Delightful Trip Down Memory Lane.......2006-05-20
A beautiful collection of women who are also beautiful but basically not nice people. They tend to carry guns, knives of bottles of poison. On the other hand, they tend to show a lot of skin and to put the men around them into all kinds of trouble.
The surprising thing is just how many actresses have played the heavy in films. Here's Tina Louise (Ginger in Gilligan's Island) in a skimpy toga at the 'Siege of Syracuse.' Here's Lynda Carter in a Bonnie & Clyde like movie before she turned in her gun to be Wonder Woman.
And of course there's Angie Dickinson, the queen perhaps of the bad girl in fifty or more western, gangster, and otherwise bad girl films. The keynote of the book, perhaps is an excerpt of an interview with her that was conducted on June 8, 2004. In this she discusses her career and a number of the films she was in.
All in all, a bit of nostalgia here to realize just how many of these things I've seen.

This book is an excellent addition to the original Sibelius manual. The original manual that comes with Sibelius is extremely well written and is very effective at explaining the software. The authors do not try to replace, but to clarify the Sibelius manual and add additional shortcuts and illustrations to help all Sibelius users more quickly learn how to use the software.

As a new user of Sibelius and someone who is not real computer savy, I was so happy to hear about this book!! It was the only real comprehensive guide that I've found, and it has done wonders!!! It makes using the program not only easy, but fun! I bought this program so I could get my creative ideas down on paper and now I can! I highly recommend this book for any Sibelius user!!!

Dover Score of Sibelius 5th Symphony.......2006-12-12
Nice score from Dover. There are some minor corrections made in latest Hansen scores (this is a reprint from first Hansen print), so it is recommended to check them out. More of that I wait for new complete edition, the blue one to come out after copyright issues are over in Europe. The new edition of Sibelius 2nd and Kullervo-Symphony already exists and is highly recommended, although very expensive in big format (the study score of 2nd has just come out as well).

A Must-have Book for Sibelians!!!.......2007-09-23
David Hurwitz's book on the orchestral works of composer Jean Sibelius is definitely a must-have for anyone doing extensive research on Sibelius's music.
This book offers a highly detailed analysis on all of Sibelius's symphonies, tone poems and shorter works and puts these works under the microscope so-to-speak. Granted, after reading this book, you'll probably never listen to a Sibelius piece the same way again.
Additionally, the book comes with two audio CDs. One is nearly 80-minutes worth of highlights from Sibelius's masterworks including the third and seventh symphonies heard in their entirety. The second disc is a compilation of music from various Finnish composers who have followed in Sibelius's footsteps. Brief bios of these composers are spread throughout the book as well.
Mr. Hurwitz has definitely performed his research well in writing this book. I personally have never read such an analysis on Sibelius's music that cuts right down to the most minute detail until this book was released. It's about time too.
Definitely a must-have for die-hard Sibelians!!!

Gigantic Book for a Tiny Market.......2007-05-12
When I call the book Gigantic, I'm not referring to its physical size, which is quite modest. I'm talking about its intent and accomplishment.
Writing about classical music is difficult. Much of the terminology is unfamiliar to most readers, and there's always the temptation to go in one of two unwelcome directions: either over-popularizing the subject or being dry and academic. The effective path lies along a fine line between those two extremes, and David Hurwitz walks that line beautifully. I'm so impressed by this treatise on Sibelius that I'm going to immediately start collecting the rest of his similar books on Dvorak, Mahler, Haydn, and anybody else he's covered that I don't know about yet.
Although the market for a book like this one must be incredibly narrow, Mr. Hurwitz has waxed expansive and entertaining. His insights into the composition techniques employed by the Finnish master are unparalleled. The illustrative samples on the two included CDs are both wisely chosen and luminously recorded-- bravo!
I should probably explain that I consider myself somewhat of an expert on Sibelius and his music, having studied both the composer and his output for well more than fifty years. David Hurwitz, who is considerably younger than I am, has nevertheless studied these subject even more deeply than I have, and his analyses and evaluations ring absolutely true. From now on, when people ask me about Sibelius, I will quote Hurwitz rather than myself!
For anyone familiar with the jargon of classical music essays and with an interest in the subject, this book is a godsend. I had high expectations for it, and it exceeded them.

I have some of the other books from this Unlocking the Masters series, and they are WONDERFUL!!! Not only are they factual and informative, but they are easy to read and really show you what to look/listen for in the music! It comes with a CD which has musical examples of pieces that are talked about in the book! This book is a wonderful tool for any student!

For a Dover score, this is standard. You get what you pay for--it's a reprint, which means the quality is only as good as the original was. For a student like me, it works very well as a study score. If you want to be picky, it is a pain to have to remember which line is which instrument (and what key the instruments are in, e.g. Trumpet in F in #1) since the instruments are only given on the first page of each movement (with a few exceptions throughout the score).

These two symphonies are the greatest of a modern composer. They are deep, emotional, and very melodic.

bad printing makes 1st movement unreadable.......2006-05-03
I don't what gremlin invaded the printing plant, but the first signature is overinked or overprinted in such a way that pages appear almost transparent, so that runs of eighth notes on a verso appear on the recto and vice versa. It's only the first sig, so you get used to it, but it's a serious defect and presumably would make for some tough orchestral harmonies if you actually had to play it this way.

disappointed, flimsy.......2007-01-24
I was disappointed with this book - it's more of an "optical illusion" kit with a little book inside of the kit. There are examples of optical illusions - but the book itself is small and you'll find bigger more comprehensive books elsewhere (e.g. Al Seckel). There are also some 3-D images and 3-D glasses but the pics were very marginal - i've seen much better. Then there are some other plastic and cardboard odds and ends to attempt your own illusions - but all these "spare parts" look flimsy and look like items will be easily lost, broken, or not perform adequately. I had hoped to use this for a Kindergarten class but there is no way it would hold up to young children. I was much more pleased with the quality of a book by Al Seckel and would encourage others to check his books out instead.

According to this definition, Mr. Duncan is a good politician and he probably should run for office.
This is a second edition of the book. First edition was written sometime around 2001-2002 and was predicting imminent collapse of the dollar and post-dot-com-bust recession turning into major depression.
As we all know, that didn't happen. Instead of going into the ground, U.S. economy started a gradual trek upwards, partly due to real estate boom brought about by low interest rates, partly due to ingenious fiscal and monetary policy of Washington DC and support from national banks of China and Japan.
By 2005, Mr. Duncan felt compelled to write a new edition of his book, this time adding passages about real estate bubble and a whole new section describing developments since 2002 - in essence, explaining why predictions of 1st edition haven't come true yet.
Jokes aside, this is a solid book and it's highly recommended to any serious reader. A warning, though - it's not a popular book, and it's not meant for light reading - it leans towards scientific style, so it may seem dry and hard to read, especially to someone without basic knowledge of macroeconomics.
Mr Duncan Knows Nothing.......2007-04-21
What the cheeky Mr Duncan fails to grasp is that the Chinese and Japanese love collecting dollars, much like Americans love collecting baseball cards. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to subsidize the rest of the world via minimum wage and universal fiat. As long as Mr Paulson makes frequent trips to China to make sure they're working hard and behaving themselves in the factories there's nothing to worry about.
Furthermore, his "analysis" rests flimsily on the work of the so called economists Ludwig von Mises and clever clogs Jacques Rueff. No wonder he is so confused.

This book is very tedious and wont give you the answers that you are looking for if you are wondering about the current economic situation in the world today. Great for book worms and economics fans, but not for the average person. Too many charts and graphs; almost every other page has a chart. I recommend "Petrodollar Warfare" as a great book to start with if you want to understand how the US got into the economic mess it is in.

Overall I think the message of the coming disaster for the US and possibly world economy is critical to read and understand. This book woke me up to realize it is time to pay attention and be prepared for the value of our "dollars" to drop fast.
MUCH too MUCH numbers and "jargon" that I happen to be unfamiliar with but I was able to get the overall message.
