Book Description
The ultimate book for every Star Wars(r) fan.
Experience the Star Wars universe as never before in this stunning visual journey that carries you to the farthest reaches--and into the deepest mysteries--of George Lucas's cinematic masterpiece. Ralph McQuarrie, the legendary main concept artist for all three Star Wars films, and Kevin J. Anderson, the New York Times bestselling Star Wars author, present the ultimate voyage: a vivid and close-up look at the exotic worlds and remarkable inhabitants of the Star Wars universe.
The breathtaking artwork of McQuarrie and Anderson's delightful text are your guide to eight different Star Wars locales. Here, detailed as never before, are the worlds of Tatooine, the stark desert home planet of Luke Skywalker; Coruscant, the glorious center of the Empire; Dagobah, the swampy world of Yoda; Bespin, site of the famed floating metropolis of Cloud City; Endor, the forest moon sheltering the Ewoks; Hoth, the frozen wasteland and site of a secret Rebel base; Yavin 4, the jungle moon, nearly destroyed by the first Death Star; and Alderaan, Princess Leia's homeworld, cruelly annihilated by the same Death Star. Each world is lavishly illustrated and described by a qualified expert, including scientists, scouts, soldiers, poets, and even Imperial agents. The Illustrated Star Wars Universe is an epic achievement, a visionary treat no Star Wars fan will want to miss--and a true collector's item you'll enjoy for years to come.

Entertaining travel guide to the Star Wars galaxy............2004-04-12
Take the artistic talents of acclaimed production artist Ralph McQuarrie and the writing skills of prolific author Kevin J. Anderson (The Jedi Academy Trilogy) and you get The Illustrated Star Wars Universe, a coffee table book that gives readers a glimpse of the various planets showcased in George Lucas' original Star Wars Trilogy (1977-83).
Using McQuarrie's production sketches and paintings for A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and other Lucasfilm projects (including the Endor-based television specials of the mid-1980s plus preliminary sketches for the 1997 Special Edition updates), Anderson takes readers on a grand tour of the most important planets seen in the Luke Skywalker/Darth Vader half of the Star Wars Saga. Starting with Tatooine, the desert world that is the home world to both Anakin Skywalker and his son Luke and ending with Alderaan, the planet where Princess Leia was hidden from her father and was doomed to be destroyed by the Death Star, eight planets are described in individual chapters, each told not by one omniscient narrator but by eight different observers, each with his or her point of view and/or political agenda.
For instance, while the chapter on Tatooine is an anthropologist's dispassionate and scientific report on the desert planet's hostile environment and its hardy inhabitants (ranging from the nomadic and hostile Tusken Raiders and scavenging Jawas to the resilient human moisture farmers and their homesteads), the description of Coruscant, the massive city-planet which was once the seat of power of the Old Republic and is the capital of Emperor Palpatine's Galactic Empire, is a pro-Imperial propaganda article authored by Pollus Hax, the Emperor's chief public relations expert and "spin doctor."
Although much of the artwork featured in The Illustrated Star Wars Universe has been published elsewhere (either in the various Art of Star Wars books relating to the Classic Trilogy or in McQuarrie's Star Wars Portfolios), this combination of production paintings and Anderson's vivid and imaginative text works wonderfully and adds detail and background to both the movies and the post-Episode VI Expanded Universe novels, including Anderson's own JedI Academy trilogy and Darksaber.

You feel inside this Universe.......2002-04-07
This incredible book help you feel like all the Star Wars universe and its planets are real. You read the accounts of the "writers" and you think that they really exists.
It helps to understand all the story and the beutiful pictures help to get into.
A MUST book for a Star Wars fan.
The writing is fogetable but the art is amazing.......2000-10-07
This book really showcases the beautiful artwork of Ralph McQuarrie, who helped establish the look of the Star Wars films way back at the dawn of the story as we know it. In this book we see fascinating early visual drafts of things that we would later see in the movies. Most of it was impossibly fantastic to ever get filmed at the time but maybe we'll see some of it in the next two movies.
The chapters on Alderan and Bespin are particular fascinating and beautiful.

In My Daughter's Eyes.......2007-06-11
This book/CD is absolutely amazing!! Even though my two daughters are grown, this is so appropriate and can be passed on to their children if they wish. This was not a gift for a specific event, just to show them how much they mean to me and what a blessing they are. Truly a wonderful gift for any mom to give to her daughter(s). Thank you.
Delightful Daughter Gift.......2007-02-15
What an absolutely delightful gift for my daughter! I gave it to her for Valentine's Day and she loves it. I couldn't resist, even though she's 28 now! Every time I hear Martina's song, In My Daughter's Eyes, tears fill my eyes so I had to share it with my girl and she thought it was the neatest gift. There is a place in the beginning of the book to put your daughter's photo and when my daughter saw the one I chose, her eyes filled with tears along with mine. A perfect way to share that mother-daughter bond no matter how old either of you are! I think this book/cd set is a terrific idea!
A Perfect Little Gift.......2007-01-11
This is the perfect gift to give your daughter for any special occassion: Sweet 16, her wedding day, when she has your grandchild, or just to say I love you! It is a touching little book with a CD of the song she can listen to over and over.

Book Description
My Daughter's Eyes and Other Stories, winner of the 2007 Mármol Prize, is a collection of fourteen interrelated stories about young Dominican women living in the Bronx as they deal with the choices they make in their everyday life. These stories span three decades, beginning in the 1970s, and their topics range from mother-daughter struggles, father-daughter betrayal, family, and child abuse, to emerging sexuality, love, loss, and healing.
Annecy Baez's daring treatment of taboo themes, such as sexual child abuse and the struggle of the individual against restrictive traditional values, makes this book unique in Dominican fiction.
Annecy Baez was born in the Dominican Republic and came to the United States when she was three years old. She was raised in the Bronx and currently lives in Irvington, New York. She is a poet and fiction writer, and her literary work has appeared in
Caudal, a Dominican journal;
Tertuliando/Hanging Out, a bilingual anthology; and
Callaloo. A psychotherapist by training, she holds a doctoral degree in clinical social work. Currently, she is the director of the Counseling Center at Lehman College and devotes her free time to writing.

An Intriguing Glimpse into the Lives of Dominican Women in the U.S........2007-08-08
Annecy Báez, recipient of the 2007 Miguel Mármol Prize, introduces us to a diverse array of intriguing characters in her debut work of prose. Masterfully woven, the short stories included in MY DAUGHTER'S EYES AND OTHER STORIES (Curbstone Press, ISBN: 978-1-931896-38-2, $15.00) trace the trials and triumphs of young women as they struggle to assimilate to American culture while staying constantly aware of their strict Dominican roots.
Set in the Bronx, the Dominican Republic, and New York State, MY DAUGHTER'S EYES brings us full circle as we watch these young female relatives and friends become adolescents, women, and eventually mothers. Báez's characters are caught in cultural limbo, striving to experience the independence American women sought in the 1970s while pressured to be virtuous Catholic Dominican girls.
The urban environment challenges these young women, in time building their strength and resilience. Báez works teenage pregnancy, child abuse, developing sexuality, and identity issues flawlessly into her narrative, bridging the fourteen stories into one carefully crafted novel-esque piece.
Conflict between the main protagonist, Mia, and her father sends her into a deeply introverted state. Pensively exploring the role of women in society, Mia turns to a spiritual advisor for guidance and finds healing through meditation.
While failed relationships and dishonesty plague the women around her, Mia remains courageous and secure in the identity she has built, removing herself from unpleasant circumstances. Mia, along with the other female protagonists, are ultimately able to create a balance between the culture of their elders and that of American society, utilizing their personal experiences to create valuable parental insight. Ultimately, the individual will conquers societal bounds in this wonderfully written, highly worthwhile read.

Book Description
A week after her birth, Dan Kennedy's daughter, Becky, was diagnosed with achondroplasia, the most common type of dwarfism. Reassured by doctors that Becky would have normal intelligence and life span, Kennedy and his wife quickly adjusted to the reality of her condition. Little People weaves the moving story of Kennedy's personal experiences with a fascinating investigation into dwarfism. Kennedy traces the attitudes toward dwarfs throughout history and describes with humor and compassion the difficulties little people face in a world designed for the 'average-sized.' In telling his story, Kennedy confronts the deepest of parental fears: What if my child is different? His search for an answer provides a penetrating look at how our culture of diversity-of respect for differences-clashes with the belief that we have a right to the so-called perfect child. Taking on the controversial issue of designer genetics, Kennedy argues that there is real cultural value to preserving differences and that eliminating them will harm society in unpredictable ways.
Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful book.......2006-09-26
I love this book, As a parent of a 14 month old boy with dwarfism, recently adopted from Liberia ( not yet home unfortunately) I've been trying to learn and read as much as I can about dwarfism. This is the first and only book ( so far)I've read on the subject. It is so well written and I love how he goes from his own personal story to many other personal stories of people with dwarfim.
Although I do not agree with his implied view of God and Biblical religion, I find his thoughts insightful and thought provoking. I have bought 2 more of these books to give as gifts this year.
Thank you Dan Kennedy!
An open and honest memoir and social commentary.......2005-02-25
Dan Kennedy author grapples honestly and agonizingly with the conflict between our culture of diversity, the reality of disability, and every parent's wish for a healthy typical child. With its intertwining of memoir and social commentary, it is at once a captivating and enlightening read skillfully crafted by award wining journalist Dan Kennedy.
The author's purpose is to find purpose and meaning in his daughter's life. He was determined for it to be positive and upbeat. Meanwhile his wife was more focused on her daughter's day to day care including the medical crisis of her early life when Becky was near death and required a tracheotomy to survive. The author's honest acknowledgment of these divergent viewpoints is but one example of his penetrating insight into the complexities of his family life.
The reader is challenged to consider the contrast between genetic difference and genetic defect in a society which says that differences are good and defects are bad. Can one person's defect be another person's difference? What are the moral and ethical implications of eliminating differences ranging from dwarfism to Down syndrome and beyond to manic depression, homosexuality, etc. through designer genetics? What will be the impact upon society? Kennedy explores dwarfism from ancient times, when dwarfs were revered in some cultures, to modern eras where they were featured in freak shows and treated as guinea pigs by Nazi scientists. Through a historical perspective he helps the reader to grasp that there has never been a better time to be outside the mainstream and to embrace one's identity-whether one is physically or mentally challenged or gay. Yet most parents do not wish these differences for their children, and the Kennedys would not have chosen dwarfism for their daughter.
The disability consciousness of our present era sprang to life in the second half of the twentieth century on the ashes of Dachau and Auschwitz, where millions of Jews, homosexuals, and people with disabilities were exterminated. As an antidote to American self-righteousness, the author reminds us of the eugenics movement which was led by the United States and Great Britain in the early part of the twentieth century and mandated the sterilization of people with mental retardation and mental illness. The Nazis of course took this a giant step further because there was no respect for individual rights or checks and balances to keep eugenic impulses at least in some control.
Throughout the book, Kennedy helps us to visit his conundrum where he is held in the grip of two opposing ideas-that, on the one hand, his child is imperfect and different and will always be, while on the other hand, Becky is perfect just as she is. As the parent of an adult child with autism, I understand Kennedy's dilemma all to well. It is a Rubik's cube for a society that includes and celebrates differences-where the solutions to the puzzle are individual and unique. Through his involvement with the Little People of America and his vivid accounts of interviews with numerous adult dwarfs, Kennedy leads his reader to a deeper appreciation for diversity.
As a fellow parent and writer, what I value most about Little People is the author's openness and integrity in looking at the hard facts of his family's life. He does not escape for long into the world of intellect and social commentary. He does not deny how hard it can be to care for the needs of a sick child, particularly on his wife, Barbara, who he observes to have some symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder even years after Becky could breathe on her own. As a father, when he tells Becky, that there is nothing wrong with being a dwarf, it doesn't ring true for her. Her differences are a problem for her in navigating the world such as when younger children don't believe she is older than them or when she imagines who will want to date her. So there are no easy answers, no platitudes to hide behind-Kennedy is left with the simple and profound challenge to just be the best father he can for Becky. And his readers are left with a dose of compassion and shared wisdom.

Little People by Dan Kennedy.......2003-12-08
A well-written and interesting look at the human side of dwarfism, including dwarfism's repercussions to the individual and family members. Author Dan Kennedy has made a concerted effort to include as many facets of dwarfism as possible, things that others can never know without reading a book like this. This book is not just for little people themselves and families involved with dwarfism, but doctors and other healthcare professionals, teachers, therapists, and anyone interested in learning more about the strength of the human spirit. A very engaging and worthwhile book!
Little People.......2003-12-05
Dans book is a must read for anyone with an interest in Dwarfism, be it a family member, friend or collegue or just a general interest. There is something for everyone, the heartfelt journey of Dan`s daughter, Becky as she spends her early years hooked to machines due to her achondroplasia and her growth into a young woman continues throughout, and inbetween the reader is introduced to other topics relating to dwarfism including the history of dwarfism, the Little People of America, Medical Doctors, Religious questioning to name a few.
I found it hard to put the book down once I had started to read it. As an average height parent with a child with achondroplasia myself I found the book a very valuable read and I learnt a lot, the book also leads the way for further research if one so wishes.
Little People: A review.......2003-12-05
One month ago I bought this book here on Amazon and it was my intention to keep it on the bookshelf gathering dust until semester break when it would be my reading material for the flight home. I briefly cracked it open & thought I could peek at the opening paragraph just to get a sense of the book then put it down. WRONG! It sucked me in and for the next 2 days I ignored all my classwork in order to finish it. Without an ounce of hyperbole this is the best book about dwarfs & dwarfism, our community and our history I have read. It is well written, interesting, informative, and respectful but without ever inching towards the "Super-Crip" mentality so many books about people of difference tend to fall into.
This is a wonderful book and I encourage everyone to read it. When finished, I encourage people to pass it onto others who know nothing about dwarfism in order to teach people of our history. To those in school, pass it onto your office of students with disabilities and the professors who teach classes in multicultural issues. I hope that someday Becky will realize this is a love letter her father has written to and about her.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent source book.......2007-05-14
For those who love Stargate SG-1 and love to role play, then this book which includes the Season 2 plotlines, is for you!
NOT An Episode Guide--It's an RPG Supplement.......2004-10-22
Those of you idly browsing this site might stumble across the listing for this book and think, "Whoa, I gotta get this!" Well, perhaps you do. But be advised that this is NOT an episode guide per se, but rather a supplement for Alderac's Stargate SG-1 role playing game.
But before you click away in disappointment, you should know that the first half of the book does, in fact, have extensive recaps of each of the episodes of Season 2. It doesn't list cast or crew and it doesn't include commentary upon the making of the individual episodes or any critiques or "behind the scenes" information. But a wealth of information is certainly provided.
Granted, a lot of said information is basically made up, extrapolated from passing dialogue references or just created out of thin air. However, the background material (typically, a history of the visited planet and its people and details about their ethnic background and interactions with the Goa'uld and others) that does NOT come directly from the episode is tacked into a separate section after the recap. So the "bonus" stuff shouldn't be regarded as canonical, but it's interesting nonetheless.
There's also tons of stuff on NPCs, or, as non-gamers would know them within the show's context, recurring characters. So we have profiles on Martouf, Jacob Carter, Thor, Jolinar, Kasuf (the chieftain from Abydos), and Sha're. Of course, the question you're really dying to ask is: are Sgts. Davis (the gateroom tech) and Siler present? Yes. Yes, they are. Keep in mind, again, that what we are given in these sections is a mix of "real" history drawn directly from the show and then a bunch of stuff the game designers threw in on their own for flavor text.
Finally, there's material on the various alien races and their gear, and new character classes based on things seen in the Season 2 episodes (e.g. Goa'uld Assassin, Tok'ra Courier, et cetera).
It's well-organized and smartly written and has a good number of pictures. Alderac will produce one RPG supplement for each season. If you're a gamer and an avid SG-1 viewer, I would definitely recommend this. If you're too good for RPGs but you're still a hardcore SG-1 fanboy (or fangirl), you still might want to check this out just for its value as a pretty good episode guide. In short, Kree, Jaffa! That really has no bearing here, but I've always wanted to say it.
Book Description
Positioning, a concept developed by the authors, has changed the way people advertise. The reason? It's the first concept to deal with the problems of communicating in an overcommunicated society. With this approach, a company creates a 'position' in the prospect's mind, one that reflects the company's own strengths and weaknesses as well as those of its competitors. Witty and fast-paced, this book spells out how to position a leader so that it gets into the mind and stays there, position a follower in a way that finds a 'hole' not occupied by the leader, and avoid the pitfalls of letting a second product ride on the coattails of an established one. Revised to reflect significant developments in the five years since its original publication, Positioning reveals the fascinating case histories and anecdotes behind the campaigns of many stunning successes and failures in the world of advertising.

Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind, 20th Anniversary Edition (Purchased on 09/04/2007) .......2007-10-05
I still haven't received my purchase, so reviewing it will be a tad bit difficult...
Got inspired!.......2007-09-21
I've got inspired from the basics in positioning. It delivers good examples of many American companies' positioing. I got inspired so that I can get my paper done very soon.
The best book ever on marketing/advertising/brand management.......2007-09-13
I make every new employee read Positioning no matter what their job description because it is really a book about the "battle for the consumer's mind", and that battle is waged in every department of every organization.
Positioning is the rule book for marketing success and the great thing is all the examples. Yes they are somewhat dated, but they make the rules easy to understand.
This is the book nobody at Ford read before they redisigned the Taurus from number 1 in sales to a hole in the ground.
If you work in brand management or advertising you must read this book. It should be stashed in a "break-glass-get-book" thing at every exit of every ad agency.
If you are studying marketing at college, you should memorize every word in the book and major in something else, and come out with the equivalent of a double major.
The importance of perception.......2007-05-13
If there's one thing that makes Positioning a classic and something that should be on the reading list of any marketer is the fact that it highlights what is the core of any marketing- perception is reality. It doesn't matter how good your product `really' is, or how hard you try, what matters is how your target perceives you vs competition. That basic truth, and how you could occupy the most desired position in the target's mind is the crux of this book. Perhaps some of the examples could get updated, but bottom line, this is the definitive book to read for any aspiring marketer.
- Mainak Dhar, author, Brand Management 101: 101 Lessons from Real-World Marketing
outdated.......2007-03-30
Positioning makes a few basic points that are helpful for someone who is not familiar with marketing basics. However, the examples are so outdated that some now disprove the authors' arguments. The more detailed chapters make less sense in an electronic culture. This book is really only useful now for those broad, basic ideas in the first chapters.
