Dover's reprints most of the time are outstanding!.......2005-07-30
Sure, there can occasionally be problems with reprints of older editions (and I've seen some quite poor ones at that, notably with Belwin-Kalmus!); however, this one of Dover (as well as their reprint of the same composer's opera "Pelléas et Mélisande") is not one I'd slight in the least. My copy has very few problems indeed. I recommend this one unreservedly!
The Problem with Reprints.......2004-02-07
As the earlier reviewer pointed out, this Dover edition is a reprint of the orginal Durand score issued in the first decade of the 20th century. The downside of a reprint edition, especially from French publishers, who had a very distinctive engraving style, is that stems and staves tend to disappear in places, which makes it hard to read. Even so, Dover does a great service by making this masterpiece (I don't use that term lightly!) available at a reasonable price. If you really want to have a clean modern engraving, you'll have to shell out more than $100 for the cloth-bound critical edition.
Dissapointing printing.......2003-06-22
The music is of course fantastic, but I was dissapointed by the quality of the printing in this volume. Sometimes note stems are virtually nonexistent, and the very small verbal instructions are almost impossible to read. The reason for this is not Dover's fault; it's because this book was printed directly from ancient master plates of the original French editions. In fact, all of Dover's "reproductions of old French editions" series seem to share the same problems. Yet none of Dover's German editions has the problem. Oh well, I guess all I can say is: Let the Buyer Beware.

La Mer stands at the center of Debussy's achievement. Described by the composer as "a seascape without figures," it is arguably the greatest and most original French symphony. This is a cute little book of direct copies of one of the early editions of this work. If you like Debussy's atmosferes and orchestal colors, having this blueprint can provide you with insights on how the magic it's done.

The essays deal with a range of subjects relating to opera, symphonic poem, instrumental music, cultural context, reception, and Janá^Dvcek as music theorist and analyst. The present Edition of the Complete Works of Claude Debussy is being published in 34 volumes, under the auspices of the French Ministry of Culture, the Centre national de la Recherche scientifique, and the Biblioteque nationale de France. The volumes are divided into the following categories: 1. Piano works 2. Songs 3. Chamber music 4. Choral Works 5. Orchestral Works 6. Theatrical works In each volume, the music is preceded by a foreword retracing the music's genesis, and is followed by the critical notes describing sources, editorial method, and variants. Particularly significant variants are emphasized in the list of variants by bar references printed in bold type. All known sources (sketches, manuscripts, proofs, editions, post-publication revisions, correspondence, historical recordings) are examined in detail. The musical text proposes the comoser's final intended version, as far as this can be ascertained. In cases where a work exists in two significantly different finished versions, both are published. When such variants concern only isolated passages, the earlier versions are given in appendix. Works hitherto unpublished, and unfinished works, are published as far as the state of the sources permits.

really for the clueless.......2005-09-20
This was not at all worth buying. Worthless information. very very basic. Thought it would help my game but is full of nonsense. dont buy, save money.bad, bad, bad!!
Workable suggestions.......2003-05-24
The suggestions in this book could be used effectively at mini baccarat,if the casino does not burn a card after the end of every deal like they do at some asian casinos. Also, there is the shuffling machine barrier to deal with which is difficult to figure out.
You may have the best strategies but if the casinos do their very best to minimise card counters and people who shuffle spook then a totally different approach to the game is neccessary if you want to get a better fighting chance at the tables.
Remarkable study of the game of Baccarat.......2003-02-28
This is probably the best book on Baccarat, and I preciously keep my copy for reference. John May's mastery of all historical, social and quantitative aspects of the game is remarkable. My only complaint is that the author tends to get carried away when he suggests "winning" strategies. Don't expect to find a practical way of making money in this book: unfortunately, a baccarat deck is much more stable than a blackjack deck. Still, if someone ever finds a winning strategy for baccarat, he will probably have read this book.
Finally, a very minor point: there is a small mistake in the description of the rules of Baccarat Banque... although since Baccarat Banque is hardly ever played today it does not really matter.
The DEFINITIVE Book on Baccarat.......2001-11-17
This is by far the best of 3 books I've read on Baccarat. I find it hard to believe that another book would have any more to add. The counting system is difficult (to perform, not to understand) but mathematically viable.
Avoid John Patrick's book at all costs.
Best book if you truly want to win at Baccarat.......2001-02-11
I just want to say that John has a counting system in this book that is hard for the casino to beat. I have only been playing his system for about a week now and I am up about $1500 and I only started with about $200, I think with his system you can bet the casino over time, that is just my view, but I can tell you I have not been this lucky in all my life, I have been out to the casino 6 times and only lost once.

Robert's for Dummies works!.......2007-08-25
This was actually for my wife, who is currently parliamentarian for a local non-profit organization, which she has some prior experience at. Nonetheless, as soon as the book arrived, she curled up and read it "cover to cover" and made a bunch of notes from it to share with others. Next thing I knew, she was putting her official Robert's Rules away in storage, so like many of the "Dummies" books, this seems to be the practical knowledge most of us actually need.

Great way to get a fast handle on chairing meetings. The meeting I chaired after reading this book went so much smoother than the previous meetings. Would recommend this book for any new board member. Also provides a quick reference for seldom used procedural issues that arrise.

This book can easily be read cover to cover in one sitting, then can be used as a reference book for questions pertaining to parlimentary procedure. I especially appreciate the author's understanding of the psychology of presiding, not just the Rules.
