Art Linson, producer of such Hollywood films as Car Wash, The Untouchables, Melvin & Howard, and This Boy's Life, among others, has written a chummy and chatty how-to "for that small and perhaps unfortunate group"--aspiring movie producers. Seduced by the glitz, glamour, and cutthroat glee that clung (and clings) to Hollywood producers, young Linson never really "got" what it was they did. In 1961, when he was getting started, a producer's role was as ill-defined as it was just this side of unseemly. Producers, begins Linson in the highly amusing, anecdotal A Pound of Flesh, were "compared to Willy Loman, not Arthur Miller."
Make no mistake: Linson is lecturing to the Hollywood aspirant--not to aspiring auteurs or scrappy independent filmmakers. As such, A Pound of Flesh is a strange breed--more travelogue through Tinseltown than down-to-earth how-to. It's ripe with gossip and "aren't we wonderful?" scenes--the morphing of Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas into an updated, drug-drenched version of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Walking into Thompson's hotel room for the initial meeting, Linson was confronted with a smoking gun and a four-inch hole in the wall. And that's just the beginning of their "negotiations." (The film actually became Where the Buffalo Roam, starring Bill Murray.)
Where the chatty, chummy Linson primer becomes useful is with behind-the-scenes examples of such "lessons" as pitching the idea; working with writers, directors, and cast members; and understanding budgets and the studio system. Where it goes soft is with such vague and hip promptings as "if you have a head filled with good ideas, an extended list of Hollywood hangouts is more beneficial than a list of agencies and production companies." So introverts beware! To succeed in Hollywood, you still need the chutzpah, the connections, and the dough.
Wild exploits, turns of fate, and serendipities characterize the brazen and breezy teachings of A Pound of Flesh. What is fabulous is Linson's unbridled enthusiasm. Aspirants and movie fans alike will find this highly entertaining book a quick read, hard to put down, and irresistible. But rely on Linson as your sole Virgil through Tinseltown and your dreams of artistic success will surely falter.

Perilous Tales of How to Produce Movies in Hollywood.......2005-03-12
A Great read. As entertaining as is is informative, this is one of the better books on producing that I have read. The book is broken down in the same way a producer goes about putting together a project. From conception to birth, this covers it all. Many great stories and personalities are covered (esp. good is the section on the Untouchables and not being able to get David Mamet to write anymore because he was off working on his own film House of Games). Pick this one up and enjoy.
Much Better than Lydia Obst book.......2002-07-29
I have read this book and one by Lydia Obst ("Hello, He Lied"). I preferred the Linson by a mile - Obst is too full of herself (she even disses Linson!). Linson discusses the role of producer and his contribution to films such as "Car Wash" and "The Untouchables". There's a revelatory look at a film he worked on the DIDN'T get made, called "Arrive Alive". Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the process of motion picture production.
Fun read, but not necessary...........2000-12-21
I saw bits and pieces of an interview with Linson on the new FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH DVD and when I found out he had a book out I decided to check it out. He's been involved as a producer with some of my favorite movies (HEAT, THE UNTOUCHABLES, FIGHT CLUB). This was a quick and enjoyable read. You'll learn a little about what a producer does. What I gleaned from the book was that a producer:
A) Brings the elements (writer, director, cast) together
B) Pitches the project to the studio and helps secure financing
C) Greases the gears to keep a film production going.
D) Takes a lot of crap from different creative prima donnas
Can you learn these things any other way? Sure, talk to a real Hollywood producer. But if you don't have access to one, pick up Linson's book. There are some really fun anecdotes in here, like dinner with Hunter S. Thompson, talking wardrobe with DeNiro, and wrangling re-writes out of David Mamet.
"A Pound of Flesh" will be of interest to aspiring producers and those who enjoy finding out what happnens before and while the cameras roll.
Not a necessary read for all, but for those into the film world. Linson's writing style is highly conversational and pleasurable to read.
The Producer's Primer.......2000-02-08
In an honest, engaging, and pithy memoir, Art Linson manages to convey not only what a producer is and does in modern Hollywood, but also why that individual is so important both in the creation and final success of the product. If American film stands at the nexus of creativity and enterprise, the producer is the individual who must mediate the inevitable clash between these immutable forces, and Linson openly recalls his successes as well as his failures. It's not always pretty, but it's always good.
In fact, the book's great strength is Linson's success in divorcing himself - or his ego - from his topic, allowing the reader to learn with the author, rather than from him. The entire process of the creation of a film, from pitch to production to premiere, including unpleasant diversions like Turnaround Hell and rites like Test Screenings, is laid before us through Linson's formative years as a producer.
What the reader ends with is an understanding of the filmmaking process that no textbook could convey, and that few insiders would be willing to impart to a tyro.
This is truly a primer on movie production that belongs on the shelf of everyone from development executive to film student to movie-lover.
Entertaining and Informative.......1999-05-21
This book is about 100X better than Lydia Obst's egotisticalpiece. Indeed, Linson is remarkably ego-free - and he's worked with DeNiro, De Palma, Mamet, and others. His tales are entertaining, at times harrowing, and best of all, he describes the process of assembling all the elements to produce a picture. Not a knockout, but a solid, informative piece of work. I'd like to meet Linson one day.

Ughhh............2004-08-08
Once again, WotC's D20 system claims another casualty. This book carries on the crass misportrayal of the Drow as a race of dominatrixes in Boris Vallejo strap outfits, whose primary vise of their universe is sexual perversity. They mutilate the Drow pantheon, and while much of the artwork is indeed beautiful and well-done, there is a particular emphasis placed upon depicting pointless nudity and fetishist situations. Much of this book, I found sickening, and it wasn't the graphic descriptions of violence.
That said, there ARE some useful things in the book, like a description of Drow name honorifics, and some of the aspects of society have thankfully not been tampered with by the fanboys. Some of the subraces are interesting, particularly the Drey, and the martial arts styles are a blast. Just.....avoid the bits about the Drow society centering around leather and whips, and please keep the mind out of the gutter.
As if the Drow weren't cool enough.......2004-04-19
I was really torn to buy this book, I bought a drow book from one company before and it was terrible. So I was alittle afraid to buy Plots and Poisons but because it was Green Ronin's and I always am impressed by their products I decided to go ahead. All I can say is that once again Green Ronin put out a book that takes a wonderful creation to greater heights. For the first time in a while I am afraid for my player's character and they should be too.
Another great book from Green Ronin........2003-09-07
Whether you're a casual fan of the Dark Elves or a long time lover of the Drow this book will have something for you. It grants amazing insight into playing this mysterious race as well as presenting a mind numbing number of options for character customization. From prestige classes(such as the mutating Creature Cultist to the demanding Dominant) to sub-races(such as the barbaric Drey and rules for creating Half-Drow of any race) to martial art styles, new magic spells and domains and finally new magic item descriptors and even a new magic item type(the verminous magic item which are magic items created from living verminous creatures). One of the few books I feel warrant a "must have" status.
The reason I drop it down to 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the header font type they use. It's a bit difficult to read. Aside from that this is simply a superb book.
the drow brought to life.......2003-03-12
This is a good source of material to create either your own drow characters or a group of marauding villains. The first chapter gives you details for making them "real". It includes sub-races, being a drow elf,and a history from their point of view among other things. It also has alternate natural spells for YOUR drow elves. ie fire spells to replace what they normally start with. Chapter two gives a pantheon of gods for them to worship(no Lolth).Chapter three gives you new and old creatures of the underdark. It includes a template for drider characters and of course drow elves as well. Chapter four has prestige classes. Includes a new kind of bard called the deepsinger and something for every other class as well. The last four chapters detail spells, equipment(repeating hand crossbow), skills, feats, and magic items. All in all this is a wonderful source of ideas and can help fill in the blanks for your own band of merry marauders.
Assistant Golf Pro.......2003-03-11
Just reading the discription, and looking at the cover has me excited about getting this book. My group of players are usually up to there necks in drow intrigue. So this should help flesh out our adventures nicely. Not to mention that on occasion, I have a drow player character.

A comprehensive guide to the world of mergers and acquisitions
Why do so many M&A transactions fail? And what drives the success of those deals that are consummated? Robert Bruner explains that M&A can be understood as a response by managers to forces of turbulence in their environment. Despite the material failure rates of mergers and acquisitions, those pulling the trigger on key strategic decisions can make them work if they spend great care and rigor in the development of their M&A deals. By addressing the key factors of M&A success and failure, Applied Mergers and Acquisitions can help readers do this. Written by one of the foremost thinkers and educators in the field, this invaluable resource teaches readers the art and science of M&A valuation, deal negotiation, and bargaining, and provides a framework for considering tradeoffs in an effort to optimize the value of any M&A deal. Applied Mergers and Acquisitions is part of a complete suite of resources on M&A that includes a workbook and a CD-ROM with additional spreadsheets.
Robert F. Bruner, MBA, DBA (Charlottesville, VA), is the Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at the Darden School at the University of Virginia and Executive Director of the Batten Institute. Customer Reviews:
Very comprehenive in an acedemic way.......2007-04-25
Very complete but not a "how to.." guide.
A great and thought provoking resource.
Should be on every investment banker book shelf
Very Difficult to Follow.......2007-03-19
I found the book to be very difficult to follow in that it seems to be written for graduate level courses on the subject, with very little practical application. The book provides a detailed literature review but it is a bit dated. There is nothing about the rise of private equity and hedge funds in recent years. The book would also benefit from the use of more examples. Its sheer size and number of chapters makes it a bit disjointed.
You should own this book..........2007-02-14
... if you have any interest in M&A. But your professors must have already told you so!
Simply the best text on M&A.......2007-01-27
After attending an executive program in mergers and acquisitions, I decided to purchase this book after reviewing a variety of books on the subject. I also own Arzac's book, but it is only applicable to valuation.
This book is simply the best text on M&A and it has served as a nice supplament to program that I attended. Between the program and reading this book, I now feel like I am an expert on the subject.
Arzac's book on valuation provides the final topping on the subject manner.
Nice Nice Book.......2006-04-10
very nice overview on MnA. Good introduction and provides references for those who wanna dig into specific topics.
However, this is a general overview for a wide range of MnA topics, you will not gain a specific expertise from this book.
For me, the most useful way of learning a topic like MnA is by actually looking at spreadsheets and exhibits instead of reading bunge of writings. This book has many nice exhibits/tables to demonstrate the calculations, so after the reading, I can look at the exhibits/spreadsheets to see if I understand how the numbers are calculated.
this should be the first read, arzac should be followed up to gain a more solid background in valuation.
No comments on the CDROM, I didn't buy it.

Apt Focus.......2004-01-03
This book has a useful focus (financial analysis) and includes helpful case studies. The author has experience as both a manager and teacher, which makes the writing both realistic and readable.
A fresh look at critical acquisition issues.......2003-11-21
Dr. Ferguson has made an important contribution to the field of M&A research. His analysis of the impact of cultural issues on the success of acquisitions is thought provoking and very timely. His writing style is clear and entertaining. This is a must read for M&A practioners, corporate development professionals and CEO's of acquisitive companies.
A great book about quantitative measurements of M&As.......2003-10-18
Acme's Inc. strategy is loud and clear. We will grow our markets and product lines through strategic acquisitions! With over half a billion dollars in Acme's coffers, acquisitions will put us right at the top of our markets!
Do you think, that this M&A strategy works? What will work and what will fail? How are we going to select the right companies for our M&As? All these questions have a common theme - people. The hardest to quantify assets are employees. If we just could factor in their reaction to change, then we will be able to predict Acme's financial performance. In other words, if we add organizational culture measurements to the due-diligence process, then we can gain the insights of how people on both sides will accept or resist an acquisition. And we can do that before risking hundreds of millions of dollars.
How much would such a tool will be worth to you? With more than 2/3 of M&As failing to increase shareholder value, it is easy to see why Stuart Ferguson's Quantitative Organization Culture Analyses, or QUOCA, presents a very valuable resource to executives, integration managers, bankers, and financial analysts - just to mention a few. Check how cultures can make your deal fly, or crash. Personally, I also appreciate the books' easy to read style and flow.
