Book Description
The Cambridge Film Classics series provides a forum for the revisionist studies of the classic works of the cinematic canon from the perspective of the "new auteurism, " which recognizes that films emerge from a complex interaction of bureaucratic, technological, intellectual, cultural, and personal forces. Each volume provides a general introduction to the life and work of a particular director, followed by critical essays on several of the director's most important films, and a filmography.

Perfect Antonioni primer.......2006-03-10
Quite simply, this book is the perfect starting point for someone trying to understand the often-confusing and richly layered and textured films of Michelangelo Antonioni. Brunette devotes a chapter each to six of Antonioni's signature films: "L'avventura", "La notte", "L'eclisse", "Red Desert", "Blow-Up", and "The Passenger". While this list is far from comprehensive, it gives a very thorough analysis of the "classic Antonioni". Even those familiar with Antonioni will find this book to be very useful. An excellent addition to any film-lover's library, no matter if s/he is a novice or a film professor. Also look for Brunette on the commentary track of the "Blow-Up" DVD.

introduction.......2004-10-20
Michelangelo Antonioni needs no introduction.
What needs to be introduced here, is this excellent book by German editor Taschen. Taschen's extensive series on art-subjects all have the same characteristics: a great choice of pictures, very to-the-point comments, a well-reasoned lay out, and last but not least, a pretty modest price.
For instance, in the chapter on Antonioni's 1962-movie 'La notte' (= Italian for 'the night') the text in this book changes from black print on white sheet to white on black -- quite in style with Antonioni's strong visuals.
Another feature of this great Italian director is the minimal use of spoken words. Just watch and let your brains work, he tells us. So there's nothing left for me than to end my comments on this great book.

great critical review.......2001-06-09
This book is a critical review of the movie career of Antionioni. It helped me to understand the Great Teatrology of the Antonioni's work - L'Aventurra, La Notte, Eclipse and Red Desert much better. Director is researching the same themes of loneliness, impossibility of love and connections in the modern world full of dehumanizing technology. Landscapes and architecture, subtle variations of mood, breeze and movement ... and sadness.
I was amazed by Chatman's bibliography list. He'd read anything and everything there is to read about Antonioni. The books follow movies frame by frame with critical acclaim given to all aspects of Antonioni's art. Must read!!!

Book Description
The Italian art cinema of the 1960s is known worldwide for its brilliance and vitality. Yet rarely has this cinema been considered in relation to the profound economic and cultural changes that transformed Italy during the sixties--described as the “economic miracle.” Angelo Restivo argues for a completely new understanding of that cinema as a negotiation between a national aesthetic tradition of realism and a nascent postmodern image culture.
Restivo studies numerous films of the period, focusing mainly on the works of Pier Paolo Pasolini and Michelangelo Antonioni. He finds that these auteurs’ films reworked the neorealist aesthetic developed in the 1940s and 1950s, explored issues brought to the fore by the subsequent consumer boom, and presaged developments central to both critical theory and the visual arts in the 1980s and 1990s. Drawing on the theories of Lacan, Zizek, Benjamin, Foucault, Jameson, and Deleuze, he shines new light on such films as Pasolini’s Accattone and Teorema, and Antonioni’s Red Desert and Blow-Up. Restivo’s model for understanding the relationship of the 1960s Italian art film to its cultural contexts also has implications that extend to the developing national cinemas of countries such as Brazil and Taiwan.
The Cinema of Economic Miracles will interest scholars and students in all areas of film studies, especially those studying theories of the image, national cinema theory, and Italian cinema, and to those engaged in poststructuralist theory, philosophy, and comparative literature.

God on film........1999-10-12
As with each viewing of an Antonioni film (sans "Zabrieske Point"), the essays in this book make the reader appreciate and "understand" the films of Antonioni more.
Antonioni is a genius, and what he has to say about the process of filmmaking is essential to anyone who wishes to make a respectable film.
And for those of you are still begging to know: Antonioni explains how he made that-probably the greatest in film history-final tracking shot in "The Passenger". God, what a shot that is!

"Antonioni is one of the greatest living artists. As a director of film, his only living peer is Kurosawa, and . . . he is unmistakably the peer of the other great masters in all the arts." So spoke William Arrowsmith, the great critic and translator who, upon his death in 1992, left behind a series of unpublished lectures on the Italian master. Arrowsmith's lucid, creative, and passionately expressed lectures are an entertaining and immensely helpful guide through eight of Antonioni's most important films, including L'Avventura, Red Desert, Blow Up, and The Passenger. This book not only guides the reader through Antonioni's work, but also defends the cinema as an art as serious as any other.
Book Description
Celebrated critic William Arrowsmith did not sit on the fence when it came to Michelangelo Antonioni, the inspired Italian director of such classic films as L'avventura, Blow-up, and Eclipse. "Let me be clear about what I think," Arrowsmith told an audience assembled at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 1977. "Antonioni is one of the greatest living artists, and as a director of film, his only living peer is Kurosawa; and he is unmistakably the peer of the other great masters in all the arts. As an innovator and manipulator of images, he is the peer of Joyce in the novel; in creating a genuine cinematic poetry, he stands on a level with Vale(accent)ry and Eliot in poetry proper; and that his artistic vision, while perhaps no greater than that of Fitzgerald or Eliot or Montale or Pavese, is at least as great and compelling." What was there about Antonioni's films that ignited such a response in Arrowsmith, and that continues to move, inspire, entrance and occasionally enrage film lovers today? In Antonioni: Poet of Images, Arrowsmith's friend and colleague Ted Perry has brought together and edited eight remarkable essays, all but two never before published, in which the late critic confronts the Antonioni oeuvre through a film-by-film examination of his best known work, from 1956's Il grido, to L'avventura, La notte, Eclipse, Red Desert, Blow-Up, and Zabriskie Point, concluding with 1975's The Passenger, starring Jack Nicholson and Maria Schneider. Originally presented as lectures, these seminal essays brilliantly illuminate what these films mean to us, and why. A renowned literary critic and classicist, Arrowsmith traces with matchless clarity the intellectual roots of Antonioni's uncompromising vision. But Arrowsmith also illuminates the more technical and cinematic aspects of Antonioni's work, how the movement of the camera or the use of space enhanced the director's ability to find and create memorable images. In his analysis of a scene in La notte, for instance, Arrowsmith proposes how the composition of shots expresses the meaning. Noting how the actress portraying a nymphomaniac is framed next to expanses of wall, Arrowsmith writes, "What the nymphomaniac wants to shut out is any knowledge of the blank immensity...that we see exteriorized as she stands against the absolutely clinical white blankness of the wall, her own emptiness projected as the emptiness around her, threatening her." "When an artist like Antonioni is examined by a critic like Arrowsmith," Ted Perry writes in his memorable introduction,"We see again how art is connected to life, life to death, and both art and life to meaning." Enhanced by an appendix providing a brief synopsis of each of the eight films, and frequent translations of key bits of dialogue crucial to film-goers' understanding, Antonioni: Poet of Images captures the insight, sensitivity, and intelligence of one of our most distinguished critics, and celebrates the work of one of the world's most innovative film makers. It is essential reading for lovers of cinema and all admirers of Arrowsmith.

Impressionistic, insightful, highly personal film criticism .......2001-01-14
William Arrowsmith (deceased) was a classical scholar and award-winning translator whose depth of knowledge, keen perception, and sheer talent as a writer are fully evident in Antonioni: Poet of Images. Arrowsmith's rich knowledge of Italian and classical literature informs his humanist (and often striking) impressions of the following Antonioni classics: Il grido, L'avventura, La notte, Eclipse, Red Desert, Blow-up, Zabriskie Point, and The Passenger. The book is edited by Professor Ted Perry and includes an appendix with synopses of the eight films listed above, notes, and "further reading."
Here's a critic worth reading.......2000-09-13
Arrowsmith's fascinatingly wide-scoped analysis of Antonioni's classic films is one of the best books of criticism I've ever read. You will not find a single line of cliche film criticism in this entire book, no jargon, just insight and more insight into the how and why of Antonioni's greatness based firmly on cultural and philosophical imperatives. No self-respecting Antonioni fan should miss out on the tonic of Arrowsmith's pivotal achievement.

Book Description
Film Criticism. Screenplays. Internationally renowned director Michelangelo Antonioni (L'Aventura, Blow-Up, The Passenger), who has said that his thoughts "are almost always films" while his films are records of "thoughts in the making," here offers an eclectic collection of pieces ranging from short screenplays, to personal memoirs, to incisive meditations on the nature of cinema. The cumulative effect is a sort of montage of the workings of the author's mind, his thought-films and film-thoughts, projected simultaneously (in a clear and precise translation by Andrew Taylor) onto the white screen of the page. Antonioni, a seminal figure in modern cinema and one of the greatest Italian filmmakers, received the Academy Award for lifetime achievement in 1995.
Book Description
Wim Wenders's fascinating and often moving account of his experiences helping one of the masters of modern cinema make his final film.
In 1983 the world-renowned filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni suffered a physically debilitating stroke that left him severely aphasic. While mentally alert, he had, but for roughly a dozen words in Italian, lost the ability to speak and to write. He was able to draw--but only with his left hand. None of this, however, could extinguish his creative drive and he was determined to continue working. Eventually he managed to convince financiers that he was still capable of making a film as long as there was another director on the set to interpret his drawings and nods of the head. Thus in the spring of 1994, with the internationally acclaimed German filmmaker Wim Wenders signed on as co-director to calm concerned insurers, he began filming Beyond the Clouds.
My Time with Antonioni is Wenders's diary of filming with "the maestro." With insight and respect, he recounts the experiences--both good and bad--of striving to bring to fruition Antonioni's cinematic vision.
Customer Reviews:
On psychology of movie making.......2001-05-02
I enjoyed reading WW diary primarily for the insights to the personal struggles of the director working with somebody who is his master. Book is full of slight and not-so-slight overtones on the relationship between two men; sadness at the realization that "Beyond the Clouds" in all probability will be Antonioni's last movie; impossibility of filling in the personal artistic content for the other artist. I was amazed on the technique which Antonioni is unfortunately left with after his paralysis - finger gestures and a few disconnected utterances. I would recommend this book to a student of cinema; and also to the lover of biography genre.
Wonderful.......2001-04-04
A masterpeice of a movie, becomes a woderful account of the making of it. Diaries of the famous and creative, are the publics guilty pleasure of removed voyouerism. This book is just great.

Bird Companion.......2006-04-15
This is an excellent supplemental book to the standard biographies of Bird (Ross Russell's BIRD LIVES! is typical). Included are chapters dealing with Parker's career and influences; a couple of transcribed interviews; some reminiscences by Jay McShann, Gene Ramey, Dizzy Gillespie, and Howard McGhee; a few concert and nightclub reviews; an essay by Stanley Crouch; and quite a number of reviews and appraisals of Bird's recorded legacy. The most impressive inclusions for me were the long essay by Ira Gitler excerpted from his JAZZ MASTERS OF THE FORTIES, and the "conversation" Gitler had with trumpeter Howard McGhee for the Jazz Oral History Project at the Institute of Jazz Studies. McGhee is very up-front with his comments and attempts to correct some long-held beliefs (for example, according to McGhee Parker did not set his hotel room on fire following the infamous LOVER MAN date for Dial). Also impressive is the adaptation from Phil Schaap's liner notes for the COMPLETE CHARLIE PARKER ON VERCE CD set; Schaap is probably the foremost authority on Parker in the world, and decades of scholarship and thinking about Bird went into that CD booklet. Anyone interested in the music and legend of Charlie Parker will appreciate this book.
Review.......2000-03-31
This book is the most comprehensive review of Charlie Parker's life and his influence on sociey today. This is a must read for any jazz fan or performer.
Book Description
In this book Grandmaster John Emms explains the strategies and tactics of the dynamic and fashionable Scandinavian Defence. Through the use of model games for both sides, the author provides a thorough grounding in the key ideas, so that players of all standards can quickly and confidently begin to use the Scandinavian in their own games. This book provides a complete update of Emms's original and best-selling edition of The Scandinavian, published in 1997.
Customer Reviews:
A solid book.......2007-07-22
I would give the content of this book 3 stars, but since it's much better than Plaskett's effort on the same topic, I give it 4.
Too much emphasis on variations and move orders (sometimes the author will have you flipping pages and you can get lost in the maze of transpositions).
Also, I have the impression the book is written from white's point of view. This is especially visible in the short section on the Qd6 variation, where the author shows how black can quickly get into trouble without providing any improvements.
Be aware also that the book is centered around the Qa5 and Nf6 main lines, with only a few pages devoted to Qd6. So if you only play the Qd6 line, there's very little here for you.
Well selected games!.......2006-12-21
Great book! and having the games available on the publisher's website was a nice touch.
One (minor) quibble was with the font used by Everyman for game deviations. The 'a' can be easily mixed up with the 'e' by those of us with failing eyesight; a victory for style over functionality.
the scandinavian - 2nd edition.......2005-07-21
John Emms' second edition of the Scandinavian is an expanded version of the first edition, organized in the same way.
As is normal for the Everyman format, lines are presented as complete games, with a variation index at chapter's end.Personally I like this format.
Chapters have (in my opinion) a useful introduction, plus again in my opinion Emms is objective about results.
In this edition an expanded coverage of the Panov Attack is included, thus filling a gap from the first edition.
In gneral I would say 2...Qxd5 gets more attention than 2...Nf6,and in 2...Qxd5 only 3...Qa5 is paid much attention to as an answer to 3.Nc3.
My only reason for not awarding 5 stars is I wish for a better treatment of transpositions in the main line. For example,1.e4,d5 2.exd5,Qxd5 3. Nc3,Qa5 4.d4,Nf6 5.Nf3,c6 6.Bc4,Bf5 is "main line",according to Emms, and in the above 5...Bg4 is labeled inferior. {chapter 3). But also (game 16) in the above 6...Bg4 is labeled "seems to give Bk an inferior version of the mainline",altho perhaps justified now that White will not fianchetto his KB.Finally,in chapter 4 after 1.e4,d5 2.exd5,Qxd5 3.Nc3,Qa5 4.Nf3,Nf6 5.Bc4 the move 5...Bg4 (game 28) is described as the suspected "best answer".Of course here 6.d4 would transpose the best answer to the inferior version. As a result one is left in doubt regarding Bk's QB development. (or at least I am).Or in general the move order choices in the first half dozen moves of the 2...Qxd5 line.
Still, overall I find the book well-written and a very good reference for the Scandinavian.
A guide for intermediate to advanced chess players .......2005-03-14
Now in an updated second edition, The Scandinavian is a guide for intermediate to advanced chess players concerning the Scandinavian Defense, its various strategies and tactics, and tips for using it to the fullest advantage or reacting to it. Written by John Emms, one of Britain's most well-known Grandmasters, The Scandinavian is packed cover to cover with examples and sample games, many of which are taken directly from matches between expert players, to illustrate its points. Changes made to the new second edition include revisions of personal opinion and analytical amendments, which by the author's own admittance, are so common that he elected not to highly each and every one. A superb resource for the serious chess player striving to improve.
A well-written up-to-date book on the Scandinavian Defence.......2005-01-10
I think this is the chess book to get if you want the Scandinavian to be your main defence against 1 e4. And this is indeed my main defence, so much so that I feel I could almost write a book on "My Life as a Scandinavian."
For the record, I play and recommend the following lines for Black:
1 e4 d5 2 ed Nf6 3 c4 e6 (the Icelandic Gambit) 4 de (4 d4 ed 5 Nc3 Bb4) Be6 5 Nf3 (5 d4 Bb4+ 6 Bd2 Bd2+) Qe7 6 Qe2 Nc6 7 d4 Bg4
1 e4 d5 2 ed Nf6 3 Bb5+ Bd7 4 Bc4 Bg4 5 f3 Bf5 6 Nc3 Nbd7
1 e4 d5 2 ed Nf6 3 Nc3 Nd5 4 Bc4 Nb6 5 Bb3 Nc6 6 Nf3 e5
1 e4 d5 2 ed Nf6 3 d4 Nd5 4 c4 Nb6 5 Nf3 Bg4 6 Be2 (6 c5 N6d7) Nc6
1 e4 d5 2 Nc3 de 3 Ne4 Bf5
1 e4 d5 2 e5 c5
1 e4 d5 2 d4 (Blackmar Gambit) de 3 Nc3 Nf6
1 e4 d5 2 Nf3 (trying for a Budapest Reversed?) de 3 Ng5 Bf5 4 Bc4 e6 5 Nc3 Nf6
Still, if you want to rely on this opening for Black, you ought to read some other books as well. Here are a few I recommend:
Skandinavisch und Jugoslawisch (Schwartz, 1969)
The Chess Opening for You (Evans, 1975)
Center Counter (Grefe and Silman, 1983)
Winning With the Scandinavian (Harman and Taulbut, 1993)
You probably ought to look at the recent book, "The Scandinavian Defence" by Plaskett too.
In any case, I recommend the present book by Emms. It contains 72 analyzed games, 47 of which are from 1998 or later. It definitely presents a modern assessment of this defence.

It's not a CD-ROM!!.......2007-09-13
Great CDs with a rich content and very usefull. However, I bought the CDs because in the description it was written "AUDIOBOOK CD-ROM", so I thought it was the electronical version of the paperback, but when I got the CDs I was really surprised that, in fact, they ARE audio CDs and not CD-ROM as mentioned.
Now, I had to buy separately the book.
So, in all, interesting but only audio CDs, not CD-ROMs. Don't get wrong.
this book is great.......2006-10-27
great way to learn swedish, great resource even for a teenager/kid
Good course.......2006-07-31
Good quality both in lectures and exercises.
Also the choice of subjects in lectures is well-aimed and helps
you learn many facts and informations about Sweden.
Not for beginners.......2005-12-09
I tried to start learning Swedish straight off with this text, and was soon overwhelmed by the sheer mass of vocabulary (often not beginner-level at all, such as "manufacture", "plastic handle", "red-checkered") and the very quick pace with which it explains the grammar. I did however appreciate the variety of the readings, and the realism of the dialogs. You learn what real Swedish sounds and looks like, not textbook or toddler Swedish. Perhaps its for this reason that the vocabulary is so wide in subject and level.
Regardless, I would have much preferred a more gradual set of readings rather than in the second chapter diving into the adventures of a businessman who travels abroad to negotiate with Swedish firms.
The exercises work well, though suffer from being too fragmented. The majority of exercises I've done so far have been only parts of sentences or a few words at a time instead of using them in complete sentences to help cement other parts of what you've learned as well, such as the Teach Yourself Swedish book does.
I would only recommend this book to those people who have studied Swedish for a while and want to expand their vocabulary while reviewing the grammar at the same time. For beginners, I recommend looking at other books, or only using this book if you're working with a tutor who can help you with the parts this book glosses over.
Not so helpful.......2001-08-09
The material gets across, but it is rather haphazardly organized; you learn how to say "plastic handle" long before learning any object pronouns. There seems to be an effort to translate new vocabulary as it is introduced, but this is not entirely successful; I found myself repeatedly having to look up words in the reading sections that were not included in the vocabulary lists following the readings. Also, the book makes the unwritten assumption that the reader is British, which produces surprisingly many inconveniences for an American reader. All things considered, one can certainly learn beginning Swedish from this book, but not in a particularly efficient or utile manner.
Book Description
This volume presents papers from the 2nd Scandinavian Workshop on Algorithm Theory. The contributions describe original research on algorithms and data structures, in all areas, including combinatorics, computational geometry, parallel computing, and graph theory. The majority of the papers focus on the design and complexity analysis of: data structures, text algorithms, and sequential and parallel algorithms for graph problems and for geometric problems. Examples of tech- niques presented include: - efficient ways to find approximation algorithms for the maximum independent set problem and for graph coloring; - exact estimation of the expected search cost for skip lists; - construction of canonical representations of partial 2-trees and partial 3-trees in linear time; - efficient triangulation of planar point sets and convex polygons.

Excellent Hilarious Novel for Learning Management.......2007-10-03
"The Goal" is a hilarious novel but with a serious business message particularly with respect to production/operations management. The author expertly wove an intricate story about a plant manager (Alex Rogo) whose factory and marriage are failing into a compelling and convincing explanation about how to deal with constraints and bottlenecks effectively, not only in business but also in everyday life. This is a good captivating read particularly for those who find reading business and management books to be dry and having a soporific effect.
Alex Rogo's life is made very difficult by bottlenecks, constraints, excess inventories and pressure from management that demands efficiency in the factory operations. However, through mastering the theory of constraints (TOC), the appreciation of a business as a system, the effective use of industrial engineering techniques as well as common sense, Alex and his team overcome the problems.
This is an enlightening book that is easy to read and understand for people particularly those who a new to managing an organization. You will learn about the goal of an organization, waste (and how to avoid it), cost structures, team utilization, supply chain bottlenecks, identify improvements, work prioritization and enhance efficiencies.
You will get the most from this book if you also read the Toyota Production System which can fix many of the problems highlighted in this book. Among the highlights of the Toyota Production System are the Just-in-Time inventory system, production leveling, multi-skilling, the pull method of production planning which provides a more comprehensive approach to manufacturing operations. Another useful investment is to get a copy of the classic book "The Fifth Discipline" by Peter Senge (if you have not yet read it). Senge proposes the "systems thinking" method to help companies to become "learning organizations" that integrates all personnel levels and functions (such as production, human resources, finance etc) to increase the ability of the organisation to be more productive and effective.
In summary, this is an outstanding book packed with insightful wisdom that I recommend to employees at all levels in an organization as well as students studying business.
fast and cheap.......2007-09-12
I received this product in good time and condition. Brand New. Saved quite a bit of money over the campus book store price.
Solid read applicable to business and beyond.......2007-07-29
The Goal is a well-written book, broadly applicable to anyone in business and to an extent life in general. It is a no-nonsense novel, utilizing and exploring real-life situations and personalities. What I liked most about the book is the integration of "scientific" approach to business, how assumptions are constantly questioned, explored, and reformulated, and how the human element is, albeit slightly, interwoven.
While the most benefit clearly is in manufacturing context, I find the book to be useful and I work in professional services. I akin the Theory of Constraints ("bottleneck management") to Stephen Covey's example of "moving big rocks", hence the applicability to life in general. Said another way, I believe one must focus on the things that are most constraining (the boundaries), and this method of thought is explored in The Goal. The book also interweaves personal experiences into the "core" business theme, which allows for some examination of life outside of work and of course personalizes the story.
Overall, great book and a suggested read for sure.
The Goal.......2007-06-08
If you told me that a story about cost accounting in a factory would be interesting I would say you are nutts. However this story is extremely will written & entertaining thru the first 80%. The finish concerning philosophy could be left off.
I would listen to the book until I reached the end of a chapter because it was interesting even when I had arrived at my driving distination.
I do have an accounting background so that may affect my opinion.
Theory of Constraints explained and its wide applications revealed.......2007-06-03
The Goal is a fascinating book about the Theory of Constraints which was introduced to the world by Eliyahu Goldratt. I must admit the title didn't appeal much to me, but bought it anyway because it was recommended highly. After reading it, I realized that the title was perfect since it plays well into the questioning that needs to take place in order to identify the constraint or bottleneck in an organization. The book is written as a novel, which makes the book a lot easier to read and also a lot more entertaining
Alex Rogo is a plant manager and at the beginning of the novel is greeted at his plant by the VP who informs him that his production numbers need to improve or they will be shutting down the plant. Of course, during all this mess Rogo is also going through a rocky marriage and throughout the book the reader is taken through the struggle of both issues.
Alex seeks advice from an old Physicist from Israel named Jonah. Jonah takes Alex through the Socratic method of analysis which is the way Alex then communicates with his management team to solve the issues causing the low throughput in the factory. The conversations that take place between Jonah, Alex and the entire management team are extremely interesting and informative. I wonder how often this level of discussion actually takes place, but it sure makes for interesting reading.
A lot of the applications of the theory of constraints, although they take place in the factory, could be easily implemented in all industries.
Mr. Goldratt has written a business book that will remain relevant for many years to come. I highly recommend this incredible business book. Anyone who does business consulting and does not read and use the information on this book is doing his/her clients a great disservice.
