Book Description
Rapacious dykes, self-loathing closet cases, hustlers, ambiguous sophisticates, and sadomasochistic rich kids: most of what America thought it knew about gay people it learned at the movies. A fresh and revelatory look at sexuality in the Great Age of movie making, Screened Out shows how much gay and lesbian lives have shaped the Big Screen. Spanning popular American cinema from the 1900s until today, distinguished film historian Richard Barrios presents a rich, compulsively readable analysis of how Hollywood has used and depicted gays and the mixed signals it has given us: Marlene in a top hat, Cary Grant in a negligee, a pansy cowboy in The Dude Wrangler. Such iconoclastic images, Barrios argues, send powerful messages about tragedy and obsession, but also about freedom and compassion, even empowerment.
Mining studio records, scripts, drafts (including cut scenes), censor notes, reviews, and recollections of viewers, Barrios paints our fullest picture yet of how gays and lesbians were portrayed by the dream factory, warning that we shouldn't congratulate ourselves quite so much on the progress movies - and the real world -- have made since Stonewall.
Captivating, myth-breaking, and funny, Screened Out is for all film aficionados and for anyone who has sat in a dark movie theater and drawn strength and a sense of identity from what they saw on screen, no matter how fleeting or coded.
Customer Reviews:
Screened Out - revealing and a great read........2007-01-14
This literate, well written and fascinating history of the subtle and not so subtle portrayals of the gay and lesbian sensibility in Hollywood films, is comprehensive and endlessly informative and perceptive. Anyone with the slightest interest in film subtext and the wryly subversive nature which filmmakers can exhibit in their work (often under the radar of the studio brass) will find Richard Barrios a terrfic guide thorough the minefield of how Hollywood made pictures. From Clifton Webb to Marlene Dietrich, from antiques like "The Broadway Melody" to instant relics like "The Boys in the Band," the examples offered will stimulate the interest to reinvestigate many old film titles, and subsequently enrich the experience of watching them with a new perspective.
Screen out the world, and read!.......2003-08-14
For those interested in cinematic homosexuality, this book is simply a must-have! Composed with a liberal touch of arch lingua franca, the volume is toned and textured with as many gossipy asides, innuendos, and double entendres as the films discussed. The subject is dealt a much lighter hand than Vito Russo allotted its predecessor, The Celluloid Closet. Richard Barrios is utterly tickled pink at his discoveries, where Russo often seems to chafe. Even those familiar with the torturous course of outre theater will detect tidbits previously unperceived, and those not in-the-know will probably be astonished at pre-Production Code permissiveness regarding the depiction of fey/butch images. More remarkable is the under-the-radar, Code-busting bomblettes that went unsensed by the censors--and were subsequently reviled (or reveled in) by trade reviewers. A tad too much quill is sharpened criticizing fluffy, Day-class sixties comedies, when such goose down is found in every film era. (At least the author can be commended for not reading too much into Calamity Jane--or any other feature, for that matter. After all, a lesbian cult movie does not a lesbian movie make!) Barrios could also have refrained from the occasional canard regarding sexual orientation origins and Biblical history. Overall, though, this substantial book sticks solidly to the subject, examining numerous films (including shorts and cartoons) and their interrelationship with the political establishment and popular culture. Included are over 50 crisp photos and several vignette-bios. The prose has a fabulous flow that makes for a thoroughly enjoyable read and should hold the attention of anyone interested in the screen/society circle.

Book Description
Schenker’s Interpretive Practice is the first comprehensive study of this century’s most influential music theorist, Heinrich Schenker. Since the 1960s, American theorists and musicologists have focused almost exclusively on analytical methods distilled from Schenker’s writings. Breaking from that tradition, Robert Snarrenberg returns to Schenker’s texts and to the humanist roots of his approach, situating Schenker’s work in the broader context of his desire to portray the richness and particularity of musical experience. Snarrenberg concentrates on four aims that Schenker hoped to achieve: to present a theoretical account of musical effects encountered in European music of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, to represent the mindset shared among composers of that music, to convey the expressive interaction of musical effects in individual artwork, and to promote continued creative and re-creative participation in the musical tradition. Author recipient of the 1998 Young Scholar Award from the Society of Music Theory.
Customer Reviews:
A Rich Interpretation.......2007-08-23
This book won its author a prestigious award from the premier scholarly organization for music theory in the United States, and the award was fully deserved. The book offers a very enlightening approach to Schenker's work, one that includes both considerable technical detail and a great deal of fascinating intellectual and musical background. Any student of Schenker will find valuable insights in the book to supplement the analytical training that is the more usual focus of work with Schenkerian theory.
NOT Schenker's Interpretive Practice.......2001-08-31
An extremely bad misrepresentation of Schenker and his work. In the first place the author uses only his own translations in the text, and very many of them are mistranslations of a more or less serious nature. For example, he mistranslates the verb "besteht [in]" (consists in) as "gets its start in"; this mistranslation has fateful consequences for his reading (misreading) of Schenker's interpretive practice. (There are literally scores of translation mistakes, some of them involving the most elementary German.) The author's attempts to portray Schenker's thought process in analyzing music are ludicrous, the work of a person who entirely lacks the requisite training for such an endeavor, and has no conception of who Schenker was and how he thought about music.

Customer Reviews:
first light and easy was heavy and hard.......2006-02-10
The first puzzle in this book in the Light and Easy section was very difficult. I solved the second one without too much trouble but had friends help do the first one. Not the best book to start out with.
Also the sudoku in this book aren't symetrical like I saw in my friend's Japanese published book.
It was cheap and fit into my cargo pants pocket so I can't complain too much.

An Idea That Did Not Need to Happen.......2007-10-05
When I purchased this book, I thought it was simply a new edition of the original book of the same title. After all, why would it be necessary to "ABRIDGE" a 111-page book? Anyway, I ordered 12 copies of it as I was using it for a class. Only too late did I discover it was a shortened version of the original masterpiece (and Amazon would not exchange it for what I wanted). I suppose the book was reissued in this format as part of a new marketing effort associated with the DVD movie of the same name.
Whatever the reason, there is no need to buy this instead of the original title --which is a jewel for anyone's library!
Original thoughts on "Science, Religion & Spirituality".......2007-10-02
Chopra is a master story teller and doctor by profession. He presents traditional eastern religious views in most of his writings. He hardly presents anything original. If you really like to seek the truth from religious and scientific point of view, I will recommend: "Science, Religion & Spirituality" which is now available on Amazon. Enjoy!

7 Spiritual Laws say it all!.......2007-09-29
The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success is easy to understand, yet beautifully written. The 3rd Law, the Law of "Karma" or Cause and Effect, helped me change my perspective during a difficult time in my life from feelings of extreme guilt to a sense of empowerment.
Deepka wrote that under the seventh spiritual law of success, the Law of Dharma, that we have "taken manifestation in physical form to fulfill a purpose... You have a talent that is unique in its expression, so unique that there's no one else alive on this planet that has that talent, or that expression of that talent. This means that there's one thing you can do, and one way of doing it, that is better than anyone else...." I draw upon these words for strength when I doubt my ability to do the work I wish to put forth in this world.
This is one of those books that might make a terrific gift for someone who is curious about spiritual concepts, but feels intimidated about getting into the subject. Highly recommended.
Excellent !!!.......2007-09-26
I purchased this book in July of 2007. I finished it quickly but I still refer to it almost on a dailly basis. It is a wonderful book that should be in everyone's personal library.
