Product Description
The 1930s are routinely considered sound film's greatest comedy era. Though this golden age encompassed various genres of laughter, clown comedy is the most basic type. This work examines the Depression decade's most popular type of comedy-the clown, or personality comedian. Focusing upon the Depression era, the study filters its analysis through twelve memorable pictures. Each merits an individual chapter, in which it is critiqued. The films are deemed microcosmic representatives of the comic world and discussed in this context. While some of the comedians in this text have generated a great deal of previous analysis, funnymen like Joe E. Brown and Eddie Cantor are all but forgotten. Nevertheless, they were comedy legends in their time, and their legacy, as showcased in these movies, merits rediscovery by today's connoisseur of comedy. Even this book's more familiar figures, such as Charlie Chaplin and the Marx Brothers, are often simply relegated to being recognizable pop culture icons whose work has been neglected in recent years. This book attempts to address these oversights and to re-expose the brilliance and ingenuity with which the screen clowns contributed a comic resiliency that was desperately needed during the Depression and can still be greatly appreciated today. The films discussed are City Lights (1931, Chaplin), The Kid From Spain (1932, Cantor), She Done Him Wrong (1933, Mae West), Duck Soup (1933, Marx Brothers), Sons of the Desert (1933, Laurel and Hardy), Judge Priest (1934, Will Rogers), It's a Gift (1934, W.C. Fields), Alibi Ike (1935, Brown), A Night at the Opera (1935, Marx Brothers), Modern Times (1936, Chaplin), Way Out West (1937, Laurel and Hardy), and The Cat and the Canary (1939, Bob Hope).

Book Description
Pioneer of political documentary and inventor of cinéma vérite, Dziga Vertov has exerted a decisive influence on directors from Eisenstein to Godard. Yet his reputation long rested upon a lone masterpiece, Man with a Movie Camera. Recently, however Vertov has begun to be recognised as the creator of a body of innovative and distinct films and, as Jeremy Hicks argues, documentary as we know it today is unthinkable without the rediscovery of Vertov. This, the first book in English to cover the whole of Vertov’s career, reveals him to be an auteur, allowing readers to combine the familiar and less familiar aspects of his filmmaking and thinking in a cohesive narrative.
Jeremy Hicks demonstrates how Vertov draws on Soviet journalistic models for his transformation of newsreel into the new form of documentary film. Through analyses of Cine-Pravda No 21 (Leninist Cine-Pravda), Cine-Eye, Forward Soviet!, A Sixth Part of the Earth, The Eleventh Year, Man with a Movie Camera, Enthusiasm, Three Songs of Lenin, and Lullaby, he shows how Vertov’s greatest works combine authentic documentary footage ingeniously for tremendous rhetorical effect.
Today, with the energetic revival of interest in documentary film, Vertov’s reflexive and overtly partisan films are of great relevance; but they need to be better known and understood. This is the purpose of Dziga Vertov – Defining Documentary Film.

From the supplier: Asian American cinema presents a challenge in terms of definition. Most Asian American film scholars feel that the term, Asian American, needs to be clarified. The Asian part is construed as an adjective, which goes against grammatical rules. Considering that a hyphen should be placed between complex nouns defining another noun, Asian Americans feel that to be grammatically correct would derogate their identity as split in allegiance between two cultures, which is not the case.

Award-winning trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis has garnered more credit and criticism than any other jazz artist of his generation. In Skain's Domain, the first biography of Marsalis, author Leslie Gourse provides a fast-moving overview of Marsalis's highs and lows. Gourse, a jazz biography specialist who also penned Straight No Chaser: The Life and Genius of Thelonious Monk and Sassy: The Life of Sarah Vaughan, focuses more on Marsalis as a pop icon rather than as a musical figure. At her best, Gourse reveals Marsalis's conventional, post Civil Rights-era upbringing in the South--along with his quirky relationship with brother Branford, and his duels with Miles Davis and jazz critics--adding a needed dimension to his public persona. "Whether as a result of his New Orleans environment, his natural indications, his family upbringing, his early successes and the terrific attention he was accorded, or all those elements," she writes, "Wynton drove himself relentlessly to achieve his twin goals of establishing himself as a masterful musician and elevating jazz in its rightful place." Though Gourse often focuses more on the man than on his music, her portrait of Marsalis will be of interest to the general reader, and it serves as a solid starting point for future works on this celebrated artist. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Book Description
In the first full-length biography of this masterful trumpeter, composer, and co-founder of Jazz at Lincoln Center, author Leslie Gourse reveals the private side of one of the most talented and controversial figures in music today. Written with the full participation of Wynton Marsalis and based on hours of interviews with the artist, his family, friends, and musical associates.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful but falls short.......2007-07-20
While the book is a good attempt to provide the reader with insight into Wynton's development and road to success, as a trumpet player, I cant help but be bothered by numerous details that are either left out or not adequately elaborated on. Just to give a few examples, how could the author not even mention William Fielder, who was an important and influential teacher of Wynton, among others? Also, even though the book is about Wynton, the author describes how Wynton and Terrence Blanchard discussed their career plans and Terrence's plan to go to Los Angeles to "study with a "trumpet player or teacher" if my memory serves me correctly. Who?!!
The book also makes it sound like Wynton had some immortal ability to practice endlessly on a daily basis. Any brass player knows that you only have limited reserves and that you have to pace yourself or burn your chops out. Wynton is obviously a very gifted player with natural abilities who worked hard, but he is also a sensible human being who knew his limits.
It would have also been good to include more things about his short experience at Juilliard-Im sure that someone could have at least mentioned something about his audition if nothing more.
Preaching the Gospel of Jazz.......2002-12-08
Wynton Marsalis is rather young to be a subject of a biography. However, he has been so very prolific in virtually all avenues of the art of music that there is more than ample material for a biographer to explore. Leslie Gourse's writing is in depth, focused, and enjoyable to read. She traces Wynton's childhood, his intra-family relationships, his early days of music making, his stint with Art Blakey, his leadership of small jazz combos, his award winning jazz and European concert recordings, his artistic development (both musically and philosophically), his children and romantic relationships, and his (in my opinion) unjustifiably controversial stewardship of the Jazz at Lincoln Center program.
Ms. Gourse brings all of these aspects of Wynton's life and career to the forefront. The book recounts the stories made infamous by the popular press (anger over Branford's defection to Sting, the onstage confrontation with Miles Davis, the allegations of racial bias at Lincoln Center), but it delves into much more interesting areas as well. I was particularly interested in Wynton's non-stop daily schedule of music making, practicing, composing, lecturing on musical subjects, and helping young musicians through impromptu practice sessions and telephone calls. I was also intrigued by the development of Wynton's philosophical views on music and life beginning with his parents' influence by example, and perhaps culminating with Wynton's discussions with the writer, Albert Murray. Mr. Murray exposed Wynton to a reading list of important works of literature, politics, and American social history which was as influential to Wynton as it would be to any young person with a keen intellect and a desire to make sense out of the world.
Of course, the bottom line to this biography is Wynton's love of jazz and his never ending efforts in sharing that treasure with the world. I have no doubt that Wynton Marsalis will be swinging like a tiger and preaching the gospel of jazz every day of his life. This book is ultimately a celebration of that spirit.
Highly recommended.
Captivating reading for musicians and non musicians alike........1999-11-07
"Skains Domain" Leslie Gourse
This book is just superb. Gourse gives us a total look into the life of one of the greatest jazz musicians and the greatest trumpet virtuoso of our time. The book gives mainly accounts from interviews held with Wynton, his friends, and his family members. It provides great detail of his beginnings as Artistic Director of the highly heralded Jazz @ Lincoln Center program, as well as various aspects into his personal relationship with former girlfriend, and Mother of two of his children: Candace Stanley. It also deals with the relationship between Marsalis and Actress Victoria Rowell, of which he has one other son. The book really digs into what it's like to be in "Skains Domain". I would say that this is a must for anyone interested in Jazz or in Wynton. Wynton is truly a remarkable man, and what makes this book best is that it allows you to see that not only is Wynton one of the greatest musicians of the 20th Century, but also a very kind and caring gentlemen. The book also lets you see how his music and his career has evolved. It is fascinating to read how his Quintet, transformed into a Quartet, then to a Septet and finally evolving into his career at Lincoln Center. Wynton cares about perpetuating the music, and bringing it to the forefront of the public eye. He is also a great student of the music, paying close attention and homage to his elders and learning from them along the way. He is not about awards and accolades, of which he has many. This is not what Skain is really about. He is however about being a first class musician and spokesman for the greatest American Art form: Jazz. Wynton, I am sure that if Pops were alive, he would be very proud of you. Marsalis is the Michael Jordan of the music world. Being a trumpet player myself and having had several occasions to talk to Wynton briefly, I am really motivated by this book to be a better educator and a better trumpet player.

Book Description
Traveling with ornithologists John O'Neill and Ted Parker on two separate expeditions into the Peruvian rain forest, Don Stap gives a firsthand account of the gritty realities and unexpected triumphs of fieldwork in the South American jungle. He describes the thrill of discovering previously unknown species of birds--and the sobering realization that "progress" is fast destroying both habitat and inhabitants in the rain forest.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book about the frontiers of ornithology.......2001-03-01
Anyone who thinks all the vertebrates of this world have been discovered and described should think again. This book chronicles the work of ornithologists in the mountains and jungles of Peru and elsewhere in South America as they hunt for new and often exotic bird species. Focusing mainly on the work of LSU ornithologists and in particular the accomplished John O'Neill, it provides a first hand view of such expeditions, describes many of the new birds species found, shows how ornithologists work (it's not just bird-watching either), and provides interesting discussions on issues relating to taxonomy, scientific credibility, collecting specimens, conservation, neotropical ecology, evolution, and even South American politics. I highly recommend it.
Recounts the details of birding expeditions in Peru.......1997-05-07
The visceral details of collecting specimens oftropical birds and the gruelling politics of bringingsuch an expedition to Peru make for intense reading. An avid birder, Stap managed to hook up with LSU ornithologists John O'Neill and the late Ted Parker. Through the dense canopy he followed the crew and documented their trials and triumphs. Most notably a new species of parrot was found.

A BOOK YOU CAN'T FINISH.......2001-06-07
I bought this book when it was new, before the contest was over. Since I did not enter, I never found out the result. I would love to find out the winning entry (if there was one) and to exchange ideas with others. This book has haunted my mind for more than fifteen years! It is original, tantalizing, and exquisitely illustrated. The only problem is the ongoing enigma of what the actual title is!
Stays in your mind forever.......1999-08-31
The pictures in this book are so beautiful that they will make you want to cry.
An illustrated quest to uncover the title of the book........1998-07-27
This "Book Without a Title" actually does have a title. It is up to the reader to discover what that title is. Basing your judgment upon clues provided in the text and illustrations, it is your goal to discover the intended title. Unfortunately, the contest associated with this quest ended long ago. The contest, as defined by the author, was to first discover the title then express that title "without using the written word." The prize was the object pictured on the cover of the book: an intricately inlaid bee-box with a bejeweled queen bee ornament. My assumption is that this prize was awarded back in 1985, as the back cover copy suggests. That is not to say that this book is not worth finding. The illustrations are breathtaking in their clarity; the text is lighthearted and quirky. It bears mentioning that I first encountered this book, along with its companion MASQUERADE, during my stint as a "gifted" student many years ago. I wa! s enthralled by both books, and I believe that any bright mind would enjoy them as well. Also for the record, I have my own idea as to the title (I never heard the results of the contest), but I'm not telling.

Customer Reviews:
Suspicious reviews!.......2007-03-31
While this middle eastern folk tale is probably harmless, the reviews here are probably written by the publisher, Hoopoe Books, a division of the Institute for the Study of Human Knowledge. Why do I think so? Because they use the same language to be found on that organization's website, including references to Columbine. Will books like this build mental abilities? Maybe. The followers of Idries Shah, a writer on Sufism (Islamic mysticism) who believes that all religions share a secret source, would have you think so. My suggestion would be to buy Shah's books if you like Persian or Turkish stories, many of which are charming. But beware of outlandish claims.
Think outside the box.......2003-09-24
The editorial reviews of by Idries Shah's books for children are laughable at best. Although the reviewers seem to be qualified, librarians and such, they are completely dumbfounded by his stories and the middle east context of the stories. These books are not for the Elmo reviewers. They are highly sophisticated stories that are meant to develop the mind. Idries Shah books, for children and adults, are truly devices meant to develop the mind, thinking and understanding that is outside the box. The stories are beautifully illustrated and are fun to read. I recommend these books to any parent who wants to teach their child a new way to think and to develop their mind.
My 4-year-old's favorite.......2001-07-17
My 4-year-old got this book for her birthday and it's now her absolute favorite. This is the book she asks for it every night - which makes her dad and me happy because we love reading it. Who knows why, but I do know that the books and stories I loved most as a kid were just like this one - they invoked a sense of magic and fulfillment just beyond my everyday world that I knew in my heart of hearts I could aspire to. What more could we ask for in a book for our kids?
Childrens books by Idries Shah build mental agility.......2001-07-17
Tragedies like Columbine are a wake-up call. It's clear that we need to provide our kids - especially boys - with tools to counter the violence and knee-jerk aggression ubiquitous in popular culture. These children's stories by Idries Shah are just this kind of tool. They're not preachy. They don't offer simplistic lessons or moral platitudes. They're more like exercises for "mental muscle groups" grossly underdeveloped in this culture: A strong sense of one's own value. Empathy. Flexibility in thinking and responding. Appreciating that not everyone is the same, not every outcome is predictable. Seeing that there are more than two sides to a situation. A sense that patience and perseverance can pay off, sometimes in unexpected ways. Not demanding easy answers. A sense that things are not always as they seem, that the viewpoint of "experts" - or even the whole community - is not always right. The experience of seeing something that even adults don't see, of creating clever solutions. The sense that taking positive action is possible and rewarding-even when one has to buck the tide. That help can come from where and when we least expect it. The sense that life has interesting "loose ends" for us to reflect on. And so much more. At least one of these books should be on every child's book shelf.
A wonderfully recounted and illustrated Sufi folktale........2000-11-07
In The Boy Without A Name, a young boy seeks and eventually finds his own name and is able to discard an old dream for a new and wonderful one. Highly recommended for personal, school and community library picturebook collections, The Boy Without A Name is an entertaining and thoughtful Sufi folktale which is wonderfully recounted by Idries Shah and marvelously illustrated with watercolor paintings by Mona Caron.

Marketing wiz Jay Abraham provides some powerful strategies for boosting your career or business in Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got. Abraham believes that anyone can advance in life by tapping into hidden assets and developing the right mindset. He writes, "You are surrounded by simple, obvious solutions that can dramatically increase your income, power, influence and success. The problem is, you just don't see them." Over the course of 21 chapters, he shows how to get ahead by treating bosses and clients as valued friends; find better and more exciting ways of doing things; develop "unique selling propositions"; persuade people to follow your lead; master the art of selling on the telephone; craft a formal referral system; sell on the Internet; and forge strong, established business relationships. Abraham's central theme is that everyone is in sales. In almost any profession, people must be skilled at selling themselves and their ideas, not just their company's product or service. Engagingly written, the book features more than 200 examples of people and companies who have successfully used these techniques, from Bill Gates and Dennis Rodman to Sharper Image and Federal Express. --Dan Ring

Customer Reviews:
Mind Blowing!.......2007-09-26
This book is the best marketing book I've read so far. I was amazed at the simple, yet powerful concepts that Jay laid out in the book, as well as some of the very sophisticated, and lucrative deals that he was able to put together in his case studies in the book.
This guy is the best... Hands down.
Crash Course in Effective Marketing.......2007-09-23
Like Dan Kennedy's No B.S. Direct Marketing: The Ultimate, No Holds Barred, Kick Butt, Take No Prisoners Direct Marketing for Non-direct Marketing Businesses (No B.S.), this book by Jay Abraham is a primer containing practical steps to take your business where you want to go with it. Implementing just one of the steps will more than pay for your investment in the book. If you like what you read, then I highly recommend picking up a copy of Money-making Secrets of Marketing Genius Jay Abraham and Other Marketing Wizards (A No-Nonsense Guide to Great Wealth and a Personal Fortune) a.k.a. the Mr. X Book. If you only want to get one Abraham book, pick the Mr. X Book over this one. However, both are good. The Mr. X Book is simply better because it contains so much more information that you can use in your business.
Scary good - you'll never look at business the same way again.......2007-08-18
This book is so good it's scary. It's scary to think about how powerful the principles are that Jay shares. It's also scary to think...what if I had gone through life and never been exposed to this?
I've read alot of business books. By Trump, Richard Branson, Robert Allen, Al Ries, Seth Godin, etc. They give you answers and little pieces of the puzzle.
They'll talk about customer service or "permission marketing" or another "hot strategy". Jay's material just obliterates everything else out there, he's not just giving you a 1/4 of the answer or an 1/8, he's giving you the whole answer. Answers that other people would charge thousands of dollars for in seminars, tens of thousands of dollars.
I'm a big fan of Jay. I have this book, many of his seminar tapes, Mastermind, PEQ, Strategy Summit. And many other reports and interviews.
The techniques and strategies he gives you are very, very powerful and profound. But there's so much hidden value in studying his material and really dissecting and analyzing what he's doing.
He's sold tens of millions of dollars worth of his own products and seminars. He sells out $15,000 seminars. Most people struggle to earn $200 or $300 an hour for consulting, how does Jay get $5,000? Why is it so powerful? Where does he get his answers from? I'd rip apart every word and every sentence he shares.
I'd study..
-His own positioning and selling strategies. His writing style is to die for. It'd serve as an incredible model/template if you write a newsletter, ezine, etc. Jay pounds into your head, "make everything have to perform", and obviously he does it with his writing.
-It amazes me that everyone wants to make money, we live in a very competitive world, and yet some of the answers Jay gives are so simple, why does everyone miss them?
For example, most people's advertising budget has no correlation to what a customer is worth. Jay focuses on marginal net worth. Most people think they're selling a drill, Jay focuses on the hole. Most people fall in love with the wrong thing (paraphrasing Jay). They want to be the biggest, the best, the fastest growing. They fall in love with the medium or the technology. It's trite, but Jay focuses on falling in love with the customer.
A huge error people make in business is thinking that the deeper they go in whatever they're doing (allocating a budget, selling, advertising, lead generating) the better they'll become. But you'll never come up with the right answers if you focus on the wrong thing. If you keep selling a drill a 100 times, it won't turn into a hole. Most people in business see alot of activity, Jay sees myopia, limited thinking and limited understanding (thus Jay's 3-D glasses).
-Lastly, Jay is brilliant at reducing and simplifying everything down to a core driving principle. Figuring out what makes something work. It's such an overlooked skill for entrepreneur and people in business.
A direct quote from Jay (from one of his tapes)
"The clearer your understanding, the simpler and the more reduced your awareness, of what makes something work, the more powerful it normally becomes."
That's a huge skill to develop. Forget about all this other stuff out there. Jumping on the latest fad, or tweaking something.
There's also alot of other lateral applications that I wonder about. He makes it look so easy. What would be the Jay equivilant in investing or real estate investing?
A mind blowing book.
The Magic of Jay Abraham for the Price of a Pizza.......2007-08-18
Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got is Jay's only "real" published book, but it represents the summary of his collective experience and wisdom from decades of helping businesses optimize their own businesses.
Sure, you could hire Jay personally and pay thousands of dollars, and for many of you reading this, that may be the best move you ever made for your business.
But, for just a few dollars you can put Jay's magic to work immediately.
Yes, it is magic because he helps you create more money from the same assets you already have.
I sincerely believe you could take one or two ideas in this book and revolutionize your existing business.
Jay has a unique way of viewing the world...it's like he has the only pair of 3D glasses. For a glimpse into "Jay's World", get this book!
Maybe those were different times.......2007-06-08
The book is good, with a lot of useful strategis, but it doesn't live up to buzz Jay Abraham creates for himself.
I guess that either the book is dated or Mr. Abraham has sandbaged information to sell his more profitable products.
