4 out of 5 stars Dense, Highly Academic Collection of Film Noir Theory with a Few Gems........2006-06-26

"Shades of Noir" is a collection of 10 highly academic essays on the nature of film noir, its origins, and its relevance to the culture at large, first published in 1993. The contributors are mostly academics from universities in the U.S. and Europe. In her introduction, editor Joan Copjec explains that the essays contribute different perspectives, not agreement, on what constitutes film noir. "What unites all the essays...is a strong sense of importance of the genre and of the necessity of retheorizing it." First, due to the "re-emergence of film noir in recent years". Secondly, on account of "the uneasy sense that we never adequately defined it in the first place".

Anyone who has taken a college film course will recognize the heavily Laconian and Marxist themes that run through this collection of essays as typical of film theory. You can either stomach it or you can't. The socio-economic and structuralist theorizing places these essays more in the realm of "cultural studies" than film history. The essays are extremely dense, as the intended audience is fellow academics, not the casual film noir fan. Nevertheless, they contain some interesting insights and new perspectives that are not entirely fantastical if the reader is willing to wade through it. I have to say, though, that this volume unconsciously elucidates the problem of defining film noir. Film noir has never been difficult to define. It has simply always been advantageous for academics not to define it -or to define it in whatever way suits their projects of the moment. So I guess they have left the job to us amateurs, who will make quick work of it. ;-)

The essays are as follows:

(1) "Film Noir on the Edge of Doom" by Marc Vernet. Vernet speculates about the motives of French theorists who "invented" film noir, as he denies that the film noir movement or style ever existed. This is the essay that Alain Silver fired a torrent of criticism at Vernet for in the introduction to his book "Film Noir Reader". Vernet displays an remarkable ignorance of cinematography, hard-boiled crime fiction, American film criticism, and cinema before 1940. (2) "The Synaptic Chandler" by Fredric Jameson. Analysis of the "peculiar nature of Chandler's plot construction", i.e. illogic, the "radio aesthetic" of film noir, and a Heideggerian perspective on the noir world.

(3) "Strange Pursuit: Cornell Woolrich and the Abandoned City of the Forties" by David Reid and Jane L. Walker. Primarily discusses how Woolrich's depression-era sensibility was particularly suitable to film noir and why it found an audience in the post-War 1940s. Very worthwhile for debunking the persistent claims that audiences were drawn to film noir due to "post-war depression" or disillusionment and that the femme fatale was the result of threats to masculine culture posed by women in the workplace. Compares hard-boiled fiction to the crime and adventure novels of the 1830s-1840s.

(4) "The Mystery of The Blue Gardenia" by Janet Bergstrom. Presents the production history of Fritz Lang's film, analysis, and comparison to Vera Caspary's story. I never thought "The Blue Gardenia" had much substance or that it was film noir. I still don't, but the particulars of its adaptation to film are interesting. (5) "Film Noir and Women" by Elizabeth Cowie. Attempt to "change the characterization of film noir as always a masculine film form". The roles of "duplicitous women", female protagonists, and victims. Analysis of several films, in particular Fritz Lang's "Secret Beyond the Door".

(6) "The Phenomenal Nonphenomenal: Private Space in Film Noir" by Joan Copjec. Starts with observation that the origin of detective fiction coincides with mid-19th century "passion for counting". The role of reason in film noir, particularly as exemplified in voice-over narration. Focus on "Double Indemnity". (7) "The Thing That Thinks: The Kantian Background of the Noir Subject" by Slavoj Zizek. Compares classic film noir to films of the 1980s that combine noir with other genres. Focus on "radical undermining of self-identity" in 1987's "Angel Heart" and 1982's "Blade Runner".

(8) "Home Fires Burning" by Fred Pfeil. The "domestication of film noir" in the neo-noir of the 1980s, focusing on the small-town domestic space of the art house "Blue Velvet" and the cyborg-as-father in the blockbuster "Terminator 2". Attributes this emphasis on nuclear family to "Reaganism". (9) "Noir by Noirs: Toward a New Realism in Black Cinema" by Manthia Diawara. Race and class in black film noir, focusing on "A Rage in Harlem". (10) "Democracy's Turn: On Homeless Noir" by Dan MacCannell. Diatribe on film noir's alleged "confrontation between capitalism and democracy". The disappearances of the "actual spaces" of film noir as seedy neighborhoods were gentrified.

2 out of 5 stars Without going out of my door I can know the ways of heaven.......2006-05-19

I came to this book with an open mind on the prompting of an offhand remark from George Harrison about the author knowing more about him (Harrison) than he knew himself.

I was quickly disabused of any notion I may have harboured about theis being a more authoritative book than most when I discovered that the early pages were very reminiscent of the Hunter Davies biography. Things looked a little brighter upon consideration of the years that followed after the last concert that the Beatles, as such, played in San Francisco, rather than the rooftop performance in Saville Row in London of which this author says very little.

Doubts began to creep in as the story (I wanted to say action but given the nature of what followed that was not a good choice of words) developed in the depths of Oxfordshire at George's little place nestling to the rear of Henley Town Hall.

I cannot vouch for the authenticity of much of the description of the secret world of George Harrison but therein lies the main problem with this biography. It is almost the construction of a straw man with the intention of pulling him down shortly afterwards. It reads almost as if the author claims friendship and loyalty to the central figure in the book while at the same time doing him down for apparent breaches of his own ethical code. He makes much of Harrison's Hindu beliefs yet appears so judgemental about the use of drugs or repeated tales of secret relationships which may or may not have any basis in fact.

A great deal of prose in the later chapters is devoted to the relationship of George Harrison and the devotees of the Radha Krishna Temple but one wonders why the focus shifts really away from Harrison to this particular group.

The sources which are acknowledged in the end are quite extensive which aroused suspicion in my own mind over the degree of closeness to his subject that the author really had. After examining them it does seem that the author did not have as much access as one might think.

At the end of it all it was like one feels like one has had a Chines meal - the feeling of being full has already gone and one is feeling hungry again.

I must admit it was an easy read where the prose flows well. It has all the ingredients of a soap opera, constructed characters who we learn more about as we proceed through the book, a good sprinkling of titllation and salacious moments to keep our interest and dramatic events at frequent intervals. I was more disturbed by the inadequate treatment of Harrison's throat problems which are mentioned but which one would have expected a more serious in-depth and sympathetic treatment,

All in all if it is titillation you want and you have a long bus ride to undertake, you could do a lot worse than read this. If, on the other hand you want to learn more about the quiet one, then you should look elsewhere.

Geoffrey Guilliano.A man who seems to write a Beatles book every month.
This one saw Harrison threatening to SUE.
Save your money and buy instead the GEORGE HARRISON ENCYCLOPEDIA by Bill Harry.
And check out what they REALLY say about this Beatles author on many sites.
Guilliano once wrote a book about Pete Townshend and admitted stealing tapes from him until the Who guitarist caught him and threw him out of his house.Yet why tell the World?
He fled the States because of the amount of bad cheques he wrote!
The man who once wrote "I can't wait till the rest of them die then I can write more books without the risk of being sued" has this on his website and its a terrible thing to say.
I first picked up one of his books in a charity shop and was impressed by the amount of pictures and memorabilia. After that I got a DVD called CELEBRATION,same as the book and for a fiver I got the 4 Talking Books.
These sound to be the products of somebody else and not a man named as "most despised Beatles author".I would have to admit the book was excellent and hardly any errors
Yet errors is something which occurs frequently according to other reviews I read.
Modest enough to stick his own picture on everything at least 4 times I thought he had a rather boring contemptuous voice.Apparantly the author buys a lot of stuff off EBay rather than pay some of the money he owes:this is what's shown in CELEBRATION.
I star is because I couldn't give the book a lower one

Have you jumped through the hoop of college? If so, remember writing papers? Fifteen pages? Fifty? on idiot topics? Papers that no one would read anyway? Not even the three-dollar-an-hour graduate students who did all the work while the prof plotted against other profs or sabbaticalized or wrote crazy stuff or slept? Remember that trauma? "Eking it out"?
Well, try writing a WHOLE BOOK about something the average college student couldn't write a fifteen page paper on, even one practiced in Eking It Out. Like George Harrison. Because there really isn't Anything To Write. And try this aspect of the assignment on for size: PEOPLE WILL READ IT. Not just count the pages and give it a Harvard "A". THEY WILL CRITICISE IT. Because it actually matters to them.
So summa cum laude, as the mortarboard set would say, for Giuliano's work. Yes, it's true that there isn't much in it. But what are you going to do, when the subject admits of little cogent commentary? Eke it out. Like this pro writer.
Check the other books on this topic. Note that many, or most, or all of them, get reviews saying there wasn't much, or anything, in this or that book on Geo. Harrison. Because even if you can listen to TWO versions of "Isn't it a pity" with pleasure, there just isn't much to say about its composer and performer. For better or worse.

1 out of 5 stars ZERO STARS.......2004-08-04

This book is a work of fiction, a sad display of the authors fantasies and exaggerations. If Geoffrey wants to write fiction, why does he have to plaster a real person's name on it. In another country, he'd have been ordered to make retribution for his slander, and this sorry excuse for a book would have been pulled off the shelves. It's very sad that he feels a need to make his living this way. I encourage him to go write about Bigfoot. That is the only subject his skills are suitable for. George lived with quiet dignity in an insane world. No one deserves to have lies and exaggerations of this kind printed about them, least of all George Harrison.

This book is complete garbage. There is nothing in it that is factual. If you want to read tabloid material please go buy "National Enquirer" or something.. Don't give your hard earned money or attention to this guy. He never knew The Harrison's and the book is fabricated stories by zealous bad author. Please go buy George's book "I Me Mine" or The Beatles 'Anthology" book is want to learn the truth about the man.

A guide to observation of the inner self through the ancient Indian game of Leela

    • Comes complete with foldout game board and commentary for the 72 spaces

    • Mirrors the path of obstacles and insights one encounters in self-development

    • Repeated play offers lessons in self-understanding

Chutes and Ladders, the popular children’s game, is derived from the ancient Hindu game Leela, or Snakes and Arrows, which charts the ups and downs of the soul’s path toward reunion with the Infinite. Snakes and Arrows was designed by the seers and saints of India as a tool for understanding the relationship of the individual self to the Absolute Self. For thousands of years the 72 spaces on this game board have enabled players to chart the paths that represent the course of their lives. Each space represents a virtue or a vice, an aspect of consciousness, or a plane of reality and is accompanied by a commentary explaining its meaning. The player’s progress on the board is dictated by the fall of a die corresponding to the forces of karma. Repeated encounters with the snakes and arrows on the board reveal the full meaning of the commentaries and can give shape to habitual patterns of the player, resulting in greater self-understanding and even a gradual detachment from the ego’s delusions.

The Yoga of Snakes and Arrows assists the seeker through the stages and trials of self-development, mirroring both the obstacles of karma and the rewards of self-obtained insight. There is really only one game in life and that is Leela, the game of self-knowledge and the universal play of cosmic energies.

5 out of 5 stars The coolest board game.......2007-07-09

I absolutely love this game. It is so awesome to be able to play a game that teaches me something so profound at the same time. I love the relationships that it gives insight into, the spontaneous meditation, and I am sure there are endless insights that will come as I play over longer periods of time. I heartily recommend it for parents to play with their children. This way kids can intuitively grasp what could otherwise be a boring lecture, years of study, or lifetimes of experiences. And it's fun!
By the way, it comes with a beautiful board, except it's made of thick paper and folded up in a plastic pocket on the back cover of the book. I would recommend affixing it to a piece of decorative wood so that it can be properly displayed and maintained. However, being able to fold it up into the book makes for easy travel to a friend's house for some good old fashioned spiritual fun :)

    Book Description

Leela is nothing less than the game of life, providing insight into our own consciousness and a key to divine knowledge. Four things are necessary for one or more to play: the book and game board, a die, and a significant object that belongs to the player, such as a ring, to serve as the player's symbol during the game. Each of the seventy-two squares on the board represents a virtue or vice, an aspect of consciousness or a plane of reality; the players' progress is dictated by the fall of a die corresponding to the forces of karma.

Designed by Hindu sages over two thousand years ago, this is the precursor to the popular game "chutes and ladders."

Simultaneously a game and a serious method of enlightenment, Leela parallels the spiritual journey toward liberation, advancing the player along that path by means of the self-exploration that the game demands.

Repeated playing of Leela will reveal past karmas, current concerns, and the cosmic patterns governing your life.

    5 out of 5 stars consciousness-raising game.......1999-07-01

I am buying this game after having played it at a friend's house. This game can spark much discussion, self-reflection, and interpersonal sharing at a deeper than usual level - and for this reason alone it is worth 'playing'. Also, I loved the detailed playbook - It is like a concise handbook of Indian spiritual metaphysics! A very worthwhile and handy item to have on your bookshelf.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing. Metaphysical Chutes and Ladders.......1999-04-16

Every play a children's game called Chutes and Ladders? This is it's original metaphysical predecessor, played by saints and children in India. Each row of squares is a different chakra, and each square concerns a challenge or opportunity of that chakra. Instead of ladders you have arrows that raise your consciousness, instead of chutes you have snakes that lead you back downward. Your path through the game is your metaphysical path through life.

As someone who is not an expert in Indian philosophy, I found the book a bit challenging, especially when all I wanted to do was play the game, not get caught up in the detail of it. I am sure someone will or has created a more playable booklet with only a few lines for each square.

The board design is lovely, and the structure behind the game unique. A must for any spiritually oriented person's collection. The game also replays well, and even after having owned my copy since not long after it came out, it is still a game I come back to, think about and play.

Few of us are natural-born leaders, according to John C. Maxwell, author of Developing the Leader Within You. Fortunately though, "the traits that are the raw material of leadership can be acquired," he promises. "Link them up with desire and nothing can keep you from becoming a leader. This book will supply the leadership principles. You must supply the desire." True to his words, Maxwell offers a detailed and inspiring primer on becoming a leader. Even the Table of Contents reads like a motivational poster.

Maxwell (The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader), who is the founder of INJOY, a Christian-based leadership program, debunks the myth that strong leaders must have big egos and spend all their time harnessing personal power. Instead, he elevates leadership to a spiritual act of service: "The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership." Maxwell relies on real-life anecdotes, short paragraphs, charts, and numerous lists to make his wisdom accessible. As a result, his writing often seems simplistic, with a self-help tone. Nonetheless, in teaching readers how to bring out the best in themselves as well as others, Maxwell offers a worthwhile life lesson that extends far beyond the workplace. --Gail Hudson

      Book Description

Developing the Leader Within You also allows readers to examine how to be effective in the highest calling of leadership by understanding the five characteristics that set "leader managers" apart from "run-of-the-mill managers."

In this John Maxwell classic, he shows readers how to develop the vision, value, influence, and motivation required of successful leaders.

      5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Book.......2007-06-30

I bought this book before starting my first job that would involve managing other people. I flipped through a few pages of it at the book store and was really impressed with how it was laid out. The book is organized into ten different attributes of leadership. Each chapter covers a thorough description and examples of the attribute. It also offers great ways to be effective in each area. I loved the anecdotal stories and poems that were included too. I finished this book in about two days and felt really inspired to go out and put it into action.

4 out of 5 stars Many people can benefit from this book.......2007-04-16

I read John Maxwell's Developing the Leader Within You as part of an assignment for a small group communication class. The book I chose to read for this assignment had to be of some interest to my career, and I chose this particular read because I figured that any person - no matter what profession - can benefit from leadership training. However, what I appreciated most about the book was that its principles can be applied to almost any situation in which a person wants to improve his or her overall effectiveness. The lessons taught in the text are good advice not just for becoming a better leader, but for everyday life as well. Even if you are at a point in your career where you are primarily a follower, you can still benefit from Maxwell's teachings and observations.

An example of a topic Maxwell covers that applies to most of us is prioritizing responsibilities and tasks. We all have duties and obligations that will continue to pile up unless we know which projects to take on and how to approach them. According to Maxwell, 20% of our priorities will give us 80% of our production. Therefore, our time and energy are best used if we channel them to our top priorities. Maxwell says that we can learn to prioritize by asking ourselves what is required of us (what we can do that no one else can), what gives us the greatest return for our effort, and what we find most rewarding.

I did enjoy many of the quotes from well-known individuals that Maxwell included in the text. My favorite was, "The water does not flow unless the faucet is turned on" (Louis L'Amour). Many of these quotes can be applied to everyday life, and not just leadership situations. Sometimes, however, I did feel that Maxwell threw in quotes "just for kicks" when they were not totally necessary. If he had elaborated on his points in his own words instead of someone else's, those points would have been stronger and clearer. Another irritation I experienced while reading the book was its occasional use of sexist language, both in the quotes Maxwell chose to incorporate and in his own words. Moreover, most, if not all, of the individuals he highlighted as displaying successful leadership were men. The only times he mentioned women's contributions were in reference to his wife, his personal assistant, or a woman who worked for him. In future books, Maxwell needs to focus on the sound leadership abilities of women as well as men.

In short, I would recommend this book if you want to improve your self-discipline, organizational skills, or people skills, even if you are not currently in a leadership position. Whether Maxwell realizes it or not, this book can be helpful to more people than just those who lead by profession.
