Book Description
A fascinating look into the life of one of Hollywood's hottest film stars.
For twenty years Gabriel Byrne has been to the forefront of Irish actors and producers internationally. From his appearance in John Boorman's Excalibur in 1981 via Miller's Crossing in 1990 through to Stigmata and End of Days in 1999 and 2000 he has turned his diverse skills and brooding good looks to many different roles.
With Stigmata and End of Days, his appearance on Broadway and the new NBC sitcom, Madigan's Men, which he produced and in which he stars he has hit a new high point in his career.
In vivid cinematic sketches this absorbing memoir presents a series of fascinating glimpses into his public and private life. He leads the reader through his career on stage and screen as both producer and actor. Along the way he shares his impressions of Hollywood, New York and his native Ireland and takes us behind the scenes of his many films.
He has worked with many of the cutting edge directors of international cinema including Jim Jarmusch, Wim Wenders and the Coen bothers and with many of the finest actors of the late twentieth century-Liam Neeson, Kevin Spacey, Gerard Depardieu, John Turturro, Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon and Christina Ricci to name a few.
Gabriel Byrne's unique narrative style colors every page, mixing colloquial dialogue with evocative descriptions. The result is a frank, intimate account that reveals the man-and the writer-behind the actor's many faces.
Customer Reviews:
A compelling triump.......2007-07-04
"Pictures in My Head" demonstrates Gabriel Byrne's uncanny ability to convey the essence of time and place with an economy of words. This slim volume of vignettes from Mr. Byrne's life transports the reader from his early childhood through his success in Hollywood as an adult until 1995.
Mr. Byrne's writing is unique and lyrical. His style of writing mimics the disjointed, natural flow of internal thinking, jumping from one fragment of an idea to another. For that reason, in addition to vocabulary and cultural references unfamiliar to the American reader, the text is sometimes difficult to digest upon first reading. Many passages require a second pass, but upon re-reading I found myself effectively transported into Mr. Byrne's world. The title of the book "Pictures in My Head" perfectly embodies the essence of what this book is about.
The stories from the early part of Mr. Byrne's life are particularly enthralling. The retelling of events of his early childhood in Ireland include incredible detail. Mr. Byrne has the rare talent of recalling small details that most people wouldn't notice, much less recall. Rarer still is his ability to then take those small details, recount them and essentially capture a moment with words. However, I agree with another reviewer who found the second half of the book less satisfying. In addition to seeming a bit more rushed, Mr. Byrne's desire to protect the privacy of his friends, family and himself in the second half of the book unfortunately hinders his ability to write with the same freedom and compelling detail that made the first half of the book so captivating.
Despite this criticism, the same honesty, intelligence and sensitivity that contribute to Mr. Byrne's success as an actor translates well into his foray as an author. "Pictures in My Head" is a compelling triumph. Gabriel Byrne's capacity for conveying the beauty and poignancy of life as a human being is remarkably gripping. I sincerely hope Mr. Byrne will continue to write.
Nice, But Lacking.......2002-09-24
This is a very sweet book, written by a wonderful actor. Sadly, it lacks a few things. Details, for one. It's very good in some places, and then it seems to rush on when you want to know more. And it jumps around like "Pride and Prejudice"...I had a hard time keeping track of where he was in his life.
All in all, it's a nice story. However, if you read this and "Angela's Ashes" right tight together, you realize something. You realize that even though you thought at first that Gabriel had it kind of bad growing up, he is almost a spoiled little rich kid, compared to Frank McCourt. Let's see some real life, here!
Vivid.......2001-04-04
I get the impression that Mr. Byrne is superbly sensitive to his surroundings and absorbs everything. I envy his photographic memory and ability to live completely in the moment. :o) This is the perfect book to curl up with under your favorite green soft blanket.
I REALLY LOVE THIS BOOK.......2000-11-24
I must say this book really surprised me! I got it as a Christmas present last year, and I never expected it, because I had only been a Gabriel Byrne friend for about three months or so, but after I had read it, I felt I knew Gabriel personally. I have never met him, but I am longing to see him. The book is very well written, so I wonder why he doesn't write more. Probably because he doesn't have time... I'm awaiting his new film or book. Whatever it is, I'll buy it. Buy this book, you won't be disappointed. If you're a Byrne fan, it's a must! If you're not, after reading the book, you will be!
An Intimate View.......2000-08-10
This was a wonderful book, beautifully written by a magnificent actor. The stories and the memories were so real, and honest. I could only have hoped that the book was longer and that Gabriel would have shared more with all of us. Then again, everyone needs to keep some memories their own. Thanks for sharing your touching and humorous look at life.

Diggy Dan: A Room-Cleaning Adventure
ASIN: 0679890394
Release Date: 1998-07-13 |
Book Description
A picture book written and illustrated by a kid?! Yes! (Along with his dad.) Dan has dreamed up a nightmare that takes on a life of its own, leaping right off his sketch pad and into his room. Thus begins a fantastic Technicolor/tm/ escapade where Dan must use his wits (and his Magic Pencil) to make his nightmares disappear. Straight from the minds of Daniel (7 years old) and David (36 years old) Kamish comes a wild visual journey that kids will never get tired of reading.
All 40 pages of line art were drawn by Dan, and then David added color, tone, and texture to the collaged spreads. The far-out art will no doubt appeal to kids and adults alike.
Customer Reviews:
The Night the Scary Beasties Popped Out of my Head.......2004-11-18
One night Dan hears a rumbling in his head. The rumbling grows to a deep growl and Dan bolts awake, drawing the beastie from his nightmare so he can erase it and make it go away forever! But before he can, the Beastie gets off the paper and runs away! This is the exceptionally well-written lead from the book, "The Night the Scary Beasties Popped out of my Head." The book uses sloppy, but pleasing-to-the-eye pictures drawn by seven-year-old Dan Kamish. Dan's father, Dave Kamish, textures and colors his sons illustrations. While there isn't really a very sophisticated plot, the pictures and funny vocabulary that the Kamish family uses makes you want to keep reading. This book definitely deserves a 5 out of 5 stars rating and I believe that it is the most hilarious children's book I have ever read!

My 5-year-old DEMANDED we own this book...........1999-08-12
My son came home from pre-school reciting bits of the book after just one reading and begging to order it for home. The illustrations are wonderful and the language is clever and fun. Now my son wants to write books of his own!
As a parent, I would add that if your child has concerns about nightmares, this book is a practical-but-fun story about how kids can control them.
A must for children from age 4 to 94!.......1999-04-30
Daniel & David Kamish have done it! My 6 year old and ten of his friends (holiday gift giving) own and love this book. The illustrations put a funny spin to awful kid nightmares, and who wouldn't give their right arm for a "magic pencil". We can't wait for these two to collaborate on another book!
Outstanding, fun for the family.......1998-12-09
Shows great imagination. Stimulating, great for kids of all ages
Beasties is the best!.......1998-10-11
I saw this book go from a thought to the stores and it's one of the most unique children's books ever! Daniel's illustrations are awsome and Dave's writing is brilliant! Way to go, guys. Good photos of the authors, too.

A great book about accepting yourself.......2000-04-05
This is one of my favorite's children's books. The artwork is great but the message is better. Maria wakes up one morning and finds that her hair is full of colors. Each day after that her hair is different, full of animals, books and even all kinds of people. She learns that she is all the things in her hair, not just a little girl, but a little girl that is multi-faceted and talented. I love it!

This book has unlocked the door to the heart of Gabriel Byrne. He tells all in this book of his childhood as he becomes an adult. He shows his quiet and serious side as well as his wild child-like side.

Not enough history here, but plenty of new stuff.......2001-08-10
This includes a disproportionately hefty dose of hip-hop and rap albums, which makes sense, considering the intense recent cross-pollination of hip hop with cheesy quiet storm "soul" (which is also heavily emphasized in this volume). However, the emphasis is clearly more contemporary than historical -- for example, the reference sidebars are entitled "Word Up!", which seems tacky as well as rather dated. Modern artists such as Bobby Brown, Sheena Easton, and Toni Braxton get equal -- if not superior -- billing with soul music touchstones such as Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, and the Stax/Volt and Motown crowds. Very few pre-rock artists are included -- Cab Calloway and Big Joe Turner make it in, for example, but not Buddy Johnson or Floyd Dixon, and several classic 60s soul stars such as Garnett Mimms are also omitted. Finally, while most of the big-name blues shouters such as Wynonie Harris, Amos Milburn and Louis Jordan have entries, practically none of their great gospel counterparts are included. This really is a disgrace, as well as a short-sighted, culturally revisionist nod to contemporary tastes (which do not embrace the preachin' and shoutin' religious side of African-American music). Rest assured that without Bessie Griffin, Clara Ward, the Soul Stirrers, or Rev. James Cleveland, there would never have been a BeBe Winans, Mariah Carey or Aretha Franklin -- much less a Parliament, Lauryn Hill or KRS-1. As with other MusicHound books, this also provides useful appendices, including fan sites, etc., and the companion CD is a nice (if stingy) sampler of some of gems from the Mercury Records catalog. But if Wu Tang or Billy Oceans are not your "R&B" thing, you may wish to be wary of this tome.
Error Filled Encyclopedia.......1999-12-28
Why don't these books shell out a few books and have them fact checked by experts like me? Or get better writers because the people who put these books together don't seem to know the correct facts (they obviously cribbed them from other incorrect books).
Too many incorrect statements and too much overplay.......1999-08-06
As the information can be helpful or insightful to one, it is also a discredit to the artist. Far too much of this information is inaccurate. While there may be some truth to one statement, the next line may be totally off base. Hopefully many of these blunders will be corrected in the next edition.
Get the Facts Straight!.......1999-01-20
Johnny Mathis wasn't born in San Francisco..he was born in Gilmer, Texas. He was introduced to George Avakian at Ann's nightclub in San Francisco by his manager Helen Noga, not singing the National Anthem at a track meet! And as far as millionaire status...try his predecessor, Nat King Cole! How about employing some fact checking before publication! There are more RELIABLE sources than this for biographical material concerning Mathis. If the authors screwed up this badly for Johnny Mathis, who knows how accurate their entries are for the rest of the artists!
Five bones for the concept, 3 bones for the content!.......1998-08-31
I liken this book to a Chinese meal - as much as you enjoy it and feel you're full, you always feel empty soon after. While I appreciate the enormity of this project and how subjective the meaning of R&B is, I find many glaring omissions and some very strange inclusions. e.g. No mention of the Soul Children, Jerry Williams Jr. (aka Swamp Dogg), Paul Kelly, Sam Dees, Bunny Sigler, Leon Ware and Phil Perry (to name but a few). I fail to see how David Bowie can be classfied as an R&B artist, or the Spice Girls (even though I'm a Brit!). I would like to see more specialist soul artists included and the book streamlined to be more R&B and a lot less pop. However, I still find it hard to put down!

Customer Reviews:
Foward and backwards links are great.......2002-03-09
Each artist has a list of their major influences and who they influenced. I used this to quickly skim through and spot who I might be interested in. I was able to find hundreds of bands that I did not know but were pretty good. I usually did enjoy the stuff I thought I would from reading the book. This book led me to what I wanted.
Invaluable reference for uncovering gems.......2000-07-06
This book has reinvigorated my interest in music. I don't listen to the radio much (when you have >600 CDs, why bother to subject one's self to DJ blather and commercials?), so there have been many artists who I haven't been exposed to. By reading through this book, I've come across several artists, who, based on the reviews, would seem to fit my taste. I've purchased several CDs based on these reviews, and while some have not panned out (The Bats, The Remains), some have been great finds (Crowded House, Cotton Mather, Hoodoo Gurus). The hit or miss effect is probably mostly due to the great variety of reviewers used. I wish the reviewers were indexed. One could look at which reviews agree closely with your own opinions, and then look at what other bands that reviewer has evaluated, and those rated highly might be a good fit for your taste. That minor deficiency is more than offset by the great breadth of artists covered. Discovering Crowded House was worth the price of the book.
poorly edited..........2000-06-23
Doesn't hold up to the first edition.
I know there is a fine line between pop and rock, but Mariah Carrie,Hanson and Backstreet Boys in same book with Black Flag,Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan.?And the photos...I could live without a full page pictures of Paul Rodgers,Zac Hanson,Noel Gallagher and so on.It seems you need to sift through many unwanted pages for the good parts.
This is a complete guide on music and the information is close to certain, yet is it really neccessary to call this a rock guide or the "poprock" guide.
Well worth the price.......2000-05-17
In the introduction to this book, it says that if it gets you to NOT buy a couple of bad records, the book has paid itself. I definately agree and have confirmed this with some of the albums I wish I had never bought. There is definatly some omissions but these are understandable when you consider all the records that are out there. But the best thing about this book is that it is up to date. The Rolling Stone guide stops in the early 80s and the Rough Guide only covers to the early 90s. I have not yet been disapointed with the results of my purchases for which i've consider Musichounds advice. I will probably buy the Musichound World book so that I can start with this kind of music. If you are a serious rock music collector, you should get this book.
deeply flawed.......2000-05-02
not the rock guide i would recomend first, if at all. the few times i have needed information on a band [last go round : the godz on esp] there was no listing..... the biggest flaw , for me, was no listing for the german band 'can,' arguably in the top five of all time most influential alternative bands...
and the way they will combine artists under one listing makes you wonder what the editors were doing..
for example, the faces/small faces listing has zero info on the small faces, ironic in the light of their recent 'rediscovery'
ditto for the sugarcubes/bjork listing. none of the bjork albums even get reviewed...
the rough guide or the all music guide is the way to go for me
Customer Reviews:
excellent poker night games.......2005-10-17
I liked the games in this book a lot! This is the book for those evenings when you're playing with your friends for quarters, and everyone calls a crazy game. Some are old favorites that everyone's heard of, and some I have never seen before in my life. The illustrations are funny! Many, many poker nights' worth of fun.
Great basics (plus 200+ Variants).......2005-08-04
I was looking for something that would give me some solid basics (House Rules Examples, Low Hand, basic variants) and a "How To". That part of book is solid and useful. Oh yeah, there are are also a boat load of variants that I have only even begun to take in. I will be breaking those out next poker night (about once a month).
If your looking for strategy, this isn't really for you, but if you want a book that will make you feel comfortable with basic poker and give you plenty of games to dabble at It's a good purchase.
Clever and Fun Poker Variants! .......2005-06-21
I have read and used this book at poker parties, and I love it. If you play poker with your friends, you really ought to have it at the table. It is an excellent source of unique poker variants that are both fun and well designed.
Funny, and a whole lot of fun........2005-05-13
If you want to get together with friends for a good relaxing game of poker, you must have this book at the table. It's not for serious hardcore people but for regular humans, who want to unwind with a fun game.
The best feature of the book is the list of hundreds and hundreds of different poker games, ranging from the old stand-bys everyone knows (like Baseball), to some truly crazy and entertaining games. My regular table can't survive a night without a few games of Diablo, Frankenstein, and Jane Austen.
And it's a hilarious book. Even if you don't play many of the games in it, it's simply a good read.

Exactly what you should get in a beginner's Forex book.......2007-07-12
This book is exactly what a beginner's Forex book should be. It gives you a very brief history, terms used in Forex, the mechanics of Forex, how to open an account with a broker or online, the calculations, some money management techniques and a chapter on fundamental and technical analysis and resources. It contains just enough information for a beginner to get started without overwhelming her / him.
broad over view.......2007-05-19
but abit lacking on knowledge.not enough indepth knowledge and wisdom for me. but none the less useful. more of a quick reference i think.a book more if want a sneek peak at the forex market. easy to read and understand.
USELESS.......2007-04-25
The authors brief treatment of what are very complex topics will lead readers to falsely believe that they can trade these markets with little training. It appears that the authors basically cut and pasted brief paragraphs about a variet of topics and called it a book. Other reviewers have called it a 'big picture' book, the truth is it is a complete waste of time and money.
Boring and Just a Bunch of Information stuffed in There.......2007-04-12
I found this very hard to follow and it seemed like a lot of of info was just copy and pasted into the book. Who knows. That's just my humble opionion.
Wonderful primer for forex trading!!!.......2007-03-18
Before someone can write poetry he must learn the alphabet and some grammar rules. Before you trade forex you should read this book to make forex "poetry" by trading well. This book is a concise and clear presentation of all of the basic ideas needed to trade forex.
It seems to me that there are two kinds of people who will not enjoy this book. The first kind of person will never understand the difference between a "pip" being a trading unit of currency and the funny thing on the end of an orange! Beware of this kind of person. They should spend more time watching the food channel to pick up on new cooking techniques. The second type of person is looking for trading techniques and would do well to read the author's excellent work on charting techniques for forex trading.
Take note, these men are SERIOUS traders and have the rare talent to bring complicated ideas to different levels of readers. This is a primer, nothing else. If you read this book and do not "get anything" from this then you should not be in the forex trading game. You will have learned a very inexpensive lesson. If this book makes no sense to you consider going to cooking school.
However, there are thousands of newbie traders that should own and use this book. Between page 1 and page 182 is a collection of all of the basic ideas that you will need to play this amazing game of forex trading. Good trading to all.
