Book Description
First published in 1988, The Women Who Knew Too Much remains a classic work in film theory and criticism. The book consists of a theoretical introduction and analyses of seven important films by Alfred Hitchcock, each of which provides a basis for an analysis of the female spectator as well as of the male spectator. Modleski considers the emotional and psychic investments of men and women in female characters whose stories often undermine the mastery of the cinematic Master of Suspense. This new edition features a new chapter which considers the last 15 years of Hitchcock criticism as it relates to the ideas in this landmark book.

A unique and important work of film theory for college-level students .......2006-01-09
The Women Who Knew Too Much: Hitchcock And Feminist Theory first appeared in 1988, but it remains a unique and important work of film theory for college-level students today and its reprint edition assures libraries with solid film analysis holdings will still have access. Hitchcock fans receive critical insights on seven important films, each of which serves as a foundation for an analysis of spectators of both sexes. This updated second edition includes a new chapter surveying the last 15 years of Hitchcock and adds further food for thought.
read it with a grain of salt.......2001-07-25
This book is skewed heavily toward a radical feminist perspective. I guess by that I mean that the author always seems ready to interpret a film as being hostile toward women. I consider myself a feminist, and heaven knows I am no apologist for Hitchcock in his attitude toward, and treatment of, women; but I also refuse to hate or blame men for every ill in the female cosmos. While one could make the case that Hollywood has institutionalized misogyny, and that the strong female roles of the 40s have been replaced to a large extent by roles as prostitutes and crime victims, sometimes the specific conclusions Ms. Modleski reaches are just plain loopy. Other times I think she adds great insight to her observations about the films of one the most talented directors ever.
You just have to read the book knowing that the author does have a strong viewpoint and may not always present a balanced perspective.
The author examines seven films: Blackmail, Murder!, Rebecca, Notorious, Rear Window, Vertigo and Frenzy.
This is a book worth reading, particularly if you are a film (or especially Hitchcock) fan. But you should be aware that this author has an agenda to put forward, and sometimes she doesn't let common sense, or the facts, get in her way. This kind of a book can be very rewarding, but you have to put more effort into the reading of it -- not just reading what the author says, but trying to understand why the author says it. In this sense it is also a good introduction to feminist film theory.
Great Primer for considering the place of women in film.......2001-05-31
This book was assigned reading for a Hitchcock class at NYU. I thoroughly enjoyed its even-handed approach to pondering the great film auteur's perspective on women as expressed in his films and the place of women in American films in general.
Although I might disagree with about 5-10% of her conclusions, I would still highly recommend this study.
A feminist reading of seven of Hitchcock's films........1997-12-17
A fascinating though dense read for people interested in women's studies or Hitchcock. It ain't easy reading, but Modleski's perspectives of some of Hitch's best work (as seen through the lens of feminist criticism) is worth the struggle.
Book Description
This groundbreaking book offers a new perspective on a central group of music theory treatises that have long formed a background to the study of Renaissance music. Taking theorists' music examples as a point of departure, it explores fundamental questions about how music was read, and by whom, situating the reading in specific cultural contexts. In particular it illuminates the ways in which the choices of Renaissance theorists have shaped later interpretation of earlier praxis, and reflexively the ways in which modern theory has been mapped on to that practice.

dynamite comes in small packages.......2007-01-13
Though its` title says "improve", the book is in part meant for budding experts. Most of the book is geared towards intermediate level players. There is a wealth of information on the doubling cube in match play(very interesting). Money games are not forgotten and Mr. Lamford explains the use of modern computers for both gaming and match play. He also uses exercises to gauge your understanding. Even with parts aimed at experts, it will still teach what needs to be learned to go from mid level to an advanced one, both easily and naturally. The amount of knowledge in this "little" book is unexcelled and NEEDS to be in every players library. the value of this book cannot be understated and is worth far and away more than the few pennies the book costs. May you get the same pleasure I`ve received (or more).

Appropriate Title - Manager's Primer.......2007-09-17
Many organizations fail to appreciate the breadth of the channel that must be navigated when a doer becomes a manager. These organizations and the people they promote as first-time managers should appreciate the wisdom contained in this book. The 5th edition of this plus 25 year-old classic still provides useful guidance for today's first-time manager. From its opening section - "So You're Going to Manage People", to the closing - "The Complete Person", this manual supplies useful instruction on the many facets of managing people.
Given the breadth of the book's coverage, the authors necessarily assume a stable company environment, something that may not entirely fit the fast moving pace of today's organizations. But, a first-time manager must start somewhere and this is a good manual for that overview. I suggest that it be read in conjunction with one of the several books resulting from The Gallup Organization's in-depth studies of the keys to being a great manager, the best of which may be the recently published, "12 The Elements of Great Managing" by Wagner & Harter. Read this one first, and then see how it meshes with the framework provided by the Gallup authors. Dennis DeWilde, Author of "The Performance Connection"
Good Concepts for New Managers.......2007-06-10
Great common sense concepts for new managers. A good primer on motivation and basic management skills. As a follow-up for more in-depth advice I would read Warriors, Workers, Whiners, & Weasels: Understanding and Using The Four Personality Types To Your Advantage
Horrid and Obvious.......2007-05-16
I would avoid this book at all costs. If you must use it, then just focus on the outline/table of contents - that's all the information you will need, and you're not going to find anything in the body text that will expand your understanding of those headings in any meaningful sort of way.
The actual text of the book is simplistic, states the obvious, and is riddled with cliches. Example:
"Never say or do anything that will make the employee feel inadequate. You want to build confidence, not destroy it. If you get pleasure from making team members feel foolish, then you'd better start examining your own motives, because you can't build yourself up by tearing someone else down."
That's just part of page 16. And it doesn't get any better.
It reads as if it were written by someone who was breaking their arms patting themselves on their own back when really they were just getting a gold star for not missing the bus for the past week. The "conversational" style feels more like an IM log than an actual book that somehow made it into print. This book is similar to receiving instructions on how to tie your shoes from a 6 year old - they're eager to tell you all that they know, think they have all the answers, and want glorious praise for their revelations... but the information being transmitted is stale at best and nothing you haven't already known for years, just by virtue of being human (and/or not being addicted to velcro shoes or moccasins).
The headings are fine pointers to keep in mind, but they could fit on one or two pages. The text of the book is the worst reading experience I've had since post-book 4 Harry Potter and the Eragon series.
To quote Dorothy Parker, this is not a book to be put down lightly; it should be hurled with great force.
Better books available.......2007-03-23
I didn't enjoy reading this book. I found it to be too dry and very structured. Useful ideas but not m cup of tea.
Absolute must read for new managers.......2006-11-14
This is a fantastic read for the first time manager. No matter what industry you are in, this is the book on how to manage people. You will learn management types and avoid mistakes first time managers make. This is comprehensive book that will show you how to interview job applicants, discipline staff based on their existing work ethics (lifelong slacker, vs. occasional slip up) and how to keep imporving oneself as a manager too because like everythign in life, that is work in progress...
I have read the fifth edition of this book and it is a true gem.

Excellent Guide!.......2006-06-15
I'm an independent trainer and often look for resources that can keep me on top of my game. I have a library of training books -- some very comprehensive; some with only a few chapters of information that I can use. This book concisely covers mostly everything that I need to know as an experienced trainer. It's also a useful guide for new trainers or those who facilitate learning. Every bit of it was useful. If you need a good book to add to your own reference library, I would highly recommend it.
Not bad for novices.......2002-02-10
A good resource that covers everything from Facilitation to Techniques passing through evaluation and personal development. If you are a beginner or you are asked frequently to help other beginner-level trainers, then you would probably benefit from this book.
The Book is written in an easy and simple style that takes the reader through the different aspects of training logically and smoothly.
Solid, If Dry, Guide for the First Time Trainer.......2000-10-29
This is a reasonable summary of current techniques and strategies for training. The writing is a bit dry, and I got the feeling that this book was oriented towards human resources professionals. There is nothing wrong with that, but my preference is for a less academic style of writing. Still, it's not a bad choice, just not one of my favorites.

Bird's Eye View for Newbies.......2006-12-08
After reading a quick snippet on Eric's book in the paper, we ordered a copy to preview for possible use. I am the Dean of Students for a Quick-Service restaurant company with 100+ stores. We are always on the look out for books to use in courses or even just to add to our "Suggested Reading List."
Eric's book is a quick read that gives a bird's eye view to new managers. This book would be helpful for people who are just kicking off their career and need a quick reference guide on what to expect.
The book is written with humor and insight that makes it enjoyable.
Having this on the shelf of a new manager's office alongside some deeper reference guides and a Rolodex for the suggested resources.
As a member of HR, I think Eric did a good job at pointing out how helpful that resource can be with dealing with employee concerns.

Good advice to plan and overcome a surely trying period.......1999-03-11
It's always scary changing jobs or careers. I'm a Naval Officer with some very solid management experience. I'm leaving military service for a private sector job and I was extremely impressed with the systematic and thourough preparation this book gives you. It was definitely a "glad I read" it book!
Customer Reviews:
Good primer...30 years ago.......2001-10-24
As a first time sales manager, I was immediately drawn to the title of the book. After reading it, I was disappointed that the published date was simply the most recent edition date. The core of the book was written decades ago.
As a result, other than some very general good advice about a manager's job being to coach and develop sales talent, the book is not useful. To give you an example, it goes into detail about keeping index cards and how a real go-getter salesperson will always be seen in a phone booth contacting clients!
I will research the original publication date of business books more carefully next time.
not bad.......2000-03-25
i had read this book 6 years ago when i was an mba student taking a class on sales management. i consult now for a large consumer group company in the gulf for their marketing and sales group. i thus decided to re-acquaint myself with the book and im glad i did. the ideas and suggestions in the book were helpful in promoting ideas to the first time sales managers. i suggested that the company read the book to get a general idea of the complexities of promoting sales people to management positions. especially on the part of sales force appraisals, the objective is for the field manager to help each sales rep achieve objectives and you cant do it in the office. the field is where its at as the book firmly states. i just wish that there was a newer edition with the advent of technology.
