German National Cinema is the first comprehensive account in English of German cinema from its origins to the present. Covering all the major movements from Expressionism to the New Wave, Sabine Hake traces the development of German cinema in relation to political and social change, from the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich to the complex divisions of post-war Germany and the impact of reunification.
Focusing on key themes including genre, audiences and stars, Hake examines German film's relationship with other national cinemas and cultural practices, and traces the artistic under and counter-currents, technological innovations, and social transformations that defined each era of German film. She explores the conflicts and contradictions which have sustained the tension between cinema and politics and cinema and high culture in Germany, and shows how a highly politicized cinema often produced surprisingly apolitical films.
Book Description
The German Cinema Book brings together film specialists from Europe and the United States to explore German film history from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. This comprehensive collection reevaluates traditional areas of interest in German cinema (such as Weimar cinema, Nazi pro-paganda, New German Cinema) and complements this with a fresh look at hitherto neglected aspects, including early cinema, the cinema of the GDR, popular genre traditions, questions of national cinema and identity, and German film's transnational connections to Hollywood, as well as to exile and migrant cinemas. Corresponding to wider shifts in critical debates, the book places particular emphasis on genres and stars in the wider context of state and industry at home and abroad.

Richard McCormick takes a fresh look at the crisis of gender in Weimar Germany through an analysis of selected cultural texts, both literary and film, characterized under the label "New Objectivity". The New Objectivity was marked by a sober, unsentimental embrace of urban modernity, in contrast to Expressionism's horror of technology and belief in "auratic" art. This sensibility was gendered as well as contradictory: while associated with male intellectuals, New Objectivity was best symbolized by the New Woman they feared (and desired). Moving skillfully from Caligari to Dietrich, McCormick traces the crisis of gender identities, both male and female, and reveals how a variety of narratives of the time displaced an assortment of social anxieties onto sexual relations.

Heide Fehrenbach analyzes the important role cinema played in the reconstruction of German cultural and political identity between 1945 and 1962. Concentrating on the former West Germany, she explores the complex political uses of film—and the meanings attributed to film representation and spectatorship—during a period of abrupt transition to democracy.
According to Fehrenbach, the process of national redefinition made cinema and cinematic control a focus of heated ideological debate. Moving beyond a narrow political examination of Allied-German negotiations, she investigates the broader social nexus of popular moviegoing, public demonstrations, film clubs, and municipal festivals. She also draws on work in gender and film studies to probe the ways filmmakers, students, church leaders, local politicians, and the general public articulated national identity in relation to the challenges posed by military occupation, American commercial culture, and redefined gender roles. Thus highlighting the links between national identity and cultural practice, this book provides a richer picture of what German reconstruction entailed for both women and men.

This is a two book series. The first text, in English, covers the wide range of German films. The second text covers a selection of the same films with emphasis on German language skills. Two texts, one covering 31 German films in English; the other, 12 of those in German. Thus, one or both can be used for courses in German film in English, courses in German film in German, or courses which for various reasons might cater to students taking either track simultaneously in the same course. This book is a must read for anyone leading people. It's a great resource for understanding how people think, work and produce more effiently. The author keeps the book very interesting by the number of examples provided. The scientific information is excellent. Not too heavy but enough to let you understand the reasons behind the information.
I wish the book provided at least a way for readers to take the test without the additional charge of taking the test individually.

Its great on theory, its demonstrate we as individual are a complex being and our profile is seasonal. The main reason I bought the book is to find out about my profile and disappointed not finding any starter or basic self help tool kit in the book other than visiting the book website and an additional payment of $100 is needed before result can be delivered to me.

I found this book very interesting. It is about what the author describes as the 4 thinking attributes (Social, Conceptual, Analytical and Structural) and 3 behavioral attributes (Expressiveness, Assertivess and Flexibility), how to identify attributes in people and yourself, how you can interact with others based on others attributes, how to make better decisions and how to create and work in great teams (among other things).
One of the cool things is that Dr. Browning eats her own dog food in that she applies what she is preaching in the way she wrote the book. For the analytical, there are explanations of brain activity and the science behind her findings. For the social, throughout the book, she explains how emergenetics can be beneficial to personal relationships. For the conceptual, there are colorful pictures of the different attributes that give readers the big picture and a quick glimpse of what emergenetics is about.
Another thing that I liked about the book was that I learned a good amount of information about the brain and how it works that I did not know before. The quotes sprinkled throughout the book were also interesting and timely.
This is another book to add to my aspiring WE (Whole Emergenetics) organizations' libraries. :)

Despite its clumsy name, Geil Browining's Emergenetics, offers practical and pragmatic advice on how to assess one's thinking and behavioral preferences on seven useful dimensions. Analytical, Structural, Conceptual and Social cover the thinking preferences and Expressiveness, Assertiveness and Flexibility cover the behavioral preferences. Emergenetics is the practice of developing thinking and behavior profiles on hundreds of thousands of individuals, analyzing these profiles for general understanding of individuals and groups and applying them to the improvement of personal and team effectiveness. Although the book doesn't discuss how profiles are generated, there is enough material to provide useful guidance to the reader in identifying and assessing these preferences in yourself and others.
