Book Description
Everett Weinberger has an Ivy League education and an MBA, but what he really wants to do is produce.
He's willing to start at the bottom-even if it means being Alec Baldwin's personal assistant-but after tapping all his L.A. connections, he still can't land a job. He even blows one interview by forgetting to compliment a studio exec on his car.
When Everett gets work as a "power temp," life gets even weirder. He becomes second assistant to everyone from Frank Wells to Leonard Nimoy, trying to cope with the incessant phone calls and invisible protocols that keep getting him fired.
Wannabe is a scathing and laugh-out-loud funny portrait of a world where even the assistants are political barracudas, by a guy with no bridges left to burn. A real-life Swimming With Sharks, it should be required reading on the Hollywood syllabus.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad for a quitter.......2006-05-12
This book was great. First off, it is a step by step account of what to expect when you try to get in the biz. Second, it has a lot of good advice that you can learn from- "...learn from others' mistakes." Third, it was a damn fun read.
As for the author, he let his dad and the fact that he didn't want it bad enough send him packing... which is good. Too many people think that Hollywood is for them and without any experience move out there and find out that unless you really, really, really want nothing more than to work in film, you will be miserable, and unless extremely lucky, fail in the same manner. This was him.
I am glad for him that he seems to be doing well and can definitely relate.
Easy Reading & Entertaining.......2006-03-10
A fun and interesting look inside Hollywood from the perspective of one trying to make it as a beginner - I couldn't get my mind off of the book while watching the Oscars - and trying to visualizing all of the sneering, backbiting and ego-maniacal personalities behind those bright white innocent & friendly-looking smiles. Everett's writing style is fluid and flows easily. I enjoyed it.
business skills don't translate to Hollywood skills.......2005-05-03
If you are looking for Hollywood insight then "Hello, He Lied" by Lynda Obst is far better. "Wannabe" is a story about living in the trenches as someone just starting out in Hollywood. The stories are not hilarious or cutting edge in any way; rather they are the mundane ups and downs of possible opportunities. One of the major stories is an interview to be Alec Baldwin's assistant. Yes, the interview is the major part of the story. All the while the author (in my opinion) is looking at the book as the way to get back into Hollywood. (An early part of the book describes how the scene would look in camera angles and at the end there is a gleeful note that the book has been optioned as a screenplay.) Overall, the author does not understand the byzantine rules by which Hollywood operates and I didn't gain much insight from his book either.
Wry, well-written, but no surprises here.......2004-03-13
Let's face it: it's a luxury, pure and simple, to be able to move across country to gamble on the chance to become a successful Hollywood producer, as Everett Weinberger did. Fortunately, he doesn't court our sympathy, as it's hard to feel sorry for someone with degrees from Columbia and Stanford, as well as Wall Street experience to fall back on--as he eventually does.
That said, his book is witty and well-written, and he gives a colorful and to my eye (as an expat native southern Californian) accurate of life, but not love, in Los Angeles. His attempts to learn office routine in ten seconds or less, as he brought his high hopes from one stressful, menial office temp job to another, are portrayed with genuine humor. There's a happy ending, too, but not the one Weinberger originally had in mind.
Those looking for a "how-to" guide to success in the movie industry should look elsewhere. "Wannabe" is worth reading on its own merits alone, as a picaresque journey through parking garages, phone systems, and eye-candy location.
Hilarious.......2003-04-21
I like a lot of mere mortals entertained ideas of 'going to Hollywood' and reading scripts and moving and shaking deals. However, after 3 chapters of this book all this changed.
Although the author had a bad experience, well actually, a lot of them, I was nevertheless glad that it wasn't me. I've read over and over that unless your relatives work in this industry you have a snowballs chance to make it there - no matter how good your qualifications.
A quick and entertaining read with a lot of black humor. Future wannabes will be enlightened.
Book Description
Comprised of singing and body movement activities which incorporate the principles of music educator Jaques Dalcroze and using the repertoire of the Suzuki Method, MOVEMENT THAT FITS was written by Dalcroze educator Joy Yelin who is also knowledgeable about the Suzuki Method. There is an introduction by the editor, Ken Guilmartin, director of the Center for Music and Young Children and himself a certified Dalcroze instructor. MOVEMENT THAT FITS consists of sequentially structured singing and movement activities presented in easy-to-read outline form. Lifelike drawings and other visual aids accompany each activity along with information about the Dalcroze approach to rhythm, movement and music reading. Suzuki Method favorites such as 'Twinkle' and 'Go Tell Aunt Rhody' serve as the basis for the various activities.
Customer Reviews:
lots of good ideas.......2007-01-26
The book consists of numerous ideas in which gross motor activity is incorporated either with the the Twinkle variations, with other songs in the first Suzuki book, or with short pieces written by the author herself.
The book is easy to read because it contains numerous illustrations and musical examples.
I give it only a 4 because I like discussion of educational philosophy better than I like lesson plans. If you are a teacher who prefers lesson plans, you might give it a 5.

I LOVE THIS BOOK.......2006-01-03
This book brings so many memories... I had it as a child and I remember even cutting up the book to try to figure out some puzzles. Alas, I was too young to fully comprehend everything and now I'm too old to remember much of it. It took me months to track down the name of this book because I totally forgotten it but luckily the images are branded in my memory.
I love this book. Perhaps the hunt is no longer on but the book can still be enjoyed for its mystery, illustrations, and challenges. I bought the "collectors" book on this website and now I am in search of the video... ahh a treasure hunt for the treasure video! Lolz, 20 years too late... Any leads for me?
the search.......2002-07-11
A copy of this book was given to me when I was 14 years old and I loved it so much that I wanted to share it with everyone. I gave it away to a good friend in high school and then we lost touch. I haven't seen the book in years but I still remember the haunting story and the beautiful illustrations. I recently moved to San Fransisco and found myself (half)remembering scenes from the book and searching for clues in Chinatown! I always look in bookstores for it and plan to buy another copy one day.

Treasure: In Search of the Golden Horse.......1999-12-26
One of the best puzzle books ever created. It kept me working diligently for years along with countless others including two fellows that solved the puzzle after the contest ended. They dug up the empty box in a mountain pass in Colorado just to prove to themselves they had solved it. (The gold horse and money had already been donated to charity.) Dr. Crypton, the puzzlemaster, is in a class alone for fiendishly difficult, but fun and absorbing puzzles. I wish he would do another one. There was also a Treasure video with clues and I logged many hours studying that as well. It was solvable - I cracked part of it - but you just had to believe you could actually do it and not give up. That was the ultimate secret for the guys that figured it all out.
tink_1974@yahoo.com treasure wasnt found.......1999-10-13
The treasure wasnt found but after the game ended two guys did find where the location had been..to late!! does anyone have a copy of the book or movie?

Kids love pirates and flap books! This book has it all!.......1997-10-24
This is a really fun, silly adventure story with kid-pirates (with names like Sackbottom and Tattoo Tessie) at the helm. There are flaps on every page, and even a fold-out game board and game spinner tucked in a back-pocket. (The game is similar to CandyLand.) I gave this book to my nephew (age 5); he made me play this game with him for HOURS!

Customer Reviews:
The Seven Treasure Hunts.......2002-04-30
The book is about two boys named Jackson and Goat, and they have seven treasure hunts. Jackson has a bigger sister and likes to bother her. They also sometimes bury treasure so they can have fun finding it later. The seven chapters are very neat and cool. Chapter four is called The Hunt for the Missing Treasure. Read to find out what treasure they find. I would say that other kids my age will like to read this book it is funny and they will get a blast out of it.
A Total Delight!.......2000-08-30
My son and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My son is entering third grade, but is struggling with reading at the level he should be at. This book is aimed for his age, but is still an easy reader. It helped give him the confidence he needs as it is aimed towards third and fourth graders and he could read it! Thank you Betsy Byars for realizing not all children read at the same level, but still need books appropriate for their age to keep their interest. The Seven Treasure Hunts is about two boys, Jackson and Goat, who use maps and clues to find eachothers treasures. Each boy takes a turn hiding stuff of their own and gives the other either a map or clue to find it. Of course things don't always go according to plans. There is the stolen chocolate popsicle which will make kids want to keep reading to find out what happened with it. And then dealing with Goats sister, Rachael a.k.a the ogre, will leave kids laughing. It is written with much humor for young and old alike. My son read this out loud to me and we both really enjoyed it. Thank you, thank you Betsy Byars.

Book Description
In today’s volatile marketplace, it’s rare for firms to last—much less consistently increase earnings—for more than four decades. That’s what makes the story of 115-year-old global manufacturing and technology leader Emerson so remarkable, and so valuable, for today’s managers. How does Emerson do it? And what can other companies learn from its success?
Celebrated business leader Charles F. Knight—who was CEO of Emerson for 27 of its 43 consecutive years of increased profits—says the secret behind Emerson’s long-term competitiveness is a dynamic management process carried out with unrelenting discipline. In Performance Without Compromise, Knight breaks down the key components of the Emerson management process in detail for the first time, and shows how this core process enables Emerson to address and overcome major challenges ranging from technological discontinuities to intense global competition.
A remarkable success story, Performance Without Compromise is filled with insightful lessons about leadership, management, and competitiveness that can be applied in any company or industry.
Customer Reviews:
Good overview of the Emerson business planning systems, but could have included some more interesting stories!.......2006-08-11
This book clearly lays out the Emerson business planning model, which is the process used to run the business. I work at Emerson, so i aready know a lot about this planning cycle. I think the average reader will not find this book that interesting, but it will useful to know the great information inside it. I wish that Mr. Knight would have shared some more stories about inside the board room and some of the more exciting history of his career. It would also have been interesting to get more about what he personally went through at Emerson and before. Finally, he should have included more about management and the HR side of developing the people.
Great inspiration for managers.......2006-03-22
This book is a clear exposition of why Charles Knight is one of the great CEO's of the last fifty years. Emerson is a focussed, consistently profitable company. Any manager, or person who wants to be a manager, deserves to read this book and learn how it's done.
must read.......2006-03-18
excellent book to be as a motivation tool to get creative juices flowing. don't necessarily agree with the all of the principals but the book is a quick read and has lot's of excellent ideas that can be massaged for your own uses as needed.
a good read presenting insightful business operations and management.......2006-03-09
Provides insight into the mindset and energy (no pun intended) into the Emerson organization. Anybody engaged in business decisions and management would benefit from the thought process presented in the book.
A culture of planning, accountability and trust.......2006-02-21
Performance without Compromise gets right down to business and exposes the cultural underpinnings and successful management process that has made Emerson an unparalleled success story of American and now global business. This is not a how-to book; there are plenty of those. When you look beyond the mechanics of the process, the levels of planning meetings and relentless follow-up, you will see how they foster a business climate of trust, accountability and effective communication at every level of the organization. If you don't see Management as a PROCESS for today's fast-paced, globalized world of business, you will, and within the first few chapters.
