Book Description

Now brought completely up to date, the new edition of this classic work on documentary films and filmmaking surveys the history of the genre from 1895 to the present day. With the myriad social upheavals over the past decade, documentaries have enjoyed an international renaissance; here Barnouw considers the medium in the light of an entirely new political and social climate. He examines as well the latest filmmaking technology, and the effects that video cassettes and cable television are having on the production of documentaries. And like the previous editions, Documentary is filled with photographs, many of them rare, collected during the author's travels around the world. Covering the full course of the documentary from Louis Lumiere's first effort to recent landmark productions such as Shoah, this book makes the growing importance of a unique blend of art and reality accessible and understandable to all film lovers.

5 out of 5 stars A book about reality.......2002-05-29

I own a splanish version of this book that I used on some of my school's courses. I belive this is a great book for people interested in the other face of the film industry. It is a must buy for the people that want to go into the reality film industry

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Learning Guide.......2000-09-15

If you are interested in Documentary Film, this is a great introduction to the genre. Barnouw brings you through history with ease and enjoyment. I found it extremely satisfactory; definitely not a disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Introduction to the World of Non-Fiction Films.......2000-07-06

I know that when you see a book receive the five star rating you think that the person reviewing is either tender-hearted or an ignoramus as it is inconceivable to think of a perfect book. However, since I am neither tender-hearted nor an ignoramus I give you my word that Barnouw's book is an amazing reference guide to the world of non-fiction films. Its an incredibly quick read, it took me a matter of days despite a hectic schedule, and though a lot of names and movies come flying at you they are easy to access and remember. So if you know nothing about documentaries you can quickly become knowledgeable by reading this book and then know what films you should seek after. The book traces non-fiction films all the way from the early experiments of Muybridge and the actualities of Lumiere all the way up to the 1990s. It divides the films not by region but by their respective genre and in the order they emerged. Then in the final chapter, "Movement," it carries documentaries up into our days and explains what's going on and where it's headed. Again, though you wished Barnouw could have delved even deeper into certain aspects, or become more localized as this is mostly a globalized look, you realize that this book is only the stepping stone into a whole new world. Barnouw is merely opening the door and inviting us to enter.

5 out of 5 stars This is it!.......2000-06-24

Barnbouw has taken a wealth of creativity and almost a century of filmmaking and not only made it manageable but intensely relevant and interesting, His breakdown of the various movements throughout the history of the documentary film is right on and remarkable. The research included in this masterpiece is unmatchable in other writings on the documentary. Filmmakers and non-filmakers alike need to read this book. It is a history lesson on a all too often over looked art.

5 out of 5 stars The essential text on documentary cinema.......1999-07-20

Not only is this a wonderful documentary film history text, it is also extremely well-written. Barnouw is a wonderful storyteller and knows his subject perhaps better than anyone.

    Book Description

Documentary productions encompass remarkable representations of surprising realities. How do documentaries achieve their ends? What types of documentaries are there? What factors are implicated in their production? Such questions animate this engaging study. Documentary Screens provides a comprehensive and critical introduction to the formal features and histories of central categories of documentary film and television. Among the categories examined are autobiographical, indigenous and ethnographic documentary, compilation films, direct cinema and cinema verite and television documentary journalism. The book also considers recent so-called popular factual entertainment and the future of documentary film, television and new media. This provocative and accessible analysis situates wide-ranging examples from each category within the larger material forces which impact on documentary form and content. The important connection between form, content, and context explored in the book constitutes a new and lively "documentary studies" approach to documentary representation.

      Book Description

Forward Soviet! is the first comprehensive account of Soviet documentary output during the years between the "Great October Socialist Revolution" and the "Great Patriotic War." Drawing on previously closed State archives, Graeme Roberts re-views the great examples of Soviet and world non-fiction cinema and uncovers many fine and intriguing little-known films. He discusses the careers of men and women who made them, including Vertov, Shub, Medvedkin and Karmen and investigates the problems of analysis and context, while offering valuable insights into that context. Forward Soviet! is a powerful demonstration of how the history of Soviet non-fiction film can give insight into the agencies that shaped Soviet history and culture.

                Book Description

Trevor Ponech has written a serious and pathbreaking study of how to define "non-fiction" cinema. Working from the position that no cinematic representation is wholly factual, Ponech argues that what determines whether a film is fiction or non-fiction is the filmmaker's intention. Persuasively defending this unique position, the author provides a philosophically rigorous analysis of the communicative practices of filmmakers.

                    Book Description

The psychological theory of expectation that David Huron proposes in Sweet Anticipation grew out of the author's experimental efforts to understand how music evokes emotions. These efforts evolved into a general theory of expectation that will prove informative to readers interested in cognitive science and evolutionary psychology as well as those interested in music. The book describes a set of psychological mechanisms and illustrates how these mechanisms work in the case of music. All examples of notated music can be heard on the Web.

Huron proposes that emotions evoked by expectation involve five functionally distinct response systems: reaction responses (which engage defensive reflexes); tension responses (where uncertainty leads to stress); prediction responses (which reward accurate prediction); imagination responses (which facilitate deferred gratification); and appraisal responses (which occur after conscious thought is engaged). For real-world events, these five response systems typically produce a complex mixture of feelings. The book identifies some of the aesthetic possibilities afforded by expectation, and shows how common musical devices (such as syncopation, cadence, meter, tonality, and climax) exploit the psychological opportunities. The theory also provides new insights into the physiological psychology of awe, laughter, and spine-tingling chills. Huron traces the psychology of expectations from the patterns of the physical/cultural world through imperfectly learned heuristics used to predict that world to the phenomenal qualia we experienced as we apprehend the world.

5 out of 5 stars Music and Surprise.......2007-09-19

Finally, a real five-star book about music. For some reason, there are thousands of books about language, but almost no serious ones analyzing the biology and psychology of humanity's other communication systesms. Every society has a highly developed musical tradition, every society uses music in countless ways including the most sacred religious ceremonies, and yet hardly anyone has stepped forward to analyze it as a basic communication channel for humans.
David Huron's book is on surprise in music. He shows how music creates expectations of pattern, from simple rhythm up to very complex patterns (the concerto, the symphony...) that only sophisticated listeners know. Musicians notoriously love to play with these patterns, to surprise the listeners and thus create new pieces and prevent boredom. Huron distinguishes several types of surprise, on the basis of a highly sophisticated evolutionary and cognitive psychology as well as an astounding knowledge of music. He knows everything from the complexities of Beethoven and Schoenberg to the joik songs of the Saami of arctic Europe, and even knows what happens when you play the latter to rural folk in southern Africa. By contrast, such earlier works as Robert Jourdain's MUSIC, THE BRAIN AND ECSTASY were greatly limited by confining their attention to western classical and classical-derived pop forms, thus missing everything from cross-rhythms to alternative scales.
Surprise presupposes a whole file of knowledge of patterns and schemas, and a deep cognitive and emotional investment in same. Huron takes these mostly for granted. Obviously, the next step is to figure out why people love complicated musical patterns in the first place. Especially, humans love the theme-and-variation type of play with patterns that dominates music from Elizabethan lute solos to jazz to ragas. These are not exactly surprising, especially when you know the pieces, but they are always delightful. Why? Huron mentions body rhythms, speech rhythms, and the like. There is obviously more. I think there is much more about pattern--in music and in general--that we need to study.

I really like this book, but I don't think I'm qualified to review it. However, I think you can get a sense of whether you might be interested in it by reading the list of chapter titles and some of the subtitles and descriptions of some of the tables (T) and figures (F), so here's that:

                    4 out of 5 stars President error.......2004-07-20

There seems to be a lot of discrepancy regarding the 1st president born in the twentieth century. Even the other reviewers were sort of inaccurate and nonspecific. JFK was the first man to become president who was born in the 20th century (1917). However, the president who was FIRST BORN in the 20th century was LBJ (NOT REAGAN)in 1908. It depends on how the question is asked. This is a lot like the question "Who was the youngest president?" Most people think it is JFK, but it is actually Teddy Roosevelt who took office (after McKinley's assassination) at the age of 42. JFK was the youngest man to take office who was ELECTED president.

I haven't actually ready the book, but Ronald Reagan was the first president born in the 20th century, in 1911.

4 out of 5 stars Speaking from Experience - This Book Helps!.......2000-01-26

I recently had the pleasure of becoming a five-time Jeopardy champion, and Mike Dupee's book helped in getting me to that position. I would echo many sentiments expressed by other reviewers. The "Learning the Facts" portion is not as useful as the rest of the book, as it gets bogged down in details and contains a few errors. However, it does have some useful tables, such as those for prominent dancers, artists and their identifiers, and major inventors/discoverers.

The real value of the book is in its discussion of the background information about the show. Mike's descriptions of the testing process and the day of taping are on target.

The book's analysis of the buzzer mechanism proved to be helpful. Although I found I couldn't prepare in advance for my buzzer technique, it was helpful to read about how you have to wait until someone offstage "opens the lines" for you to ring in and answer. At the same time, Mike was absolutely correct in saying you can't wait to see the lights around the board before you buzz. Keeping these ideas in mind, I came up with a method of timing the buzzer which worked more often than not.

Ultimately the section on betting strategy may have been the most valuable for me (although there is a math error noted by other reviewers). In my second game, I was in second place heading into Final Jeopardy and missed the question, yet I still won. Mike's discussion of the "two thirds rule" was foremost in my mind as I made my wager. Rather than betting everything, as so many 2nd and 3rd place players needlessly do, I made a smart wager which maximized my chances to win, and fortune was on my side.

Another reviewer felt that studying did not help her when she competed. However, I would agree with Mike in advising contestants to study. In each of my five games, I had at least one occasion when I buzzed in and responded based on something I learned in my studying process. This happened four times in my fifth game. "The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy," by E.D. Hirsch, Joseph Kett, and James Trefil, was a godsend for me. The New York Public Library's Desk Reference Book was also very helpful.

In conclusion, "How to Get on Jeopardy!... and Win" is a valuable resource for any potential contestants. It is best used in conjunction with other books which are better study material sources.

3 out of 5 stars Worth the purchase, but could have been better..........1999-12-21

I had very high hopes when I first purchased this book and Dupee's concept is great. He has some very good strategies and some good tips in re the show. If he'd have stuck to this for the entire book I'd have given four to five stars. However the second half of the book focuses on trivia and gives an idea of what to brush up on before you become a contestant. This is where I was the most disappointed. The editing is haphazard and it seems like the book jumps back and forth between chapters. Also a section which listed Famous African-americans in alphabetical order stops at H - seemingly an editorial glitch that wasn't picked up. If you're going to be on the show I recommend it although it is not a "must".

3 out of 5 stars Worth a read but not the definitive Jeopardy book.......1999-12-18

I just appeared on Jeopardy earlier this week - actually, I taped this week and will appear the week of March 13-17, 2000. I read the book before I went onto the show (but after I had been to the tryout, passed the test, and received 'the call' to appear on the show).

I definitely recommend that you read the first half of the book about tryouts, betting strategy etc. His betting strategy is excellent (although another reviewer pointed out some math errors), and he seems to be ahead of the curve. After I read his advice on betting and before I went on the show, I watched several weeks worth of games and noticed many - MANY - times where the person who placed second or third would have actually won the game using Dupee's strategy.

However, the second half of the book (trivia) is useless for at least two reasons. First, if you memorized every piece of trivia in this book it would not help you on an actual game very much if at all and it probably would not help you on a tryout. He also skips over a major category - religion - which surprised me, and he spends far too much time on food. Second, the book is typeset in such a way that the answer to each question appears immediately after the question but NOT on a separate line. Therefore if you are trying to read the question and formulate an answer before you see the actual answer, it is almost impossible to do so, rendering this section of the book almost useless for solo studying (although you could have someone read you the questions and then respond aloud). And, as other reviewers have noted, there are numerous factual errors in the book. For example, the first President born in the 20th century - in 1917 - was not Jimmy Carter, it was JFK.

I did study a lot for Jeopardy and there was only one question in my game that my studying prepared me for, and I couldn't recall the information fast enough to ring in and get credit. Several former Jeopardy contestants whom I've met, includng a 5 time champion, advised me not to study. I ignored their advice, but I think it turned out that they were right.

In this book there is one mis-statement so huge I must comment about it, and pardon me for shouting - YOU DO NOT HAVE A FEW EXTRA SECONDS IN THE ACTUAL GAME TO ANSWER EACH QUESTION AS HE STATES - the actual game is as fast-paced in the studio as it seems at home, in fact it seems faster. It is taped in real time so you also have very short commercial breaks.

Finally, if I can give any advice to those of you who are trying out for Jeopardy! (and why would you read this book if you weren't?), I would say that in order to get a tryout, you can take your chances with getting a slot at a regional tryout - which is very iffy - or you can make an appointment and travel to LA where you will be CERTAIN to get a tryout. In order to stand out at the tryout, first you have to pass the test (35 out of 50 right on a written test at the $800 question level), then have a funny story ready for the interview portion, be relaxed, look like you're having fun, and keep the pace moving when you play a mock game. The contestant coordinators like that (BTW, they are VERY nice). Don't appear too intense, either! My impression is that they would love to move away from the professional white male contestant from Southern California - although they don't ever say that - so I'm guessing it would help to be blue-collar, ethnic, female, and not from California! Not that you can change any of those characteristics, so this is just an observation, not advice!

And finally, when you get on the show the single most important factor that will determine whether you win or not (aside from your knowledge of trivia and your ability to recall it instantly) is your signalling button technique. This is huge - HUGE - H-U-G-E! I have met a five time winner who practiced at home with a highlighter pen by pressing the end of it, and this person was killer on the signalling button and not only won 5 games but won them all as runaway games - had them all locked up by final jeopardy.

Because instant recall and signalling button technique are so important, I'd almost recommend that you not cram for Jeopardy - unless you're going to do so now, before you even get a tryout. It's one thing to know something, it's another thing to be able to recall it in a nanosecond, as you must on Jeopardy. If you can't cram trivia to where you can recall it instantly, don't bother to study! (Dupee seems to credit his victory on his studying techniques but I think - as he says people remarked in the book - he was just killer on the signalling button). And one final thing - on the signalling button it's not speed, it's TIMING! Like Goldilocks and the porridge, you can't be too early, or too late, you have to ring in just right. Which I'm here to tell you, is harder than it seems!

                    Hope this helps!

5 out of 5 stars A good network is critical to success - read this book to build a solid one........2007-07-09

Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty is one of the best networking books I have read ("Never Eat Alone" is another great one) and one of the most important books for anyone who wishes to get ahead. Having a solid network of people will do more for your career advancement than almost anything you can do. Harvey Mackay list the top-ten most important things a network can do. Here are a five of those:
                    1) A network replaces the weakness of the individual with the strength of the group
                    2) A network can enrich your life anywhere in the world
                    3) A network can help you help others
                    4) Job security? Don't rely on the corporation. Rely on your network
                    5) A network expands your financial reach infinitely

Mackay goes in great detail on how to build solid networks by adding value to others and keeping in touch. He believes that the most valuable tool in your office is your Rolodex. Harvey Mackay certainly knows what he is talking about, not only does he write books and give speeches, he has built an incredible company, in the envelope business, with over 100 million in annual revenue. He did this by learning EVERYTHING he could possibly know about his clients, not just their order history and size of company, but also the owners favorite sport, team, children's names, ages, spouse's name, where they grew up, what they are passionate about, what they are proud of, etc, etc. In this book he teaches us how to ask for that information, how to maintain the data fresh and how to use it to grow our networks.

My favorite quote from the book is: "No salesperson who knew the names of his customer's kids ever went broke." This is as true as: No person who reads this book and applies its principles will ever go broke. Enjoy!

Harvey Mackay is a master of networking. All of his books stress the importance of professionals focusing on how to make, keep and grow their business relationships.....in this book it the the whole enchillada.

Although I read the book years ago, it is still a wonderful reference for me, now that I speak on the topic. I have learned much from Mr. Mackay, and this book is a must read for anyone who wants to make networking a higher priority.

5 out of 5 stars You will love this book as a networking beginner.......2007-04-30

I have to say, although I have gotten my Ph.D. degree in computer science and have worked around 3 years, I am a beginner in term of networkig (not the computer network). As a beginner, I really love this book because it answers the following questions using real and good stories:

                    1. What is the network.
                    2. Who should be in the network.
                    3. How to meet a new people and make him/her part of your network.
                    4. How to let others to remember you.
                    5. Where to start your networking.
                    6. How to keep your network.

                    I really enjoy it.

Overall pretty good, just a little too much fluff. The book in made up of about a 100 short stories about good and bad networking tips. About 70% is pretty good, while the other 30% is fluff. Still a good read.
