So you've got a new DV camera, a shiny new Mac, and you're itching to make your first film. The only problem is that you don't know a script from a storyboard, or a WS from an MCU. Editing Techniques with Final Cut Pro might be just the thing you need to say "Action!" with confidence and bring that certain polish to your production.
Clearly written and lavishly illustrated, this excellent handbook features over 425 pages and 9 chapters covering everything from the basics of production and what an editor does, the language of film and editing, the planning needed when preparing to edit, and the use of Final Cut Pro itself, from beginning through advanced techniques and effects like ramping the speed of a clip, compositing computer animation over a clip, picture-in-picture, color correction, creating titles, and much more.
This is not a book for the experienced user, but it is a solid handbook for beginners who intend to get serious. Offering far more information than just how to use Final Cut Pro for editing, Editing Techniques with Final Cut Pro is almost misnamed. While the focus of the book is editing, there is so much useful information here on preproduction and production that it is simply a wonderful handbook on how to make a good digital video film.
Apple's Final Cut Pro, now up to version 3.0, has helped fuel the next evolutionary step in video production. By integrating powerful software with their hardware technology, Apple has put video postproduction into the hands of almost anyone who can afford a camera, computer, and software. Access to the equipment, however, doesn't mean a windfall of Oscar winners. Learning how to make a good film requires generous amounts of both talent and technical mastery. This book won't infuse you with talent, but you'll walk away with a clear understanding of how production and postproduction techniques work, and how to produce a finished piece that looks finished. --Mike Caputo

Book Description
In this magisterial book, Henri Dorra synthesizes more than fifty years of study to present a comprehensive examination of Paul Gauguin's symbolism. Drawing on his profound grasp of the artistic and social contexts in which Gauguin worked, Dorra provides new, complex insights into and interpretations of Gauguin's multilayered symbolism. The Symbolism of Paul Gauguin is lavishly illustrated with a major visual compendium of the artist's prodigious output. The highly readable narrative, based on a sophisticated understanding of Gauguin's oeuvre, offers a masterly interpretation of recurrent images and their interrelationships in the contemporaneous artistic and social context.
Dorra discusses Gauguin's iconography and the artist's treatments of similar themes in various media, from prepatory drawings for paintings to related ceramics and wood carvings. He traces Gauguin's meanings in literary sources from classical mythology and the Bible to late ninetheenth-century literature. He also links the form and content of the artist's work to his unusual ancestry and upbringing. As the final scholarly work by an internationally recognized expert on nineteenth-century French symbolism, this book provides a profound new perspective on Gauguin and his work.

New perspective on Gauguin.......2007-07-21
This book is the culmination of a lifetime's study of the life and art of Paul Gauguin by a professor who has developed his material over years of teaching and analysis. It offers many new perspectives on the life and thinking of this artist, and is a must read for any person interested in the artist, his associates and the cultural world in which they worked.

Incredible Book.......2003-11-12
It was approximately 25 years ago when I first encountered this book at my university library (Clemson U). I came across it one day while doing some research. At this time tropical/house plants were becoming the rage. This book, loaded with photos of specimens, showed the incredible variety of plants I was not aware of. I spent a good bit of my study time pouring over the pages and taking inventory of plants. It's worth tracking down to purchase a copy.
I need the book.......2003-05-15
I have been searching for this book for 7 years. I could only turn to the libraries and the government Parks Board for reference. So i would very much appreciate if your company could make it available in the market.
It is a brilliant book for reference especially if one is in the industry. I have not come across any books that could come close to Graf's compilation of plants. I am also very interested in his other book Tropica which is also not been made available in the market. So please could i at least order the book from this review column
The most thorough pictorial book on plants that's out........1998-05-31
I have the Series 3 Seventh Edition. It is the best pictorial book on identifying plants that is out and if you are so lucky to purchase one, you will be envied by your fellow gardners. They are scarce and those who have these books treasure them and do not give them up.
Brilliant.......1997-12-13
I bought my version in 1967 and consider it to be the best illustrated horticultural book I have seen. I still have it. It does suffer a major disadvantage in that it is too thick for one volume making it very unstable to read on your lap,the danger being that it's weight will cause it to drop off while you are holding a page. I have not seen Exotica 4 and would appreciate knowing what changes were made if that is possible. I have to be fair though and tell you that I will not be buying. Thankyou.

Arguably the most intelligent music critic writing.......1999-08-18
Exotica by David Toop
David Toop is arguably the most intelligent music critic writing today, his range of interests prospecting across an avant garde canvas coloured by the 20th century's foremost writers, thinkers and musicians.
Although Toop's subject is predominantly that of fabricated soundscapes in a real world, a music which has come to be categorised as exotica, his roots are literary and extend to novelistic cosmographers like Herman Melville, Joseph Conrad and William Burroughs. Toop is erudite, but refreshingly unacademic in the way his texts are interspersed with autobiography, anecdote, interviews and fiction. Bringing imaginative criticism to bear on a range of subjects from the beginnings of ethnic music to Josephine Baker and Yma Sumac, Les Baxter and Martin Denny, Toop succeeds in aligning the concept of the exotic with world music. In a century in which we have grown to be increasingly interiorised, television often providing our point of contact with the external world, so music has come to assume the role of transporting geography into our rooms. In this respect Les Baxter's floridly contrived soundscapes prove central to Toop's thesis, for Baxter was throughout the 1950's to offer his listeners package tours in sound. According to Toop Baxter's music provided 'running excursions for sedentary tourists who wanted to stroll around some taboo urges before lunch, view a pagan ceremony through gaps in the bamboo, go wild in the sun or conjure a demon, all without leaving home stereo comforts in the whitebread suburbs.' Baxter's albums carried titles such as Caribbean moonlight, Jewels of the Sea, Ritual of the Savage and Ports of Pleasure, and by hinting at sexual licentiousness in exotic landscapes, the music was to prove irresistible to a 1950's record buying public.
Toop is particularly good on inventive vocalists like Josephine Baker and Yma Sumac. When Baker arrived in Paris in 1925 as a dancer with La Revue Négre, she caused a sensation by exposing her breasts when she danced. Aspiring to chanson, she injected the medium with her atavistic African roots, so as to create an exotic vocal genre.
Yma Sumac noted for her collaboration with Les Baxter on Voice of the Xtabay, was an extraordinarily volatile singer of South American ancestry noted for her multi-octave range and freakishly histrionic tone. Sumac shared with Baxter and Denny the ability to transpose a spuriously sourced primitivism to the contrived medium of the Western recording studio.
David Toop is a marvellous guide to the curious, the bizarre, the culted and the durable in 20th century music. His book includes interviews with the eclectic likes of Burt Bacharach, Ornette Coleman, Bill Laswell, Maroumi Hosno and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the renowned Pakistani popular singer.
More than just a vibrantly maverick musician and musicologist David Toop writes with the exciting inventiveness of a fine prose stylist. This is a book to be ingested slowly and with careful attention paid to the originality of the author's metaphors. Exotica is a rich text in the best sense of contemporary writing.

Except for Hortis III, this is the plant bible........1998-06-27
If you are curious about finding out what that odd plant you have had for a while is, or if you are a student of horticulture, or even if you simply want the most complete pictoral guide to tropical plants ever published, this is the book.
The only real drawback to this monumental work is the lack of cover-to-cover color slides, though for its time it was loaded. Through this and other gargantuan works, Alfred Byrd Graf is legendary for his contributions to horticulture.

Excellent reference .......2005-01-17
As an occasional curator and restorer of these items; I can honestly say that this book is a very valuable reference and resource. Especially useful to me is the clear differences between authentic shrunken heads and various simulated or "fakes." Most of the privately-held (and some of the museum's) heads in the U.S. that I have seen are not authentic. The color photographs are top quality and the text is not disappointing.
Best book you will find on this subject.........2003-01-11
This book is well written from a scientific point of view but still easy to read. The author really did his research.
What makes this book even more amazing is the number of good quality pictures.. I believe there are over 150
color photos and 23 B&W photos. I have seen a few books on this subject matter but they are older books with very
few pictures that are in B&W. I believe this is the best and most current(2002) book ever written on this subject.

Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Fifth Edition
ASIN: 026258204X |
Book Description
Bees, birds, bats, fish, and dolphins possess senses that lie far beyond the realm of human experience. In this book Howard C. Hughes tells the story of these "exotic" senses. He tells not only what has been discovered but how it was discovered--including historical misinterpretations of animal perception that we now view with amusement.
The book is divided into four parts: biosonar, biological compasses, electroreception, and the scents of attraction. Although the book is filled with fascinating descriptions of animal sensitivities, the author's goal is to explain the anatomical and physiological principles that underlie them. Knowledge of these mechanisms has practical applications in areas as diverse as marine navigation, biomedical sciences, and nontoxic pest control. It can also help us to obtain a deeper understanding of more familiar sensory systems and the brain in general.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but not what I expected........2004-08-08
I was hoping for an overview of dozens of sensory systems in use in the world today. In that I was disappointed, because the book only covers something like 5 of them. By contrast my Encyclopedia Britannica has a better overview of sensoria under 'senses'.
On the other hand, those senses that are covered are covered in considerably more depth than I was expecting, and were an enjoyable read. Descriptions of the neurobiology of how the various senses process input were particularly welcome.
Very interesting and educational book.......2001-12-06
Good reading for those who loves animals, navigation, sensing,
biology,physics or nature.
an intriguing read..........2000-11-15
how do bats find their way in the dark? how do fish and birds experience or sense the world around them? echolocation, bioelectricity and internal navigation systems are some of the sensory cabilities discussed in this interesting book
Good subject, bad execution.......2000-01-13
This book is about sensory modalities, like a bat's sonar, which humans do not have. Ever since I read Nagel's What is it like to be a Bat as a wee lad, I have wondered that very thing. So you would think I would have loved this book. You might think so, but you woul be wrong.
Though I am very interested in the subject this review covers (hence the 2-stars) I could not finish the book because of the chatty, faux-chummy style. I compleatly support the idea that science writing does not have to be dry and jargon-heavy but there is no need for a forced imitation of an informal discusion.
I may skim though the rest, but every time I open the book I want to send the author Strunk and White.

Puzzles are pretty easy.......2007-09-11
If you are just learning Sudoku these might be enjoyable, but the majority of these puzzles are very easy.
Book Description
A second helping of fun for solvers who enjoy the popular combination of sudoku and wordplay. And this time, #2 includes five larger-than-usual, super-challenging grids that measure 12 x 12.
Wordoku follows the same basic principles as sudoku, except that solvers fill the grid with letters. Under each grid, the letters for that puzzle appear, in a pronounceable anagram. Then, just like the original, you arrange them so that every letter appears in every column, every row, and every box just one time. Unlike sudoku, the fun doesn’t end there, because the answer to the anagram lies buried inside the grid. But beware: in some cases the anagram actually has more than one possible solution!

This book has a bad habit of being weak and juvenille. Very weak and ordinary.

Boost of Energy.......2006-02-05
This encouraging book gives each of the author's 25 selling habits a great little chapter to explain and give a few examples of the technique. Even if you have heard the habit before, it gives you a boost of energy to get going. This book is a great one to have around for all salespeople- new and old.
Schiffmans' 25 Sales Habits Book Is Very Useful.......2006-02-05
The best thing about Stephan's 25 Habits book is that it summarizes what it takes to be a successful sales person.
It's easy to read, and even when you're an experienced sales pro like some of us grizzled old veterans are, you'll still find that there's things you could improve upon in what's explained.. so it's a great "self check" and tune-up, for all levels of sales reps.
Schiffmans' books (and Gitomers) are ones that I recommend all my clients read, as they're important, and their techniques work.
This one is useful, a good overview and primer of what sales success is all about. Nice work.
Ken Calhoun
What gives?.......2005-07-14
You want I should read this book and sell good? I read it and it aint working so good for me.
Never Forget the Fundamentals!.......2005-03-27
Funny, but people seem to believe all show business folks know each other (they don't). Same for sales trainers (we don't either!). So Stephan Schiffman and I, both successful sales trainers/authors/speakers/consultants, somehow managed to avoid each other out on the road for almost 40 years - before finally doing a sales training seminar together just a few months ago. As for me, I was impressed! He had the audience in stiches, while teaching them some very solid sales information.
Understand, "The 25 Sales Habits of Highly Successful Salespeople" is not one of Steve's deeper works (he has plenty of those!). But it a wonderful tool for new salespeople who must first learn the basics of selling, and for any established salesperson who needs to get "re-threaded" (as we all do from time-to-time).
And don't get distracted by some of the negative reviews I saw about Steve's book. Those people are, in my humble opinion, missing the point. Even my material ("The Closers" series of books/audios/videos/newsletters/seminars) gets rapped on occasion. But as does Steve, I find solace in knowing how many salespeople have gotten rich using my material!
Note: You may have noticed that all of my book reviews carry "5 Star" ratings (*****). But that's not the sign of a "soft reviewer." I only review books to which I can honestly give a "5 Star" rating. You may assume, therefore, that any sales training/self-improvement book without my "5 Star" rating is either something less than "5 Star," or I simply haven't gotten to it yet . . . and there are certainly plenty of those!
Customer Reviews:
I took notes........2007-07-06
This book was unlike most I've read about selling. There was very little fluff! The whole thing was covered in less than 130 pages. I found myself taking notes by the second chapter. Great book, simple and straight to the point. Very well written.
