It introduces readers to the currents and common interests of contemporary Russian cinema, offers close studies of the work of filmmakers like Sokurov, Muratova and Astrakhan, reviews the Russian film industry in a period of massive economic transformation, and assesses cinema's function as a definer of Russia's new identity.

"The Battleship Potemkin," "By the Law," "Mother," "Earth," "Man With a Movie Camera," "Alexander Nevsky": Russia and the Soviet Union produced some of the greatest films the world has ever seen. Leyda has written a riveting history of the pioneers and artists who made these films. His acclaimed book tells the story of the industry that spawned them and the revolution that both inspired and crushed them.

    Book Description

This history of the turbulent destiny of Kino ("film" in Russian) documents the artistic development of the Russian and Soviet cinema and traces its growth from 1896 to the death of Sergei Eisenstein in 1948. The new Postscript surveys the directions taken by Soviet cinema since the end of World War II. Beginning with the Lumiere filming of the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II, Jay Leyda links Russia's pre-Revolutionary past with its Communist present through the observation of a major cultural phenomenon: the evolution of the Soviet film as an artistic and political instrument. The book contains 150 drawings and photographs and five appendices, including a list of selected Russian and Soviet films from 1907 to the present.

Yesterday evening I received by mail a long and unexpected gift. A golden friend sent me a reproduction of this treasured book. And that 's why I just slept few hours tonight, reading here and there the invaluable and remarkable information around the development of the Russian Cinema.

Jay Leda -his author- worked untiringly during three years around the Schools and Cinematographic Soviet Studies. His tour de force allowed him to explore all the impressive amount of material, never released overseas, and obviously known works in the Western World. He made a vivid and authorized portrait of the artistic trajectory of different filmmakers and their works.

Kino is dedicated to any interested reader about the theme as well the specialist, it has been documented with statements of creators, critics and valuable illustrations, some of them never posted previously. It includes besides, a selected catalogue of premiered films between 1908 and 1958, with interesting details about directors, screenwriters, interpreters
    and scenographers.

    It is a must buy.

    Book Description

Dziga Vertov was one of the greatest innovators of Soviet cinema. The radical complexity of his work--in both sound and silent forms--has given it a central place within contemporary theoretical inquiry. Vertov's writings, collected here, range from calculated manifestos setting forth his heroic vision of film's potential to dark ruminations on the inactivity forced upon him by the bureaucratization of the Soviet state.

a really good collection of his writings. I couldn't help but enjoy the naive and ideological enthusiam for his vision of filmmaking, especially when considering the box office rubbish that gets churned out every week. this book is ideal for anyone interested in film from that era or who has strong ideas about how to make films

    Book Description

The story of Soviet film in the period covered by Peter Kenez is central to the history of world cinema. The author explores the roots of Soviet cinema in the film heritage of pre-Revolutionary Russia; the changes in content, style, technical means, and production capacities generated by the Revolution of 1917; the constraints on form and subject imposed from the 1930s in the name of Socialist Realism; the relative freedom of expression accorded to film-makers during World War Two; and the extraordinary repression during the final years of the Stalin era.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Book on Soviet Cinema.......2002-08-05

Anyone who wants to understand the movies of the Soviet Union should start with this book. It is very thorough and written in a lively, bright style that is free of academic jargon.

Kenez begins with the pre-Revolutionary film industry and shows how it broke down and was built back up by the Soviets. He pays equal attention to the "high art" films that were famous in the West for decades (those of Eisenstein and Pudovkin) and the entertainment films that attracted the average Soviet citizen (such as the musical comedies of the 1930s, like "Volga-Volga.") He shows how Soviet movies responded to the imposition of Socialist Realism, World War II, and the cultural freeze of the late Stalin era.

The only problem with this book is that it is TOO SHORT. Upon reaching the end, the reader wants to see Kenez tackle the films of the Khrushchev Thaw and the Brezhnev era. However, one should be thankful for what one has, and in this volume, one has a truly indispensible book.

    Book Description

During "the thaw" from Stalin’s death in 1953 to the late 1960s and Khrushchev’s rule, Soviet society experienced major transformations. So did films. In this first comprehensive account of the relationship between politics and cinema in this period, Josephine Woll skillfully interweaves cultural history with film analysis to explore how movies at once responded to the changes around them and helped engender them. She considers dozens of individual films within the context of Khrushchev’s policies and the artistic foment they inspired.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Book.......2002-06-17

REAL IMAGES is a very interesting look at Soviet Cinema from 1953 to 1967. I can't think of another book that deals with the films of this era so completely. It is the book to turn to when one has finished Peter Kenez's history of Soviet Cinema to 1953.

What makes the book so interesting is that the author has investigated the background to each film, such as the controversy that projects such as "Carnival Night," "Nine Days of One Year" and "Ilich's Gate/I Am Twenty" generated before and during filming. These critical responses are tied to the political shifts of the Khrushchev era.

If there are any drawbacks, it is that the book opens slow, but then the interesting films didn't really start appearing until 1956. Also, the Shakespeare films of Soviet directors aren't really covered, but I can understand why the author made that choice.

Still, the positive features far outweigh any criticism. The book gives new perspective on directors such as Mikhail Romm, and shows the start of the careers of directors such as Eldar Riazonov and Elim Klimov. It adds flesh and spirit to the overviews of "Thaw" era Soviet cinema that appeared in The Most Important Art and other books.

Strongly recommended to anyone with an interest in Soviet cinema in general or European film of the Fifties and Sixties.

      Book Description

Forward Soviet! is the first comprehensive account of Soviet documentary output during the years between the "Great October Socialist Revolution" and the "Great Patriotic War." Drawing on previously closed State archives, Graeme Roberts re-views the great examples of Soviet and world non-fiction cinema and uncovers many fine and intriguing little-known films. He discusses the careers of men and women who made them, including Vertov, Shub, Medvedkin and Karmen and investigates the problems of analysis and context, while offering valuable insights into that context. Forward Soviet! is a powerful demonstration of how the history of Soviet non-fiction film can give insight into the agencies that shaped Soviet history and culture.

This is a classic! Speilmann presents numerous sacrifices by theme and gives agreat examples. This book has stood the test of time and is still worthwhile to get. Perfect books to compliment this are "Art of Attack in Chess" and "Winning Chess Traps: Tactics in the Opening". All three of these books will give you exactly what you need to be fully covered when it comes to fully understanding everything to do with Attacking Chess and Sacrificing!

Rudolf Spielmann's work is not perfect, but if read in the right frame-of-mind can be an extremely rewarding read.

This is not a manual on the mechanics of kingside attacks, in the vein of Vukovic's "Art of Attack in Chess," or Znosko-Borovsky's "The Art of Chess Combination." Neither is it a tactical workbook, such as Fred Reinfeld's works or Fred Wilson's works or, for that matter, Laszlo Polgar's magnum opus "Chess: 5,334 Problems, Combinations, and Games." Every one of those books/authors mentioned is worth reading, but this is a DIFFERENT KIND of work.

The book that readily comes to mind as being in the same "family" as this work is Tal and Damsky's "Attack with Mikhail Tal," but unlike that (masterpiece!) Spielmann's work does not require a Master's Degree in Attacking Chess! :-)

Now that I've compared "The Art of Sacrifice in Chess" to other types of attacking books you may be thinking of purchasing, let me finally speak about the book itself!

Yes, Spielmann's choice of classification and terminology may be called into question, but that does not in any way detract from the book itself. What Spielmann does in this book better than any other intermediate book I can think of, is reveal HOW THE SACRIFICE AFFECTS THE REMAINING PIECES ON THE ATTACKING AND DEFENDING SIDES! For example, one of his games begins 1.e4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.e5 Nfd7 and now Spielmann plays 4.e6!? After 4...fxe6, Spielmann brilliantly demonstrates (through his play and especially through the annotations!) how White was able to win the game by constricting the Black forces behind the e-pawns on e7,e6. The line of thinking runs: if there is a pawn on e6 (extra though it may be), the bishop on c8 cannot really come out, which in turn entombs the rook on a8! There are other similar examples of this thought process throughout the book. You will also notice how, for example, minor piece sacrifices in the center suddenly cause the attacking side's rooks and queen to spring to life with decisive force!

Many of the examples in the book are complex, but in nearly all cases you can see Spielmann's THOUGHT PROCESS, and you understand why he made the decisions he made. To me this book has a lot of value, and thank goodness it is a departure from all those insipid Morphy games with "sac, sac, mate" on f7 against an uncastled king.

4 out of 5 stars There are pros and cons.......2005-04-12

I read this book after I finished "Art of Attack in Chess" and "Art of Chess Combination". Compared to those other two, this book is not that good. It's only a collection of Rudolf Spielmann's games, so the ideas and styles would be limited. He did explain a little bit on the sacrifices, but not enough on the conditions. For further information, you can read the other two books I mentioned above. And if you've read those two before, it's a great opportunity to examine how much you've understood in real complete games. Or you can try to analyse the games yourself and compare with the text moves.

Another thing I want to mention is that I cannot agree with the author on his categorization of the sacrifices. All sacrifices are sham sacrifices. Material is only one of the imbalances on the chess board (read Jeremy Silman's book). So the sacrifice we usually refer to is about material. We should always gain something from the wood we give up, such as time, space, initiative, position, lead in development and etc.

But the book is still not bad for its price, at least I enjoyed it.

                    5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2003-04-14

Spielmann was a great combinative player from the first half of the 20th century. He played against Capablanca, Alekhine, Lasker, Tarrasch, Rubinstein etc. In this fabulous book he explains the foundation of combinative play: deep positional understanding, and not necessarily calculation power. In practical play it is most of the times not possible to calculate all the ramifications of a "real sacrifice" (this is Spielmann's therminology for those sacrifices which do not yield an immediate check mate or recovery of the material sacrificed). In such cases the sacrifice is based on positional understanding, not calculation power. Tal used to play like this; Shirov comes to mind as another example. A classic book. For this price do not think twice: buy it!

This is not a book bean counters will enjoy to say the very least :)... If you like to throw caution to the wind and go for broke... This is a pretty good book to consider picking up and reading :)... It uses old descriptive notation so that might not go over well with some. Still just reading the words I found to be pretty enjoyable. I like how he talks about the Sham sac and some other things. For the price it is really worth thinking about getting with another book or order. The contents of the book are setup sorta interesting...

                    Part 1 deals with
                    The Various Types of Sacrifices

Sham Sacrifices, Positional Sacrifices, Sacrifices for gain and Mating Sacrifice... Then he gets into what he calls Real Sacrifices... They include Sacs for development, Obstructive Sacs, Preventing (or anti-castling) Sacs... Other sacs he gets into are Line-Clearance Sacs, Vacating Sacs, Deflecting or Decoy Sacs, (Castled) King's Field Sac and King-Hunt Sac...

Part II deals with Sacrificial Values :)...

This mostly consists of the Exchange Sac and the Queen Sac... A few examples are given for each of the listed type of sacs... So its pretty interesting how they break it up in the Contents page... This book is also 197 pages, so its pretty good value for the price. If this book might fit your style, I would think about picking it up...

I've known Diane DiResta's work for many years. She is the "Queen of Presentations". Her book provides a no-nonsense approach to the art of clear, precise and meaningful communications to audiences large and small. I've taught Presentation Skills courses myself for over 25 years in the corporate world and I refer to her works in almost a "biblical" sense. She knows what she's saying. She's been there, she's done that! Great primer.

5 out of 5 stars A practical and useful book.......2006-03-20

Another reviewer said it is not often that a book lives up to its title: especially with words like 'power' and 'pizzaz' as part of the promise. This book certainly did for me. It is not full of jargon. It is not full of pictures and distraction. What it does have it clear ideas, simply given that you can immediately put into practise.
The book covers basics like dealing with nerves as well as advanced issues like presenting with an interpreter. This makes it a great choice for all levels of presenter.
A great addition to anyone's library for a small dollar purchase.

2 out of 5 stars General Advices About Public Speech.......2006-01-27

The book is about how you should prepare to public speech. It talks about how to setup a stage, how to work with a michrophone, how to walk in a stage and the known advices as 'know your audience' and 'rehearse'.

I think this might be good reading if you lack any clue about the process but for people that need to improve their presentation skills it's not worth. Also there's almost nothing on tips for preparing slides (the most common media, I think).

The author keeps giving infinite acronyms where she wants to work on topics (almost all topic groups gets its own) and it's really annoying.

I have read hundreds and hundreds of books on how to give presentations. Diresta adds to the genre through sheer force of simple clarity. She cuts through the clutter and helps people focus on the fundamentals they need to go from a poor to good speaker and from a good to great presenter. This book should be in the library of any serious student of speaking.

I have a shelf full of other presentation skill books, but Knockout Presentations is still the one I reference and pass along. Should be on every business person's desk, in libraries, and in college book stores. Good bang for the buck.
