              4 out of 5 stars I'm looking forward to a second edition.......2003-12-30

              This book does a good job of keeping to ol' noodle from turning into mush. But....

              Just a few days ago I was somewhat frustrated by it. When checking my answers I was led to believe that I was wrong, but after checking and rechecking and writing a program treverse the curve (Dec 21) I found that the book was incorrect on this one(don't let that stop you from working it though). Maybe I am wrong.

              Another frustration was that yesterday's question (Dec 28) was a little off from the answer, it asks for area but supplies 1st of the 3 consecutive integers. The second issue has me working the problems in the fullest detail so that if another aspect of the problem is answered I'll still have the saticfaction of seeing that I had the correct answer.

              I'm not knocking the book. These issues kinda' keep me on my toes. The book is great otherwise. I look forward to the next problem(day) and sometimes discover that I have completely forgotten how to answer some questions. I would quickly buy a new version of this book.

              4 out of 5 stars Clearly Theoni Pappas' best book / Good book regardless.......2003-08-25

              Theoni Pappas seems to have a mixed reputation (at least, if we go by Amazon reviews). Some people like her art deco approach to popularizing math and like the fact that it is aimed toward kids, parents, and self-learner adults who only have a vague recollection of high school math. Others diss her books as being too simplistic, too easy, too derivative, etc.

              Whichever side of that argument you fall into, I think any reasonable person that is interested in math should agree (after perusing *Math-A-Day*) that this is clearly her best book and a good popular math book by any standard.

              As others have pointed out, this book is organized as mathematical vignettes for 366 days of the year (which includes leap years). Each of these math capsules includes a brainteaser-type question that requires at most high school level math knowledge, some math trivia, and a math-related quote. From what I can tell skimming through it, the problems seem to be a nice mix of relatively accessible questions that aren't too hard all the way up to fairly challenging problems requiring a lot of sophistication (although, like I said, not much knowledge).

              The problems and their solutions (included in the end of the book), as well as the math trivia, should be of interest to all ages and of particular interest to those with an interest in learning as much about math as possible. This is a great book and is definitely not for juvenile primates or for drunken neighbors as suggested elsewhere. Learning about interesting mathematical trivia -- like Mayan mathematics -- should be of great interest to any genuine math lover and other clever, intelligent people.

              In short, whether you like Pappas' other books or you'd like to lump them, THIS book, *Math-A-Day*, is definitely an interesting book and worthy of the attention of math lovers.

              3 out of 5 stars cute.......2003-04-26

              I picked this up when headed for N.Y. from L.A. About half of the puzzles would be stimulating to a juvenile orangoutang while of the dole roughly half required information not generally available in economy class whilst the rest stimulated my drunken seat mate to use his paper bag above Denver.

              Not a `bad' book nor an evil one, a mathematical `sugar on maple syrup'. Grand if one is `stuck' somewhere and finds the Mayan counting system `essential'.

              4 out of 5 stars Great Job.......2001-02-27

              I bought this book just three days ago and I am hooked. The book has a variety of puzzles and problems that will keep you turning the pages consistently. I have bought many math puzzles books, and have been disappointed, but this book is up there with The Moscow Puzzles. Great job, Mrs. Pappas.

              4 out of 5 stars great collection of puzzles and historical facts.......2001-01-03

              I'm generally very critical about current math and puzzle books. I don't want to brag, but at last count, I owned some 150 math/puzzle books. In other words, I think can say that I've pretty much seen them all...

              Well, this book is one of my favorites! Yes this book has some old chestnuts, but the majority of the problems are quite original and only difficult enough to be entertaining. It's also full of interesting historical facts, all related to math of course.

              Up until now, I've generally stayed away from Pappas books. I find them a bit too elementary, but this one, I'll keep.

              Thanks Theoni for a fine book.

              Book Description

              In August of 1986 a special conference on recreational mathematics was held at the University of Calgary to celebrate the founding of the Strens Collection. Leading practitioners of recreational mathematics from around the world gathered in Calgary to share with each other the joy and spirit of play that is to be found in recreational mathematics. It would be difficult to find a better collection of wonderful articles on recreational mathematics by a more distinguished group of authors. If you are interested in tessellations, Escher, tilings, Rubik’s cube, pentominoes, games, puzzles, the arbelos, Henry Dudeney, or change ringing, then this book is for you.

              4 out of 5 stars Mathematics based on the just because principle.......2000-03-28

              Like so many of the "hard" sciences, mathematics suffers from a perception complex. The public view of the practice and practitioners is that of a hopeless muddle of esoteric babble. But to paraphrase E. T. Bell, "mathematicians are as human as the rest, sometimes more so." One could make a solid argument that human essence can be boiled down to the creation and appreciation of art, employing a strategy in playing games with the only goal that of winning a non-essential prize, doing things for the mental exercise and seeing patterns where none is immediately obvious. All of these items are found in applied mathematics and in this case it is called recreational mathematics.
              No artwork requires more thought to understand than that of M. C. Escher, where so many objects start as one thing and are somehow metamorphed into others. Many of the current ideas of fractals can be found in his drawings. So many "simple" games that we are exposed to have strategies that are mathematical in nature. But some, like chess, seem to defy solid mathematical analysis and show us once again how powerful the human computer really is. As the numbers of such puzzles appearing in newspapers and magazines indicates, a large percentage of the public enjoys a good mental tickler.
              This collection is a distillation of those thoughts, featuring mathematical explanations of most. The works here show once again that the distinction between mathematics and the rest of the world is an artificial one put up by small minds. Mathematics is a joyous endeavor that provides more joy and frustration than any other ever imagined by intellects on par with that of humans. It is a joy to read about people doing mathematics for no other reason than recreation. It is also sad to realize that so many people who proudly wear a badge of mathematical illiteracy are so far gone that the do not realize it when they are employing mathematics in a recreational manner. For a short time, one of the best-selling books was one describing how to solve the puzzle known as "Rubik's Cube." As is explained here, the solution is based on beginning group theory.
              A welcome addition to the literature, this report of the Strens conference is refreshing. For it shows mathematicians and their ilk having fun doing mathematics. To be blunt, that is something that the public simply does not understand.

                Any fan of mathematical puzzles will go ape over this thoroughly researched, timeless classic. Even for jaded scientists in their forties (such as me) and beyond, there's always some new gem to be discovered at the turn of a page. The scope of the book is immense, ranging from all manner of "classical" recreations to the puzzles of antiquity (e.g., squaring the circle) to the history of pi to the structure and functionality of the kaleidoscope. It's all here!

                5 out of 5 stars A Classic Compendium..........2000-09-15

                This is a classic collection of mathematical recreations. Originally written by W.W. Rouse Ball around 1900, this edition has been updated by the great geometer H.S.M. Coxeter. It is a comprehensive first source for information about magic squares, Platonic and Archimedian solids, "Knight's Tours" and other chessboard recreations, and just about any other variety of math-related puzzle you could name.

                For a mathematician, Coxeter is an excellent writer, and the book is quite accessible, even to relative math novices. Fans of Martin Gardner's books, of his "Scientific American" Mathematical Games columns, will want to own this. And because it's published by Dover, the price is right, too.

                            Book Description

                            Millions of people around the world are involved in direct selling. There are 12 million in the United States alone! Almost 74 percent of direct sellers are women.

                            An estimated 46 million people in the world are involved in direct selling, according to the Direct Selling Association. In less than ten years this number is expected to grow to an unbelievable 200 million! With more people looking for careers that offer independence, flexibility, and tremendous income potential, this book offers a one-stop source of nuts-and-bolts advice, insights, and practical sales skills.

                            Build It Big: 101 Insider Secrets from Top Direct Selling Experts addresses the three most popular models of direct selling:

                            * network marketing (e.g., Amway)

                            * party planning (e.g., Pampered Chef)

                            * person-to-person(e.g., Guardian Life Insurance)

                            The training that many of these companies offer is limited and typically covers only product features and benefits, basic sales techniques, recruitment, and order processing.

                            Through extensive research, the Direct Selling Women's Alliance (DSWA) has identified four crucial ""life skills"" that often are neglected or omitted from a company's training and support program:

                            * Financial and tax guidance.

                            * Coaching and leadership skills development.

                            * Business management and technology training.

                            * Daily success practices and implementation.

                            Build It Big unveils the methods and approaches in developing these skills that, DSWA believes, are the true linchpins of growth and long-term sales stability. The disciplined approach and real-life insights from some of the most successful and talented people in the direct selling business will have broad appeal to rookies and veterans alike, especially for people who are opting for direct selling for part-time work, extra income, and the autonomy it offers.

                            I was interested to get this but really REALLY disappointed when one of the first tips was to call 100 people. No kidding. I found this to be a lot of re-hash of old ideas. Some decent tips but you really have to search for them. Bad layout, too. Not easy to read. Lots of stuff sort of thrown at you. If you are really NEW to sales, you might benefit but most of it you can get through better books or free in internet searches, your team leader, etc.

I only have 2 so far, but I will be better able to help them become successful. I had to pace myself or I would have read the whole thing in one sitting!

                            If you've ever attended a Tupperware party or spoken to a Mary Kay or Avon representative, then you are familiar with the concept of direct selling. More than 49 million people worldwide are hawking everything from toys to life insurance as independent contractors. Many of these professionals found a terrific resource in the book Build it Big, published by the Direct Selling Women's Alliance (DSWA). Now, the organization has compiled more insights, anecdotes, tips and techniques, specifically for female direct-sales professionals. Unlike most business writing, which is usually gender-neutral or all about "him," the operative pronoun here is "her." Although the sales strategy and self improvement advice isn't particularly new, it is solid. The book guides promising novices (most advice would apply to men as well as women) through the direct sales necessities, from finding inspiration and prospects, to asking for referrals or sales, dressing appropriately and building a team. Whether you need the advice or support of a coach, a sales guru or a fashion diva, we believe you will find it in this collection of 101 best practice essays from veterans of home-based sales businesses.
