Nicely done..........2005-03-30

The author seems to have done scrupulous research, particularly with regard to Hepburn's early years. However, this bio contains more conjecture and fewer direct quotes from Hepburn "insiders" than the Barry Paris book. It also goes into more detail about her early career, her parent's fascist connections, and her relationships with her costars and husbands. Curiously, her adult relationship with her mother is largely ignored by the author.

It's entirely possible that Walker had less cooperation from Hepburn's friends, family and associates, because this book is somewhat less flattering than the Barry Paris bio. For example, Walker makes no bones (bad pun) about her alleged off and on battle with anorexia, while Paris blows the rumors off.

The author makes one egregious ommission; he fails to note Hepburn's last work, the superb Gardens of the World series for PBS. He notes only a "coffee table book" by that title for which he says Hepburn wrote the text. As she did not write the script for the series, it's unlikely that she would have written the text for any companion book. Gardens of the World does not even appear in the book's index! For credibility's sake, Walker really should correct this error in any future editions.
Nevertheless, all in all this is a satisfying read for any fan of Audrey Hepburn.

I'd recommend reading both books to get a more balanced view of this great lady.

From Audrey's facinating childhood and tragic war experience and her sad rejection in dance, to her fabulous movie career and multiple marriages, we find that stars always confuse us with the images that they portray on the screen. Not that Audrey was a bad person, just different from what you would think her as. Whatever she may have been, she had a wonderful and strong personality and a dear, giving heart. A wonderful telling of her life which I recommend for biography readers everywhere.

I ordered this since my sister received it and thought it was a great book. Unfortunately, this copy does not come with the answers. Look for the hard cover version, that has the answers in the back.

This book is as intriguing and entertaining was it was 25+ years ago when I read it to my children. As an educator, I discovered this book to be a source of entertainment and challenge to my children as well as a wonderful tool to help my students as they struggle with reading skills. I recently purchased it again for my grandchildren since my copy was misplaced over the years...and they love it as their mother when she was their age.
Buy it and use...it will help dust off the gray matter and delay alzehemier. :)

smart! adorable! unexpected! (the book, not my kids...)
This book really has us rolling in laughter. My sons (ages 4 and 6) and I have been playing with an electronic toy: push a letter and the thing says the letter's name. We had been using it to make word sounds -- pressing U R A Q T for "you are a cutie" and so forth. When I saw this book I just had to get it. It is amazingly clever -- and to think it was written in 1968. It's fresh, not at all dated. My sons are very good readers for their respective ages, but it is definitely appropriate for them. I had to explain a phrase or two (they didn't know the word "ecstacy" when they saw X-T-C) but otherwise it was totally on their level. I still crack up reading it, and I've read it at least ten times. The watercolor illustrations are perfect. Stieg conveys a lot of emotion and expression with just a few brush strokes. When a boy sees someone with a lollipop and tells him "I N-V U," you can see the envy.
I won't mind if my kids want to read this one again and again. I M N X-T-C 2!

taught me how to read.......2003-08-04

This book helped me learn to read when i was 3 years old. As long as you know the alphabet you can read this book, which makes it perfect for children who are learning to read.

I remembered this book from my elementary school library, and was delighted to find that it had been reprinted. This book is meant to be read out loud and deciphered - our children ages 16 down to 6 were entertained, as were the adults in the house too. This book is just plain fun.

The female rabbit is an exceptional experimental model to define mechanisms by which progesterone (P) controls the expression of reproductive behaviors. In the rabbit, the rise in P levels during pregnancy inhibits estrous scent marking (''chinning''), stimulates the excavation of a nest burrow (''digging''), and primes behaviors later used for nest construction. The pre-parturient fall of P triggers the construction of a straw nest (''straw carrying'') that is lined with hair that she pulls from her own body (''hair pulling''). These behaviors can be replicated in ovariectomized (ovx) females given a schedule of estradiol (E) and P that mimics hormone levels during pregnancy (E from days 0 to 4, E + P from days 5 to 17, E from days 18 to 27). We administered PR antagonists RU486 or CDB(VA)2914 to ovx female rabbits during either the initial (days 5-11) or late (days 12-17) phases of P treatment, to determine the role of PR activation in coordinating the expression of these behaviors. Both antiprogestins attenuated the P-mediated decline in chinning and increase in digging when administered during days 5-11. When given across days 12-17, both antiprogestins triggered an early decline in digging, the onset of nest building in some Ss, and the reinstatement of chinning. These results point to a central role of PR activation for establishing and maintaining the behavioral phenotype of pregnancy, and for the behavioral transition from pregnancy to estrus.

Easy to use and multiple learning methods.......2006-11-27

I used this textbook for a Macroecon class in college and it has got to be one of the best textbooks I've ever used. Not only is the textbook itself well written and easily explains complex theories, but it also comes with a DVD and online component. The online DiscoverEcon site gives you access to self-quizzes and further examples to help study. The DVD is basically lectures done in an easy to follow and entertaining (as entertaining as economics can be anyway) format.

I hope that my professor in my Microeconomics class uses the textbook from the same author.

Avoid if you can.......2006-03-27

I think this is one of the worst textbooks I've ever read. It uses 14 different sentences to say the same thing, and makes basic concepts seem complicated by overstating/analyzing them. This book could be significantly shorter...maybe the author was getting paid by the word?
If you have any choice of textbooks for macroeconomics class, I recommend you choose one other than this. If you're the professor of the class, I beg you to not make your students endure this book. :) Thank you.

Economics made interesting - how about that?.......2005-09-19

I've never before been interested in economics, so what do I know about econ text books? Not much. But I know a good text book when I use one, and this is a very good one. It is well written and easy to follow. It makes an otherwise dull subject both learnable and enjoyable. Yes, even interesting. It is also very up-to-date, with some very current examples that really resonate with the 21st Century Economics student. All in all - first rate!
