Good Reference Book.......1999-05-01

Mr. Maxford takes the reader through Hammer's history, from their beginnings as Exclusive to their 80's TV work. Contrary to the title, there is very little behind the scenes information. The book is mainly useful as a reference, offering plot details, cast and crew lists, and release information.

If you're looking for praise for Hammer's work, though, you need to look somewhere else. The author is complimentary to about four of Hammer's pictures, and trashes the rest. I have to wonder why he wrote this book; he doesn't seem to be much of a fan.

Although, if you can take his criticisms with a grain of salt, this book is a valuable "encyclopedia."

Bluesify Your Melody - A Must-Have for Cross Harp Players.......2005-11-19

In my opinion, Jon Gindick's "Bluesify Your Melody" is the most important instructional book for intermediate and advanced harmonica players to be published in a number of years.
Many audiences relate more strongly to folk, gospel, patriotic, kids, or holiday songs than they do to blues, but those songs get boring to play in first position. Jon took 99 songs that are well-known to any audience, tabbed them in second position on both high and low ends of the harmonica, and demonstrated how to integrate embellishments and improvisations into the melodies. The "plain Jane" tunes that audiences love are now fun, interesting, and challenging for the musician.
This book is a must-have for any cross harp player who can bend notes, and I highly recommend it to all of my students.

Very inspirational to me and others who keep trying to swipe my copy. This is so well written and organized that I keep reading much of it over and over again. It is one of those books that you savior every word. It is very inexpensive for such a valuable, meaty, entertaining resource. Mr. Field, thank you for this tremendous read. This material would make a great PBS Ken Burns type documentary.

Mr. Field has written a book that no self-respecting harmonica should miss. It gives a comprehensive overview of the harmonica's rich and illustrious history. Very disappointed..........2004-11-10

Bought this book expecting a purely jazz oriented instructional book and was very disappointed. Not only that, I was unhappy with the way the book was written, a lot of fluff and not a lot of meat. Audio quality of the cd was extremely poor, and the tracks were not even numbered. What a pain when you want to hear an example over and over without having to go through the boring narratives!

Excellent book for beginning Harmonica Jazz Players.......2001-01-24

Richard Hunter is an excellent harmonica player and his contributions to the harmonica community are well received. Jazz Harp was published in 1980, it comes complete 6 cuts which are used with practical examples through out the book - BUT, the cuts are on Vinal, so be warned. This book is written for BOTH chromatic & diatonic harmonica.

Richard starts with a light practical primer on Jazz theory, enough to get going, followed by chapters using a number of popular pieces of music over a wide range of 11 Jazz artists & their style - ordered by difficulty, and discusses how to approach them on the harmonica. Each music example is transcribed in music notation and harmonica tab. Each example finishes with additional discographys, so Richard has done his homework. Its a good practical approach to getting up and running with Jazz styles on the harmonica. The last part of the book covers a number of points regarding playing techniques on the harmonica including a quick description of how to "overbend" the diatonic harmonica to get some missing notes. There is an Exercises chapter which can also be used in part as a reference to chords & scales. Its music notation with tab for diatonic harmonica. And at the ending is an interview of Toots Theilsman, arguably the best Chromatic Harp Jazz player to date. Its a nice touch.

I'd recommend purchasing additional good music theory book &jazz theory book for seriously indepth music theory studies. Richard also recommends finding teachers, and asks that you find the tracks given in each chapter so that you can follow his explicit references.

This is a good book, well written and presented. If you are starting to learn Jazz on the harmonica: this is the one.

Not much content in this simplistic book.......2001-10-24

Don't be fooled by the number of pages: this book is extremely lightweight. Given that the book never gets around to actually discussing any real technique, I don't really see why the insipid and repetitive examples have to come before the very few interesting numbers laid out in this book. In other words, I think nothing would be lost in this book if it were condensed into five pages of technique and 15 pages of non-atrociously-boring song/riff ideas. Don't get me wrong, there are a couple of catchy folk tunes ("St. James Infirmary") notated here, and about three pages of allegedly "Stevie-Wonder-like" and "Toots-Thielemans-like" riffs in the back. There's just not much else.

If you are an absolute beginner, you may have more patience for Harp's approach than I had, but I have to believe there's a better book out there for the chromatic harmonica learner.* If you have ever picked up ANY type of harmonica and made something vaguely resembling music, you will find this book beneath your level and never taking you to the next step. And one more point: I don't think the notation was very well thought-out; I find the constant use of "I" and "O" (in/out) cumbersome and hard to follow, compared to books that use a more intuitive visual cue (for example, circling the draw notes and leaving the blow notes uncircled).

And, hey you beginners--I'm not sure the book is so great for you, either. For example, surely you'd like a few of the 100+ pages devoted to a standard discussion of how to bend notes? Tough luck. When he gets around to "three advanced techniques," they are only afforded three pages. The seven lines on "throat vibrato" are unlikely to illuminate anyone who doesn't already know what the author is talking about. There is one page on bending, introduced by the (to me, somewhat obnoxious) statement that "Since I've already written an entire book on the subject, I'll just describe bending briefly here." Mo' money, mo' money!! With so much of the rest of the book packed with fluff, I find this disappointing. (If the author has devoted so much effort to explaining bending, surely he could come up with an impressive presentation of the gist for the purposes of this book?)

This is an OK book........1999-10-15

This book is good for beginners interested in learning to play the chromatic harmonica in Jazz/Blues/Rock style. It covers a little music theory, but not too heavy.

Experienced harmonica players (like myself) may find this book a bit disappointing in that the book spends a lot of time on basic techniques and only touches on more advanced techniques.

If you do get this book, I would recommend you also get the audio cassette. It helps clarify the material in the book.

A poker book written by a DOCTOR? Now I've seen everything!.......2005-08-22

Let's be honest here...I'm not the sharpest lightbulb in the toolshed. I decided I wanted to jump on the poker bandwagon and just see what all the fuss was about, but I only had cursory knowledge of how the game of pirates and cowboys actually worked. So one day I was browsing the 'Zon and came across this book. Looked interesting, a great review provided by Jonathan Roth, and the price is right...if I'm going to start gambling, I might as well start here!

It's written by two brothers: Curt and Dr. Doug Frye (I call them the "two aces"...LOL!) Yup, that's right...DOCTOR! And a COMPUTER EXPERT!

This book covers a lot of stuff. I never knew there were so many different versions of poker out there! PINEAPPLE?!? It's not just for cocktails anymore! LOL! I'm glad all of this is included....who knows what would've happened if I signed on and logged into some game I had no idea about. I wouldn't have even known the difference!

What I also found interesting was how in depth it gets with all these crazy situations you can get yourself into and how to handle them. I thought I was just going to get an overview of what hand beats what and things like that, but they managed to cram a lot of juiciness into this book. I like how they weave all of the normal poker stuff into playing online and all of the different program possibilities there are. This is very nice because right now, online is the only way I can play as I'm bedridden!

And not only will this book help sharpen your poker skills, it will sharpen your LAUGHING SKILLS! I'm so glad this book isn't some boring technical manual. The boys really know how to make a girl laugh!

Overall, if your someone slightly familiar with the game of poker but really want to approach it seriously, this is a great book to have! It covers all the basics, and I found it indispensible for getting started online and actually HOLDING ON TO my money. It also feels like a book I can grow into. I haven't been able to use all of the information in it yet, and I don't think I will outgrow it soon. Plus, it covers a lot of different games, so you don't have to buy allthese different books...it's all there in one handy guide! I keep it handy whenever I'm online.

Useful for Novices. .......2005-08-21

Perhaps a better title for this book would be, "A Thorough Introduction to Online Poker," as it excels in instructing readers about the basics of the game, but does not reveal many unknown secrets. It was published with neophytes in mind. Some of the topics, such as when the authors thoroughly discuss the legalities of online poker, are quite valuable; particularly when they quote from the federal court case illustrating the vagueness of the law in regards to contests. Further, there is a unique emphasis on the technological aspects of poker which is evident from the three chapters devoted to poker spreadsheets and software. The best of these programs are the ones which fit over the poker website like a template and record information automatically. The worst of them are the ones that make you record, with individual keystrokes, the results of your hands. It takes unusual dedication for the average player to do this, but I can see how it would immediately improve one's game.

Overall, with its stylish presentation and excellent organization, the manual is excellent for beginners, but I can't say that it offers much for those of us with a great deal of experience. Again, with few "secrets" shared, the title is rather misleading.

Book Review for WSOP.......2005-05-27

This book has all the good qualities of a beginning poker book and then goes farther, introducing the reader to ways of analyzing their game never covered before, as far as I've seen.

The authors begin with a quick primer on the history and legality of online poker and then move on to the basics of how to set up an online account and get money into it so you can play away. (Go to a place like rec.gambling.poker for more in-depth discussions on how the rewards programs work.) After that, they go into a lot of detail about the games themselves, which makes this book not only an internet poker book but also a general poker book. A very strong point is that they talk about several different games: Hold `Em, Stud, Stud Hi-Lo, Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo and Pineapple (a little). So many books concentrate on only one game. They get into the statistics a lot, noting that their statistical analyses showed you'll win a certain percentage of the money when you're in a given situation. They also go through the different ways the hands can win or lose depending on how the cards fall the rest of the way. In Omaha Hi-Lo, for example, they'll give you three a scenario in which three different hands are competing for the money. They describe how the best highs and lows can be made and how the situations change on the flop and the turn. Rest assured, though, they do cover Hold `Em extensively! This book does NOT cover pot-limit and no-limit poker, though.

The analysis section talks about how to use Excel and the Wilson Software packages to analyze your play. If you're serious about improving your game or are curious about how big a favorite or an underdog you are in a given situation or if you want to be able to play poker for free after buying the packages this seems like a good idea (I've never used the Wilson Software, I have to admit). But it would be interesting to see how a simulation would come out and by using something as simple as the chart wizard in Excel to cast an objective and unblinking eye on how well I play at certain times.

This book is really good and should be part of your poker library!

A Must Read for Any Video Poker Fan.......2002-08-16

A wonderful, comprehensive, easy to read book on video poker. It makes it easy and fun to play the game and to know you are making the right play. Lenny Frome deserves his title as master of video poker. I started out not really knowing how to play the game but now I love playing and feel confident that I am using the winning strategy! The EV tables make are easy to use. I also suggest reading VP Americas National Game of Chance by the same author.

I am a regular video poker player. I had heard many positive things about Mr. Frome's book, though I do not generally anjoy reading. The book was very enjoyable to read and immediately improved my play and that was very rewarding, if you know what I mean. I highly recomend the book for players at any level.

Not for Beginners.......2001-06-16

The author is a former rocket scientist and the book contains many charts that the "average" person may find difficult to fathom. There are very few explanations for the terms used in the charts and minimal examples. The beginning player wants to know why video poker is so popular; the difference between normal slots and video poker; what are full-pay machines. If you are just starting out - don't start with this book.

Don't Leave Home without this book!.......2000-07-21

I go to LV a couple of times a year and take frequent day trips to Atlantic City as well. I always make sure to bring this book with me. The book helps me make sure I only play the best paying machines with the best pay tables.

It has the strategy tables for more than 60 variations of Video Poker which makes it easy to learn how to play the version you like the most.

I also own the companion software which lets me practice on the same versions of the games and tells me when I make a mistake in playing.

If you play Video Poker, you HAVE to have this book

BEST VP BOOK EVER!.......1999-04-13

Frome has put together the best book on VP if you want to win. It includes the strategies for 60 of the most popular games out there including the very popular DOUBLE BONUS/DOUBLE-DOUBLE BONUS Games.

I was in Las Vegas back in February, and I found a strategy table in here for virtually every game I could find in a casino. Nothing is left out!

This Book is a Jump-Start to Winning VP.......2001-10-17

I was a Slots Player only, until I went searching for some VP advice. I found Video Poker Made Easier to be a step-by-step guide you can use as a jump-start to winning VP.
Now, I play Bonus and Deuces Wild correctly and come home from the casinos with more money. I have not completely given up on slots and will continue to follow the great tips and strategies from Ms. Mitchell and her All Slots Made Easier books.

This is a very good introductory book for beginners from a finance and accounting perspective.

Unhelpful textbook for accelerated courses.......2005-11-24

I experienced the textbook and Self-Study CD, with no other study guide.

I used this textbook with an online course (compressing 16 weeks into 8) and it was the most unhelpful textbook I have ever encountered! Perhaps with more time it would be clearer, but my fellow online students agreed that this was a difficult text to work with in a short time. A basic Accounting course should be a prerequisite, although that does not ensure success. The book assumes you have taken it. I hadn't but struggled along anyway - I highly recommend Wikipedia.com as a study aid.

This textbook does not give clear definitions. If you enjoy reverse-engineering, this will not bother you. New concepts are presented in a convoluted manner, not This = That, but a whole paragraph on This without saying what it actually means, along with a series of (finished, not step-by-step) examples. You are meant to "get it" in context.

Tip: know your terminology and several synonyms. Study questions and tests often use different words and phrases for concepts in the chapter than what they were initially named or stated as.

The CD provides a quick-reference glossary (equivalent to the back of the book), chapter summaries, practice tests, and handy Excel worksheets for many of the chapter problems. The tests were good, but remember the Tip.

Another Tip: a squishy Stress Ball or Ergobeads product is a wise investment for frustration management (if you don't take to this subject like a duck to water).
