    Book Description

Mythologies offers illuminating examples of the workings of myth in the structure of societies past and present—how we create, use, and are guided by systems of myth to answer fundamental questions about ourselves and our world.

Almost all of Mythologies, originally published as a two-volume cloth set, is now available in four paperback volumes. These volumes reproduce the articles, introductory essays, and illustrations as they appeared in the full Mythologies set, and each includes a new Preface by Wendy Doniger.

This volume gathers eighty articles on mythologies from around the world. A section on the Americas and the South Pacific covers myths of native Americans, from the Inuit to the Mesoamericans, about such topics as the cosmos, fire, and the creation of the world. Essays on African mythology range from the 266 basic signs of West Africa to themes such as twins, the placenta, and masks. The final section, covering Celtic, Norse, and Slavic traditions opens with an overview of the Indo-Europeans and concludes with an essay on the religion and myths of Armenia.

There's no Zeus with his thunderbolt or Thor with his hammer; but in Harold Scheub's A Dictionary of African Mythology, there is Kibuka, who shoots arrows from clouds, and Tanit, mother of the universe, with her spear. From over 10 years of living in Africa, Harold Scheub has combed oral and recorded traditions to deliver a treasury of African mythology. Scheub focuses on the art of the storyteller, presenting stories that animate the peoples that tell them. You'll find the full range of archetypal figures here and see how mythic scenarios can vary from region to region. There are the rain-stones from God; the crocodile women; and Wuni, the god who destined men to always have to chase women. Scheub ties the stories together by locating common themes and provides an immense bibliography, along with cross-referencing by culture and country. Africa is not often on our mythology radar, but Scheub demonstrates that the continent's traditions are every bit as colorful and transformative as the myths of other world cultures. --Brian Bruya

        Book Description

In this marvelous collection of hundreds of fascinating, mysterious, and revealing tales, Harold Scheub captures the immense sweep and diversity of African mythology. Scheub offers an unprecedented collection of 400 stories, arranged alphabetically, that touch on virtually every aspect of religious belief. Here are gods and goddesses, epic heroes and divine tricksters, along with epics of the world's origins, the struggle between the human and the divine, and much more. Scheub covers the entire continent, from the mouth of the Nile to the shores of the Cape of Good Hope, including North African as well as sub-Saharan cultures. Here, for example, is the tale of Abu Zayd (from the Bani Hilal of Tunisia), an epic hero who battles a jinni; and here too is a myth of how the moon and the toad created the first man and woman, from the Soko of Congo. Scheub not only retells each story, but provides information about the respective belief system, the main characters, and related stories or variants. Perhaps most important, Scheub emphasizes the role of mythmaker as storyteller--as a performer for an audience. He explores various techniques, from the rhythmic movements of a Zulu mythmaker's hands to the way a storyteller will play on the familiar context of other myths within her cultural context. In A Dictionary of African Mythology, Harold Scheub has constructed an invaluable bridge to the richly diverse oral cultures of Africa. In this magnificent collection, he not only provides hundreds of fascinating myths, but recaptures their cultural contexts--in which story and storyteller, tradition and performance, all merge.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Guide to African Mythology.......2006-09-04

Most people today are familar with the mythologies of Greece, Rome, Egypt and possibly the Norse, but how many people can name people or places from sub-Saharan African mythology? Despite the continuation of many indigenous religions in Africa, to say nothing of the proliferation of African religions in the New World (such as Voudon, Santeria and Candomble), few people know much about the gods, heros and legends of Africa.

Set up as a dictionary, with entries in alphabetical order, this book is starts to change some of that. After a short introduction that explains the background of African myths and the storytelling traditions, this book goes on to give hundreds of different African myths. Each entry explains the myth and gives a story, along with the culture group and what country or country the story comes from. Included are countless important stories from across the continent, taken from everyone from the Zulu of South Africa to the Berbers of Morocco. Tunisian stories of the Arab hero Abu Zayd are included, alongside the Khoi story of how Heitsi-Ebib parted the waters and how the Egyptian sun god Ra created the world. Yoruba stories about Shango, the Orisha of thunder and lightning, stand beside tales of the epic Swahili culture hero Liongo. There are entries about Abuk, the first woman to the Dinka of Sudan who caused the fall of man, and entries about the Mpaca forest spirit of the Nyanga from the Congo and the Hausa folklore about the bull who supports the world on his horns.

Hundreds of different stories from across Africa are included, mostly focusing on gods, spirits and culture heros. Scattered throughout the book are a couple of essays about African storytelling traditions, and some traditional African proverbs (both in the original languages and translated into English). There are also some pictures of African art, and a map. A very thorough work of scholarship, as could be seen from the bibliography (which includes sources for each story). Even better, the end includes an index which lets you search for myth by country and culture, so if you want to find something from, say Cameroon or perhaps the Tutsi people, you can easily find it by going to the index. There is another appendix which includes myths sorted by category, such as creation myths, myths of seperation between man and god, and myths of the origin of death. This is great if you ever want to do a cross-cultural survey of myths.

All in all, this is an essential book for anyone interested in mythology and storytelling, especially in the context of Africa. While it is far from being a comprehensive guide to African myth, if such a thing is even possible, it does give a very good survey of pan-African mythology, and it makes it easy to search myths by theme, culture/language group and country. That makes it a great starting point and source of reference, even if it doesn't incldue every single African myth. So do yourself a favor and check this book out. It will certainly expand your cultural knowledge, which is a good thing.

            Book Description

African-American Traditions in Song, Sermon, Tale, and Dance is undeniably the most valuable resource available to scholars engaged in Afro-American folk culture research. An untapped wealth of primary information has been chronologically cataloged within this comprehensive, annotated guide. It covers a period of over 300 years of African-American cultural history in the United States. Materials fall into three categories: literary publications, iconographical records, and collections of song, tale, and sermon texts. Focusing on folk culture, 2,328 items were chosen for their historical relevance as well as to insure broad representation. Eileen Southern and Josephine Wright's bibliography provides researchers with the tools needed to shatter myths and stereotypes and to form concise theses supported by extensive evidence. The bibliography is divided into four major chronological sections: "Colonial-Federalist", "Antebellum", "Post-Emancipation", and "Early Twentieth Century". A fifth section, "The WPA Slave Narrative Collection", includes materials (collected in the 1930s) that are essential to a serious discussion of American slavery. Within these five sections materials are classified as literature, artwork, and/or collections. Literature and artwork subsections are further divided into social activities, religious experience, song, and tale. Iconographical entries often compliment the literary ones and some themes run throughout the book. The materials are indexed by names of authors and artists, by subject, and by first lines of songs.

As an introduction to our Shakespeare unit in my 12th grade AP English class, I divided the kids into two groups. One group prepared King Lear, and the other prepared The Taming of the Shrew. I gave them 4 class periods to prepare, then we had two days of performances. The kids added their own touches to the props in the box and suggested list of additional props. Other teachers brought their classes, and everyone had a great time.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Party Event.......2004-06-20

Back in 2000, when Carl Martin first started selling his Home Shakespeare Festival, I bought his "Macbeth". I was going home for Christmas, and told friends and family to get ready to put on a play. The directions and set-up of the kit are fantastic, and couldn't possibly make it any easier. It even tells you which parts can be played by the same people, if you don't have enough bodies. And don't worry about costuming - we just set out a tablefull of my mom's aprons and scarves and told people to dress themselves for their part!

We had all ages participating, from 5 year olds (who played Birnham Wood) to retired people. Everybody from total hams (my six-foot brother as Lady McBeth) to shyer types (who had roles as prop managers and small one-line speaking roles) got into it. People still tell me it was one of the best parties they've every gone to - where else could you see someone holding a cabbage, and have to pretend it's a skull? Though I haven't had a King Lear party yet, I highly recommend the Home Shakespeare Festival as a total hoot. Don't forget to have someone videotape it! This is TOTALLY not-just-for-kids!

                5 out of 5 stars A Teacher's Dream.......2003-08-16

I am teaching King Lear for the first time next year. Having taught R/J, Macbeth, and Richard III, I found King Lear to be a little more intimidating. Teachers are constantly looking for anticipatory sets and this is the one! It gives the major facts in an abridged form while using the original language. It is also compeletly student driven (from director to actors). Casting is flexible from 6-12; for bogger classes I plan on staging two productions. Originally designed for parties (students will hardly believe people do this in their off-time), this is a great way to introduce one of Shakespeare's best and most tragic plays!

                  Book Description

In The Rules of Business, the writers and editors of Fast Company distill the major ideas and principles of the world of business into fifty-five essential rules. These rules are elaborated on and enhanced by quotes and insights from over 200 business leaders, practitioners, and thinkers into what is sure to be an essential desk reference for managers, professionals, and executives-to-be.

Published on the tenth anniversary of the magazine, Fast Company's The Rules of Business features the essential principles behind today’s most important business topics, from customer service to innovation, from strategic thinking to leadership and management. The book introduces each category with a two-page commentary, and weaves two to four essential rules throughout every chapter. At the end of each chapter a boxed, bulleted “Fast Take” section gives readers specific takeaways they can use in their day-to-day work. The heart of each chapter, however, is the quotes and insights on the subject culled from the great minds in business, both living and historical—leaders and thinkers such as Machiavelli and Jack Welch, Adam Smith and his invisible hand and Tom Peters on marketing Me, Inc., Michael Porter on (what else?) strategy and A.G. Lafley, Jeff Bezos on the perils of hiring the wrong person and Bill Gates on the value of information technology, Anne Mulcahy and Warren Buffett, and many more. Fast Company's The Rules of Business is the ultimate desk reference.

                  From The Rules of Business

                  Rule #1
The first rule of business is the same as the first rule of life: Adapt or die.
                  “What gets measured, gets done.”
                  —Peter Drucker

                  Rule #8
Nothing is more overrated than a new idea. Ideas by themselves are worthless. It’s what you do with them that matters.
“Bet on the jockey, not on the horse.”
                  —Malcolm Forbes

                  “Best practices usually aren’t.”
—Christopher Locke, co-author, The Cluetrain Manifesto

                  Rule #49
If it is not right, don’t do it; if it is not true, don’t say it.
“If you think you’re too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room.”
—Dame Anita Roddick, founder, The Body Shop

4 out of 5 stars Quotes for Success!.......2006-02-23

These 2 quotes are not from the book, but are quotes about quotes:

"The wisdom of the wise, and the experience of ages, may be preserved by quotations" - Isaac Disraeli

"It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read a good book of quotations" - Sir Winston Churchill

This book is basically a collection of quotes. Some are extremely powerful and some are well-not so powerful. I'm a big believer in quotes, here are a few from the book:

On change, "Adapt or Die" The first 10 pages are about change and how business is constantly evolving and how those that can't keep up are doomed.

"Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration. Yes, sir, it's mostly hard work." - Thomas A. Edison

"A half-backed strategy well executed will be superior to that marvelous strategy that isn't executed very well." - Allan Gilmour, vice chairman Ford Motor Co.

"The only new thing new in the world is the history you don't know." - President Harry S. Truman

"Good leaders are curious; they spend a lot of time trying to learn new things." - Jeffrey Immelt, CEO, GE

There are lot of good inspirational quotes in this book. It's a good book to have on your desk and glance at time and again.

The author provides pearls of wisdom on a plethora of complicated
business topics and decisions. For instance, we are asked to
anticipate or embrace change early. Ideally, this should take
place when things are going well. Sometimes, success breeds
difficulty in unlearning bad habits or undoing complacency.
Very often, the identification of key facts will precipitate
change. The author believes that customer service is part of the
job. We are asked to learn from failure rather than wallow in it.
Intuition is part experience and part talent; however, we should
act upon our best instincts or feelings. The preferred decision-
making process should involve the following:

                  - framing questions
                  - fact finding
                  - analysis and conclusions
                  - learning from experience and mistakes made previously

Good process design should be common sense. Simplicity and
ease of use by customers are the premier concerns. The corporate
logo should be "faster, cheaper and better" . We should learn
from the people in the trenches because they are aware of the
practical dimensions of new ideas/processes. In addition,
the author provides a timeframe of from 7-10 years to introduce,
perfect and implement new techniques, designs and processes.
The acquisition is worth the price charged for the reader who
                  will implement the contents dispassionately.

I've looked forward to getting my monthly copy of the magazine Fast Company for an number of years. Now they have have "hit another home run" with an excellent book.

It's a fun, easy read with an three excellent indexes in the back. The first, "Sources" gives the source for each quote found in the 22 different chapters. The second is an "Index of Quote Titles", and the third is and Index of Authors, i.e. the people who gave the business wisdom quote.

This is also an excellent "idea starter" for short, meaningful motivational talks.

Try it, you'll like it and probably will buy a friend a copy!
