A little disappointed.......2004-04-16
I couldn't wait to read the book, so you can imagine how excited I was when it arrived. I have seen both movies many times, I own them both, and needless to say they are my favorites. I already know the story of Jolson, both the truth, and what the two movies tell us, but I would have loved to learn more about the real star of the two movies, Larry Parks. The problems he and his wife had with the stupid blacklisting, how it affected his wife and two sons. The one real cute thing in the book was when a small girl met the real Jolson in person and said, "Gee Mr. Jolson, you're much better looking in the movie then you are in person." To use the terms the young girls now a days use, I think Larry Parks was a Hottie. I first saw The Jolson Story when I was seven years old, got the biggest crush on Larry Parks, I am now 64 years old, and still swoon when I see him in the two movies. I wonder if Betty Garrett has any idea how much the public loved her husband. It was because of him that Jolson's career got going again.
Long Awaited.......2001-06-25
I just wanted to say that for a long time I have been looking for a book which dealt mainly with The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again. I probably stumbled on it with this book. Although the name implies a book on the blacklisting, I was pleasantly surprised to find alot of pages dedicated to these two films. Don't be fooled by the name. There's much more than the blacklisting.
GOOD BUT NOT GREAT.......2000-04-13
When I got this book, I couldn't wait to pour through the contents. However, I was disappointed in that the book gave too much of a book report on "The Jolson Story" and "Jolson Sings Again", and not enough time to Larry Parks. The book is worth reading, and I did learn some interesting tidbits. However, it did leave me wanting more. Other books may be better, but to a new fan of Al Jolson/Larry Parks it may be more fullfilling than it was to me.
This should be titled "Synopsis of the Jolson Story w/photos.......2000-03-14
This gives woefully little information about the HUA witchhunt and how it impacted on the life and career of Larry Parks. (Read Betty Garrett's bio for that information.) This is a moment by moment synopsis with photos of The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again" with some biographical information on the performers. I love both movies and could have written the synopsis myself. I wanted to learn more about Larry Parks and the disgraceful blacklist period. Also, this is a very short book (minus photos) and is more like a term paper than a serious discussion on the title's topic.
Guess Who Didn't Sing Again........1999-12-22
I could probably add another "star" to the rating of this book if McLelland would make at least one correction. This is really not a review but rather an important comment. Important, at least, to me.
On a back page of "Blackface to Blacklist" is a photo of Saul Silverman. He is credited as having dubbed the cantorial voice for papa Yoelson (Ludwig Donath) in both the Jolson Story and Jolson Sings again. Doug is HALF right. Silverman did the cantorial dubs for Donath in The Jolson Story. In Jolson Sings Again, however, the voice was that of Ray Carnay who was the Cantor at Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills. Since I am the one who did the cantorial vocal I'd like to set the record straight. My Columbia press releases, photo with thanks inscribed by Donath and countless news articles in my files lend credence to my claim. I'd like to get this information to McClelland. The International AL Jolson Society has already received this information and corrections will be made in their archives and future releases.

The Best General Survey of Western Music History Ever Written!.......2006-03-27
I am a doctoral student in conducting and an avid lover of books. I purchase many books each year and am constantly in search of texts that are interesting, well-designed, well-written, and easy to understand. I loathe all books that do not meet these qualifications. Craig Wright and Bryan Simms have written what I believe is the best general survey of western music history EVER! The writing is clear, engaging, and easy to understand. The book is in full color with thousands of maps, examples of art, architecture, pictures of composers, palaces, instruments, etc. The chapters are short and are written in such a way that the material is easily retained. Furthermore, each chapter concludes with an EXCELLENT summary and list of key terms which can be used as a self-test for recall of important facts and concepts. Finally, the book is built around a comprehensive list of pieces spanning all periods in the history of western music. The accompanying scores and CD's are also excellent (though the CD's can be hard to find online). The book also contains an exceptional glossary and an easy-to-use index. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand history of music. It is also exceptional for use as a graduate history review text and I highly recommend it for anyone facing doctoral qualifying or comprehensive exams in history. A beautiful work - well worth the price.

Gives you a simple overview about the investment genius. Great Book, gives you a feel forFinancial Statement Analysis: A Practitioner's Guide, 3rd Edition how the genius handles things.
Decent.......2007-09-15
The book is decent. If you really want to learn about the Buffet Way then there are better books -like "Making of an American capitalistic" and Essays of Buffet. This book tries to abstract the concepts and present them in an easy to read manner.
The reason I give it 3 stars is - after reading "Making of an American.." , I found the information in this book less useful.
Hagstrom does a good job of abstracting though.
Maybe I was expecting too much.......2007-06-14
It's not that this book isn't well written. It is factual and has much historical information. It thoroughly explains the early influences on Warren Buffet and how he has modified his approach over the years. After reading it, I'm not sure I really understand HOW WB decided to bet the farm on Coke or Washington Post, only that he did so. Perhaps it's too much to expect that I can read the book and become a genius investor or even understand how WB did.
Warren Buffet, What Else Can I say?.......2007-05-07
This book is like most books in the sense that it guides the reader through Birkshire Hathaways most important and most lucrative deals ever. The way that this book is different is that the author takes you through the mentality of Warren before, during and after those deals. It shows the reader a pyschological view at Warren's investing style and how we, the regular investor, could incorporate his style into our investing prefrences. Recommend this book to any Warren Buffett fan but not to the most serious and devoted investors out there. If you really want to invest like Warren, buy The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Grahm and Security Analysis by Benjamin Grahm and David Dodd. These books will shoe you exactly how Warren does it and why.
The philosophy of Warren Buffett without getting to technical.......2007-04-19
Warren Buffet is the greatest investor alive today. His track record speaks for itself and this book goes some small way towards explaining the inner workings of this investment genius. A few years ago I passed on buying Buffetology because I thought I wasn't ready for it and now found this book from my best friend Vergal Walton.
The Warren Buffet Way is the most readable book I've come across on investment so far. The essence of this book is summarised in the various chapters of the book. The stories of the companies that Buffet invests in from the earliest days to the most recent are all entertaining and extremely insightful. One of the core underlying principles is to take the long term view of with investments. And when buying shares to think of it as buying a business and behaving in a way that the owner would behave. The Dot com crash was almost a directly result of short term opportunistic investments. And the whole investment philosophy of Buffet rests on theories expounded more than 50 years ago by Benjamin Graham and David Dodd in Security Analysis as well as The Intelligent Investor also by Graham.
Historically Buffet bought sizeable interests in publicly traded companies from the Coca-Cola company to the Gillette company. And more recently he has moved into purchasing privately held companies outright. As he says he is willing to own these businesses forever. That is an exceptional attitude in investment. Hagestrom described Buffet as the focussed investor. Rather investing large sums of money in a smaller number of companies.
The Focus Investor's Golden Rules:
1.Concentrate your investment in outstanding companies run by strong management
2.Limit yourself to the number of companies you can truly understand. Ten to twenty is good, more than twenty is asking for trouble.
3.Pick the very best of your good companies, and put the bulk of your investment there.
4.Think long-term: five to ten years, minimum.
5.Volatility happens. Carry on.
