Book Description

One of the movies' greatest actors and most colorful characters, a real-life tough guy with the prison record to prove it, Robert Mitchum was a movie icon for an almost unprecedented half-century, the cool, sleepy-eyed star of such classics as The Night of the Hunter; Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison; Cape Fear; The Longest Day; Farewell, My Lovely; and The Winds of War. Mitchum's powerful presence and simmering violence combined with hard-boiled humor and existential detachment to create a new style in movie acting: the screen's first hipster antihero-before Brando, James Dean, Elvis, or Eastwood-the inventor of big-screen cool.Robert Mitchum: "Baby, I Don't Care" is the first complete biography of Mitchum, and a book as big, colorful, and controversial as the star himself. Exhaustively researched, it makes use of thousands of rare documents from around the world and nearly two hundred in-depth interviews with Mitchum's family, friends, and associates (many going on record for the first time ever) ranging over his seventy-nine years of hard living. Written with great style, and vividly detailed, this is an intimate, comprehensive portrait of an amazing life, comic, tragic, daring, and outrageous.

5 out of 5 stars Baby I Don't Care, But You Will About This Bio.......2007-08-25

If Robert Mitchum was a favorite actor, if you're interested in Hollywood history, or larger, funnier than life true stories, or if you just like well written and superbly researched biographies, then this book is for you.

My only criticism is Lee Server leaves you wanting for more, for revealing the tantalizing crazy tales shared to him in interviews, but for concerns of privacy and libel suits, he could not disclose.

I look forward to reading his new book on Ava Gardner, even though I don't care much for Hollywood.

4 out of 5 stars You'll Learn Alot About This Interesting Person.......2007-08-10

Robert Mitchum was NOT one of my favorite actors before reading this book. I didn't appreciate his films very much nor his acting ability. But, after reading the book, I learned that I was wrong. He was a great actor and he was in SOME wonderful films! Plus, the guy was a "maverick" which makes him even more interesting as a personality. This book is worth your time. You'll go back and rent some of the movies in which Mr. Mitchum appeared and enjoy them more than you would have before reading this book. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars What a Man!.......2007-05-22

They don't make them like him anymore. This was a very well researched book and I enjoyed it very much. One of the things that I thought about while reading it was that Mr. Mitchum remained at RKO in spite of inferior movies and roles because he remained loyal to Howard Hughes who stuck by him after his arrest for using marijuana. What might he have done if he had been at a different studio? Then again if he was with another studio his career might have been over then and there.
One other thing. His wife stayed with him through countless affairs and public humilations. Ava Gardner even called her and asked her to let him go! That was some kind of love. Mr. Mitchum should have been more impressed with her.

5 out of 5 stars baby, I don't care..........2007-04-03

they don't make them like this anymore..a man unto himself..answering to no one but himself..entering LA on a train as a hobo..smoking the wild weed along the route..and leaving Hollywood as an icon of the American screen...Lee Server writes a memorable book..no sugar coating here..a man who could see through the bs of the business and who was never enamored with being a star only with doing the work with integrity..he'll never be canonized but to truly appreciate him, read this wonderful book and then watch one of his films..God, we need more like him today...

2 out of 5 stars Assi's dropped the ball this time.......2007-05-05

I have purchased ten or so guitar and bass guitar method books from this publisher since '85 and I waited several months for Amazon to finially get this book in, I guess I was one of the first to order it.

I give the book 2 stars because Peter Gelling put together a comprehensive text. However, much of it was taken from his earlier works -1 star. Gelling teaches the CAGED method for those guitarists who care. If you don't know what the CAGED system is buy the Book, "Fretboard Logic Vol. 1&2" to find out it is cheap.

There are 2 CD's with musical examples included and their are several examples under each number given as a title on the CD (some CD formats will only allow you to go up to 99), There should be 5 or 6 CDs with this book instead of all of the info put into two as it is very difficult to use so -2 more stars.

Blues You Can Use is a much better buy than Peter Gelling's "Blues Guitar Manual" IMHO.

2 out of 5 stars Why would you buy this?.......2006-09-18

Unless you have examined this book in person, there's just not enough information here to make you want to buy it. Apparently this does come with a CD or two, though you have to examine this ad very closely to realize that.

If you are a beginning guitar player wishing to learn the blues, maybe there's a better chance that you MIGHT learn something from this book (other than not to waste money on an instruction book you haven't examined, of course). But as an experienced guitar player, there's next to no information for me to determine whether it holds any value for me.

        NEXT!

5 out of 5 stars Great Blues Guide.......2006-08-14

I have several of this publishers stuff. All good. This is an excellent book / cd package for beginners to intermediate players that want to learn the blues.

        5 out of 5 stars Another Great Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh! Book.......2004-12-22

First off, this book is 144 pages, making it larger than most of the other Pojo's books. Nice!

This book is broken down into a few sections: Anime, TCG, DDM & Video Games.

Anime - BAZ from TVTome does about 10 pages of character bios, and 20 pages on the anime storlylines so far. Including a glimpse at things to come.

Trading Card Game - The bulk of the book. There are Top 10 Lists from all the sets (2 pages on each set). Then Decks to Beat by some of the best players in the world, and a lot of strategy articles and puzzles.

Dungeon Dice Monsters - Never played it, but there's an article on it.

Video Games - Pojo dedicates 1/2 page to every YuGiOh Video Game, and reviews them all. There's more than a dozen games, so its a decent section.

Overall, for about $10, this is well worth your money. About the same price as Beckett's YuGiOh magazine, but bigger and way better.

With this book, Six Sigma is revealed to everyone.  You might be in a company that’s already implemented Six Sigma, or your organization may be considering it.  You may be a student who wants to learn how it works, or you might be a seasoned business professional who needs to get up to speed. In any case, Six Sigma For Dummies is the most straightforward, non-intimidating guide on the market. This simple, friendly book makes Six Sigma make sense.

With a compelling foreword by Dr. Stephen R. Covey, the internationally recognized leadership authority and bestselling author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and The 8 th Habit, and an afterword by Roxanne O’Brasky, President of the International Society of Six Sigma, Six Sigma For Dummies is the most complete and objective book in the market today.

Very often we even don't notice how many Sigma and Statistic terms are in our everyday language, especially when we completed several Sigma projects for laste several years. Have you ever experienced that your team members ('greenies' especially) or senior managers, to whom you present your results, can hardly understand what you are speaking about? In case yes, this book is the key. Read it and make things simple for the end-user of the project. Read it and train your team. Read it and refresh your experience.

4 out of 5 stars Six Sigma for Dummies.......2007-06-27

I think it is a great book. The subject is very complicated, but the writer tries to break it down into little pieces.

4 out of 5 stars Good Perspective Broadener, Light on details.......2007-06-27

I purchased this book to get my toes wet after hearing about six sigma design for a long time. It's typical of the 4Dum stuff in format, self deprecating humor, and all that. I liked their intros to 'T' and 'F' statistics, and basic design of experiments, which I'd never had formal training in. After reading it, I had some idea of what they were good for and why you'd want to know that stuff. I was disappointed, if not surprised, that these sections had little depth past giving you a taste. Hey, it's a 4D book that you paid a little over 10 bucks for. What did you expect?

There are some issues with typos and formatting, especially in that some formulas are clearly missing, mis-formatted, or wrong (square root signs crossing over comma separators and such.

That said, I spent a few hours reading the book and felt like I knew a lot more about 6-sigma terms and ideas, enough to start looking for deeper books on the subject. For what it is, I thought it was good quick bang for the buck in learning about the area.

          5 out of 5 stars A very enlightening book........2007-02-16

Six Sigma is a very complicated process. This book is written in simple language, thus helping the reader understand it and enjoy it.

          5 out of 5 stars Good primer..........2007-01-24

This book is good for people asking "what is this six sigma thingy and could it be useful for work?" Gives the basics without going into any detail about how to implement for a given business. A decent read to start with in the Six Sigma world, however further book reading and real training would be required to get a grasp of Six Sigma overall.

5 out of 5 stars 6sigma Theory to Practice made easy.......2007-01-09

Being an Academic and a Black Belt myself as well as a practicing manager for 15 years at Fortune 100/500 companies, I found this book an excellent practical guide to introduce people in the SixSigma concept.

Statistical concepts that usually trouble people are presented in an easy to read format with examples that link 6sigma theory to 6sigma practice thus preparing the reader to take rational-scientific and fact-oriented action in the business world.

Though I bought this book out of curiosity, I found it very enjoyable indeed! In my opinion this book can be used not only by starters in the 6sigma methodology but it can also be used for 6sigma training purposes as well as for review and reference purposes by the practioners.

          5 out of 5 stars Soxcess!.......2007-08-25

The provisions for Sarbanes-Oxley compliance are only mandatory for
public companies that file a Form 10-K with the SEC - however, more and
more companies are being encouraged {pressured?} to voluntarily
comply with SOX - a good example of which is the United States Postal
Service. Why is this? Because in a free market capitalistic society,
there exists a need to bolster investor confidence in the reliability of
publicly reported financial information. No one wants another Enron.

This book does a great job of laying out - soup to nuts - the SOX
landscape and its key provisions. Everything from the AICPA checklist to
WorldCom misconduct, and everything in between (Arthur Andersen
[remember them?], COBIT, COSO, Enron, Kenneth Lay [departed], and Sox
Sections a plenty - presenting an excellent and at times compelling
picture of Sox, how we got here, and where we're going.

SOX was enacted July 30, 2002 - so if you feel the need to rapidly
graduate off the "SOX dummies list" [their title, not mine], then by
all means get this book!, and be a Soxcess!

          5 out of 5 stars It's All There.......2007-08-03

Great book. Simple and complete. Sox is explained in easy to understand language. I recommend.

          4 out of 5 stars Great for non-financial executives.......2007-06-08

I am a CFO of a public company as well as a partner in a CPA firm. The book was very informative but for me it was 75% stuff I already knew. The software chapter was heplful but seemed biased. The book has several minor technical errors but nothing that would really mislead a novice. I bought 5 more copies to give to my controller, board chairman and a division president, as well as to two clients. My six year old son gets a real kick out of the title and exclaims "Sarbanes Oxley for Dummies!" every time he sees it on my night table (could he be a budding SOX consultant??).

1 out of 5 stars Publisher should read "Printing for Dummies".......2007-06-08

The introduction was good ... then about 30 or 40 pages into the book, the subject suddenly changed to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Yes, somehow the printer put about 40 pages from a different book into this one! Amazon easily accepted the return. But from now on, I will need to touch a "(Fill in the Blank) for Dummies" book before I buy it.

5 out of 5 stars SOX for Dummies.......2007-02-13

This book is great.....very easy read, interesting and informative. It gives you a background on how the stockmarket got started and all the insight since the great depression and the crash through to the scandals of today. It too bad that history does repeat it self.
