Reality 1, Verhoeven & Ezsterhas' (sp?) vision 0.......2004-08-25
After hearing 'Showgirls' superfan David Schmader mentioning and goofing a little bit on this "miracle in (movie tie-in) publishing" in the 'Showgirls' VIP edition DVD commentary track (check out the Showgirls VIP Edition DVD collector box set and my August 22, 2004 review of it at www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00020X88O/ref=cm_aya_asin.title/103-1978159-0347843?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance), I knew I hadda check it out. This is mainly due to the fact that director Paul Verhoeven wrote the text to this glorified picture book, discussing his thoughts on the message and hifalutin vision he and screenwriter Joe Ezsterhas (sp?) were trying to convey through the movie.
If you've ever wondered, "just what the #ell was he thinking?!" after seeing this legend in the annals of bad cinema, Verhoeven's written thoughts here pretty much say it all. He talks about the evolution of Nomi's character from a sassy, bratty emotional roller coaster who'll do almost anything to reach her goals, to-- well, a sassy, somewhat-less-bratty emotional roller-coaster who gains a bit of wisdom from her experiences working the scummy underbelly of the Vegas night life... or something like that. But the funniest part has to be his notion of Nomi's misadventures being something of a "Christian morality tale". Personally, all I see is a horribly-acted and over-the-top yet oddly compelling cheese-fest with a lotta BOOBIES BOOBIES BOOBIES BOOB-
*SMACK* (OW!)
*Ahem* ...in it. Then again, I don't usually watch movies, good or bad, for underlying messages or moral lessons-- I just wanna be entertained. Which 'Showgirls' does, only not in the way the director envisioned...
Also brought up in the intro are Verhoeven's pontifications on the difference between the European and Hollywood styles of filming movies, and his thoughts on the over-the-top sex and violence depicted in his flicks are an exaggerated reflection of society rather than the cause of real-world violence and sexual promiscuity. He even gets a little political when he talks bout how censorship is "a sign of society's weakness", and how the First Amendment is a "statement of belief in the strength in the American citizen" (words I concur with, BTW). He also discusses the hang-ups the American public seems to have with sex and the expression of sexuality, which was something he was apparently attempting to take on with this project. Only thing is, like many others I found 'Showgirls' one of the LEAST sexy flicks ever made, in spite of all the bump-and-grinding, and scads of T&A.
After the intro, the gallery begins, featuring the photographic expressions of four noted professional shutterbugs, with a couple paragraphs of commentary by Verhoeven for each gallery. While most of the pics were well done, I did find it creepy that Verhoeven pointed out that Elizabeth Berkley was showin' some "camel toe" (no, I'm NOT gonna explain the term; look it up!) in one of the photos. I was also kinda weirded out by one black-and-white behind-the-scenes pic featuring one of the topless Cheetah club dancers standing next to some nerdy-looking bespectacled chubby dude wearing a really bad fedora. I think the main reason I was weirded out by this pic was because I used to look just like that nerdy chubby dude about five years and fifty pounds ago. Well, except for the fact that I'm not a hat person. And the glasses I wore weren't nearly as big or as thick as his are. Anyhoo, I found it a real shame that Robert Mapplethorpe was no longer around at the time this came out to do some photos. I'd have been really curious (no, NOT bi-curious) to see what he'd have pulled out of-- er, never mind...
On a final note: I think it'd be kinda cool if they re-released this next year as a special tenth anniversary "celebration" of one of Hollywood's most horrific cinematic misfires. It would include a "Ten Years Later" afterword by Verhoeven, featuring his thoughts on what went wrong, and his feelings about 'Showgirls' being celebrated and/or reviled for its badness by midnight moviegoers the world over, rather than celebrated and/or reviled for what he had envisioned it to be. He could even go into how the flick almost single-handedly destroyed the careers of many of the cast & crew that were a part of it. I think that would make for some really compelling reading...

This is a must-have coffee-table book (it's also available in paperback) for all fans of Paul Verhoeven's brilliant, moving epic; it comes close to capturing the lush beauty of the movie itself. Anyone with taste, style, and/or half a brain will cherish both the gorgeous book and the inspiring, elegant movie. Thank you to the publishers of the book as well as the filmmakers.

What can I say about Showgirls that hasn't been said? I am sure I echo the sentiments of anyone who's seen this film when I say it's the best movie ever made. This book is also amazing. It features an in depth look at the talent that made this movie happen. Verhoven helps us to understand the seedy underworld of Las Vegas and why this movie is truly the story of a girl in search of herself. Where, oh where, is the sequel to this stunning masterpeice?

Excellent overview of a director's career.......2002-04-02
Whether you're a Verhoeven fan, or just want to read an interesting account of a director's relationship with the film industry, this book will satisfy you. The author interviewed past Verhoven associates from the stars of his Dutch films to Michael Douglas, as well as longtime friends like cinematographer Jost Vacano (who has worked with Paul for 25 years). He also spoke at length with Verhoeven himself, getting some great quotes--not to mention insight--in the process. The translator has done an excellent job of making this book engaging and readable, unlike some biographies where the recitation of facts can get boring.
The book covers Verhoeven's childhood, early student days, his time in the military making documentaries, and his entire film career in detail from his first major Dutch production through the making of Showgirls. For the length of the book (only 300 pages) there is A LOT covered. If you are hoping to learn more about this rather infamous director you will not be disappointed.
There is a new chapter for each of his major Dutch and American films.
Besides the biographical text, there are some black and white photos before and after each major section and a complete filmography (through Starship Troopers). The book also has an index that is actually useful in finding the info you need.
I recommend this highly for anyone interested in Verhoeven--you might even find yourself surprised at how personable, intelligent, and funny he is.
Great book on a misunderstood man........2000-12-19
This is a fantastic biography of the director of The Fourth Man, Robocop, Basic Instinct, Showgirls and Starship Troopers. The first half of the book extensively details Verhoeven's childhood, education and early film career in the Netherlands, then switches to chapter-long "making of" stories on each of his American films up through Showgirls (Starship Troopers was still in production at the time this book was published).
Verhoeven is a VERY smart man and has led an intriguing life. If all you know of him is that he's "the pervert who made Showgirls," you'd do well to read this book. Good job, Rob Van Scheers!

This book contains all you need to run one of the most successful simulation games ever devised. The book includes photo-copiable signs for use in the game and all you need provide are a few decks of cards. Unlike most activities of this order, the game is a relatively simple one in which different groups of students play cards with each other use different rules. At first, students playing the game are baffled, then annoyed, then even hostile toward one another.
The game is an excellent way to promote discussion of how our pre-conceptions lead to cultural misunderstandings.

This is basically a card game. There are several variations and learners play the game silently in groups with each group having slightly different rules. As learners move to differen tables they have a diffucult time adjusting to the new rules since no verbal communication is permitted.
Learners are supposed to realize that their frustration at not knowing the rules is similar to not knowing the rules of different cultures. I found this entirely unsuitable for my language students because they already know that different cultures can lead to conflict and because I'm not interested in running a silent class.

I'm a college professor who also does diversity training. I use BARNGA in my corporate trainings as well as in my college classroom. Everyone loves it! The simulation is an excellent way of driving home the idea that every environment (an institution, a business, a classroom) has unwritten rules that we assume have been communicated to the uninitiated. When the new person experiences problems, we all too often attribute the problem to a lack of skills rather than to a lack of knowledge about the "rules." This game is a great deal of fun and allows the facilitator to engage the participants in some serious discussion afterward about diversity. Excellent! Get it today! You won't be sorry.
Frighteningly Enlightening.......2000-02-16
I was first introduced to BARNGA by playing the game at a diversity conference held in the Bay Area, CA. I was surprised at how ruthless and unforgiving I was to the people who entered my little community. I made them play my way and never took the time to understand their point of view or the rules that they knew. I am a student, 18 years old and i wish this concept had been introduced to me earlier. I didn't think that I had any prejudices but I do and BARNGA made me realize them.

Not bad, but they didn't do their homework.......2003-03-04
As a professional technical communicator, I found this book to be about middle of the road. The explanations are well done, but some of the cases are poorly researched. For example, in Chapter Five, an example letter has a product manager writing to a software vendor, asking that the program documentation be supplied. The software vendor responds that the programmers had somehow failed to write the documentation. This is nonsense; programmers don't write documentation, technical writers do. That aside, however, the good example/poor example format is very helpful to beginners. The section on oral presentations was very good, especially in the emphasis on audience research. The author again, however, undercuts herself by specifying "Windows-based presentation software", as if PowerPoint were the only presentation software on the planet, or as if it didn't run on the Macintosh platform at all.
All in all, this is a good first start for a beginner, but don't take everything here as gospel. The writer appears to be somewhat familiar with business practices, but betrays a bit of academic naivete from time to time.
