Book Description
Although we tend to think of television primarily as a household fixture, TV monitors outside the home are widespread: in bars, laundromats, and stores; conveying flight arrival and departure times in airports; uniting crowds at sports events and allaying boredom in waiting rooms; and helping to pass the time in workplaces of all kinds. In Ambient Television Anna McCarthy explores the significance of this pervasive phenomenon, tracing the forms of conflict, commerce, and community that television generates outside the home.
Discussing the roles television has played in different institutions from 1945 to the present day, McCarthy draws on a wide array of sources. These include retail merchandising literature, TV industry trade journals, and journalistic discussions of public viewing, as well as the work of cultural geographers, architectural theorists, media scholars, and anthropologists. She also uses photography as a research tool, documenting the uses and meanings of television sets in the built environment, and focuses on such locations as the tavern and the department store to show how television is used to support very different ideas about gender, class, and consumption. Turning to contemporary examples, McCarthy discusses practices such as Turner Private Networks’ efforts to transform waiting room populations into advertising audiences and the use of point-of-sale video that influences brand visibility and consumer behavior. Finally, she inquires into the activist potential of out-of-home television through a discussion of the video practices of two contemporary artists in everyday public settings.
Scholars and students of cultural, visual, urban, American, film, and television studies will be interested in this thought-provoking, interdisciplinary book.
Customer Reviews:
Buy this book.......2002-08-23
Buy this book, whoever you are, if you are at all interested in television, visual culture, and electronic media. It's guaranteed to get you thinking, and it's quite likely going to change your opinions about the simplistic ways TV gets talked about by academics and non-academics alike. Take pleasure in the fact that this is one of the most lucidly written academic titles out there, but doesn't dumb down its analysis; McCarthy addresses her reader carefully, respectfully, and without a tad of the vapid academic insiderism exhibited in the Newport Beach reviewer's unexplained and to my mind inexplicable response to the book. Plus it's loaded with wonderfully illustrative photos and line drawings. A real treat.
Good try, but doesn't quite work........2002-08-20
McCarthy has hit on an interesting idea--television is as much a public as a domestic fixture. Unfortunately, she doesn't quite follow through. The book has the air of a dissertation, careful but uninspired in its research as well as in the conclusions the author draws. In the end, it's a disappointment.

Book Description
There is never a dull moment in Ruby Prairie, especially since young widow Charlotte Carter has opened Tanglewood, a pink Victorian refuge for troubled girls. Sixty-two-year-old massage therapist, Treasure Evans, comes to live at Tanglewood to help with another newcomer to Ruby Prairie, Jasper Jones. Packed with surprises, romances and a bit of trouble, A New Day at Tanglewood is sure to be an enjoyable read.
Customer Reviews:
Great, heartwarming story.......2006-01-04
I, too, loved Annette's first novel in the Ruby Prairie series. But the second one, A New Day at Tanglewood, is even better: more action, plot, suspense, more character development, more romance--yet still more of the same likeable characters in this small town setting. Annette has a way of drawing the reader into the simple Mayberry-like lifestyle, and making you wish you could go there and visit--if just for a day. You'll love the characters, the story, and the setting. I enjoyed this second novel, and look forward to the next one in the series! Rebecca Barlow Jordan, author of 40 Days in God's Presence
Fun, delightful, yet poignant too. Grab the tissues!.......2005-03-01
Although I really enjoyed Annette Smith's first novel in the Ruby Prairie series (A Town Called Ruby Prairie) I must admit that I loved this second book even more. Maybe that's because some romance started brewing (and no, I won't tell you between who :) but also because of some heart-wrenching moments that made even grown men cry. Better keep a box of tissue handy. I can't wait to read the final book to find out what happens next with Pastor Jock, Charlotte, the delightful Treasure--who is a treasure--and the girls at Tanglewood along with the rest of the denizens of Ruby Prairie!

Jesus ministers in a real sanctuary.......2001-09-25
The book of Hebrews tells us that Jesus has entered "the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands." Yet most Christians have little concept of a heavenly sanctuary. Goldstein argues persuasively that the sanctuary is a central biblical concept in both the Old and New Testaments. In the OT it taught sinners that the only way to salvation was through blood -- the blood of animals symbolizing the perfect sacrifice that the Messiah would some day provide. In the NT, the sanctuary is most clearly presented in the books of Hebrews and Revelation. In *Between the Lamb and the Lion* Goldstein focuses particularly on the sanctuary scenes in Revelation, demonstrating that, even after His perfect sacrifice on the cross, Christ is still involved in the life of His people through His ministry in the heavenly sanctuary. A thought-provoking book for the serious Bible student and well worth more than its price.
Excellent!! A must for the serious student of Revelation.......1999-06-07
This book is suberbly accurate and very informative, if you are looking for Jesus in the book of Revelation this book is a must!!! Goldstein has struck gold again.

THE PRINTED PAGE 221 FOREWORD THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE believes that it has been led providentially to the study of China at a great crisis in her history. Until November the Committee confidently expected to publish a book on another sub ject; but the serious illness of the author compelled a sudden change. The Committee was led to write to Dr. Headland who responded to the request that he write a book on present conditions in China with a time limit of six weeks. He has completed the task and the Committee issues this unique book on China on the date intended. Dr. Headland from his long residence in Peking has had the advantage of observing at close range the remarkable events and characters of the past decade, while Mrs. Headland, in her position of physician to the princesses, had unusual opportunities to study the women of the highest class. And now China has this day, February 12th, been declared a Republic. With the study of our book begins a new era. Sun Yat Sen, who has done so much to free China, is a rare man the highest type of Christian patriot. The future of China now depends largely on the attitude of the Christian Church and her response to the needs of the Chinese. How marvellously God is working his purpose out. He has opened the doors and waits for us to say whether the earth shall be filled with His knowledge. This new book proves beyond a doubt that 2 Peter 3 is not a prediction of the end of planet earth! There is not another book like this on the market anywhere, by anyone! Scholarly, well-written, compelling! This is a must read for serious Bible students!

A Powerful Polemic for Prophecy Fulfilled.......2007-03-07
Don Preston employs his savant like gift of biblical observation and his obviously indefatigable efforts to present a thorough integration of prophecy and fulfillment. It must have taken many years to accrue such a wealth of insights into this important subject of eschatology. It remains to be tested, yet I am willing to wager this work is an irrefutable presentation of full preterism.
My excitement did wane a bit as Preston addressed Universalism in the Addendum. While he did rightly oppose it, he is weak in soteriology. How I wish that the Reformed church would profit from his eschatology as I wish he would profit from their soteriology. He would benefit from Gary Long's "Definite Atonement" and John Murray's "Redemption Accomplished and Applied" regarding the nature and the extent of the atonement.
Finally, his challenge to antinomian preterists in the post-Parousia age was excellent. He made the case for holiness with his usually keen observation and adroit use of logic.
Overall, it is a must read for all Christians; in particular those who deem preterism to be heretical. If you intend on controverting this work, you have Sisyphean task before you.

Product Description
The Mentoring Pocketbook - now in its second edition and significantly extended - shows how to design and manage a mentoring scheme, how to prepare to be a mentor, how to conduct mentoring sessions, how to maintain the relationship through the different stages and how to evaluate mentoring. Before looking at the actual mentoring process, the authors deal with the uses of mentoring within organisations (particularly in the context of managing change and mission/value statements) and explain how mentoring differs from coaching, training and appraisals. The process of mentoring is explained with the aid of a 3-stage model. This can be used to assess yourself as a mentor, as a map to guide you through the process, as a review tool and as a means to develop the mentee's ability to use the model independently. Subsequent chapters explore the mentor-mentee relationship and address key issues and questions. Although primarily aimed at the mentor, The Mentoring Pocketbook is also helpful to mentees.

A Pocketful of Practical Tips.......2003-04-03
This book gives practical strategies for starting and maintaining mentor partnerships in organizations. Written for the business community, these techniques can be used in any setting. A small pocket-sized book, just right for lunch or the train ride home, it's a quick read with humorous illustrations and applicable quotes. Most notably is the three stage model for guiding the mentor through the mentoring process. A process that includes exploring the relationship, reaching new understandings and action planning. Each stage is described and the authors give strategies and methods for working within the stages. In addition, each stage has suggested comments and questions the mentor might say when communicating with the mentee. The authors suggest that the mentor use this model for reflection and planning.
The book falls short in many ways. It does not emphasize the important distinctions between mentoring and managing. More coverage should have been given to this topic since managers/supervisors/coaches are more likely the audience for this book. Also, it glazes over the very practical issue of time by estimating that mentors spend 2-3 hours a month mentoring. The authors do not say what this figure is based upon. Lastly, it does not adequately address the importance of the reciprocity in mentoring partnerships. This book is meant for mentor and mentees, but the mentee's role as guider is downplayed.
Coming up with the right thing to say has always been a challenge for me. I like that this little book actually gives a handful of sample questions and comments I can use. Also, the author gives some good tips for both the mentor and the mentee in the process. An added bonus is the issues and questions section in the back of the book, followed by some blank pages for note-taking.

Mentoring Overview.......2007-01-10
This pocketbook gives an overview of mentoring in schools. All aspects of mentoring - the process, peer mentoring, learning mentors, volunteer mentors, and e-mentoring - are covered. For a good summary and a quick reference this is an excellent publication. There are references for further training but these tend to apply to the UK as would be expected from a British publication. I recommend this pocketbook for anyone wanting a succinct informative overview of mentoring in schools.
