5 out of 5 stars What a man! They don't make them like him anymore!.......2001-01-10

As you can tell, I am a big Gable fan. Alas, he died the year I was born. I bought this book about a year ago at a used bookstore in Orlando, Florida and love it. There is a wonderful foreward by Charles Champlain followed by an informative and interesting biography of Clark and then two reminiscences of people that knew him before he became a superstar. One memoir is by a woman named Franz Dorfler who loved him deeply. Following Dorfler's fond recollection, we read one by Paul Fix, who recalled the days Gable was a stage actor. It is intriging to see Gable through two people that knew him well long before he became the indisputed King of Hollywood. The book has beautiful, big, black and white photos on nearly every page. It also details every film he was in, from his bit part in small films to the classic films of the thirties and forties, example, "Mutiny on the Bounty", "Gone with the Wind", "It Happened One Night", "Adventure" etc. For anyone out there who is a Gable fan of any degree, this is a MUST to own. I refer to it often, sometimes just to stare at his beautiful face and masculine build. It's definetly a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars A must for all Gable fans!.......1998-02-02

I've seen a lot of Gable filmographies, but this one is definitely the best. Great photos, too. Get it if you can!

I already knew most of the facts, but it's the type of book that you just buy to swoon over the photos of Clark. He's the best actor ever! There's sections for all his movies and Broadway performances, complete with photos and reviews. He's just so gorgeous!

5 out of 5 stars Finally WW gets it right!.......2003-06-12

WW has for many years provided historical settings for its games. Namely, Dark Ages for vampire and other games, this setting takes vampire to its roots in the gothic genre. Of all the historical settings, the gothic era provides the most for the avid roleplaying enthusiast. This is not a setting for power gamers, rather it is a finely developed melieu for sophisticated storytelling and characterization. Of all the WW supplements (this book requires you to have the Vampire: the masquerade core rulebook), victorian age vampire will delight those players that can appreciate the gothic era and its influence on the vampire as metaphor.

3 out of 5 stars A supplement for those of proper bearing.......2002-10-21

V:tVA has been a long-awaited chapter in the World of Darkness story. It's a brilliant concept, but somewhat lacking in execution. Albeit, my opinion is biased, for I favor the older supplements rather than these newer ones. But it is a bias on the basis of product quality, of which the revised editions of thw World of Darkness games have begun to lack.

The book itself is rather straightforward in its design and execution of Vampire in a Victorian setting. It is a sparse read, even if laced with provocative enough detail to encourage your own research forthwith. Still, for anyone with an interest in the Victorian age as a setting for Vampire, this is an excellent primer, especially with those with little time or inclination to engage in personal research. It is comprehensive, thorough, and provides a snapshot of the Kindred in an age past.

When one stops considering its merits, a few flaws become obvious. The art, for one matter, is rather bland and even vague in places- witness one Guy Davis. His work summarily detracts from the piece, and the task of realizing the Dark Victorian age is thus thrust upon the remainder of the artistic staff. Otherwise, the art is excellent, if monotone (yet not entirely inappropriate, given the material and setting). The tone of the narrative is also somewhat pedantic in places (particularly, the in-character dialogue), demonstrating the 'gother-than-thou' attitude prevalent among the subculture.

Congratulations, White Wolf, on another just-above-mediocre product. Were you to invest a little more time into writing a guide to literary and artistic achievement, instead of pandering to Azrael Abyss and his ilk, this would truly be a sourcebook 'for the ages.' A true classic has been tainted by commercialism, a sad testament to the American method of publication.

4 out of 5 stars Gods and Blood Spells.......2004-08-06

The third volume in this series resumes the story of vampires Regina Blake and Victoria Ash as the scene shifts from Paris to Vienna. In that city is the secret master chantry of the Tremere, the blood wizards of the Masquerade. It is into Vienna that Anton Wellig has brought Regina's mother, Emma, to enlist the support of his peers in an ornate plot aimed at ending the unlife of Mithras, the demon prince of London. Welligs initial attempts on Mithras failed, but damaged the master vampire in such a way that the turmoil in his mind is reflected in the city's streets.

Lord Blake, Emma's husband before her own change, also comes to Vienna to try to release his wife. But he is not as cautious as he should have been in choosing his friends, and the attempted rescue triggers another round of disastrous consequences. Beckett manages to rescue Emma from immediate danger, but there are countless other bumps in the road as the various players are drawn back to England for the final phases of this long drama.

Phillipe Boulle again manages to avoid the trap many Masquerade authors fall into - that of getting so mired in the details and politics of Vampire life that their tales read more like museum exhibits than they do vampire fiction. While this volume bogs down a bit as Boulle fleshes it out with some collateral stories, it never drags to the point that the reader's attention wanders. And for the most part, his sub-stories flesh out his characters or expand on current events.

The primary focus of the story is the people who move through it. In particular Regina Blake, who comes to age as a vampire. She presents the aspect of a woman who is made with now warning or willingness, goes through the crises of the changing experience and, eventually makes her peace with her new 'life.' For all the glamour that vampires have, Boulle effectively cuts through the pretty picture and opens many of the interior moments of a vampire's life. Even while presenting an absorbing tale of the battle for power among some of the darkest segments of the world of night.

    5 out of 5 stars Victorian Ending.......2004-04-29

This book was a great ending to the trilogy that was Victorian Age Vampire. I could not put these books down, least of all this one, and I was so sad to see it all end.

5 out of 5 stars Superb wrap up of the series........2004-03-07

When I finish a good book I sigh, think about it, and look forward to the next one by that author. However, when I finish a trilogy, knowing that I have reached the end of a journey never to be taken for the first time again, I miss the book that will never be. So, about halfway through I start reading slower, even when I am entranced -- to make the journey last as long as possible.

The Wounded King by Philippe Boulle is the final in The Victorian Age of Vampires. I don't want the series to end. I know the people, for they are not just characters to me. I want to continue to peek in on their lives, or half-life of a vampire. I want the sensational trip to continue.

Philippe Boulle is not just the writer, but he is an editor and publisher at White Wolf Publishing. The books he publishes have never compromised his ethics. Each is a unique trip. He is, however, my favorite writer for White Wolf. I want more novels about these amazing people: some I love, some I understand while some I do not, and some I dislike. Each emotion tells me that my life has changed in knowing them.

I followed Lady Regina Blake, the heroine, beginning with The Morbid Initiation, through The Madness of Priests and into the conclusion and wrap up in The Wounded King. My reviews of his first two novels are also available here.

This series is a "coming of age" of a young Victoria Lady whose mother just happens to be the vessel for the return of ancient power. Regina loves, years for more, suffers the loss of her family and lovers, and disappears into London's night society. She journeys through a daylight into darkness world with Victoria Ash, her protector.

The power of Boulle's writing is this: believability is interwoven in the plot, characters, actions, and consistency of the series. I cannot recommend this book without the first two -- and I found this is a trip worth taking. Those who love vampire fiction will be satiated, history buffs will see the details of each scene and set the time and place by them. This is a good time for all.

    I give it five stars.

Anything done by white-wolf publishing is an amazing foray into the darkest parts of the human mind. They tell stories, not just write books. (there is a difference) and it is a unique spin on the traditional tales of Vampires. If you think you know Vampires...think again. Foget evreything you know.

4 out of 5 stars Cities of Vampires.......2004-07-19

Regina Blake and her vampire mistress Victoria head for France to seek clues to the fate of Regina's mother, Emma. The latter has been embraced as part of a murky Tremere plot to bring down the Prince of London. Even as their quest evolves, events in London threaten to explode. Lord Blake, Emma's husband, and Malcolm Seward, Regina's fiancée tear through the dark side of the city seeking traces of their loved ones, but despite causing considerable turmoil seem condemned to be always one step behind.

Other players have entered the fray as well. Beckett, a scholarly vampire with a compulsive interest in vampiric history, and Hesha Ruhadze, a mysterious Settite with his own agenda, temporarily join forces to try to discover answers, or perhaps to carry out an act or revenge, or to enlighten a goddess. On the human side Othman al-Masri seeks out the Society of Leopold, heir to the Inquisition and hunters of vampires.

Regina seems to make waves wherever she goes in vampire society. Although nothing more tha Victoria's protégée, turmoil seems to follow her. In A Morbid Initiation she witnessed the poisoning of Mithras, ruler of the London vampires. Now the pattern continues, for while Victoria copes with the intricacies of vampire politics, Regina is less patient, whether she is dealing with Francois Villon, the Prince of Paris, or anatole, the mad vampire priest whose abbey is hidden behind the gates of a prison.

Phillippe Boulle continues to weave an intricate plot without ever revealing the real goal. There is something underlying all this moves and counter-moves, but it always seems to lie just beyond out grasp. Just as Lord Blake never seems able to catch up with his daughter. The Madness of Priests add detail and texture to the story, but keeps a tight hold on its secrets. Detail tends to be the devil in white Wolf publications, since much of what is in the books will feed back into the game world on which they are based.

This hunger for information can slow down the flow of action excessively, but Boulle manages to avoid this fault, dancing on the edge of overwriting, but never quite stepping over. Instead, the finely drawn descriptions of Victorian London and post-Napoleonic Paris increase the reader's enjoyment. Welcome to the Masquerade...

5 out of 5 stars Blood sorcerers, wild chases, broken chains of love..........2003-08-19

Philippe Boulle did not let the fascination with Regina Blake, Victoria Ash, and the culture of Victoria times flounder.

Regina disappears with Victoria on her ever on-going quest to find out where her mother is, and if her mother still lives in the half-life of vampirism. Lord Blake, sober enough to realize that he has lost his daughter, and Malcolm, her fiancé search throughout London, but are always a behind the wily Victoria. Blake and Malcolm face death from creatures they do not understand. The caught a ghoul, the Ducheski's own group of demented servants who are allowed to kill, and to do whatever it takes to protect the Ducheski clan. Ghouls regenerate, and this leads to a climactic decision where Blake and Malcolm are concerned.

Did you know there are political levels in the vampire world, and woe unto the vampire that does not stay within the confines? Or, that it is a "mortal" sin for a vampire to kill another without permission? Oh, these factors come into play in magnificent ways.

In the meantime, Victoria takes Regina to France, where a strange world of the undead reveals that Emma Blake is a tool of the blood sorcerers. Here Regina meets the mad priest Anatole, and sees that both Victoria and Anatole are more interested in making Regina belong to them than in any way freeing her mother. Their escape from Anatole is difficult, and it is here that Regina faces Malcolm for the first time since her initiation.

Boulle's characters grow and evolve. I wondered what decision Regina would make, considered options, and was concerned for them as I read the book. What greater compliment can you give a writer than you care about his characters?

I can hardly wait for book three of this trilogy. This book is worth five stars to me.

        4 out of 5 stars Delirium Tremere.......2004-07-13

It's been quite a while since I've ventured back into White Wolf's Vampire: The Masquerade series. After completing the original clan series and the grail trilogy I was beginning to feel that the publisher had worked this vein (sorry about the pun) as much as it could be, and that the element of repetition was getting noticeable. At the result of several recommendations I decided to give this particular series a try. After all, vampires and Victorian is where is all started.

Phillippe Boulle is a surprisingly good author, which partially explains his position as managing editor at White Wolf Fiction. He manages to skirt the pitfalls of the Masquerade genre while presenting the story of Regina Blake, recently back from a long residence in Egypt with her father James, Lord Blake. In a hectic series of events, Regina's mother Emma dies under suspect circumstances and Regina discovers that a series of secrets that catapults her into the vampire society of Victorian London.

Fortunately, Victoria Ash, who at one time knew her mother, steps in to make Regina her prot?g? in a society that forgives nothing and is quick to punish mistakes. Now Regina sets out to discover what has happened to her mother, who has disappeared from her tomb. In the meantime, Lieutenant Malcolm Seward, her estranged lover, is becoming enmeshed in a secret military society that also seems to be entangled in the vampire's world.

So far, the story is focused on the machinations of the Tremere clan, which had fallen out of favor under the Prince of London, who had disappeared, leaving a regent in his place. His return offers a new opportunity for maneuvering and mayhem. At present the political element (which is the part I like least about Masquerade novels) is being kept at bay. Instead the primary focuses are Regina, Malcolm, and Victoria. For some reason the presence of a handful of humans (Victoria is a vampire) seems to enliven vampire stories, which otherwise tend to turn into caricatures of themselves. While not totally engaging, this turned out to be an interesting first volume, and I expect to complete the series.

5 out of 5 stars Life may only exist in the vampire world..........2003-08-19

Philippe Boulle has created a masterpiece of Victorian Vampirism. The book is filled with mystical mysteries, and has been thoroughly researched so that the anachronistic details take you to Victorian England. I could not put the book down, and could hardly wait for book two. Now I need book three, which has not yet been published.

Regina Blake is the beautiful daughter of the Viscount Lord James Blake, who has served in the military in Egypt for most of his career, and nearly all of her life. Lady Blake is ill, and must return to England to be cared for, yet when they leave Egypt, her brother refuses to join them, and father and son are estranged.

In their English manor, Lady Emma Blake dies -- was it murder, which it certainly appears to be, or something far darker. Her mother's family, the Ducheski clan, descends on the estate to bury Emma according to their traditions. In Regina's search for the burial place of her mother, she finds far more than any girl should see.

Regina believes she is in control of her nightly wanderings in London. She can no longer talk with her father, who has turned his anger at his wife's death to the liquor bottle.

Systematically Regina is seduced into a complex relationship with Victoria Ash, who becomes her sponsor and introduces her to the true nightlife in London. Victoria is also the only one who can save Regina's life during the Morbid Initiation.

I cannot begin to reveal the story in a short review -- it is fascinating, dark, delicious, frightening, enlightening, and horrific. It is one of the best books, not just one of the best horror novels, that I have read. The characters are complex, linked through so many levels of society and blood lines, filled with emotions and danger they each are real, not just words on a piece of paper.

This is book deserves five stars.

i love vampires so i was drawn to this novel. i definitely got sucked in but it wasn't what i call an "easy read" because of the victorian age language in it. it's not something i'd sit and read for hours at a time but definitely enjoyable. i'm looking forward to the next 2 novels.

The first volume in the VICTORIAN AGE VAMPIRE trilogy is a knock-
out! It invokes images of old Hammer Dracula films and brings
back old friends we've met before in more modern chronicles--
Victoria Ash, Hesha Ruhadze, Beckett. Written in the manner of
a Victorian Gothic, the novel is a must-read not only for
VAMPIRE roleplayers, but for anyone who loves Gothic novels, the
fog-shrouded streets of Whitechapel and a look at the Kindred
during the height of the Victorian era. DON'T MISS THIS ONE!!!

        Book Description

The World Café process has been used by tens of thousands of people around the world to tackle real-life issues. Based on seven key principles, it begins with small, intimate conversations at café -style tables; these gatherings then link and build on each other as people move between groups and cross-pollinate ideas. In this way, Café learning enables even very large groups to think together creatively in a single, connected conversation. This complete resource explains the Café concept and provides readers with the tools they need to get started. Each chapter opens with stories from business, education, government, and community organizations, each a dramatic example of how leaders are using this process in the real world. Such stories underline the Café 's immediate, practical implications for meeting and conference design, strategy formation, knowledge creation, and large-scale systems change. The book includes a foreword by best-selling author Margaret J. Wheatley, an afterword by author Peter Senge, and real-world stories of the Café process in action at Hewlett-Packard, the nation of Singapore, and the University of Texas.

5 out of 5 stars World Cafe: Makes Complex Conversations Easy.......2007-04-10

Full of clear and sensible information about how to manage complex conversations and consultations with large and diverse groups. A pleasantly 'unacademic' approach to achieving good results.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent description of World Cafe.......2007-01-10

World Cafe is a technique or process for having large group discussions which are emerging and not too controlled. It's based on the fact that if you create the right environment that useful discussion withh be created. What is this envronment like? It's like being in a nice cafe, small round tables, candle light and people who are pasionately about their subject. How do you create an environment in which that can happen, that's what The World Cafe is all about.

World cafe is based on 7 principles and the book is structured according to these seven principles. The seven principles are "set the context", "create hospitable space", "explore questions that matter", "encourage everone's contribution", "cross-pollinate and connect diverse perspectives", "listen together for patterns, insights and deeper questions", "harvest and share collective discoveries".
Each chapter explains one principle and then is followed by one or a couple real-life stories which relate to the principle.

The book is well written, though I found the format somewhat confusing and could have used a little move overview structure in the beginning. I've loved the "creation stories" and some of the real-life examples. However, some of the real-life examples were boring to read. The structure and some of the real-life stories make me rate this book 4 stars and not 5 starts.

I love world cafe and the ideas behind it. I've personally used the world cafe with good results. However, depending on your situation, similar techniques like Open Space Technology might be better. Knowing about world cafe, joining them and facilitating them have been fun and this book has helped me in having a better understanding of and about them.

5 out of 5 stars Cafe work is the most exciting work that I have done.......2006-10-21

For those of us whose practice is founded on conversation, learning and using World Cafe processes is so exciting. Participating in a cafe is just as powerful. Cafe work has the potential to bridge the gap between people who just do not understand each other. It has the potential to heal, create learning, creative change, and change the world. This book not only walks the reader through cafe work, it provides examples that bring the work to life. Cafe work is life changing and I highly recommend that even if you have never tried cafe work, go to the web site [...] and review how to use cafes and then yes, buy and read the book.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-03-07

This book amazed me with its thorough and readable approach to a process that is at once simple and profound. Read this and you will learn how the cafe process has worked worldwide to bring people together for meaningful conversation. People who host cafes in the style explained in the book are able to create an atmosphere in which everyone can feel heard, can deeply listen to others and then halp weave the ideas together. I plan to use it for my workplace as well with community groups.
I also send copies to several friends who are facilitators in the corporate world.
