Book Description
An opinionated, revealing collection of interviews with the mercurial Danish director of Dogville, Dancer in the Dark, and Breaking the Waves.
The only director to have accomplished the unique feat of premiering all of his features at Cannes, Lars von Trier is the unabashed prince of the European avant-garde. The grand ambitions of his career mirror those of an earlier generation of directors, such as von Sternberg and von Stroheim, a similarity the director openly acknowledges, having affected the lordly 'von' in his name as a tribute while still in film school. From his highly stylized debut, Element of Crime, to the universally acclaimed Breaking the Waves and controversial musical Dancer in the Dark, von Trier has constantly challenged the boundaries of contemporary film, and this thoughtful and engagingly humorous assortment of interviews with fellow director Stig Björkman reveals the motivation behind his most lasting and controversial innovations-most notably the back-to-basics Dogme 95 movement, as well as the propless, setless Dogville, which debuted at Cannes in 2003 to lavish praise. Accompanied by several 'manifestos' which explicate his most experimental films, Trier on von Trier promises a definitive portrait of "the most brilliant director working in cinema today." Must read book.......2006-11-10
When you watch Trier's films you get some sort of another level cinema or I should say the genial cinema. Well, the book is about the man who makes it to be on this level.
Subject to Inspection.......2006-04-20
A lovely book. Allowed me to meet Von Trier at an unadulteratedly close range. There is a genuine and creative rapport between Von Trier and Bjorkman, and arising from this are very intimate reveals of Von Trier's impressionable childhood, his inner drive and vision, his spirit of abandon, and of course his almost miraculous sense of fascination. An outsider with great powers.
Book Description
Written with humor and insight, this mixture of history, analysis, and reportage sheds fascinating insider light on the eight-year-old Dogme film movement, examining the subject from multiple perspectives. Covered in detail is Dogme's genesis, when, in 1995, Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier, acclaimed director of Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark, and three fellow Danish directors swore to reject the norm of slick, emotionally manipulative, high-concept, and bombastic movie productions. Explained is the Dogme95 philosophy, which entails a return to basic filmmaking through the use of natural lighting and handheld cameras, and the refusal to use special effects, soundtracks, and movie sets. The films and filmmakers of the Dogme movement are discussed, including Thomas Vinterberg (The Celebration), Harmony Korine (Julien Donkey-Boy), Lone Scherfig (Italian for Beginners), and Susanne Bier (Open Hearts). Dogme's debt to previous film waves is explored, as is the impact Dogme has had on current trends in cinema and on today's young filmmakers.

great overview of Dogme 95 movement.......2003-09-29
This book is a great, in-depth look at the Dogme 95 movement. It's the first book I've seen that attempts to cover most of the Dogme films, as well as precursors to the Dogme movement (Godard, Warhol, etc). Jack Stevenson does a great job keeping it interesting, and keeping his perspective on the whole thing too. It's fun to read about the more well-publicized Dogme films like The Celebration and The King is Alive, as well as lesser known but worthy efforts such as Resin and The Sparkle Room. This book makes me want to track down a bunch of films. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Dogme (or Lars von Trier, or indie film in general).
Book Description
With the international success of Breaking the Waves (1996) and Dancer in the Dark (2000), Lars von Trier has established himself as one of the most provocative and daring film directors working in cinema today. A central figure in the conception of Dogme 95, he made the movement's most controversial film, The Idiots (1998), and has played a leading role in the recent resurgence of Danish cinema. Yet despite his success and notoriety, von Trier remains something of an enigma. Famous for not playing the game, he has been hailed as the new Godard by some and an attention-seeking charlatan by others.
Jack Stevenson uncovers the manic genius of Lars von Trier, assessing his life, work, and critical reception. The book follows von Trier from his early life as a troubled son of "cultural radical" parents through to his student days at the Danish Film School, diligently spent making films that were as innovative and disturbing as his later features have proved to be.

Cannes it be true?.......2004-05-02
This is a very enjoyable, well researched book. Any fan of Lars von Trier will enjoy reading this even if it means re-reading information they may have come across in the past. Though the Cannes film festival has been a repeated rite of passage for the director, this book obsessively follows von Trier's relationship with the festival as if it were the only event that mattered in his career. Nevertheless, Stevenson does go to great lengths to cover all aspects of von Trier's life, professional and personal in equal measure.
Overall, this is an excellent book that provides a witty, insightful view into the mind of a very important artist.

A great script and more.......1998-01-22
This is the script, written by the film's Danish director Lars von Trier. A wonderful preface by Swedish film writer Stig Bjorkman, an article by photographer Per Kirkeby, and an introduction by Von Trier. Photos and film info, even the locations list. The story is compelling, obsessional, intensely carnal, heart-breaking, and critical of doctrinaire religion. Von Trier claims that, quite simply, it is a story about "good." He even advances the theory that love -- physical, sexual love -- can heal. Not a welcome notion in Calvinist Northern Scotland (or many other places, for that matter), the setting for the story. It was interesting to see how von Trier's much-touted (by the actors) commitment to improvisation allowed last-minute script changes -- and there were many. The book is beautifully assembled, translated gracefully from the original Danish. It's definitely great.

Required Reading.......2003-12-16
The latest title in the ongoing University of Mississippi Conversations With Filmmakers series complies interviews with noted director and enfant terrible Lars Von Trier. This book is a fine addition to any film library, and shows us a great deal about Von Trier. It stops with "Dancer In The Dark" and does not cover "Dogville." As of yet, the U of M press does not issue revised or updated editions of their books, so do not expect to see a second edition. Otherwise, this book does well in digging up obscure interviews (several never published before and others translated from the original language for the first time)and establishing a solid chronology to work with. The book even contains an interview with Von Trier when he was a young child actor (the lead role, of course) on a popular television show.
It makes one happy to see the University of Mississippi press publishing this volume on a truly unique filmmaker, as opposed to pretentious bourgeois "mainstream" directors like Quentin Tarantino and Stephen Soderbergh (both who hold titles in the collection-- how regretful). One learns through reading Von Trier's philosophy on filmmaking that he is indeed a great thinker.

The first full-length biography of Coleman Hawkins
Customer Reviews:
An amazingly comprehensive study.......2004-06-16
John Chilton IS a professional jazz musician as well as a Coleman Hawkins fan (who could not be). Another reviewer has criticized the criticism for not being critical; I wish to criticize him! First off as a pioneer, Hawkins had NO contemporaries at the start of his career. Few reviews are gushing with praise, there are plenty of recordings that are (dare I use the word) criticized. What makes this book so great is the thoroughness: nearly every detail in a HUGE catalog of recordings is discussed. Many of the recordings are obscure and often out of print, yet I could only find a few he missed. I've had a great time reading his thoughts on a track and then going back and listening for the points mentioned. I've read many jazz musicians' biographies, this is my favorite. While it adequately covers the personal details, the focus is on the music. If I had any criticism at all, it would be that it's maybe a little too unemotionally scholastic.
Fun, but uncriticizing worship.......2002-02-18
This is a very entertaining book about this groundbreaking saxophone stylist. However, the analyses of his recordings are kind of nonsense. The author himself isn't a musician instead of a devoted fan? The author does not compare the Hawk with other players of the era very critically, ie. based on musical facts. Still, a very readable book.

A Strange Mix of Statistics and Superstition.......2002-02-04
I bought this book on in an airport and enjoyed it. I got me interested in learning how to play blackjack correctly, so, in that sense, it was great. It's relatively clear and geared toward the beginner. The mathematical focus of some sections made the strategies more easy to understand. The problem with this book, however, is that it sometimes rejects the correct play. If you are ahead in the count, keep playing. Leaving the table, even when you're losing, basically amounts to wasting all the effort you put into counting. Also, streak betting is just plain superstition. If you can count, this information is more valuable than the tendancy for streaks to indicate a favorable count. Finally, If somebody at the table doesn't make the correct plays, you don't have to leave. It is just as likely to help as to hurt you. It was ok, but I'm sure there are better books than this.
Learn to Win @ Blackjack.......2002-01-19
Tamburin gives you the three steps (The Play, The Betting & The Card Count) necessary to win. He also gives you the easier approach and the better, harder approach. Explanation of the true count calculation was harder than it should have been, but otherwise an excellent book. Has greatly improved my game. I now win more than I lose.
Take the money and run.......2001-01-10
Fantastic book!. Since I've bought it, I have stepped away from a Casino, always as a winner. I am not a proffesional gambler, but I love to win some extra money when I visit a Casino. I am looking forward to buy the rest of Mr. Tamburin's books. He deserves it.
Take the Money and Run.......2000-01-26
Having never played blackjack at a casino I found this book highly informative and reader friendly. The author is very specific in his presentation of statistical analysis of the game and presents a plausible method for winning this game. However, the authors insitance that one leave the casino when they reach a certain level of winnings is clearly a gamblers fallacy and leads me to question the accuracy of his stated statistics. The truth is that the statistics should never vary according to an individual player's win or loss streak. A 65% probability is a 65% probability. The author claims to feel better when he leaves a winner. How bizarre this seems for a man who claims to be a "professional" gambler.
His proposition is that somehow taking a break from the game increases one's odds of winning. Nothing could be futher from statistical truth. If in fact as he states that card counting gives a player a 1-2% edge then logic dictates that playing continuosly is the way to maximiz one's profits.
One must test his propositions in order to feel comfortable using these card counting strategies.
incredible book!.......1999-02-26
I have read this book about a year ago and used the guides in the back, well, I had such good success with it I continued to use what I learned. Unfortunately, I listened to the other so called experts and the say my techniques were wrong. I changed the way I played and continued to listen to the other and lost more money than I won. I bought your book once again and read it front to back and used my techniques that I developed and threw out the critics views. I strongly urge those who want an upper hand at the blackjack tables to read, memorize, and to sleep with this book under thier pillows.

How to do it like Trump¿from start to finish
This is the first real estate investing book to reveal the principles and strategies of the world¿s most famous real estate developer¿Donald Trump. Author George Ross is Trump¿s celebrity costar on the hit TV show, The Apprentice, and has been Trump¿s right-hand man and business advisor for 25 years. Ross has advised Trump on all of his most famous real estate deals including Trump Tower on 5th Avenue and the Grand Hyatt on 42nd Street. In this book, Ross explains the core real estate investing and negotiation strategies Trump used to make his fortune, and how any investor can apply these strategies to their own real estate investments.
Small investors may not buy land on 5th Avenue, but the same principles Trump used to negotiate the purchase of his Trump Tower site apply to any real estate investor who wants to use Trump-style negotiation principles to buy property for below-market value. The small investor buying a fixer-upper may not have Trump¿s budget for marble and gold-tinted windows, but this book explains how to add "Trump-style glamour" to any fixer-upper¿and charge tenants and buyers a hefty premium they will willingly pay. Other key "Trump Strategies for Real Estate" include:
- Think huge; change the way your property is used and valued for maximum ROI
- Use showmanship to get higher rents and sale prices for your properties
- Be willing to overpay for a prime location, if it will get you prime tenants.
- There is no "right price" for the wrong property
- Personal relationships and loyalty are the foundation of a long-term investing career
From the search for the right property to "cashing out" of a property, this book has it all.

i suggest you read it if you intrested in investment.
Great!!.......2007-08-31
This book is very informative about how to change your thinking as well as your practices when it comes to real estate. Very great book for a begginner investor.
George is great!.......2007-05-12
This book is great for somebody looking to find the 'big picture' in real estate, with some very helpful thoughts to guide decisions. Working in real estate, I have already used much of the advice in this book with my real estate clients with great success. Though not all thoughts apply to my area, the book as a whole was a great read.
Very good book.......2006-12-26
I've been in real estate for 12 years and this is one of the few books worth buying and keeping in your library. Many of the things I already knew, but it's good to have this as a source of reference. I like the info on negotiation and research (the party that spends the most time/energy on project tends to want to complete the transaction). Trump believes in hiring the best experts available and "value added," which is another way saying adding glitz to his properties. The author is also right on when he states that most people take the path of least resistance. I agreed with 90% of what the author wrote about.
Good reading.......2006-09-06
You know, if you want to be the best, you need to learn from the best. George & Donald are the pinnacles of success in the real estate business. George Ross presents how things work with him & Donald in the business world, from his perspective. I highly recommend it. I have far more respect for George now after reading this book.
