Book Description
For more than three decades the Catholic Church through its Legion of Decency controlled the content of Hollywood films. Studios submitted their films to the Legion for a rating, which varied from general approval to condemnation. Documenting the inner workings of the Legion, The Catholic Crusade Against the Movies examines how the Church acquired such control and how the changes in the movie industry and American society at large in the post-World War II era eventually conspired against that institution's power and led to its demise.

Please ignore the Berkeley reviewer.......2003-11-07
Please ignore the anti-Catholic reviewer who thrashed all the facts to death. After all, he is from Berkeley, a breeding ground of socialism. Cardinal Spellman and Joe McCarthy never were homosexuals (this book never mentions it), nor was Breen quite the anti-Semite he is always made out to be. When will we ever see a positive book about Joe Breen, Martin Quigley, Fr. Daniel Lord? I am a devout Catholic just like they were. The reason I gave the book 3 stars because it is a good insight to those who want to read how the Legion of Decency censored Duel in the Sun, Forever Amber and A Streetcar Named Desire, and were able to get films like The Moon is Blue, The French Line and Baby Doll out of theaters. The other 2 was due to its slightly anti-Legion angle, but its not as extreme as some books (like LaSalle's Complicated Women), and Gregory Black failed to mention all the films that the Legion had condemned and then changed. Please ignore the man from Berkeley who trashed the Catholic Church to death.
informative, authoritative, and easy to read.......2000-03-23
THE book to start with if you are looking for something that will cover the important facts, and key personalities in the history of American film censorship. Black writes authoritatively, as he has accomplished extensive research, has had access to actual historical documents, and is a Professor on the subject. But don't let THAT scare you away...this is by far NOT a textbook. It is an easy read. I especially liked the plot summaries of key controversial films.
Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely........1999-12-01
A Catholic anti-semite, Joseph Breen, and a Catholic extorionist, Martin Quigley, combined forces with a racist St. Louis Jesuit, Rev. Daniel Lord,SJ, to control the entire United States Movie Industry from 1934 until 1954, via boycotts, ignorant prelate pronouncements, and studio cowardice. Gregory Black details the whole sordid story with archival evidence. Curiously, Black does not highlight the startling evidence that Lord had used the racial theories of the 1920s as a weapon against the Jewish producers of motion pictures. He also downplays the antitrust suits which abolished the vertical integration -- ownership of exhibitors by the studios-- and block booking --requiring the captive exhibitors to take all of the films that a studio produced -- that enabled the movie producers to become victims of a Catholic pressure group, the Legion of Decency. Fr. Lord created a code of conduct for the studios which would protect the "moral ideals of the race." The word "race" which was code for white supremacy in 1930, was used over and over in the Lord-Quigley Proposal for a Motion Picture Code. The code as adopted, reflected American Catholic marriage practices which prohibited miscegnation. The Legion of Decency labeled the mixing of races as part of the Communist conspiracy, in accord with the personal views of Cardinals McIntyre and Spellman; Spellman, like Sen. McCarthy, a closet homosexual. Quite simply the Catholic orgranization agreed to boycott any picture that did not have a Motion Picture Seal and any theatre that dared to show a picture that was "Condemned". The Production Administration agreed to not issue a seal if the Legion objected. Both entities condemned and prohibited foreign and independent productions which threatened the economic dominance of the six major Hollywood studios. Most grotesque was the banning by the Legion of a biography of Martin Luther because Luther's theology was morally unacceptable. Black does not emphasize the American Chruch's misleading pastoral parish level teaching during this period that civil divorce was forbidden. The correct teaching is that remarriage after a civil divorce was and is forbidden. Any picture which "condoned" divorce or miscegnation was malum prohibitum. One enjoys accurate non-polemic social history, and this volume is definitely a must for movie buffs, American Catholic History buffs, and for those political scientists interested in unchecked power. One also notes that during this period, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Soviet Russia, all employed massive censorship to protect the masses from degenerate entertainment. The Legion of Decency was not a unique phenomenon in forbidding any depiction of homosexuality and other "depravities." "[T]he history of filmmaking in Hollywood during the era of censorship []is not a matter of how a few filmmakers got away with something, but that thousands upon thousands of films were refashioned to fit into the [lay Catholic] worldview of the censors. . .What the [censors] did not want, and successfully squelched, was the overt visualization and discussion of controversial issues. . .For more than three decades the Hollywood film industry allowed religious clerics to determine what was moral and immoral, what was socially acceptable political comment and what was not." This was achieved through the "Production Code Administration [Breen]and its alter ego, the Catholic Legion of Decency [Quigley]. This reviewer horrified his fiance in 1955, when he sat when the "voluntary" pledge was offered in her parish church. "Was this man going to be the father of [her] children?" (The reviewer was responsible for 12 pregnancies and seven chilren and 23 years of Catholic sacramental marriage, despite being corrupted by viewing "The Moon is Blue.")
Book Description
Broadway Season 1999-2000 is a unique and detailed guide to the theatrical year presenting 46 different shows. The volume features a comprehensive discussion of every show that opened on Broadway during the 1999-2000 season as well as several non-Broadway productions of importance or general interest. Each entry is accompanied by credits and cast lists, scorecards summarizing overall critical reception for each show, and a recap of each show's financial performance. A new kind of theatre annual, this distinctive volume discusses what the shows are actually like (instead of merely relying on plot synopses or photographs). It is an interpretive record, featuring not only dates and names but also the stories behind the statistics. Opening night title pages illustrate each show discussion. Appendices include a roundup of the season's major awards, memorable performances of the year, obituaries, long run leaders, shows still running from prior seasons, scheduled shows that never reached Broadway, and a comprehensive index. Steven Suskin has provided a relevant and irreverent record of the year's memorable high points (and low points). Written from an insider's perspective, the book is knowledgeable, intriguing, provocative, and entertaining.

EXCELLENT guide for the curious.......2003-06-08
For anyone who wants info on some of Broadways most and least known shows currently playing, Mr. Suskin's book is an ideal source. Having only seen the Producers out of the all the titles reviewed, I was very grateful for the in-depth reviews given on each play. I plan on buying the other two volumes. Great for any Broadway fan.

Street Smarts.......2007-01-26
I never received the book. Apparently the seller used the slowest form of shipping there is. No one knows where the books is. He shipped on 12/27/06. I have since had the sellers refunded and took that business elsewhere and received it in 3 days time.
if you don't like this, you don't understand trading.......2006-12-05
you can always spot s loser by one of (or both) of two reactions:
1- They want to get into a business to make money but think $200 is too much!!
2- They expect what they read to agree with their bias
Anyone who wants to make money but thinks a book is expensive at $170 has the wrong personality for trading. If you are like that, you have no business trading because you are too greedy and a coward.
Secondely, when you are making a comment about someone, it is really important to REALLY be sure that what you are saying is acccurate. The implication that Linda does not make money trading is just ridiculous. The woman is a bloody Market Wizard, for God's sake! She is also a pretty crap promoter of her services.
The book is excellent. The question is: does it contain methods that can make you money? Of course it does. You guys are clearly sleep walking because you are concentrating on believing that every method in the book will make you money all the time under any circumstances. Quit believing that and pick the ones that work under different market conditions. If you can't, it is your fault, not the book's.
If you watch Linda trading, you will see her using those setups under the right conditions. The fact is, if you cannot make money trading the setups in the book, you are either new and have to learn the basics first, or you are not cut out for this business.
This book is over priced and an absolute waste of precious time! .......2006-09-22
If you are new to the trading game, try to avoid getting sucked into the fantasy world of imaginary trading setups.
Turtle Soup, Momentum Pinball, 3 Little Indians? Are you kidding me! Talk about sell the sizzle, not the steak.
Understand the markets first, I would recommend reading books published by the CFA Institute, then read about accomplished traders, you know the guys who actually make money trading as a profession (Dennis, Tudor Jones, Borsellino, etc), then develop your own approach to the markets.
If you're interested in Technical Analysis, you can join the MTA (Market Technicians Association),its well worth the time and money.
Save your money folks! There are plenty of quality classic trading books out there for 90% less, and without all the mindless drivel.
Buyer Beware!!!!!!
Expensive???.......2006-08-23
I bought this book on a recommendation from another trader. I paid a lot less than the $175 they are asking now, but I still thought it was very expensive. I read through half of the book and thought it was interesting. On one of those days I had the book open on my desk and realized that one of the patterns from the book was forming! I waited till the right moment and took the trade on 2 year treasuries. Exited the trade about a minute later with a $225 profit. That paid for the book on a single trade.
I realize I could have also lost $225 on that trade, then the cost of the book would have been around $350. I was now happy with the purchase of the book. I looked for more trades, but did not find any that week. Then the book got pushed aside and forgotten about. I found the book again last week because I heard someone mentioning it. I pulled it out and reread it.
I think the book has something to offer. Is it too expensive? That is hard to say. For me it became free after one trade. Was I just lucky? I don't think so because I can scroll through charts and see a lot of the set-ups in hindsight. So the trades are there, its just a matter of being there to pull the trigger as they happen.
I hope to get more out of the book from this second reading. One thing I have noticed is that many times I read a book and get something. Then upon rereading it I pick up many thoughts that I did not see or understand during the first reading. Maybe I wasn't ready at the time, but having many dozens of books under my belt and lots more life experience in between the first and second readings, I was able to digest more.
Who gave woman a free pass?.......2006-08-07
I am aficionado of good books on technical analysis and this is certainly not a good one! Many of the techniques described in this book were invented by me as well many years before this book was published. Subseqeuntly, I discarded them into my recyclcle bin as worthless. I am not even a full time investor, devoting a good share of my time to real estate. I am just surprised that people are gullible enough to accept this tripe. This expensive book, expensive seminars, expensive internet service. What is this huckster going to come up with next. Perhaps she has gotten away with this sham because she is a female in a predominanatly male business. I too am involved in the national technicans group and I am embarrassed to be associated with such ilk. I have much to contribute to this industry and look forward to doing so in the future. In the meantime, I can only hope these market charlatans mend their ways.

Some good wisdom for a trader reading this book........2007-08-12
I just went through this book and it has some good information a stock trader can use to improve his approach trading stocks.
I read so many trading books in my trading career and many you can through out the window. This one you can find a spot on your book shelf after you read through it and you won't need to throw it out of the window.
If you are having a hard time getting on the right track trading this is another book you can find a place on your bookshelf.
The Subtle Trap of Trading: Why So Many Smart People Don't Make Money Trading, And How To Get On The Right Track In Less Than Two Hours
by Brian McAboy
I just love this book!!.......2007-05-14
This book is one of my favorite trading books. It was right after I hit a pretty huge drawdown that I started reading this book, and it gave me a clear vision of high probability trading. I took back all my losses and became consistently profitable though I still do lose, but losing is part of trading anyway...
One thing, some of the strategies might be a little difficult to program for those who trade based on systems, but lots of useful ideas!! recommended!!
The only way to trade successfully.......2007-03-23
The title of this book speaks volumes about what you will find inside. What the author discusses through out this book is how to make every trade give you high probable odds to make money. Trade unemotionally, don't get greedy, and don't try to make the market pay you back for past losses. Do not become arrogant and stop using a proven system. Wait for a pullback to buy a hot stock instead of buying at an all time high. Do not over trade, wait and watch for a great set up. Give trades room to develop do not set to tight of stops. Give winning trades room to run before taking profits. This book is an all in one book for successfully trading covering all the bases, technical trades, money management, risk management, and the psychological aspects of trading. No trade is a sure thing, we deal in probabilities, increase your odds by practicing what this book teaches. I highly recommend. Also read ALL of Dr. Alexander Elder's books for more specific trading principles involving your mind, method, and money management.
Best Intraday Trading Book.......2007-03-23
I have been trading profitably for about three years. I have been at this for about five years. I trade anything from fx spot market to mini-futures. Once a month I go back over all of my trades, read Elder's, Come Into My Trading Room, and this book is the first book I grab to re-hash strategies. I estimate that only about ten actual books on trading these days will make you profitable in todays markets. This book is one of the top three. The other two are Murphy's technical trading book and Tading in the Zone for the psychological aspect of this game.
For the person who said that indicators are not profitable- How have I been making money, consistently, for several years now with indicators all over my charts? Granted, I do not use indicators like the typical "Default" hogs that get slaughtered when they use indicators without any testing etc.. I use indicators exactly like Link shows in this book. I guess it works for some traders and not for other traders?
A Must Read!.......2007-02-21
Best book on trading I've ever read. Confirmed everything I had to learn the hard way over several years. If you are new to trading, read this first. It will get you on the fast track!

Customer Reviews:
Over priced book.......2007-09-18
The author only back tested one idea with two variations, and for this reason it deserves two stars. In the book, Pivot Point Analysis, Fibonacci methods and Elliott Wave Theory are all nonsense and that is why I believe the author did not back test the aforementioned. I believe there is more reliable methods for trading such as: pattern recognition; intermarket analysis; and to a certain extent few indicators for timing only.
Armed and Ready to Conquer!.......2007-09-15
Bought it...read it...enjoyed it. I have read numerous books in the last 3 years on topics such as stocks, options, trading systems and most recently currency trading, which is my prime area of interest. Many were written by authors who talk the talk. John Person talks the talk AND walks the walk. Translated: he writes about systems, triggers, indicators and trading philosophies that HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL for him, and he has the experience to back it up. Will they be successful for the reader? That depends on many variables, not the least of which is how well one learns and implements the material. You know what they say, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. While the author could have used a good proof reader and larger more visible charts, the material is relevant, insightful and interesting. And heck, you even get a CD with a few lessons on it to make things a little clearer. There are many ways to trade the markets. This book provides insight as to how one SUCCESSFUL trader has done it. You can criticize many things in life but one thing has always been true: you can't knock success. Thanks John, for sharing with us the weapons you carry into battle with the forex market. I, for one, am better armed because of it.
Be aware.......2007-09-10
in this book you have lots of fillings. like that : because any idea will work great if you have a trending market. so I do not like the charts that shows a good looking results while it does not work in the real live trading. it has three poor systems with no commision or slippage (the profit target for the winners is 40 pips while the neglegted commision is 30), sure it will look good on the backtested results but unfortunatly it is not realistic, it is deciving."traditional chart Patterns" is usless pages and candlestick patterns, pivot point calculation are free on the internet, introduction to the Curruncy market......I could not find one single thing or idea to say somthing positive about this book So
Be aware of any guy with ear to ear smile on his book cover. and do not beleive the five stars unless the reason is clear. review it first then make up your mind
Good Work!.......2007-07-13
Excellent book. Reveals 3 BACKTESTED profitable forex trading systems, one of them averages 130 pips a month. Take note all the forex authors out there, show us the backtest results of your forex system or shut the hell up!!!
Written By A Real Trader.......2007-06-07
I've known John Person for several years now and I can tell you that he is a true trader who makes his living in the markets. There are two types of authors who write trading books - those that write about trading but don't actually trade everyday and those who trade every day and know what they are talking about and write books simply because they love talking about trading and enjoy helping other traders find success. John is definitely a true trader first - something you can tell immediately in the first few pages.
Forex Conquered offers specific trading strategies that you can use immediately which is what sets this book apart from all the others. If you've been disappointed by other books that talk in generalities, buy this one. John gives step-by-step instructions so that you can learn how to trade yourself instead of relying on others for "tips" or strategies you don't understand. I highly recommend it.

statistics or not.......2003-11-15
This book presents supposed statistical analysis of prices hitting, supporting or resisting intraday, depending on the previous day closing price and opening price based on pivot levels.
Some of the percentages present apparently good trading opportunites. However, there are six zones and hence 6 close x 6 open price combinations and the six levels which price the can hit during the day. You can get an idea as to how many permutations (trading setups) there are.
Although this is supposed to be a statistical analysis, with nice percentage numbers, the data would be more attractive if the P values and the n were included. Basically you will have to backtest each combination to verify the worth of the percentages for each promising setup.
Pecentages also vary quite a bit between different markets although some nice correlations do exist.
The book presents a lot lot more numbers than most books and therefore deserves appropriate credit. Some of the better stats can be tested in simple backtesting programs.
Would be more reasonably valued at a lower price than the listed retail.
Lot of mumbo.......2003-06-24
.... this book is filled with lots of white space, blank pages and mostly useless information. It's a very quick read, and has some limited trading appeal. The logic is very similar to market profile and daytraders' pivot numbers. Price seeks to reach a middle ground "pivot" - shaped like a bell curve, with the most activity in the middle and least on the extreme ends. This book throws a whole bunch of stats of percentages of what happened when in particular ranges. This is similar to market profile, with a vague theory of generalities, and requires you to work with wide stops within zones. Market profile and floor pivot number traders may find this book useful in linking together a method , but overall .. this book isn't worth buying.

DETECTING HIGH PROFIT DAY TRADES IN THE FUTURES MARKET by J.T. extensive statistics, but still unreliable.......1999-04-20
Extensive statistics on support/resistance and probability of break thoughs are given for a ten year period. The good news is that it is accurate for the commodity that I checked out (lean hogs, they're were called live hogs back then), Unfortunately, the number of occurances is not given in the book. The author suggests taking a position on something that has has happened less than ten times in the last decade. Some occurances at the extreme of his price zones have happenned only once. For instance a 1 and 6 signal will have a 100% chance of doing something. No mention is given that population size is ONE! His theories of zones are interesting, and maybe this book will spur some reader to buiild on this theorey. But not this one......

good.......2003-08-22
Presents a number of monthly, weekly and a few daily chart setups. These are essentially just breakouts based on bar patterns with the occasional indicator for confirmation. In addition, there are backtested results for each of them that are eye boggling if true (75-90% win, 3 to 1 minimum). I figured there's considerable curve fitting and many hours of computer scanning to find profitable patterns. This isn't necessarily bad, and given as these patterns are all fairly long term.. few people would actually care to stomach the stops necessary to trade it. Interesting, nonetheless .. and again if these backtests are even 75% accurate, you are looking at some amazing setups.
