Cross-Check on Marilyn Monroe's My Story and Casual Glimpses.......2001-01-26
At 26, Marilyn Monroe was on the brink of stardom as she filmed her first leading role in Niagara. Canadian photojournalist Jock Carroll spent weeks with her at Niagara Falls during the on location shooting, and took almost 400 photographs. He also interviewed her throughout these weeks, and captured a lot of her activities on and off the set. He was preparing for an article called "Marilyn's Not So Menacing" that appeared in an August 1952 issue of Weekend Magazine, Canada's largest periodical at the time. You will see more candid photographs in this book than in any other source. Mr. Carroll died in 1995, and these photographs were located then. The photographs are well reproduced in this book, and bring her to life in both her glamorous and nonglamorous roles.
I was attracted to this book when I realized that it contained extensive interviews of Marilyn Monroe when she was 26, just before she reportedly drafted My Story. That autobiographical book has come in for many challenges concerning its authenticity and the strong stories contained in it. Reading the interviews in Falling for Marilyn provides a useful contrast in terms of what she says about herself and how she says it.
I was surprised to see that the stories she tells are almost identical in both books. That similarity argues for either for her being the author of My Story, or Mr. Carroll being the author. Interestingly, she tells a story here of having been recognized in school for her fiction as a child, and wanting to become an author. The most significant difference between the books was that here she claims to have needed the $50 she got for shooting the famous nude photographs to pay rent while in My Story, the money is used to retrieve her repossessed car. A minor discrepency comes in her asking Mr. Carroll a lot about Korea because she was thinking about doing a USO tour there. In My Story, she claims that this came up for the first time after she and Joe DiMaggio were in Japan on their honeymoon. There could be truth in both versions of these two stories.
There is a Zsa Zsa Gabor story here that is almost word-for-word the same as in My Story. This is true, as well, for one about being molested as a little girl by a boarder who paid her a nickel to keep quiet.
To me, the most telling comparison was in what Mr. Carroll observed about her. Even though she was making a fine salary at this point, she was always short of clothes while he was with her. This is something that she talks about a lot as being a function of her poverty in My Story. She also was always studying scripts or reading intellectual books, which is consistent with My Story also. She also made self-destructive comments about sleeping pills to Mr. Carroll as she does in My Story.
What was a pleasant surprise for me was Mr. Carroll's descriptions of his reactions to her. Those are missing from most books about Ms. Monroe. He had just come back from his own honeymoon a month before. He found himself strongly attracted to her, despite this. "The effect on me was cataclysmic." " . . . [W]hen she looked directly at you, it made you feel as though . . . you were sharing some naughty secret."
The photographs themselves are certainly sexy, but not revealing in the sense that we think of revealing today. They were daring, however, for 1952 in showing a little cleavage, a loose blouse, and sometimes erect nipples through her clothes.
She consciously worked on achieving this effect for these photographs. During a tour of a silverware factory, "Marilyn brightened [these] . . . photos by loosening the straps of her blouse, leaning over . . . to give . . . a good view of her breasts . . . ."
On the other hand, she was very protective of her relationship with Joe DiMaggio who did not want any publicity. She refused an interview where the interviewer was trying to worm in questions about the Yankee slugger.
My favorite photographs in the book include:
Reading script in bed (two page spread), located in the book's very beginning
Posing in front of the falls, p. 19
Visiting the silverware factory, p. 33
Combing her hair, p. 48
Arranging her hair, pp. 52-53
Laughing, pp. 84-85
Looking at Jean Peters' suit, p. 87
Smiling, p. 102
Seeing the vibrancy of this woman makes the sadness of her life all the more poignant. Be sure to read My Story to pick up on that contrast. Regardless of who wrote it, that is how Ms. Monroe saw herself and her life.
Consider how you can lift someone's spirits every day. Look for the hurting heart behind the naughty or haughty eyes . . . or any other strongly affecting mannerisms you notice. They are just part of the cover up.
This book shows the real Marilyn.......2000-10-26
'Niagra' is known for the movie that made Marilyn Monroe a star, and this book shows every moment of her life during the filming. As a true Monroe fan, I'm more interested in the casual candid photos of her more so than the made-up studio photography. My favorite photos of her in the book are the pictures taken of her while she was learning how to smoke a cigarette for the film. She had never smoked before and had to look like a natural within a few hours. These are photos you wouldn't see on a billboard or in a magazine. They show her true nature. They show her being a real person, vulnerable and timid.
If u love MARILYN..get this BOOK!.......2000-05-09
Wonderful, oversized hardcover book with lots of black and white images of Marilyn while at Niagara Falls, shooting her first mayor movie "Niagara" in '52. I enjoy all the photographs, my favorites are where Marilyn practices smoking. There are also pictures of her with Joe Dimaggio before they were married, pictures of Marilyn without her make-up on and her face covered with vaseline as she liked to do. Reading her script while relaxing in bed. These are priceless photographs, showing Marilyn at the very brink of superstardom.

Book Description
The establishment of the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) in the late 1980s allowed hobbyists and musicians to experiment with sound control in ways that previously had been possible only in research studios. MIDI is now the most prevalent representation of music, but what it represents is based on hardware control protocols for sound synthesis. Programs that support sound input for graphics output necessarily span a gamut of representational categories. What is most likely to be lost is any sense of the musical work. Thus, for those involved in pedagogy, analysis, simulation, notation, and music theory, the nature of the representation matters a great deal. An understanding of the data requirements of different applications is fundamental to the creation of interchange codes.
The contributors to Beyond MIDI present a broad range of schemes, illustrating a wide variety of approaches to music representation. Generally, each chapter describes the history and intended purposes of the code, a description of the representation of the primary attributes of music (pitch, duration, articulation, ornamentation, dynamics, and timbre), a description of the file organization, some mention of existing data in the format, resources for further information, and at least one encoded example. The book also shows how intended applications influence the kinds of musical information that are encoded.
Contributors: David Bainbridge, Ulf Berggren, Roger D. Boyle, Donald Byrd, David Cooper, Edmund Correia, Jr., David Cottle, Tim Crawford, J. Stephen Dydo, Brent A. Field, Roger Firman, John Gibson, Cindy Grande, Lippold Haken, Thomas Hall, David Halperin, Philip Hazel, Walter B. Hewlett, John Howard, David Huron, Werner Icking, David Jaffe, Bettye Krolick, Max V. Mathews, Toshiaki Matsushima, Steven R. Newcomb, Kia-Chuan Ng, Kjell E. Customer Reviews:
Essential reference for anyone interested in encoding of music.......2006-03-24
The purpose of this book is to provide a general description, with encoded examples, of numerous ways of representing music in the computer. This book is a collection of chapters by different authors each describing a musical code, usually the format of an input or data file for a music program. There is usually not enough information given to make a comprehensive description, but enough information is presented so that the reader has a good idea of what each code is like and can probably implement an interpreter of a reasonable functionality. Readers looking for a description of a particular code would be advised to check first, as there are some notable omissions. This is not an inadequacy on the part of the publishers, as obtaining permission can be difficult. It is also possible that there are important omissions due more to the editors not knowing of the existence of particular codes. A more serious flaw is the fact that the chapters were contributed over a number of years and some of the earlier ones, including contact details, were not updated prior to printing.
The book distinguishes between three types of musical codes, depending on whether its primary function is to play sound, to produce printed notation, or to aid in analysis and research. It also describes some proposed interchange formats. The descriptions are authoritative wherever possible, being obtained from the authors of the programs in question or other experts. There are some annoying 'typos' such as swapped or missing examples and incorrect appendix definitions, but they should be obvious enough not to mislead many readers. The inclusion of English Braille and the proposed New International Standard, although unexpected, is to be commended.
The book concludes with a section entitled "Reflections", which seems to equate "difficult" with "impossible" in an alarming way. Despite the title of the section, I don't think that it is clear enough that the reader has now left the factual world of file formats where "this byte does that" and is entering that of opinion, mostly about interchange possibilities. There are also some guidelines for those who find it necessary to write a new music code.
This book is essential reading for anyone writing their own music program or devising their own "musical code". The book has a website that includes errata, updates and complementary material for different chapters, and a list of links to other sites dealing with musical codes. Since Amazon usually throws out reviews with web addresses in them, suffice it to say that you need to type "CCARH Publications Books" into Google, and the first address you see will show a list of websites for books, and this book should be the first in the short list shown.

Language games allow children to stretch their communication abilities, enhancing vocabulary, conversation, and storytelling skills. A suggested age range accompanies each game in this book; some games may be adapted to different age groups. Language games for beginners focus on making children aware of the ways letters look, the presence of letters in their surroundings (on signs, for instance), and the different letter systems in different cultures. More advanced games include creating poems and haiku, making up stories, and joke-telling. 39 black-and-white illustrations are included in this wonderful resource for teachers, therapists, and social workers.
Customer Reviews:
Some good ideas--but could use a "grammar/functions index".......1999-02-21
There are some good, easy to use ideas in this book, but you have to go through it one page at a time to find out what function or grammar is to be practiced in each game. On a positive note, the activities are divided into language level. The games I have used in the classroom, have been a success with the students.

Customer Reviews:
A Terrific informative read!.......2007-09-30
For me the title says it all. This book really does make options easy and the author goes the extra mile by explaining everything in multiple ways. If you're logical, he covers it, if you're visual, he covers it and I'm a bit of both. I also appreciated the way in which every trade example was documented in a table and compared with a different type of trade. Great book.
Apik untuk pemula, good for beginners.......2007-05-21
Bukune apik, untuk tingkat pemula, good for beginners, with detail explantions, but still need in depth about special tricks in difficult conditions.
Perfect introduction to options trading.......2007-05-13
Serious option traders will want much more in-depth education on the ins and outs of option trading, but I would still recommend Cohen's "Options Made Easy" as the introductory book on options trading to anyone who wants to learn. He has a way of taking very complex topics and breaking down the basics into something the uninitiated can comprehend. More importantly, reading his book gave me confidence that I could learn this subject and successfully trade options myself.
Easy to understand.......2007-05-05
I found this book easy to understand. It's a very good introduction to the world of options trading and I would recommend it to anyone considering trading in options. It covers topics that some courses costing thousands just gloss over.
A must read for the beginner,,.......2007-04-11
In a world which focuses more on entertaining the reader rather than actually providing them with consistent useful information, Cohen actually believes in teaching. Although a tough subject (to me), he really breaks the information down and builds the reader up to a level of understanding and confidence to begin.
I especially liked how he helps you to start and construct your own plan of attack after realizing how to enter the game but without a biased opinion on which one is better.
(The area on Technical Analysis was great, however I do wish that he would of spent a little more time on breaking some of the charts down).
Even with that I learned quite a bit.
I am a young college student with lots of enthusiasm about entering the options game and will be getting his Bible Of Options Strategies as well.
