Book Description
Sparkling miniature opera, filled with intense drama and elegant song, lasts no more than an hour, yet unfolds a virtuoso range of expressive music, from a high-spirited sailors' dance to Dido's touching lament "When I am laid in earth." First presented in 1689, remains the oldest operatic work still popularly performed. Authoritative early edition.
Customer Reviews:
Very Good Baroque Opera!.......2000-05-03
This very short Baroque opera composed by Purcell, is probably the best English baroque opera. I contains the most beautiful lament "When I am laid in the earth" is the most beautiful opera air. Also, the final chorus ending in Gm is very beautiful. The score contains the instrumentation, the table of contents, and critical notes on the piece. The editor actually put in the Harpsichord part instead of having the Basso line with Figured Bass so that is an advantage. The Opera takes little over an hour, and the score is full of Basso Continuo arias. buy this score if you are a baroque lover!

Book Description
Purcell's Dido and Aeneas stands as the greatest operatic achievement of 17th-century England, despite the fact that it was originally composed not for the public theatre but for a private girls' school in Chelsea and takes little more than an hour to perform. Ellen Harris examines the work, s historical position in the Restoration theatre, and shows that, far from being an operatic anomaly, it was deeply rooted in 17th-century English theatrical and music traditions. Her book summarises the cultural climate in which Dido and Aeneas was composed, surveying the choice of subject matter and analysing Nahum Tate's libretto in the light of 17th-century English conventions of the writing of text for musical setting. It goes on to evaluate the various surviving sources -- all of which post-date the first performance by at least 80 years -- and compares them with the original libretto, discussing the various inconsistencies that arise. There is also a detailed discussion of contemporary musical declamation and ground bass composition. The final section of the book is concerned with the work's performance history and critical reception from the first performance, through the late 18th-century adaptation, to the revivals of the 19th and 20th centuries, The Appendices include a historical survey of national premieres and of editions, and a critical discography.

A collection of annotated games from Purdy's previous publications. The first 25 games are world championship games. The next 25 are grandmasters in conflict while the last 50 are master-level combat from his friends Down Under.
If you have not read over games the Purdy has annotated, you are in for a wonderful treat. Who better to analyze games than the world's first correspondence chess champion?
Customer Reviews:
CJS Purdy...one of the finest chess teachers ever.......2006-02-01
in my chess library, there is no single author that I would not consider selling with the exception of CJS Purdy. I try to get my hands on EVERYTHING written by this man.
so many chess books are over the head of the under 2000 player, but Purdy writes for us, and to us, and brings such practical observations, without assumptions, that one cannot help but to grow from his teaching, and enjoy him as a writer. The rare humility of a great chess player comes shining through his pen....get everything you can by CJS Purdy...enjoyable reading.
great book for players under Elo 2000.......2003-01-12
This book contains 100 master games annotated by Purdy: 25 world championship games from Botvinnik to Spassky, 25 grandmaster games from tournaments, and 50 master games from Australasia. In his notes, Purdy tries to elucidate the ideas behind the players' moves rather than reeling off long variations of analysis. However, when required, Purdy did include analysis of his own. In this, he was very good as evidenced by his achievement of winning the first World Correspondence Chess Championship. The book also includes tips on playing the openings, middlegame, and endgame as well as the playing over of grandmaster games (a form of solitaire chess). Perhaps the most useful part of the book is Purdy's system of thinking which the student should use to decide upon his moves. Purdy developed his system many years before Jeremy Silman elaborated the Silman Thinking Technique in his book How to reassess your chess. Purdy's system of thinking is also discussed in more detail in his other book The Search for Chess Perfection. My only complaint with the book (a minor flaw) is that information about the tournament and year in which some of the games were played is not included. Highly recommended.
Product Description
The last in the Annotated Series of games and articles from the senior Chess World editor. The largest of the books. Not only practical and teachable, the games offer excellent examples of master play from a different part of the world--a world very much appreciated by Purdy.
Book Description
Volume 2 of C.J.S. Purdy's Fine Art of Annotation series continues in the same vein as the first. Purdy is one of the best annotators in chess history, honing his skills by writing "Chess World" for many years.
Here are 120 more games for you to absorb, along with 13 articles from Purdy's various publications.
Customer Reviews:
one of most interesting book about Fischer........2005-01-31
I have 4 or 5 books about Fischer, but this one is different. It shows Fischer, the person. Seven contributors recalled their personal contacts with Fischer. Their encounters were first-hand, so their stories are truer. There are no deep chess analyses in this book, however they are the important games during Fischer's career. This is no problem, because I can find the analyses in other books or magazines, or even from chess programs. The interviews, stories, experience, observation that the authors shared enlighten me many points about Fischer. He is incredible, demanding bunch of money to play the championship with Spassky; then rejecting more money when having to defend his title. He turned down large sum of money when asked to write a book about the match. How could he rack up long strings of wins without allowing a single draw along? And these games were against the GMs. This book also has many good pictures along his exciting career. A nice article written by Unzicker near the end showed how fairly Fischer treated chess-fellows. This book could a short historical document illustrating the rise and fall of a chess titan.

Book Description
Told for the first time by the only reporter present, this is the true story of the legendary Paris Tasting of 1976 -- a blind tasting where French judges shocked the industry by choosing unknown California wines over France's best -- and its revolutionary impact on the world of wine.
The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History houses, amid its illustrious artifacts, two bottles of wine: a 1973 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon and a 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay. These are the wines that won at the now-famous Paris Tasting in 1976, where a panel of top French wine experts compared some of France's most famous wines with a new generation of California wines. Little did they know the wine industry would be completely transformed as a result, sparking a golden age for viticulture that extends beyond France's hallowed borders -- to Australia, Chile, South Africa, New Zealand, and across the globe.
Then Paris correspondent for Time magazine, George M. Taber recounts this seminal contest and its far-reaching effects, focusing on the three gifted unknowns behind the winning wines: a college lecturer, a real estate lawyer, and a Yugoslavian immigrant. At a time when California was best known for cheap jug wine, these pioneers used radical new techniques alongside time-honored winemaking traditions to craft premium American wines that could stand up to France's finest.
With unique access to the main players and a contagious passion for his subject, Taber renders this historic event and its tremendous aftershocks in captivating prose, bringing to life an eclectic cast and magnificent settings. For lovers of wine and anyone who enjoys a story of the entrepreneurial spirit of the new world conquering the old, this is an illuminating and deeply satisfying tale.
Customer Reviews:
Not a book about the wine, but a book about the passion for making, tasting, and drinking wine.......2007-09-26
Author George Taber is not a wine grower, producer, bottler, seller, or apologist. His connection to the main story in this book, the build up to a classic tasting competition in France of California wines against French wines, was that he was the only journalist to show up for the wine tasting. He wrote for Time Magazine, and Taber said he'd "...try to get there, without promising anything" (p. 163).
Ah, Malcolm Gladwell's tipping point was about to occur.
As it turned out, the California wines, both Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, came in first in blind tasting with some very well known French wine judges. It was shocking.... to the judges, the French government, and to the California wineries. They were THAT good?
This is the story of that tasting competition, the wineries involved, the wine makers, and the grape growers. Taber discusses the history of these wines, the history of wine growing regions, and the future of wines. Great wines can be grown outside of France? The cat was out of the bag. New Zealand, Chile, Australia... no longer does France spring to the tip of the tongue when discussing the very best wines.
In The Judgment of Paris, Taber stretches the narrative, so it needed to be more than entertaining... it needed to be educational. Luckily, this book was both.
I recommend it to the budding wine connoisseur! Read this book before visiting either Napa-Sonoma Counties, or France. Better yet, read it before your next visit to your local wine shop.
Fun Book.......2007-07-07
After 30 years of tasting wines in the Napa Valley, I finally found a book that puts all the pieces together. George M. Taber recounts the famous 1976 Paris Tasting in intricate detail...and that may be the smaller story here. In a larger sense, Taber "connects the dots" that are the owners, vineyard farmers, and wine makers who crafted the wine history of this beautiful valley. Sit back with a glass of your favorite wine and savor the passion and persistence that revolutionized the wine industry of California and the world. Cheers!
The real magic in wine making:.......2007-02-06
Mr. Tauber not only demystifies the world of wine to someone who knows little about it, but relates the wonderful story of devotion and hard work that goes into producing a top wine. I do believe that wine tastes better since reading this book.
A Delicious Read!.......2007-02-03
I love California wines. As a Californian I am very proud of my home states history and heritage as the world's premier producer of fine wines. However, it has not always been so. Until quite recently, California wines were not reveared in such an august way. What happened? How did this change in world opinion occur? I have been curious about this mysterious evolution in Californaia wines for quite some time and after a friend suggested Judgment of Paris to me I began to hope that it would be all I had wished for. I was not disappointed. Obviously, I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history and loves premium wine, especially wines produced in California.
The Judgment of Paris is such a tremendous book on many levels. It is full of tender and engaging stories about real people who, against all odds, helped establish California wines amongst the best in the world, culminating with their personal involvement in the now famous 1976 Paris wine tasting competition: The seminal event that turned the world of wine on it's collective head.
This book is also a fabulous review of premier wine making history, not only in California, but worldwide. If your knowledge of wines and wine making is limited or non-existent, you will feel like quite the connoisseur by the time you are finished reading. This is a really fun and informative book. Very well researched and extremely well written.
Cheers! to George Tabor for crafting such a wonderful `book-quet'. ;-)
A very good book...........2006-11-03
This was a very good book. It filled in many of the blanks. However, Taber's proofreader should have been more careful... he/she would have caught Taber's mistake in referring to Jancis Robinson as a he instead of a she. It just goes to show that a non-wine person wrote (and proofed) the book!
