Belongs in every "Mexican" cooking kitchen!.......2007-09-17

As a fan of Chevy's Fresh Mex restaurants, I was surprised to see they'd give away their secret recipes to the public. But it probably increased patronage of the restaurants. A smart move. A great little cookbook. To me, worth it for just three recipes alone -- the "master sauce" Chipotle Puree (that I always make with canned chipotles in adobo, by the way, not dried chilies), the Sweet Chipotle dressing, and the fish tacos. I always keep a jar of that chipotle puree in my frig. Just a tablespoon seasons so many recipes and it keeps for weeks. As expected for most restaurant cookbooks, many recipes are not simple, but require other recipes as "ingredients". The fish tacos is one, but is well worth the effort. As a local cooking teacher where I live, I've taught several classes based on the recipes in this book -- all to raves!

My only complaint with this book has more to do with amazon than this book. The book I received was an earlier edition, not the updated version as shown in the pictures. The recipes are wonderful with beautiful pictures and explanations. It also gives unique ideas for hosting your own Mexican theme celebration.

missing the most important recipe.......2007-01-17

We bought this primarily because we had read that it had the recipe for tortilla soup and also because we hoped that it would have a recipe for their salsa. Unfortunately, it has neither. That being said, it's still a half way decent cookbook, and was pretty cheap.

What I Expected from Chevy's.......2005-09-23

Everything you would want from this very good Tex Mex chain is in this book - including their famous salsa. A good buy, if you're as big a fan as I am.

Good, but much prep........2005-09-04

This is a very good cookbook, but it requires building a pantry full of intersecting recipes/prepared bases vitally important to creating end result dishes in this book. To attempt to do it all from the ground up, virtually at ground zero would take you days to complete an entire/full meal setting. (Something to consider when purchasing this book.)
Conceptually the book is great, the concept being fresh ingredients prepared in a traditional way--but overall preparation is very time consuming, indeed.

Almost Gets the Job Done.......2004-05-14

This was, apart from a few flaws, a very enjoyable book about one of the most enjoyable movies of all time. Wood's pleasure in "Rio Bravo" is apparent on every page. He points out the similarities between "Rio Bravo" and "Only Angels Have Wings" and "To Have and Have Not." He brilliantly demolishes the "High Noon" left wing- "Rio Bravo" right wing dichotomy that so many repeat without thinking. His analysis of key scenes is right on the money.

Yet there are flaws. There is a passage that compares Howard Hawks to Jean Paul Sartre that just didn't work for me. Likewise, Wood's discovery of a gay context between Dude and Colorado failed to convince. However, my biggest gripe is that Wood goes on and on about how Feathers is the most vulnerable and touching of Hawks' heroines, and he never mentions the fact that "Rio Bravo" was co-written by Leigh Brackett, who was a woman! Indeed, Wood seems supremely uninterested in the circumstances of how the film was made, which bothered me. It was as if everything just sprang from Hawks' forehead.

These new editions have many new and interesting stuff that is not included in the original outdated series. It contains many fresh ideas that the authors recently discovered including those old ones. For old ones the original volume has more to say...

Geniuses and Games.......2001-10-19

This book is dazzling. It can be pretty tough going but it is
well worth the effort. You can always tell the work of a genius because it illuminates the landscape and shows us things we have never seen before. I design games for a living and this book rocks! Hackenbush, Nimbers, games with 1/2 move advantage. Well illustrated. ONLY PROBLEM: Where are volumes 2-4?

This is a classic set of books, and greatly improved from the original version. But if you're looking for the old Volume 1, this book will disappoint. The second edition of Winning Ways is split into 4 separately published books. So THIS Volume 1 is just half of the old Volume 1. Be prepared.

Games come in many forms!.......2001-02-24

This is the most difficult collection of puns that I have ever read. Of course, that has something to do with the fact that they are surrounded by some of the most complex mathematical analyses of games that you will find. The types of games that are examined are processes that have the following general structure:

1) There are two players.
2) There are many different positions, with one singled out as the starting position.
3) Players move according to very specific rules.
4) The players move alternately.
5) Both players have complete information.
6) There is no chance element to the play. For example, dice are not involved.
7) The first player unable to move loses the game.
8) The game will always move to a state where a player cannot move, which is an ending condition.

The hardest part of the material is the notation, it is unusual and absolutely necessary to understand the treatment of nearly all the games. However, once you get over that, something that took me a couple of passes, the games become interesting. Some of them turn out to be trivial, although at first reading, that would not be your conclusion.
I also would caution you that this is not recreational mathematics in its base form. These games and problems are nontrivial and most require some serious thought, even when the result is simple. As I read through these games and the mathematical examination of the consequences of playing them, I was struck by two semi-profound thoughts.

1) The human mind can create a game out of just about anything. Some of these games are nothing more than colored marks on paper.
2) Even simple rules can generate complex results. However, mathematical analysis gives us powerful tools that inform us how to win, or as the case may be, how not to lose, or to lose as slowly as possible.

Berklekamp and company have created a classic work that is a must read if you want to understand game-like behavior. While not easy, it is some of the most worthwhile material that you will ever read. I read the first edition several years ago and found the going just as interesting the second time.

Bought for all my students / consultants. Very practical and easy to read - they like it and complements Kepner Tregoe's Lean course

Excellent Book.......2007-03-07

I read many reviews of many different books before deciding to purchase this one. This was really the first book I've read regarding Lean Manufacturing. My background is in computers and electrical engineering so a lot of manufacturing terminology was new to me. If you are a newbie to Lean Manufacturing this seems like a pretty good place to start. Actually, before you read this you should consider reading "The Goal" by Eli Goldratt (which seems to be an industry standard in manufaturing).

For what seems like a pretty dry topic the author did an excellent job keeping it interesting.

Now I have a few things to say when a job interviewer asks what do I know about Lean Manufacturing. I have been out of Mfg. for seven years and I needed to brush up on things. Read other reviews for more in depth data.

In-Depth Look at Lean Value Stream Mapping.......2007-01-04

Mr Carreira discusses Lean and particularly Value Stream Mapping in down to earth how to manner. He gives details and examples that should help everyone in implementing Lean into their organization.

He does an excellent job at showing how 5S and SMED fits within a lean implementation.

If there exists a weakness in this book it may be that very little is discussed on the order entry and finish product packaging and shipping in Value Stream creation.

In general, if you are just beginning to consider Lean or if you have begun lean or have implemented portions of lean and want a great guide in doing it better, this is the book to buy.
