3 out of 5 stars Books from Blogs.......2007-03-30

Sex books from blogs are the thing of the future. As writers reveal their secrets and put them on the web, it is inevitable that the best of them are turned into books. The two best I've read so far are this one and Abby Lee's Diary of a Sex Fiend: Girl with a One Track Mind. Both are English. Both are sexy. Both are "stimulating" and honest.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, fun, interesting and honest.......2007-03-02

Really one of the books I couldn't stop reading it. No pauses, a continuous 2 days reading. It was very interesting and attractive. Honest and straight, the writer has the ability to present the moment, the most interesting happening, the most notable thought. Initially I did know that it was from a blog. But even when I figured that out, I didn't regret with the book. It was very interesting and far more different from reading a blog from a computer screen. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Clean and Dirty.......2007-01-04

Belle de Jour, the shockingly intimate adventures of a london call girl has, by all accounts, become a cult phenomenon. The blog-slash-diary of an educated woman who resorts to prostitution to pay her bills for want of a regular job in a tough job market is by all accounts shocking, scandalous, candid, honest, voyeristic, and human. Her hunger for sex leads her into an unlikely job role, after facing rejection upon rejection in the real world. In between the sheets she finds acceptance, at first from men, and then for herself, as she becomes comfortable in her own skin with what and who she has become. Explicit and triple x rated she transports us in graphic detail into the world of prostitution and sex, and perfectly illustrates how we as human beings have deteriorated over the centuries. Even in the oldest of professions, new trends are developing in the sexual revolution, as women and men exchange new roles in a modern world, and Belle takes us there for first hand look.
Living in a world that has learned not to show emotion, Belle too has become one of the masses; a numb body going about the motions of life, lacking feeling, lacking real passion and enthusiasm for life, all the while desperately wanting to return to the feeling of "feeling alive." (146) Belle is not familiar with crying, yet she cries....(149) realizing she is "not all that happy"....and despite the pursuit of money and materialism the resultant ephiphany is that her life has led to "nothing significant."
Belle is a girl in a woman's skin - the girl who had a political opinion at age 8 is still the same young innocent girl who is aching for a return to such innocence and unhurried purity of thought. As we see in the following exerpt, Belle craves a cupcake, and the level of excitement is infectious, until we remember it is actually the voice of a woman.
"...and i insisted that we get two fairy cakes from the bakery with pink icing and little plastic hearts pressed into the tops..."(151)
Belle is still the little girl voice hiding in the adult female body - and for all that we know of the dark world of prostitution she inhabits, it is surpising to see her relatively unaffected on the surface by it, seemingly still able to find pleasure and an innocence in the small things and friendships that surround her.
Yet her innocence with cupcakes juxtaposed with her cynical blog about valentines day combined with the explicit nature of her material leads me to believe that while this is an undoubtedly accurate, honest and extremely candid account of her life, there is still something missing. She leaves nothing out which satisfies the voyeur in us; yet something is missing in her fundamental character and her view and interpretation of her world as we realize this is not normal, she is not normal, and most people do not turn to prostitution after a few bad job interviews.
I feel for the little girl trapped behind her sexual mask - she doesn't know how to tap into the identity of her real self without using her sexuality to play as a grown up in the real world. She is at once clean and dirty, eating to live, not living to eat.
The dislocation of the self is a rich topic, beautifully explored in painful detail in this unforgettable memoir. Five stars.

4 out of 5 stars Amusing and clever.......2006-11-10

The book is a hoot, although (unsurprisingly) lots of it comes directly from the author's blog. Nevertheless, it's been passed around to all of my friends and we all enjoyed it. Great for dramatic readings at three in the morning, while drinking sangria. Don't be misled by the alarmingly trashy cover. The author is clever, well-read, and perhaps a bit of a nerd. She just happens to like sex, and get paid for it.

2 out of 5 stars Same as the blog... but fun if you haven't read it........2006-10-07

Ditto another reader's observations on this. If you've been reading along with the blog these past few years - the book is an unfortunate duplicate. Or, I should say, 98% is duplicate, but unfortunately, that extra 2% is rather like the extra two minutes on some director's cut of a movie. Doesn't change the story, doesn't change the book itself, and you really could have kept it out - but guess that's what I get for not looking closely before I bought it.

Aside from that - if you haven't read the blog, the book is fun. Nothing earthshattering, just leisurely and running occasionally to voyeuristic.

Book Description

The startling and groundbreaking novel that inspired Luis Buñuel's film by the same name is finally available once more. In a world that blurs the lines between feminism and female sexuality, Belle de Jour remains as vital and controversial today as it was in its 1960 debut.

Severine Serizy is a wealthy and beautiful Parisian housewife. She loves her husband, but she cannot share physical intimacy with him, and her vivid sadomasochistic fantasies drive her to seek employment at a brothel. By day, she enacts her customers' wildest fantasies under the pseudonym "Belle de Jour"; in the evenings, she returns home to her chaste marriage and oblivious husband. Famous for its unflinching eroticism, Joseph Kessel's novel continues to offer an eye-opening glance into a unique female psyche.

4 out of 5 stars Un roman sur l'amour.......2004-08-06

3 out of 5 stars Probably Controversial When First Published (even in France).......2000-11-01

I read this book in French (a language I'm imperfect in) several years ago. Written in the '30s,the story of a bourgeoise deliberately entering a part-time life of prostitution was probably daring for its time, even in blasé France. The Buñuel film gives a religious (i.e. repressive) reason as clue to Severine's entry into prostitution, and a brief shot of herself being molested when young. The former would follow Bunuel's anti clerical atheism. The book, however, is more explicit (though brief) in describing Severine's being molested, and this is certainly one reason why any female might enter that life. She might also have had a "naughty" streak untended by her caring husband. The style of the book is simple but skilled, characters such as the criminals Severine becomes involved with through her new surroundings believable. (In Bunuel's film the main "heavy" is Spanish, in the book not). All said, an interesting, well-told twist on an old profession.

      Book Description

Severine (Catherine Deneuve) is a listless haute bourgeouise wife with a secret afternoon life of prostitution. Her life twists repression and guilt together with uninhibited behaviour, strangled libido with its liberated counterpart.

Luis Bunuel was catapulted into cinematic history by his groundbreaking Dali collaboration, Un Chien Andalou, in 1929, but it is Belle de Jour (1967) which inaugurates the extraordinary late phase of his work. It is a film shimmering with reflections on truth, fiction and fantasy, in addition to caustic social insight, as it tells the story of a woman clearing her mind, perhaps, of its ghosts.

      4 out of 5 stars Ambiguous.......2007-09-13

The movie Belle de Jour is a treat for anyone who has not yet seen it. Catherine Deneuve, always easy on the eyeballs, is wonderful in her portrayal of Severine, the Parisian housewife whose frigid sexuality towards her husband is matched by the inferno of her fantasy life. These fantasies of abuse and degradation come to life when Severine takes a day job at a brothel, taking whatever man comes her way.

Michael Wood's analysis of the film in this BFI monograph is generally up to the task of enlightening the viewer about some important aspects of the movie. There are clearly several sequences that are not taking place within the real world of the characters, being instead Severine's fantasies or memories. Wood asks whether these fantasy sequences are actually more numerous than we thought. He provides evidence that many of the scenes the viewer takes as real may be something quite else altogether.

Wood ties the movie's ambiguity nicely into its director's personal vision. Luis Bunuel was a Surrealist whose movies often shifted the focus of how we see the world, creating a vision recognizable enough as our own but with a focus just slightly off to make us question our assumptions. Bunuel applies this theory to the comfortable middle class aspirations of 1960s Parisians, still close enough to our own modern day world to hit close to the mark. Just how well do we know what goes on in the heads of the normal couple next door?

Wood's analysis unfortunately starts to fall apart in the final chapter of BELLE DE JOUR, in which he discusses Bunuel's later works. It simply is not as coherent as the rest of the book. The chapter is short, though, and its deficiencies easily forgiven in the context of a useful book about a classic movie.

5 out of 5 stars Bunuel needs a mind as open as his - Michael Wood has it........2002-03-21

Michael Wood, the most elegant and enquiring literary critic of his generation, has also written widely on film. He is the author of books on Stendhal and Nabokov, and is currently writing a study of Proust. In other words, he is familiar and comfortable with Cultural Giants in a way most film critics and academics are not. This allows him to speculate and make seemingly random or wild connections on his subject with a confidence most film writers, slaves to theory and discipline, lack. This makes him the perfect interpreter of Bunuel, who needs such a suggestive approach, and whose critical star has fallen in the last two decades precisely because his work doesn't fit neat frameworks.

'Belle De Jour' - the story of frigid doctor's wife Severine, who loves her husband but can only find sexual fulfilment working by day in a brothel - inaugurates the period known as 'late Bunuel', when the old Surrealist had access to bigger budgets, big stars and glossy colour. Because these films lack the abrasive iconoclasm of his most characteristic work, they are usually described as 'serene', 'mellow', repentant; Pauline Kael suggests they attain the 'path to grace'. Wood argues 'both Severine and the film hide the world behind an image of the world. We only see what they see or show; but we know it's not all there is. There is a serenity in 'Belle De Jour' and in all of Bunuel's late films, but it is not his. It is the false and fragile serenity of the society he pictures'.

Wood suggests some of the ways Bunuel achieves this, in a gorgeously written study. He delineates the depth, subtleties and strategies of Bunuel's seemingly brusque and plain style. He discusses the brilliant actors - notably Catherine Deneuve, Michel Piccoli and Genevieve Page - and the importance of their screen personae to their roles. He shows how literally faithful Bunuel is to his source, Joseph Kessel's novel of the same name, and how radically he departs from its assumptions and form, transforming a traditionally psychological novel into an anti-character anti-narrative. The most brilliant section analyses the status of dreams, fantasies and memories in the film, and whether they displace the 'reality' of the film's fictional world, showing how Bunuel could claim to despise psychology (as a way of explaining the apparently accidental processes of the mind) and yet be devoted to Freud (as discoverer of the unconscious, 'one of the favourite playgrounds of accident'). He suggests that Bunuel replaces the reductive closure of a definitive resolution with a simultaneity of possible or alternative endings.

Readers will get the most out of the monograph if they have the film handy. Wood looks at the major sequences in some depth (the opening landau fantasy; the shoes-on-staircase hesitation outside the bordello; the burly Asian with the humming box; the central sequence in the Duc's chateau; all of Husson's scenes; the enigmatic concluding five minutes). He focuses on pertinent, missable details, attending to nuance, repetition and variation. Not only do you get a more profound understanding of the film, but Bunuel's method, as stubbornly withheld as his heroine's inner life, opens bit by bit. You become so focused on each scene, you notice things Wood left out, or didn't underline. It's a rare director or critic that empowers his audience with the tools to answer back. Bunuel and Wood are less interested in interpreting a world, a film, a book or a character, than the very act of interpretation itself.

                  Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

"Easy guide to the Dragon" and "The Sicilian Sozin" were the first two books written by Grandmaster Golubev. Packed with lots of original analysis, they are just excellent and outstanding. This time, he turns to another favourite opening of his: the King's Indian. Using 56 model games played by Golubev himself, he gives lots of repertoire-recommendations for the second player.

I have to admit that my expectations were great, probably because of those works mentioned above. And for some reason, I felt a bit disappointed when the book finally arrived. Why that? First of all there is no list of literature in the book. This is a pity as Golubev cites analysis from Gallagher here and
there and I guess there are others, too. Secondly, I doubt if it was such a good idea to only use games of his own as maingames. The problem is that when a variation appeared less often
in Golubevs practice, his treatment of it falls somewhat short. This is the case regarding 5. Bd3 and 5. Nge2. For a closer look on those, please check the belonging titles from Watson, Panczyk and Forintos.

This is especially obvious in case of the variation 5. h3 followed by 6. Nf3. Neither Redjepagic-Golubev, Bosch-Golubev nor Golubev-Kochetkov really deal with the critical lines. Instead, in the first two examples the first players each fail to play the strongest and known continuations, in the third it is
quite the same. Thus, commenting on the critical line b3 on page 96 Golubev "succeeds" in escaping with the comment "with chances for both sides". Here we are talking about an absolute standard-position from the h3-King's Indian, with move eleven just being made. First players equipped with the excellent Chessbase CD-ROM "King's Indian with h3" from Breutigam and the belonging Krasenkov-games surely have a big advantage - they know the
resulting middlegame-plans for both sides which is always of great importance. Consulting Watson's "The unconventional King's Indians" or Gallagher's "Play the King's Indian" is strongly recommended in this case. It is quite the same with Golubev's second recommendation against the Sämisch which is 6. Be3 c5. There is just no analysis of 7. d5 at all and only a short note
of 7. Nge2 while both of them are played regularly and important to know. Gallagher is much more complete here, too. But luckily, those flaws make just about a tenth of the whole book.

Apart from this, Golubev shines in style: the well known Gambit-presentation is clear and well laid out. In most of the cases, Golubev even gives two or more recommendations against the most popular white lines and his strategical explanations can be called good to outstanding. His repertoire-recommendations are well-chosen, especially against the Classical and the Averbakh-System, the Four Pawns Attack and the Fianchetto-variation. You can sense Golubevs great expertise in the King's Indian in every line of the book and he makes a strong case for the black pieces. So in spite of the minor critic above, you can really take a lot out of this book. And in the end, we all have to build
our repertoires on our own, anyway.

To cut a long story short: 4 stars for quite a good and honest book containing lots of original analysis. Perhaps, Golubev could have treated some of the sidelines in more detail as he actually did. But the brilliant and to-the-point-explanations help very much to grasp the dynamics of the King's Indian
Defence - and thus the title naturally keeps what it promises.

This is the most effective leadership book I have ever read. It is straightforward and real. It contains all of the information that leaders know, but don't want to hear. What is significant, is the title. It's not titled, "Listen Up, Manager." It's "Listen Up, Leader." Leaders must influence, engage, and enroll employees. Managers complete tasks and oversee. This book provides all of the employee thoughts and whispers that you may not hear. The content is invaluable and timeless. Everyone in leadership needs to read it. Ten times better than "Who Moved My Cheese?"
