From Pietro Aaron to Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Don Randel compiles 1,013 pages of thumbnail sketches describing the life and music of 5,500 individuals who figure significantly in the world of music. Intended for "the musically inclined, the curious, the informed, and the expert," this is a beautiful, intelligent, and comprehensive volume that wants only its companion, The New Harvard Dictionary of Music, to feel complete.

Book Description

An incomparable guide to the thousands of characters, from humble artisan to lofty genius, who people the unfolding history of music, this volume brings together all the pertinent biographical information about composers, performers, music theorists, and instrument makers from the days of praise chants to the bop and pop of today. A long-awaited companion to The New Harvard Dictionary of Music, and compiled with the same meticulous scholarship and delight in detail, this biographical dictionary emphasizes classical and art music, but also gives ample attention to jazz and blues, rock and pop, and hymns and showtunes across the ages--with unusual care devoted to coverage of the twentieth century.

That the Belgian composer Jean Absil was professor of fugue at the Brussels Conservatory is a little-known fact. And few are aware that Roy Acuff began his country-and-western career in medicine shows. The writings of the seventeenth-century organist Jakob Adlung may be obscure, while Theodor Adorno's are widely read and studied. But they can all be found in the A's, along with 218 more entries, from Herb Alpert and the Andrews Sisters to Carl Friedrich Abel and Emanuel Ax. And this is only the beginning.

Here then is the information you need about 5500 figures in the world of music--the major, the minor, the famous, the nearly forgotten, from Bach and Beethoven to Irving Berlin, Benny Goodman, and Bruce Springsteen--capsule summaries of the lives and careers behind the music enjoyed in every era. The volume is enlivened with illustrations, some revelations in themselves.

A compendium that no music lover should be without, this rich volume, along with The New Harvard Dictionary of Music, constitutes the standard reference work for the musically inclined, the curious, the informed, and the expert.

5 out of 5 stars Harvard Biographical Dictionary.......2007-01-19

If you want to know what a composer or proformer means to music, or the contributions they made, this is the book to get. It's the only one you need!

5 out of 5 stars The Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music (Harvard University Press Reference Library).......2005-09-21

A great companion to the Harvard Dictionary of Music. Well written, comprehensive, and surprisingly complete for a sigle volume dictionary. Highly recommended for any serious musician or teacher.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Inexpensive.......1999-09-09

One word. Wow! This book, combined with The New Harvard Dictionary of Music, makes a great resource for serious musicians, amateurs, and students alike. The near 6000 entries make this reference the best for its price. I've used the Baker on several occasions. While the Baker is certainly more comprehensive, a glance at its price (~$90) is enough to make one think twice. The Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music, with its bargain price, is a must buy. Couple it with The New Harvard Dictionary of Music (which is the same price as the Biographical Dictionary), and you will have an unbeatable musical resource at your disposal. If you are REALLY tight on budget, then perhaps you may want to check out the Oxford Dictionary of Music. It accomplishes in 1 volume (and ~$34 compared to the Harvards' $54 combined) what the Harvard Dictionaries do in 2, though (understandably) to a much lesser extent. Nevertheless, the Harvard music references are still great buys, especially if you have a little extra cash to expend.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent refereence........1998-02-01

Written by over 70 top musicologists, this splendid reference focuses on composers but also includes a generous selection of performers, theorists, and instrument makers, of all eras and genres, in nearly 6,000 entries.
Biographical details are of course provided, with a brief professional resume, (with longer entries for composers of greater significance), an accounting of major works, and a discerning bibliography where appropriate. The authors mention lifestyle issues when they bear heavily on the career of the subject (e.g., Chet Baker's heroin addiction), but the emphasis is on music, as it should be.
Coverage runs from Edouard Lalo to Little Richard, Johann Friedrich Fasch to Johnny Rotten, so whatever the musical taste, this dictionary will be useful. Highly recommended for music lovers of all persuasions.

        Book Description

P'ansori, the traditional oral narrative of Korea, is sung by a highly trained soloist to the accompaniment of complex drumming. The singer both narrates the story and dramatizes all the characters, male and female. Performances require as long as six hours and make extraordinary vocal demands. In the first book-length treatment in English of this remarkable art form, Pihl traces the history of p'ansori from its roots in shamanism and folktales through its nineteenth-century heyday under highly acclaimed masters and discusses its evolution in the twentieth century. After examining the place of p'ansori in popular entertainment and its textual tradition, he analyzes the nature of texts in the repertoire and explains the vocal and rhythmic techniques required to perform them.

Pihl's superb translation of the alternately touching and comic "Song of Shim Ch'ong"--the first annotated English translation of a full p'ansori performance text--illustrates the emotional range, narrative variety, and technical complexity of p'ansori literature. The Korean Singer of Tales will interest not only Korean specialists, but also students of comparative literature, folklore, anthropology, and music.

              Book Description

Schoenberg's quartets and trio, composed over a nearly forty-year period, occupy a central position among twentieth-century chamber music. This volume, based on papers presented at a conference in honor of David Lewin, collects a wide range of approaches to Schoenberg's pieces. The first part of the book provides a historical context to these works, examining Viennese quartet culture and traditions, Webern's reception of Schoenberg's Second Quartet, Schoenberg's view of the Beethoven quartets, and the early reception of Schoenberg's First Quartet. The second part examines musical issues of motive, text setting, meter, imitative counterpoint, and closure within Schoenberg's quartets and trio.

              Book Description

Enka, a sentimental ballad genre, epitomizes for many the nihonjin no kokoro (heart/soul of Japanese). To older members of the Japanese public, who constitute enka's primary audience, this music--of parted lovers, long unseen rural hometowns, and self-sacrificing mothers--evokes a direct connection to the traditional roots of "Japaneseness." Overlooked in this emotional invocation of the past, however, are the powerful commercial forces that, since the 1970s, have shaped the consumption of enka and its version of national identity. Informed by theories of nostalgia, collective memory, cultural nationalism, and gender, this book draws on the author's extensive fieldwork in probing the practice of identity-making and the processes at work when Japan becomes "Japan."

5 out of 5 stars Tears of Longing: Nostalgia and the Nation in Japanese Popular Song.......2007-06-27

This book contained everything that I needed to do my research for the genre of Japanese enka. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to get to the whys and how the genre is different for others. It is a very detailed book.

              5 out of 5 stars ENKA!.......2007-02-04

This may be the only English-language book on the Enka genre, about which it is difficult to find any guides or other information unless you are fluent in the Japanese language. Dr. Yano's approach to this (sadly underappreciated) genre is more from a scholarly approach than as a "fan" of the music, by her own admission, but this book provides a wealth of information about the history, lyrics and visual style of Enka music and its performers. Personally I would have liked to have learned about the "stars" of this genre, particular Hibari Misora, undoubtedly its most famous performer. Also, Enka does exist in the US, though through mostly Japanese-American fans and performers, but this may be another subject of study. Enka may be a declining musical art form, but there are some notable younger performers, like Kitayama Takeshi and Komura Miki. I'm very grateful to Dr. Yano for the information provided by her book!

                      Book Description

An investment alternative that gives fixed returns of 10 to 25 percent.

Profit by Investing in Real Estate Tax Liens introduces an investment alternative that is safe, secured by real estate, administered by the government, involves no brokers, is enforced by state law, and gives fixed returns.

Selling tax liens or tax deeds (depending on the state) are the two ways that counties across the country bring delinquent property taxes up-to-date. This investment is one of the least publicized and safest ways of investing in real estate, designed to give the investor either a fixed return, as in the case of investing in tax liens, or a property for 10 to 50 cents on the dollar, as in the case of a tax deed sale. In most situations, the property is ultimately transferred free of any liens, such as mortgages.

Profit by Investing in Real Estate Tax Liens also debunks the common myth that tax delinquent properties are run-down and shows that liens exist on every type of property. Author Larry Loftis, an attorney and active investor, has purchased liens on properties owned by Julius ""Dr. J"" Erving, Hector ""Macho"" Camacho (world champion boxer), Chase Manhattan Bank, LaSalle National Bank, and even a building whose major tenant was the local sheriff's department!

In this authoritative guide, Loftis helps investors avoid the pitfalls while answering all the key questions they need to consider:

                      * What's the difference between investing in tax liens and tax deeds?

                      * How does an investor go about bidding at tax sales? And what is the process?

                      * What are the different requirements in each state?

                      * Where are the greatest risks in this kind of real estate investing?

For investors eager to get started, Loftis's action plan provides details on the next steps to take, while real-life examples in every chapter bring the concepts down to earth.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to understand.......2007-07-12

It is so easy to understand and mostly what I liked in this book is I dont want to miss a page and I just read the book on and on..

                      5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-05-13

I started investing in tax auctions a couple of years ago and I bought this book as my first guide and it was certainly a good one. There are weaknesses on this book in terms of online tax lien sales though, seeing as a lot of counties are moving towards that way (Loftis prefers classic auctions versus online auctions). But I find them a lot easier, I don't have to be there in a hot room filled with 30 other people. And I can be 300 miles away doing it, not having to pay a plane ticket or gas.

Overall, it has the information you need to win in tax liens sales and also a bit of information on tax deeds. I also bought a more updated book below that has information on online auctions:

Complete Guide to Real Estate Tax Liens and Foreclosure Deeds: Learn in 7 Days-Investing Without Losing Series by Don Sausa

Oh and I forgot to mention, Loftis and Sausa are real tax lien investors. There are some books out there that I had to put down because they weren't even written by an investor!

4 out of 5 stars Real Estate Tax Liens.......2007-05-09

I thoroughly enjoyed this interesting book on tax liens. I learned a lot on the subject from the book and attended a tax lien sale shortly after reading the book. The book was well organized and easy to understand the process of buying tax liens. I have just bought another book on tax liens in order to compare the advice given by Loftis in this book to the advice given in the newly acquired book.

4 out of 5 stars READ BEFORE BUYING -- Excellent info.......2006-11-13

This has excellent info on tax liens. I bought this book and Complete Guide to Real Estate Tax Liens and Foreclosure Deeds: Learn in 7 Days, both combined the perfect tax auction reference.

4 out of 5 stars WHY I gave it 4 STARS instead of 5 stars.......2006-11-07

I bought 3 tax lien books at a real estate bookshop/workshop and I would rate this tax lien book as #2 out of the three (see my other reviews on what else I bought). I think this book was a good introduction to tax liens but there's a few things that were in it that I didn't give it 5 full stars.

                      Good -
** The back reference materials is probably the most helpful out of this book, specifically the directory of states and their laws.

                      Bad -
** I don't really like the tell-all stories of the author's auction escapades...I want to read a how-to book, I really don't want to know the person you corrected because what he said was wrong when you overheard him. I don't really want to see pictures of you and your friends at the auction.

                      Conclusion
** Overall a 4 out of 5 stars, but please remove some of the autobiography stuff next time.
