Duke: We're Glad We Knew You: John Wayne's Friends and Colleagues Remember His Remarkable Life
ASIN: 078641779X |
Book Description
Decades after his death, annual Gallop polls reveal that Marion Morrison is still firmly implanted among the top-ten favorite motion picture celebrities and American heroes. Most of us know this box office star as John Wayne. This comprehensive volume covers his expansive film career, from 1926 to 1976.
Listed in alphabetical order are entries on films such as Angel and the Badman and Noah's Ark that exemplify the more than 170 films that the actor worked on. Each entry includes the film's date, run time, cast and crew credits, reviews, and a synopsis. Also under each entry is a special section devoted to rare information and interesting details such as where the productions were shot, budgets, costs, salaries, box-office performance, alternate casting and what competition existed for the moviegoer audience. Also included in this reference work are over 650 capsule biographies of the talent that shared the screen with the actor and worked on the productions, and over 800 contemporary reviews and commentary from such diverse sources as The New York Times, Hollywood Reporter, and Life Magazine. There is a series of five helpful Appendices: Appendix A lists films by order of their release dates; Appendix B lists Wayne's fellow actors and colleagues and tells under which entry the relevant capsule biography may be located; Appendix C offers specific review information for the films; Appendix D provides facts on the biggest box office films; and Appendix E details the most popular films on television.

Superb John Wayne book.......2005-04-23
Where has this book been? One of the most comprehensive books on the Duke I've been able to add to my collection. Almost reads like a novel as there are so many behind the scenes tidbits like how much the Duke was paid for each picture, who the co-stars were and what happened to those actors later in their careers.
More good info on the Duke and Hollywood pictures than any other book I've come across, a must if you are a John Wayne fan!
Film Fan Favorite.......2004-07-17
An amazingly detailed and comprehensive guide to John Wayne's films. If you're a Wayne (or film fan) this is a must for your collection. Mr. Landesman has outdone himself with the amount of previously unavailable information in this book. Hope to see more from this informative author.

please do not buy this book.......2002-08-15
when i published this edition in 1997, it was useful for musicians trying to get their music played on radio. but the book is mostly a directory of contact information for radio stations, and a lot of this information has changed in the past five years. so be forewarned that most of the book's contents are out of date. thanks and best of luck. - gary hustwit.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MUSIC VETERAN SHARES RADIO-PLAY SECRETS.......2000-01-12
GETTING RADIO AIRPLAY codifies the procedures that many who record independently, such as singer/songwriters, bands, and their support people, quickly learn by experience: you send out review copies, then you follow up in a professional, organized manner, and then-sometimes-you get airplay. Hustwit, who has run an independent record label based in Southern California, unselfishly shares what he knows, including some good inside tips on promotion and publicity, and lists of key people and organizations who can help. Also valuable are interviews with folks who have experience and knowledge in the indie/college scene (independent labels and college radio stations). As daunting as the whole self-publicizing thing can seem, bands and artists can develop a plan and succeed, and Gary Hustwit's suggestions form a good platform from which to start. To his credit, he has continued to update this work. Be sure you are buying the 3rd edition, with a 1998 date of copyright. And remember this, too: significant income can be derived from turning one's music into a self-propelled record company, even if the world calls you "unsigned." Hustwit's related title, RELEASING AN INDEPENDENT RECORD, is his biggest seller. Ron Simpson, School of Music, Brigham Young University. Author of MASTERING THE MUSIC BUSINESS.
An O.K. primer.......1999-02-14
This book can give you some idea of how to go about getting airplay, but it is not the alpha and the omega on the subject. The interviews with music directors/DJ's/etc. give some insight into the "radio mind", and are interesting in that one often contradicts the next (!). The directory of US/Canadian radio stations has some useful information (frequency and wattage), but I found the address/phone/contact info to be incorrect more often than not.One can only hope that an author "in the know" will write a better book with more useful information for the self-release market.
Valuable tips for the Hip Hop Entrepreneur!.......1998-04-06
This book is one that we at nichemarket recommend highly in our Booklist for any Hip Hop Entrepreneur serious about a career in the music industry! --Walt Goodridge, President, Hip Hop Entrepreneur Association

Book Description
Here's a card-player's guide that covers virtually every aspect of poker, starting with a chapter that explains poker rules, then ranks and explains the value of poker hands, from Royal Flush to One Pair. The book goes on to discuss the game's mechanics, describing strategic concepts and explaining how knowledge of strategies separates casual from serious players. Chapters that follow instruct on how to assess differences between winning hands and bad hands, how to estimate odds, how and when to bluff, how to detect an opponent's bluff, and how and when to raise. Author and poker expert Lou Krieger concentrates on the five most popular poker games: Texas Hold 'em, Omaha, Omaha/8, Seven-card stud, and Seven-card/8. Final chapters tell where to find out more about poker, list good web sites for online play, and explain the jargon of betting terms. More than 300 color illustrations include examples that show common poker situations.
Customer Reviews:
Good basic book for beginners.......2005-03-07
For someone who's been playing friendly home game poker (i.e., spending time with friends drinking beer, smoking cigars around a card table) for a while but doesn't really have a foundation in the details of poker, this is a very good introduction. If you're a good experienced player who's looking for a more in depth analysis, this book isn't for you.
Although it's title is a bit much, Krieger's book provides the basics you need to know about the major variations of casino poker (holdem, 7 card stud, and Omaha). It provides good basic guidance regarding starting hands and the play throughout the game. The book doesn't exhaust the reader with overly complex "analysis" of variations of types of players and situations. While the better known books (Brunson, Sklansky et al) dive deeper into these areas, most people just need the fundementals that are in this book.
The book doesn't go into the issues tournament play; rather it focuses on the play of individual hands. There are plenty of good books (Cloutier) about tourney play that anyone who's seriously thinking about them should read.
A few minor issues. The book is organized a bit awkwardly. It discusses starting hand play for all types of poker, then middle play for all types etc. It would be much easier to read if Krieger had grouped all the discussion of Holdem in one section and done the same for Stud and Omaha. Some of the tables are a bit confusing. The table showing probabilites of making your hand on the turn or river in the holdem section is rather confusing. Last, there are several annoying typos in the book which are easy enough to deal with, but shouldn't be there. For example, in the listing playable suited connectors, it doesn't mention suited T-9 and the table showing the playable starting hands has a couple of typos as well.
Overall, a good intro to casino poker for beginners and home players.

Don't buy from college books direct.......2005-10-14
After ordering, I received a refund the next day. What is up with that?
Dishonesty.......2005-10-06
This product was purposely advertised under edition 11 while it is in actuality a 7th edition. Not only that, it is not even cost accounting but Financial accounting. To make matters worst the seller was not helpful at all and blamed everything on Amazon. I am doing my second masters and therefore not new to Amazon; so blaming such an institution is no justification for an inherent dishonesty. There was no CD package as well and therefore the only thing that matched to the discreption was the authors. Proof of this persons dishonesty is that on Amazon you can buy the same book he sold me at $2 while he sold (cheated) the book to me for $20 something. I strongly advise no one to buy from this person. If there was any lower rating than 1 I would definetly have given him that as rating "1" is too high of a scale for this persona.
Unhappy.......2005-09-26
The product has not arrived. I received an e-mail stating that it should arrive 9/22 or 9/23. As of 9/25, it has not arrived.
Cost Accounting Made Simple.......2005-04-26
The write ups are easy to follow and well written. The concepts of what I read is applicaple to real life environment. Chapters do not drag on - very concise. Good use of T accounting examples, etc. - I purchased the hardcover because it is something that I will keep in my library and refer back to after college is over.
katz.......2005-04-15
I am Chartered Management Accountant (CIMA) - intermediate student. I used this book for my professional qualification paper - Decision Making. This book is useful, but I have some reservations and therefore the rating 3/5. Some of my reservations are:
1.Unlike Drury's, Management and Cost Accounting, this book is almost all formula based. Almost everything is derived through formula and there is very little explanations on why the formula is structured in that way.
2. The chapter of Standard Costing and Analysis of Variance is frustrating. The author(s) doesn't cover all the variances under all the categories, namely material, labor, overhead and sales etc..,
3. At one point the book asks you to calculate the Break Even point under "Absorption Costing", but there is never a discussion of how to do it. You'll find this information in drury's text.
4. The excersise and problem sets are too simple for a professional level student. However the cases are great.
The plus points however are:
1. Great coverage of emerging practices in the profession
2. The companion CD is great source of sharpening your knowledge, and
3. The color presentation
Overall, the book rates below Colin Drury's bible book "Management and Cost Accounting". Therefore before spending $150 to buy this book, have a look at the bible book.

Could be better! Too few problems!.......2002-12-30
I used it for the cost accounting class and though I found it helpful, I thought that there were too few problems given in the study guide and the ones there did not really reflect on the ones in the textbook. The summaries were well written and an excellent tool for review, but I think the problems should correlate more with what is in the text. I did get A in the class, but I've seen better study guides. Accounting is all in practice, so problems are more important than the terminology.
Great study guide.......2002-09-26
I have used an earlier edition and thought it was great, but this one is even better. Easiy to follow and effectively packs a tremendous amount if information between the covers. It really makes a compex subject come into focus. Can't think of enough good things to say about this guide.

Learning Cost Accounting.......2002-09-03
Like math, the learning process for cost accounting is enhanced by working practice problems and applications. The Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis Student Guide and Review Manual provides excellent cost accounting material with solutions. I would recommend this guide to any student who is serious about learning and understanding the concepts presented in the related text book -- Cost Accounting, A Managerial Emphasis.
Great Study Guide for Cost Accounting!!!!.......2002-08-30
I used this book (a prior edition) in my cost accounting studies and I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to learn these methods at an accelerated pace. It is easy to read and comprehend and cuts through a lot of the confusion generated by less salient authors in the same discipline. I recommend this student study guide for purposes of demystifying the realm of cost accounting.
Customer Reviews:
No university/college should use this.............2007-08-19
I had to use this book for an online course while earning my bachelor's degree. This book was horrible. This group of 3 authors did not do a good job. The ideas and points did not run smoothly together from one point to another. It seems like the 3 authors did not work very close together to make sure their ideas connected and related directly with each other's ideas. It was as if the authors went from talking about point A, skipping all the way to point F, then going to point C, then back to point F, etc. etc. Their ideas did not flow in an understandable sequence. I also agree about the examples. The examples were no help and they were not thorough examples of material that you would run into the real-world. The examples needed much more details in them.
Huge waste of money.......2007-07-06
Horngren makes a notoriously dry subject even worse. It is filled with long winded verse and practically devoid of dynamic examples. Accounting is something that 'works' and can be worked out. It's best learned when applied to real world situations...this book aims to have you memorize boring definitions and then support those definitions with scarce examples. Even our professor said he's been lobbying to get this book out of my school's curriculum...too bad that didn't happen BEFORE I came along.
Introduction to Management Accounting.......2007-02-19
This book was not at all what I expected and was not very useful.
Introdution to management accouting.......2006-09-02
Very good. Cover is a little worn. Some pages have been written by pencil.
Used in MBA program - Intro to Accounting.......2006-04-06
I have had experience with accounting and found this book to be fairly basic. However, if you are a beginner with no knowledge of accounting, this is a good textbook. I read one of the other reviews about how there is a bunch of useless junk on each page and while this is partially true, it would be UNBEARABLE to read if there wasn't this so called "junk" on every page. Overall a good textbook that I will keep around as a reference for accounting basics.
