about doing everything from investment banking to fashion buying, but it wasn't until I read "The McKinsey Way" that I figured out what career I really wanted. Ethan Rasiel gives you the good and the bad aspects of the consulting industry, as well as numerous tips that everyone can and should use (i.e. make your boss look good, the elevator test, and just say "I don't know", to name a few.) And the book does not need to be read in sequential order; you can jump around to whatever section interests you without any problems. If you are considering a career in any type of consulting, I would definitely recommend you read this book, you'll gain a lot of insights and laugh at the same time. I have gone on to read the book twice, and still plan on reading it again.
