I bought this book for my boyfriend. He loves Frank Sinatra. I gave it to him at Christmas along with a fedora (like Frank wears on the cover of the book). He read the whole book on Christmas. He said it was great!

However,it does help if you have some background of Sinatra to appreciate it fully.

...don't read the dang book!
Sinatra's place in our cultural history is so much admired, to the point of worship, that one group tolerates no criticism of him at all. And there are those just as happy to see anything which demolishes his legend, taking him down to the petty, nasty, egomaniacal person he was.
This book fits much more into the first category, for sure. Lots of pictures. A whole chapter titled "Broads."
So, what's not to like? Sinatra was not as nasty a father as, say, Bing Crosby, but he is quoted in the book as saying this:
"You've got to hug your kids. Kids ought to be hugged and kissed and all that good stuff. You have to stay close to them closer than ever. You must give them affection and love, or they break away."

There are obviously a lot of people out there who love hating Frank Sinatra.Kitty Kelly writes a filthy book thousands of Sinatra-haters swoon over,and Bill Zehme writes a fabulous book for the FANS that everyone complains about.Maybe Zehme's stories aren't all true.At least HE puts in the "alledgedly."
In any case-it's a beautiful book.It's an appreciation of an undeniably tremendous life and way of life,and on those grounds,it succeeds all the way.Yes,it does tend to gloss over the Mob relations and those legends of cruelty that have persisted so long.His Way glossed over the innumerable charitable acts and legends of kindness that have persisted so long.What do YOU want to believe?
Even if you're one of those idiot Sinatra haters,you gotta admit this is one entertaining book.Many of the anecdotes are hilarious(Rat Pack) and the sadder ones(Ava,ect.)are seemingly truthful and well-written.I do admit,I've heard most of these stories from a different source,and often in a different and darker light than taken here,but they're still the same facts,and VERY entertaingly recounted.
If you start this book prejudiced by that sad,monstrous image many of those dish-the-dirt biographies have painted of Sinatra,sure,you're gonna complain just like the rest-you want the TRUTH.What,may I ask,IS the truth?Like I said before,too many people love to hate their idols.Biographers have tried to tear down Marilyn Monroe,Elizabeth Taylor,the Kennedys,Rock Hudson,James Dean,Ava Gardner,Cary Grant,Joan Crawford,Judy Garland,Betty Davis, and are probably working on inventing a juicy scandal for Jimmy Stewart,but Frank Sinatra has been these rats' favorite target since he socked Lee Mortimer in 1947.There were not two Sinatras.You can either believe the scandal sheets and gossippy headlines that made the authors a ton of money and made Frank Sinatra the Monster that sells papers,or,you can belive this.A human,funny,admiring portrait of a VERY human man.The Frank Sinatra here is not the vicious loser described so cruelly by Kitty Kelly,but he's not an angel either.He's a person, who's supreme talent and famous controversy made a Legend.A generous,thoughtful,intelligent individual,who undoubtedly made more than his share of mistakes,but more than made up for them.Bill Zehme's miraculous book may not tell the WHOLE story,but it comes closer than anything I've ever read.I guess no one ever knew or will know exactly WHO Sinatra was.I suppose the only chance of that died when Sinatra did.But the world has its pick of possible Sinatras.And this is the best one of them all.A truly magnificent book.

Performance in America demonstrates the vital importance of the performing arts to contemporary U.S. culture. Looking at a series of specific performances mounted between 1994 and 2004, well-known performance studies scholar David Román challenges the belief that theatre, dance, and live music are marginal art forms in the United States. He describes the crucial role that the performing arts play in local, regional, and national communities, emphasizing the power of live performance, particularly its immediacy and capacity to create a dialogue between artists and audiences. Román draws attention to the ways that the performing arts provide unique perspectives on many of the most pressing concerns within American studies: questions about history and politics, citizenship and society, and culture and nation.
The performances that Román analyzes range from localized community-based arts events to full-scale Broadway productions and from the controversial works of established artists such as Tony Kushner to those of emerging artists. Román considers dances produced by the choreographers Bill T. Jones and Neil Greenberg in the mid-1990s as new aids treatments became available and the aids crisis was reconfigured; a production of the Asian American playwright Chay Yew’s A Beautiful Country in a high-school auditorium in Los Angeles’s Chinatown; and Latino performer John Leguizamo’s one-man Broadway show Freak. He examines the revival of theatrical legacies by female impersonators and the resurgence of cabaret in New York City. Román also looks at how the performing arts have responded to 9/11, the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, and the second war in Iraq. I absolutely loved this book! It has fun and challenging games for all types of people. Some of the games are classics, others are twists on classic games (such as a maze in the shape of a fingerprint, or oddly shaped crosswords with modified rules),and still others are completely original. The original games are brilliant, and so are the modifications they've made on some of the old favorites. Every kind of puzzle is in this book: observation puzzles, math puzzles, riddles, word games, mazes, logic problems, crosswords, trivia, and more. They range from quite easy to nearly impossible, but they are all on an adult level. Make sure you read the instructions to each game carefully, or you'll end up pretty confused. I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who loves games, no matter what type of games they love.

This is an excellent compilation of puzzles that you would normally find in the magazine. They range from easy to very challenging. Great for travellers, commuters, or just sitting around with nothing to do. The hours fly by as you get sucked into some of the puzzles.

A Great Investor Pulls Back the Veil on One of the Best Run Endowments.......2007-01-17
Swensen is certainly one of the brightest minds in institutional money management. In a world where there are ten million books on how to pick stocks, trade options, or some other get rich quick scheme, finally a great investor shows the methodology of how significant wealth should be managed. This book is a must read for anyone who manages or invests significant money, even if it isn't institutional assets.

This book has very little to teach you and it's virtually unreadable. Make sure you read one or two pages before you buy in case you are like me and you can't stand his style.
Great, but Swensen's New Book is Better.......2006-01-19
This book covers the HOW and WHY of diversification. While everyone claims to understand diversification, there have been few individuals or institutions that have actually applied the concepts as well as Swensen.
This book can be a little dry and is geared (in style) more towards institutional investors. His new book "Unconventional Success : A Fundamental Approach to Personal Investment" has all the same lessons but is MUCH MORE readable. Get that book instead: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0743228383/
solid primer on institutional money management.......2005-09-15
Swenson's reputation was made by the investment results he has generated, which in turn are based on good insights and steely discipline in managing a portfolio. That said, he could have used an editor on this book. His prose style is almost a mockery of a business presentation - here's what he's going to say, he says it, and then a recap of what he said. Still, his style, with its absolute emphasis on clearly communicating to the reader, is a huge improvement over quasi-academic articles in the Journal of Finance.
Equity bias and diversification - what's new there? Try the new lengths to which Swenson has taken portoflio diversification, and thus he has been able to afford an otherwise unsustainable level of investment in equities. Despite my comments on his style, the chapters on traditional and alternative asset classes can and should be read reptitively. (For fun, simultaeneously flip through _Triumph of the Optimists_, a historical survey of global markets.)
To my mind, the greatest problem fiduciaries seem to have is in staying consistent and disciplined in their approach to markets. While Swenson makes frequent tangential forays into describing the problem and how it manifests, this book on portfolio management would have benefited from a chapter on how to manage an investment team. Clearly stated objectives, consistent application, independence from portfolio managers, individual responsibilities vs. committee consensus, recruiting the right people...there is certainly enough there for a good chapter. The closing chapter on "Investment Process" is a valuable contribution, but it left me wanting to know more.
If you like his institutional book, you will also want to read his book for individual investors, called _Unconventional Success: A Fundamental Approach to Personal Investment_. Swenson shows his flexibility in approach, arguing that individuals should save and invest in ways very different from those he advocates for institutions.
As for _Pioneering Portfolio Management_, buy it, read it, and be a better fiduciary.
Worthwhile addition to your investment library.......2004-12-27
Fine book, it is full of common sense and worth reading. Author covers a variety of topics, from different investment periods of high inflation to stock market bubbles, large cap equities to hedge funds, asset allocation to market timing, active management to passive management...
Book highlights include:
