Ellen Meister has whipped up a batch of literary brain candy with her first novel Secret Confessions of the Applewood PTA. If you have an appetite for witty dialogue and a well crafted plot, you may have a hard time sticking to your daily page rationing. That was certainly my experience as I scarfed down all 372 pages in two days.
Meister offers more than just the guilty pleasure of empty carbs. Under Applewood's brilliant facade lurks deeper character. Her heroines are complex,and like women everywhere, must learn how to leverage their strengths and weakness to attain true success.

If you've ever been to a school event and looked at the people around you, did you think about what their inner lives might be like? The well dressed woman with the perfect manicure and the designer handbag may have won her fortune through terrible misfortune. The harried mom with the baby on her hip, the diaper bag slipping off her shoulder and the toddler trying to pull out of her grip - she may be a poor, stay at home mom or a high powered executive who barely has time to eat. This book will cause you to wonder even more.
Ellen Meister is a master of blending romance, mystery and humor in the form of what most people would pass off as "chick-lit". Secret Confessions of the Applewood PTA is one of those books you grab off the shelf with the intent of being entertained for a few hours, not expecting to be drawn into a world you might actually live in.

The three lives of PTA women come together when a talent scout picks their school for the location to shoot a movie starring a hot Hollywood actor. Ruth, Maddie, and Lisa form the committee to overlook the project. Strong friendships form as the trio taps through the surface of each other's lives.
Ruth is desperately trying to regain the intimacy that was lost after her husband had a stroke, leaving him an uninhibited and impotent sex-fiend. Maddie considers infidelity when she suspects her husband is having an affair with his cousin. And Lisa's quiet life is shaken up when her brash drunken mother comes to town.

You're not going to find a bomb-making recipe in this funny novel although you get the sense that some of the characters are quite capable of trying to make one, a small one, mind, that goes fizz in a most spectacular way. Any rate, the novel's still a blast. I, Male, enjoyed it. My kids'school here in Asia has a PTA--I just might have to become more active.

This is a well written book that is far above the typical quickie celebrity bios that you buy in the grocery store. The only qualm I have, is the subject. George Clooney is still rather early in his career. He's handsome and has made good decisions in picking movie parts but this isn't Clark Gable or Gary Cooper. He still has a long way to go before deserving the legend treatment that he gets from this book. Still, if you love George buy this book as a treat to yourself.

Edward R. Murrow, trailblazing journalist, produced a series of groundbreaking television shows in the 1950's, daring... just daring to suggest that a rampaging Congressman from Wisconsin was wrong. His courage, in the face of a not always supportive supervisors, in the face of politicians who would rage war against his characters, is tenable. This book is a salute, both to the award winning film, "Good Night, and Good Luck", and to the comparable Murrow and his re-visioning of news in America.
The book is a perfect companion piece to the film. Offering several retrospective articles, they are brief and illuminate the life and times during this paranoid period in history. An extensive question and answer session from George Clooney and Grant Heslov share their experiences with making this film.
The true work of art is the script. Spare, sparse, and wonderfully vibrant, the script glistens with the actual words of Murrow, and a taut drama to bring them on to television. My favorite scene in the movie translates to my favorite scene in the script, when Murrow, so eloquently, so precisely proclaims, "We're gonna go on with the story because the terror is right in this room." Bingo.
Some proclaim "Good Night, and Good Luck" to be a fluff propaganda piece designed to promulgate the liberal politicial fascinations of George Clooney, et. al. It seems no matter what the subject matter is, as long as Clooney is involved, that labeled is quickly slapped on it. However, this film resonates with a clear message, what's past is prolgue. Those who don't heed the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it.
The fact of the matter is, Murrow's words, spoken 50 years ago, are equally as true today. Fact is, we need the Murrows of the world, to stand, speak the truth, and fight for what is right. This film, this book, is a celebration of that.

This contains many pictures of George, from the time he was just starting his career to the present with pictures from all of his movies. I was surprised to see photos of George that I had never seen before! You can read about George's early career, from his films and television pilots that flopped...to his successful and most well known character Dr. Douglas Ross on ER. This book is divided into chapters so you can easily find out specific George information. There are 9 chapters starting with "Child's Play." In this chapter you can learn all the basics about George and his family. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it!

This book is a true ER and George Clooney masterpiece. The book ties in a biography of ER's greatest star and the show its self. I enjoyed this book from the begining to the end. This is a terrible book. The writter fills up space with drivel gained through People magazine articles and Hard Copy television shows. The book breathlessly meanders through George Clooneys life leaving the reader to think; "so what". The book is further padded with listings of web sites that have at least some connection with Clooney and synopisis' of "ER" shows. Not only did I waste my money buying this book, I wonder if I can sue the writter for the time I wasted reading this poor effort of a book.

Just in the past year I have become very interested in George Clooney and his life. This book is good for the first time Clooney fan. I went into this book knowing little about George. This book gives mostly facts, but they are great. In general I really loved the book, but it's major flaw is that the readers don't get to go under the skin of Mr. Clooney, to see what makes him tick. This is a good book if you are not a veteran George Clooney fan.

No communities are not a collection of assets, financial reports, and marketing, they are made up with people. This may be obvious. On the other hand, a large percentage of managers and leaders act as though people are robots there but to order around and attack if performance does not match expectations. Of course expectations have never been clarified, but that is an other story. If this description of management and leadership offends you, you really should be reading this book. There is a well documented better way to work with, reward, and encourage people. If we all treated people the way that is outlined in this book, our world would be a better place.
This is also a very easy to read book with clear and valuable recommendations. It is worthy of a learning group within your management team. Bring your managers together into circle and explore how to implement this principles. You will be glad you did.
Valuable Insights...Practical Advice.......2002-03-02
Those who have already read Kouzes and Posner's The Leadership Challenge will immediately realize that this volume provides a deeper examination of the concepts introduced in Part Six ("Encouraging the Heart") of the previously published work. After introducing and then discussing five "leadership practices common to successful leaders" and ten "behavioral commitments" among those leaders studied iwhile preparing to write The Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner focus on recognizing contributions (i.e. linking rewards with performance) and celebrating accomplishments (i.e. valuing the victories) in Part Six. In this volume, these two "leadership commitments" receive their full attention. The material is carefully organized within 12 chapters which range from "The Heart of Leadership" to "150 Ways to Encourage the Heart." Why did they write this book? There are four reasons.
Practicality: "We wanted to offer a set of principles, practices, and examples that would provide leaders with a repeatable process -- a set of essential actions --they could apply in their own settings."
Principle: "In this book, we not only demonstrate that encouraging the heart is not soft; we show how powerful a force it is in achieving high standards and stretch goals."
Curiosity: "We've been intrigued for some time by this finding that] "female constituents do not report that their leaders encourage the heart any more than do male constituents, regardless of the gender of their leader] and we wanted to explore the practice in depth to see if we could understand more about these differences."
Finally, "...because we wanted to add our voices to the discussion of soul and spirit in the workplace."
Kouzes and Posner note that the word "encouragement" has its root in the Latin word "cor" which literally means "heart." (So does the word "courage.") To have courage is to have heart. To encourage -- to provide with or give courage -- literally means to give others heart. For me, there are at least three especially important core concepts: First, love what you do. Love those for whom you are responsible. And love them enough to set high standards for them and then give them hope that you and they can meet those standards. Second, don't think of leadership in terms of position, title, power, status, etc. Rather, think of it in terms of initiative. Encourage, recognize and reward initiative whenever and wherever you find it throughout your entire organization. Third and finally, practice what you preach and do that every day. The most effective leaders care....and care deeply. They have credibility because their values and behavior are in unshakable alignment. They have earned others' trust.
